- It's time to take care of that leak! I wanted to do this before the Moab trip, and I'm running out of time. So, today was the day! In this video, I change out my thermostat and housing assembly. I didn't drain the radiator for this, and then I show how I bled the air out of the cooling system with help of a spillproof funnel.

Here's what MY manual says about the coolant I need:
MS-12106 OAT (MS-90032)
The engine cooling system must be protected
with a high-quality antifreeze coolant to provide
proper corrosion protection and to protect
against engine overheating. A solution of 50%
OAT (Organic Additive Technology) coolant that
meets the requirements of Chrysler Material
Standard MS-12106 and 50% water is recommended.
Refer to “Maintenance Procedures” in
“Maintaining Your Vehicle” for proper coolant
selection.
MAKE SURE YOU KNOW WHICH COOLANT YOUR SPECIFIC YEAR NEEDS. It's confusing I know. Check your owners manual! - Авто/Мото
Saying you’re the best would be an understatement ! Helped me out so much !! I speak for all attending this sermon when I say THANK YOU !!!
I just had to replace the thermostat, radiator hoses, and flush the coolant in my daughter's Jeep. After watching your video I ran out and bought one of those no spill funnels before I started the job! What a terrific invention!! It made bleeding the air from the system so much easier. Thanks for the video.
Did this today. Worked great. One improvement. After you reconnect the hose to the thermostat housing. Remove the other end off the radiator. Refill the hose from there and bleed the last bit of air from the housing. Reconnect. Less air to burp.
Exactly what i do all the time in my jeep and m3
Dude! I followed your steps and successfully replaced my thermostat tonight! Thank you so much!
Just below 70k on my 2014 JEEP JK. Live in south east michigan, saw steam coming from the hood. Radiator cap was cold. Few friends suggested air in the line from a faulty radiator cap. Been running my jeep without a radiator cap for about 30 minutes,no funnel, and keeping an eye on temp and bubbles. Great video, thank you.
Wow, great thank you. Best part was the Spill-Proof funnel for purging air from system. Keep em coming!
I used this funnel system on my JK & it worked awesome!!! Had a lot of air bubbles in my system & was funny to see it work itself out. Great product brah 🤙🏽🤙🏽🤙🏽🤙🏽🤙🏽
Everyone told me I had a cracked radiator, but I didnt see any stains. I ran into this vid right before running a pressure test. Bingo! Thank you!
I watched several thermostat videos and this was by far the best and most informative. Great job of showing all the steps clearly.
OMG! The flip flop comment wat priceless. I hope you win a RUclips award for that
Have had cooling issues in my wrangler since 2016. Tried everything, even had Faricy Boys look at it. My normal operating temps ranged from 220 to 245 daily to and from work at Garden of the Gods to Stetson Hills Monday through Friday. Ran across your vid and wouldn’t you know it. No more issues after following your vid step by step. Now temps are 206 to 220. Appreciate it
I'm having that same issues with my jeep. Had faricy boys do a thermostat and coolant flush. And it helped alot. But still regularly see it go up to 228-230 and just randomly it'll go up to 235 or more then right back down. It's gotta be air bubbles in there.
Great step by step video. I watched several. Some bled at bleeder but didn't "burp". Others just "burped". You did both and that's what I plan to do. Of note when rinsing with water I usually cover the alternator. Sure, rain/street water can get up there (usually not as much flow) but I've replaced alternators on other vehicles as a result of alternator corrosion from hosing down engine bay without covering alternator. Thank you!
Great video really showed step by step. I have the same problem with my Jeep and now I feel confident that I can complete the job myself. I will post the results later. Thanks
Thank you for creating a well-oriented video. I have the exact same leak on my 2013 JKUR. Thanks to you, I know exactly what I need to do and buy. You have a new subscriber. Bravo Zulu!
I’m so glad my thermostat is on top of the motor and not under all the stuff
Thank you for the detailed and informative instruction on this project, just enough info for me to do it myself.
Thank you for this tutorial. I’m a new Jeep owner and I don’t have much mechanical experience and I want to learn how to work on my own vehicle. This was a huge help. Thank you!!
