The funniest thing about Piccolo's internal conversation with Nail is that, from an outside perspective, he just dunked on Big Bang Attack, paused, then went "Shit, that's good."
My favorite running joke with Gero, one that's always kept implicit until Kai Abridged spelled it out, is the way Gero is aware of DB but not DBZ, a total reversal from basically the entire rest of the cast lol It really makes him feel like he's from another era of dragon ball altogether, which is exactly the kind of character-taken-to-the-extreme writing that's perfect for an abridged
I think most of them DO remember Dragon Ball: Yamucha references his desert bandit days in the first episode, Gokū remembers being trained by Popo on the lookout, Tenshinhan asks Gero about his fights with Gokū at the Budokais, Piccolo apologizes to Tenshinhan for Piccolo Daimao killing Chiaotzu, Kuririn and Chiaotzu talking about their first deaths ("First time around was basically just Piccolo's dad being a dick!"), plus there's the obvious callout in Kai 1: "Aren't we enemies?" "NOBODY WATCHED DRAGON BALL!". Which obviously implies that they remember what happened, they just know that most people don't really care. Hell, even the narrator calls them out in the first season "And now, the characters who actually did anything in the last series, but not this one..." Whereas Gero not only sees the DB-Era as peak Dragon Ball, models his own cyborg body after the DB style, and bases ALL of his important calculations on DB-Era data, but is ACTUALLY unaware of the majority of events post-Gokū vs Vegeta. The main cast are aware of DB, they just know most of it doesn't matter anymore, and the majority to references to it are done for comedic effect. Gero is just genuinely ignorant of literally EVERYTHING that happens after Gokū vs Vegeta.
I really like that sped up disrobing on Piccolo's part. Piccolo is a straight man fighter. He's deliberate and purposeful. He's not a Saiyan, he's not there to get his rocks off by getting punched in the face, he's not a joke character. He's completely serious, taking Gero serious, and him tossing his weighted clothes aside really fast demonstrates this. Like Kaiser said, he's getting to the point. It doesn't feel like an editing move, it feels like a character move. I especially like the part where the clothes land at a high speed, and then the video returns to normal speed, and the cape slowly flutters down.
I think the fast fall followed by the cape fluttering at normal speed also gives the impression that Piccolo's weighted clothes are even heavier now, as opposed to still being at 100kg like they were during the Frieza saga.

He has gotten more work since though right? Including landing some big parts (ainz ool gown for example) and in some big animes. Oh, and he got a small part in super didn't he? Can't remember who though. Although, I also still agree, his voice is so awesome would love to hear even more of it!
I mean, he’s in Rwby’s latest season, Blue Lock, Ranking of Kings, and Moriarty the Patriot. I don’t know how much more work it is before it’s not little anymore though.
Since 2013 when DBZA as Cooler and Gero... over 40 different anime and games... how.. little? How Little? HOW LITTLE WORK? I was just listening to a few different Real Play or Limited Real Play with Scripted work Podcasts he's appeared in and i'll repeat again over 40 Anime and Games in varying roles from various voices to main star since 2013... And delivers high quality of a limited quantity work. Little? No... But Quality yes.
"This is the worst!" in a "Vegeta voice" is by far one of the most quotable things from this episode for me. As well as "olly olly oxen bitch!" I just love this episode all together honestly.
11:11 i've always wondered aabout the origin of gero's line "think of....namek." At first I thought it was bc piccolo is namekian, but then i realized that in the previous ep, gero didn't know what namek was. So was it gero fishing for a word, and namek, the new vocab term that kept f-ing him over in the last fight, seemed like the best word for him getting the jump on them for a change
This is gonna be my last DBZA Commentary for a while since I’m shipping off to bootcamp this Tuesday, I’ve kept up with every episode since you started doing this and I’m going to miss it so much. Thank you for creating such a wonderful show and I can’t wait to binge the next ten or so episodes once I’m able to. Wishing y’all well, can’t wait to see what comes next!
Guerrero's Gero and Cooler are so damn good. It's such a deep, commanding voice but he can make so many inflections, pitches, and emotions with that voice it's amazing. You instantly know what the character is thinking/implying.
19:33 YES! Thank you so much for making that point! It infuriates me when people look back at King Piccolo’s depiction as a demon and call it a retcon. Like Lani said there’s works that show them as both… like Doom, Warcraft, and Urusei Yatsura. King Piccolo did use his powers to trap the souls of his victims in limbo, one of the big driving forces that motivated Goku to make that journey beyond the heavens to Kami’s Lookout. Yes there’s races that are born into the role of demon or god… but they are still titles that can be earned.
21:32 I’m glad they touch on this topic as well. I always find myself going back to a Quote from Yu Yu Hakusho. “The ability to feel pain is not a weakness. It’s a strength. Pain tells a creature its vulnerabilities.”