Absolutely fantastic video! Very informative and to the point, with no typical RUclips video bravado. Thanks!
I got a lot of respect for this guy. He straight up walked away from this jeep. Thats hard
Thank you for putting this video together. You did an amazingly good job at videoing everything....very good illustrations ! I have been dealing with my wife's 2014 Jeep Wrangler Sport with 3.6L engine. The heater hasn't been up to par these past few months, and she took it to a repair shop and they 1st flushed the heater core and topped off the fluid. It acted up again and didn't provide heat like it has in the past, so she took it back in to the same shop and they flushed the entire radiator, block ect......I think we have determined that the cooling system is clean and has new OAT type coolant in it. You are correct about NOT mixing HOAT with OAT type coolants, and to be clear the 2014 Jeep Wranger also uses OAT Type coolant. If mixing occurs it will cause a gelling effect on the coolant----very bad ! I called the repair person and he and I spoke about the attempts to repair and he said it may very well be the heater core. I've used my Fluke laser heat detecting gun and the heater hoses are getting hot all the way to the firewall---on both inlet and outlet sides of the heater core. I would suppose you changed the thermostat housing mainly due to the housing leaking, and didn't change it due to an "engine code" ? I noticed that you didn't use a sealant in addition the the rubber "O-ring" gasket for the thermostat housing. Did you find the hairline crack in the housing by chance ? By the way I love the American Flag in your yard !
Perfect instructions! Just finished. Got the funnel and everything. Only thing...when I took the funnel off with coolant still in it...at the bottom of funnel, coolant came out big time. I guess from the radiator. It was a blur and coolant got all over my arms. Yes, I am not a motor head so don't make fun of me. :)
Just did thermostat and coolant change, as I have 150,000. Excellent video, by far the best help for me. Thank you!
Did you have any issues that made you replace your thermostat and do a flush?
Just ran into this problem but I found out my radiator was cracked at 1am driving home from work. I had thought it was the thermostat had ordered one and my wife then told me just get it and change it out and then put the new radiator on so that's what I'll be doing this weekend yay lol great video
Your video was GREAT!!!! I had trouble with this til I saw your video. Thanks.
I have the spill proof funnel and have used it. It works great.
A quarter, (instead of a screw driver), works well for the plastic bleed screw.
With your video I was able to make this job quick work. Thank you for Awesome instructions.
Great idea to use the tub. Definitely using that one in the future!
I don't blame you for not draining the radiator. I flushed my system before my Utah trip and the petcock is a major pain to access.
Thanks bud. The most detailed I’ve seen so far.
Appreciate the video, plan to change out my anti-freeze when I install my supercharger coming up. Appreciate the link for the funnel, looks very handy for the bleed procedure.
Thanks for sharing! This what I’m looking for.Best DIY video tutorial so far ✌️✌️✌️
Great video. I'm doing my wife's 2013 today. Thx for sharing.
thanks a ton for the video dude! 2012 jeep wrangler sport, just took about 10-15 minutes to get apart, replace, and put back together.! (bleeding took a bit more). Good reminder on the anti-freeze animal connection, it's an agonizing terrible death for a beast that meeses with that toxic shit. blind, crazy, in agony then dead. save fluffy!
Wow 622000 miles. Killer video. Very informative
Pressing down the gas pedal while the rad cap is off will definitely make the coolant overflow from the funnel or anything else. Just let it idle nice and steady on its own that way you won't have a mess with coolant.
Thank you for showing how to do this without flushing your whole system.
Great video, I like the funnel, thanks for the help.
I have the same year and have had the infamous coolant smell since new as do many others I know who own the Jk's. I've had 2 rads replaced, oil cooler, therm. Housing. Timing chain cover, three pressure tests and as of today I can still smell coolant and lose it over about three months. It still passes the pressure test too. I've gone over hoses, checked the oil cap and oil for coolant.... All clean. its a pain in the ass but I've learned to just live with it.
The only thing I didn't see you mention in that list of things you've replaced is the overflow container. I actually did a video on replacing mine because it was leaking. I'd be surprised if that's not your problem, because of everything you mentioned this could still seep a little bit and you not be able to see it visually and it will still pass all the pressure tests because that's not part of the overall pressurized system. Just a thought.