"Pain is imperative when you are in peril, to give the mind con- TEEEEEEXT!" "So contextually speaking, how f*cked are you?" Piccolo had some badass quotes in this version of the Android/Cell Saga
My favourite part of Trunks meeting people again, is how you managed to keep it funny, AND carry all the weight and importance of the situation. Vegeta "glitching" on realizing Trunks is his son. Trunks having a minor anxiety attack that these are not the androids he was expecting, All of this culminating on Gero figuring out his way out of the situation, All of this was very funny and kept the plot going forward very efficiently. Bravo
AHHHH!! It’s been so cool watching this thing that you guys are doing. But man did I get tripped out seeing my face midway through😂😂 Honored that I was one of the few chosen. Love the other reactors dbza experience shown too!!❤❤❤
22:09 "What have I ever done to you?" "I meant recently!" I just realized that they used this joke in the second Puss in Boots movie, where Jack Horner says "What did I do to deserve this? I mean specifically?"
"Get back here, I wasn't _done!"_ The timing on the emphasis, between the line, the delivery, the footage, the sound design, just so much _punch_ in these edits, really moves these scenes into each other with the right energy for the pacing.
I liked the sped up Piccolo shot from a visual storytelling standpoint. It's one of the rare moments that Piccolo has been caught slipping and now he's pissed. He mostly maintains his composure with how he speaks, but he jumps right into action. Before falling into a bit of his old King Piccolo tendencies, as he starts ripping the wings off the butterfly. When you think about the banter back and forth with Vegeta, Vegeta probably let's it slide because he sees a lot of himself. Vegeta already proved his point, and Piccolo has been directly disrespected. All of that to say, it's a nice little character moment. It also makes for a nice echo after he loses to 17 & 18, and tells everyone to kiss his ass later. Why? Well, had Piccolo just finished off Gero, 17 & 18 wouldn't have been activated. The Z Fighters may or may not have found his lab after Trunks revealed that those weren't the correct androids. Then they could kill or rehabilitate 17 & 18 while they're still asleep. Cell hadn't shown up yet, so he probably wouldn't be on Piccolo's mind yet. Plus in the event that Cell killed Trunks and stole his time machine.... Dragonballs. Trunks comes back, gets sent back home, and Cell would've been another timeline's problem unless Trunks has his mom build a new machine while he trained to get stronger.
Maybe i am a little late and you Googled it, but here it is: Apparently Kaiser said a derogatory term for homosexual in the vicinity of mr Takei I dont know how he reacted, im just repeating what i read on dbza wiki
My favourite part of the opening scene of this episode is that because everyone else can't hear Nail, it completely changes the context of Piccolo's next line. "I know right? Big Bang Attack?....Shit, that's good!" It makes it seem like he just changed his mind about Vegeta's attack.
Honestly probably the best thing about this series is Kaiser slowly warming up and becoming way more relaxed, lighthearted and positive over the run. He was so worried and self conscious during the first episodes. I get as a creator you are very critical on your own work, especially older one, and some stuff may have not aged that well. And now look at him joking around and telling all kinds of insights and jokes. Season 3 is his baby and it shows.
I’m gonna call that bet and say the line they’re taking about comes from Deadzone. Piccolo: “Not so tough without your backup dancers, are you ugly?” Pepper: “Now why you gotta be throwing out mean words like that?!” Piccolo: “You know, that’s fair. How about I grab a couple of friends to try and murder you instead?” Pepper: “Well, personally, I think that would be uncalled f-“ *punched into wall* Piccolo: “You’re right. Because unlike you…” *fries him with ki-blast* “…I don’t need help.”
I'll gush on basically every video, but Guerrero's vocal performance resonates and elevates Gero's visual design _so damned well,_ it's my favorite aesthetic in all DBZA. So stoked to've learned that the centerpiece of the _Overlord_ dub is the same guy putting in the chops of a parody series. He deserves to give the world all he's got.
I personally believe this one goes especially fast (at least partially) because Piccolo's feathers were just a tad ruffled by the surrounding events. Between Gero getting the drop on him such that he apparently needed a senzu to recover and the good doctor subsequently ignoring him as a potential threat in-between... Even as the most level-headed member of the group I think it's fair to say he's mildly offended here. Far from the most unhinged we ever see him, but rather just the right amount of pissed off for a person in his circumstances.
For this episode in particular, I think Piccolo removing his clothes is actually done well to KEEP the pacing because it keeps in line with undermining the whole "weighted clothing" concept that was already called out and ridiculed with Frieza. Like, if it's a big moment, sure, play it up, but in this context it really helps keep the pacing.
agreed, i also think it works especially well for piccolo because like i believe lani said it really fits his character of "ok times up my turn fuck this" as id put it in that moment lol. I always felt like goku was the one who would be dramatic with his weighted clothed but i dont remember piccolo ever making that big of a deal of it he would just make sure to take them off unlike goku who ended up just either not having his underclothes be weighted or he just never takes them off i dont think its ever been explained which😂