I’ve read that else where about the Bottle. The OAT has that strong smell and those bottles do vent. Thx for the informative video and bottle tip. I’m really handy with tools and hate dealerships. When the weather is warmer I’ll replace my over flow bottle.
Have a great holiday! 👍
Thank you for the video. Going to knock this out this weekend.
Thanks for excellent video. I just changed my 17 JK radiator and could not get coolant to flow and was dumbfounded. I was not aware of the air bleed on the thermostat housing. Thanks to your video I was able to bleed the system and was in business immediately. Also purchased the funnel...nice tool to own. Thanks for the tip!!
Good to know bc, I just replaced my radiator and burping the system on an incline does nothing and engine overheats...I'm going to use the bleeder today..
I hope this works!
Same leak, replaced, thanks for your helpful vid
Doing this right now, I've also had mine leaking for about 2 years. It didn't seem to fix itself so I figured it was time
Thanks !
Many videos here on RUclips don’t show prober bleeding the technique for doing so
Awesome vid, truly helped me out. Thank you!
Thank you so much! Saved me thousands
Excellent detailed video... loved it
Thanks for the video, very helpful! 😎👍
Well done and detailed video. Thanks!
I will recommend to Drain the Radiator just alittle to avoid that Mess. I did drained my radiator for just a minute and i had no mess at all went i disconnected the Hose.
Good job very helpful 👍
Man you rock!!! Thanks you saved me a pretty penny!
Just a point of interest: There is no heater core valve! Just dampers. therefore it does not matter where the temperature dial is set...The fluid is always circulating through the heater coil...
Great video. Would love to see you do a video related to your experiences with the JK's wide coolant temperature swings. I see 200 to 230+ regardless of ambient temps and altitude. I've never driven a modern vehical where the coolant temp gauge swings a bit above the center point when everything is running right. Seems like there are a lot of posts about this on the forums. Any opinions?
same here dan
Another you can do it video bobby. Thanks another good one
For what it's worth, your vehicle will do this on it's own over time. Fluid comes and goes from the over flow tank and it has it's own air vent to allow air to be released out of the system.
just subscribed...excellent video
Great video 👍⭐
Cool vid. Thanks man!
How many miles we're on your jk when you replaced the thermostat?
In my opinion it's a good idea to change the upper rad hose with the stat change after 5 years.
Great video as usual, but you do not have to turn on the "heat". Coolant flows through that heater core whether you turn that knob or not. When you turn that knob, you're only moving the BLEND DOOR ACTUATOR inside the air ducts to divert air around or over the heater core to get hot/cold air inside the cabin.... it doesn't change whether or not coolant flows in the heater core.
Some people stick to turning on the heat because some vehicles have shut off solenoids that prevent the heater core from circulating with the heat off.
great vid! thanks!
Maybe in my JKu is the same problem but I observed that coolant reserve tank loosing coolant not so much but there are not leaks around engine I will try thx for it
Good idea to replace it
Great video man. I have to say, It is a shame that jeep is an automatic!!!!
lol Sweet mirror! Automatic wave
Can I get the part numbers for the flip flops please? Thanks. 😋 Jokes aside. Nice work and thanks for making the effort to document.
the best tutorial on the procedure ever, thank you. How can I get a hold of this funnel?
I got mine on Amazon. I think I put a link in the video description
How long do you think you ran your Jeep until all the bubbles came out?
Thank you so very much.
How do you check your coolant temperature
I also have a 2009 Chevy Aveo5 (42,200 miles) with check engine code p0599 thermostat heater control circuit high. I believe I could change the thermostat part with this tutorial vid. Thanks.
Where did you get the tourque specs? I need to replace both the thermostats and oil filter housing on my 2014
Just flushed my system and didn’t realize...How much fluid do you use to refill your radiator?
Great video. No worries of brlt slipping from the water rinse?
Great video, who makes that funnel? Thanks in advance.
Thank you!
2019 jeep wrangler jl sport 3.6 does not have radiator or drain plug, so for this how do you flush and refill coolant on this jeep?