@@JubioHDX Only time Piccolo's was mentioned was during the Raditz fight where Goku notes he was also wearing weighted stuff. But I think he takes it off because a big flowing cape can get in the way and the shoulder bit might restrict movement.
One of my favorite things about this episode is the end. Like when trunks shows up and the back and forth. It’s like the tension just racks and racks up then gero sees his opportunity. It was so well done film wise as well as comedy wise.
Yeah right!? Like to me it felt perfectly in character for him to be pretty straightforward and ready to fuck shit up! Compared to his boastful and brash Vegeta is or lack back and banter-full Goku is.
9:30 This is one of the best things about both DBZA and Hellsing Ultimate Abridged. The balance of creating comedy while maintaining the serious tone and the awesome moments is just *chef’s kiss*.
My favourite part of the mental conversation between Piccolo and Nail is how it would sound to the others. "I know, right? Big Bang Attack? ... ... ... Shit, that's good."
The speed of Piccolo coming down and throwing his attire is perfect, the speeding up is like demonstrating that he got his full power back due to the senzu bean.
I personally think the shot where Piccolo flies down and takes off his weighted gear is a great speed. Specifically, it's because he's just eaten a Senzu bean, so I feel like it emphasizes the sudden rush of energy he's just gotten. It's badass.
The "speed removal" of clothes was always something that I found amusing in the show, I don't know why. Just the way it unceremoniously thuds to the floor immediately I guess. Feels like a joke in-of-itself.
13:42 - That also means that, as far as power scaling, Piccolo is the strongest in base form at that point in the story. Like, all the way up to the Time Chamber, Piccolo has the strongest base form in the Android saga because he trained with Goku as a Super Saiyan. Which SHOWS his growth! He became strongest, but still lets the Saiyans take the lead.
I love Piccolo's can opener bit, it always came off as supremely badass to me, especially with the editing. Him taking on Gero is one of my favorite moments of abridged.
It is badass, and if Vegeta wasn’t there providing commentary it would have passed without issue. But I see why it landed flat here in-story. Vegeta is one of the reigning champs of the provocative one-liner (second only to Tienshinhan) and knows how to keep it simple and short if additional context is needed. Take Vegeta’s line “It’s time to put you in a home. A FUNERAL home!”. The first part works, but kind of a meh line. The second part elevates the first into something far funnier. By contrast Piccolo’s line was a bit too chatty, and unnecessarily so. He could have just stuck with “Just call me the can opener” and started throwing down and that would have worked. By adding additional clunky context, the joke gets less funny and more stilted. Which kind of works with Piccolo’s character since he’s socially inept and was probably trying to one up Vegeta in the one-liner department only to choke at the last minute (he does way better at clearly off-the-cuff lines where he doesn’t have time to prepare or think about it first, like with Cell and 17). But this all works well, narratively speaking, since Vegeta’s response to that really makes the whole thing hilarious.
Hey TFS, you guys probably won’t read this but I’m currently at home with a fever with symptoms matching appendicitis (Which I really hope it isn’t). Your show is amazing and it makes my day that the first thing I see when I open my phone is a new Creator Commentary. Thanks, you guys!
13:13 "Now what we're about to see is very surprising." Piccolo did get a massive boost on Namek, and then trained with a super saiyan for 3 years afterwards. It does not surprise me that he is at this level.
12:30, Gohan relied more on his sight than sensing energy, that actually checks out b/c in Super Hero he doesn't think to sense so he didn't know it was Piccolo.
Dragon Ball Online lore (which Toriyama personally approved back in the day) does mention the idea that Namekians are born either good or evil. And there's an entire plot/questline revolving around evil Namekians being demonic in nature that Towa and Mira want to abuse, with actual Piccolo there helping you along the way on Dende's request. So yeah, demon slug aliens. One of the subclasses for the Dragon Clan of the Namekian race is also entirely based around King Piccolo's spawn summoning, the Poko Priest.
Also, King Piccolo (and by proxy, his son/reincarnation, Piccolo) was the EVIL half of the nameless Namekian. He was a regular alien, but he split himself into Kami (who is pure good and currently the god of Earth) and King Piccolo (the embodiment of all his evil), so in that regard he is the opposite of a god, a devil, so...yeah, demon is fitting.
Plus, there are the implications that the namekian hero can use king piccolo's demon creation. I think there is an explanation in game but i can't remember it.
"Delicious magical science" Blending the two is one of the things I adore about the setting. Like Towa from Xenoverse, who is a *demon mad scientist from Hell and also the future.* So unabashedly silly and awesome at the same time. Edit: Xenoverse counts! I'm with you on that one Lani!

It's so nice to see that even after all these years, you guys have seemingly the same enthusiasm for the show that most of us had as it was being released
I'm so happy that Dead Zone is next. Its my favorite of all of the movies you all did, it's a fantastic edit, the VA and writing is all on point, and it's incredibly funny, even if you haven't seen any of the rest of DBZA (though it is funnier if you have).
My favourite line in all of DBZA is coming up relatively soon! Vegeta: this is new, feeling pride in someone else... Unfortunately it's overshadowed BY ALL THIS UNYIELDING RAGE! 😂 Fantastic.
15:58 i always loved this speed for piccolo. i sort of took it as how powerfully the sensu hits, as well as piccolo sorta flexing in an interesting way
The "lovable asshole" trope only works if they get taken down a notch every now and then. Otherwise you get just assholes. You can see an easy example when the talk of Captain Marvel comes up, since people compare her to Tony Stark and how come he can be an asshole and people like him and she's disliked. Tony had a whole character that constantly kept him in check in Pepper, meanwhile Carol had...a power limiter so when she removes it she just becomes more awesomer? Yeah, not the best way to have a "lovable asshole". So yeah, Vegeta HAS to get his shit kicked in from time to time so that he may continue to be so full of himself.
@15:15 I always thought it was Piccolo being brought to max power by the sensu bean, and for that moment, he's moving at combat speed rather than talking speed. Sort of a, "You think you stole enough energy to beat me? I can kick your a** in three seconds flat."
Seeing Kaiser grow in hype right at the end of this one is life-sustaining. You can tell he is legitimately hype for these. ...trying to think back now, but what episode did he start doing the episode breakdowns again? Was it around this time, or later? I feel those were very much a case of excitement inspiring more ideas.
7:57 "The dogs can't even look up"would be a perfect sentence for Dr. Gero at that moment when he was upside down, and a little molded for the scene would be "mad dogs can't even look up".