If the coolant keeps raising out of the funnel, would that be a sign of a bad thermostat? I replaced the water pump recently, but replaced the thermostat in Feb.
thanks
At 5:10 , Would it be less messy to drain from the Radiator Petcock about a gallon or so. This aught to drain the upper coolant hose. Or am I wrong ??
There is violent leaking from my thermostat housing, how can i tell if it is the thermostat or if it's the housing? It's a 99 ford explorer
Are those the OEM recommended flip flops or aftermarket? I must know this before I attempt to proceed with the thermostat replacement.
Thanks for the video, When you used the spill proof kit and were done, did you plug up the funnel and remove it put the radiator cap back on while the engine was running ? Thanks . I just did that and now wondering if I should have done that after turning the jeep off.
Just had mine replaced. I hope that was my leak.
where did you get the palm decal for the mirror.. save my hand from waving! also the temp question.. how does it appear in the dash.. I have a bully dog it can be displayed on.. Thanks for the tip.. I am getting a DTC code .. and it looks like coolant temp issue and I am trying a new thermostat
I have the EVIC system in mine... so I can display the temp using the steering wheel controls and read it on the dash.
how do you get antifreeze in the motor block?
I found out if you wait to long to put the cap on the radiator while it’s running , it will boil over . Shooting out of the over flow funnel
How long was “too long” ?
Is it possible to do this without the fancy funnel?
yes
EVERYONE! Look for almost invisible cracks in the goose neck of the MOPAR thermostat housing. It took me FOREVER to figure this out! My coolent level was always slowly dropping, but I couldn't figure where or how because there was never any visible sign, just a very faint odor of coolent. (Problem even continued after switching out the oil cooler.) When the check engine light told me to replace the thermostat at the 6-year mark, I found red goo on the thermostat housing dried over almost invisible hairline cracks in the goose neck. (I needed a magnifying glass to see them!) The coolent was slowly leaking out and evaporating before it ever had a chance to drip.
Just had exactly the same thing happen-- hairline crack in the thermostat housing, leaking just enough that i could smell it.
GREAT
I have a 2016 jku Sahara with the 3.6 l. My jeep did not come with a manual to tell me what type of coolant to use, can someone tell me?
My question is did you need to add more coolant somewhere after losing all that coolant removing the hoses? I mean I seen you put some in the funnel but it seems like an inch in there isn't much to replace what's been lost? Or am I wrong ?
I have the same small leak on my jk it’s been over 1yr since I spotted the leak haven’t been forced to change my thermostat but will soon! I do have a couple of questions for you.
1- did your check engine light ever went off?
2- did you ever see your temperature gauge move slightly over the normal temperature?
Got the same leak, Check engine never appeared for me thank god, but my temperature guage does go a bit above normal
2015 JK Sahara with 126,000km on it
So i tried this today, it ended up overflowing and making a big mess. not sure what if anything i did wrong.
Hello mate.i got mercedes a class 170 ,2005..my car blow air but dont give warm air..what i can do?all works before to i go in holliday, when i comeback give low warm air,but now it stop give warn air inside the cabin..
Hey CPO, thanks for the video, been a great help trying to burp my system as well. One question, how do you get the coolant in the funnel to stay so calm over 210°? Anytime I get near there, the funnel starts to boil over and overflow, and continues to even after I shut the Jeep off. Any tips on how to stop the boil over? Noticed you had yours up to 219 and still calm as a lake. : )
It boils over because when the radiator cap is off the system is at atmospheric pressure therefore the coolant will start boiling around 205-215 depending on your altitude. When the cap is on the atmospheric pressure is much different and the boiling point will be roughly 40-50 degrees higher.
Why do these jeeps run so hot to begin with? 205-220 .
@@overheadcam32 220 really isn't that hot for coolant. The coolant in my Cummins regularly reaches 230+ when I'm working her. The temp of the engine shouldn't rise too much if the cooling system is working properly.
Are you going to Jeep invasion this year, I’d like to check out your JKU in person.......
No..sorry. Maybe one day, but certainly not this year.