I still can't believe how little work Chris Guerrero has gotten since TFS, he's a phenomenal voice actor.
He has gotten more work since though right? Including landing some big parts (ainz ool gown for example) and in some big animes. Oh, and he got a small part in super didn't he? Can't remember who though.

I love his “…GET THE F**K OUT HERE!!!”
Same here. Same here.
"And there's my door!" is one of the best 'why are the heroes standing around doing nothing' moments, because of how low key / subtle it is.

Something that would be reinforced when it turns out later that Saiyans can ascend to godhood with the right circumstances.
21:32 I’m glad they touch on this topic as well. I always find myself going back to a Quote from Yu Yu Hakusho. “The ability to feel pain is not a weakness. It’s a strength. Pain tells a creature its vulnerabilities.”

@@TomSmith-ll2lp As of Xenoverse 2, all I know that are for certain Nail’s techniques are the Mystic Flash Ultimate and the Do or Die Super.
He already has a better one in German. "Hell Spiral".
Never thought about all of that
The argument between Trunks and the crew escalating until Dr. Gero makes his escape is one of my favourite DBZA moments.
Now I want to know Kaiser’s George Takei story. Can’t just drop that and then not tell it.
Maybe i am a little late and you Googled it, but here it is:
Apparently Kaiser said a derogatory term for homosexual in the vicinity of mr Takei
I dont know how he reacted, im just repeating what i read on dbza wiki
My favourite part of the opening scene of this episode is that because everyone else can't hear Nail, it completely changes the context of Piccolo's next line.
"I know right? Big Bang Attack?....Shit, that's good!"
It makes it seem like he just changed his mind about Vegeta's attack.
It's like he had to think about it and then realized how cool it is.
19:33 Daima basically confirming this whole exchange about Namekians being demon adjacent while also technically being aliens.
Piccolo's movement being sped up after getting the senzu bean is so funny to me and absolutely works

Pepper: “Now why you gotta be throwing out mean words like that?!”
Piccolo: “You know, that’s fair. How about I grab a couple of friends to try and murder you instead?”
Pepper: “Well, personally, I think that would be uncalled f-“ *punched into wall*
Piccolo: “You’re right. Because unlike you…” *fries him with ki-blast* “…I don’t need help.”
@@ammash3000 that line is good, but there were mentioning a line while at least one if them didn't remember Dead Zone was next.
The clip of Piccolo zooming to the ground and taking his clothes off to fight is done perfectly, man. I didn't even realize you had doubts lol
To me that was like "Kick ass mode activated."
@@VioletteZero Literally flipped a swtch
Agree. I always presumed it was "Senzu Bean Healing Complete, I'm gonna hurt you"
I personally believe this one goes especially fast (at least partially) because Piccolo's feathers were just a tad ruffled by the surrounding events.
I like how bulma always shows up out of nowhere like why tf are you even there!
I kinda like thinking that the stripping became a bit of a habit. Like Grey in Fairy Tail.
agreed, i also think it works especially well for piccolo because like i believe lani said it really fits his character of "ok times up my turn fuck this" as id put it in that moment lol.

The speed up of Piccolo in editing works really well in this instance. The pause after he eats the senzu bean contributes to it.
One of my favorite things about this episode is the end. Like when trunks shows up and the back and forth. It’s like the tension just racks and racks up then gero sees his opportunity. It was so well done film wise as well as comedy wise.
I love that King Kai didn't even disconnect from George Takai. He wasn't even talking to anybody else. At this point he's just learned to accept it

It's like he stopped to think about it and then realized how cool it is.
"You get out here and fight me blindly like a MAN!" Is one of my favorite lines 😂 Vegeta being so unreasonable is always funny
"...or... mandroid...".
"Korin likes it"
Is just delivered perfectly 😂
I don’t know why but the way Gero says SHIT when he finds out they know about his secret lab is freaking hilarious.
I love the steady progress of these guys getting more and more excited to watch the later, more refined content they created.

13:13 "Now what we're about to see is very surprising." Piccolo did get a massive boost on Namek, and then trained with a super saiyan for 3 years afterwards. It does not surprise me that he is at this level.
I often wondered why King Kai was seemingly always "on the phone" with George Takei, and right when we were going to get an answer, we were denied.
I myself am confused too :')
12:30, Gohan relied more on his sight than sensing energy, that actually checks out b/c in Super Hero he doesn't think to sense so he didn't know it was Piccolo.
Looking back with Guerrero's portrayal of Dr. Gero I can see why he's perfect for playing Ainz. Got both comedy and menace down perfectly.
Ayy good to see jack(ishinobi) and definitely not definitive get featured. They've been a lot of fun to watch along with
Dragon Ball Online lore (which Toriyama personally approved back in the day) does mention the idea that Namekians are born either good or evil.
"Delicious magical science"
Blending the two is one of the things I adore about the setting. Like Towa from Xenoverse, who is a *demon mad scientist from Hell and also the future.* So unabashedly silly and awesome at the same time.

Hate i doubt but I bet alot people love to see a cocky jerk get decked
He needs something to surpass, which is why there's always somebody to kick his ass to keep his ego (not the form) in check
Vegeta didn’t deserve a win till arguably RoF. That’s the only case I can think where he absolutely should’ve gotten the win
@@LameMovieCo Exactly my thoughts. The MCU is doomed unless they surprisingly change the fate.
@15:15 I always thought it was Piccolo being brought to max power by the sensu bean, and for that moment, he's moving at combat speed rather than talking speed. Sort of a, "You think you stole enough energy to beat me? I can kick your a** in three seconds flat."
