That is something I didn't even realize till driving home from the movie
and it was also really funny. Frieza's like "you're making me put effort into this so im going golden" then for the next hour gets smacked around by broly. Btw, when frieza said he wanted to be taller i got an OG dragonball vibe and remembered that general red wanted the dragon balls to be taller too. My mind went straight to that.

When the Broly movie was released, Broly's survival WAS the tension that I was thinking about the entire time. I was not thinking about who wins or loses, but only whether Broly would survive the fight or not. And in the end, Broly did survive, and I am so thankful for that.
Yeah. I also felt bad for him when he was getting beaten to death by gogeta near the end. That shit was savage.

Toriyama truly went above and beyond to make the "dumb but cool" Broly from the past into the "sympathetic and cool" Broly that we love dearly.
@Patbacknitro That's not weakness. I felt very much the same, since I think that was the very first time that Broly stared into the face of death, rather than pain as he expected from Paragus. Thankfully, Cheelai made the wish and saved him. That's possibly one of the most excellent ways of using the Dragon Balls. Usually they are used to fix damages after the fight is over. Instead, this time it's used to end the fight, period.

Toriyama always has had this level of writing capability. DBZ and DB also hold some really really amazing writing.
This movie was a return to form for Dragon Ball in terms of writing.

@@bennogb5069 I agree but I think Z is much worse than Dragon Ball in general. The only Z saga that's better than any Ball saga is the Saiyan Saga. After that, I think the quality dips hard.
Personally I dislike Cell saga’s writing. Everyone seizes the idiot ball and doesn’t let go, powerups are everywhere and quickly made meaningless, half the cast shows up at the final battle just for the purpose of being hostages (at least everyone contributed in some way against Frieza!) and Trunks...just wasted potential imo.
It's worth noting that the "Have fun, Freeza" line doesn't even remotely happen in the japanese dub. There's no line there by Goku. That was completely brilliantly written in by Funimation

Funimation really knows how to do the soundtracks well, as well as have fun with dialogue when it comes to Dragon Ball. It's great.

I love how when Gogeta goes SSGB Broly was never able to hit him once and the music changes to a tragedy.
Yeah, because Broly is the protagonist, the moment Gogeta goes blue the actual struggle we should fret begins. Gogeta is the unbeatable antagonist that the hero can't even touch.

Noting the character animation, my favorite is Broly's kiddish moments. It was subtle but when they talked to Frieza, Broly pokes Friezas floaty pod thing and it just slowly drifts away while everyone else was talking
I liked that part too. He's all, "Whuh? What's this thing? *boop*".
He's so freakin' adorable, and it's so messed up to see him freak out and try to rip off the collar
This alone was one of my favorite Broly moments.

It's honestly why I really want them to get to the End of Z when the anime comes back. I know that it won't be directly written by Toriyama like the screenplay for this was, but I'm just very interested in generally where Toriyama wants to take Uub and what abilities he would give him. Also, I just want a new incarnation of Uub to supplant the poorly executed Majuub from GT like Super Broly did to DBZ Broly.
Jonathan Chambers I actually thought the other world Tournament when he meets Pikkon was Canon and also with Janemba since that where we first saw Gogeta
I would love if the next movie Villain that is made canon is Cooler. I'd be down with him being brought back. Maybe have Cooler also be a decent guy, kinda like how Frost pretended to be only Cooler is actually genuine or something. Have like a civil war in the Frieza Force where some join the Cooler Corps or something and they start fighting. I wouldn't want Cooler to get a Gold form like in Heroes though, I would prefer he just keep his 5th form to keep him unique from Frieza. I dunno, I'm just spitballing here

Can confirm; googled "trunks", got lots of purple-haired boys and eventually, a single picture of a clothing item.
Even I, someone who only *just* got into Dragon Ball and has barely searched anything related to it, had 98% Trunks and only 2% swim trunks.
Go figure, the second image of actual swim trunks to show up had Trunks on them.

I actually don't necessarily see Bardock as a "good guy" in this version, so much as he's an example of the "even evil has standards" and "even evil has loved ones" tropes. Like, he's still perfectly happy and willing to conquer planets and destroy and enslave different species and races of people on those planets, but he does care about his wife and his sons to at least some extent. And I do say sons because he does ask about Raditz when he returns to answer Frieza's summons to the planet.
That was the first time anyone mentioned Raditz in over twenty years and it was in a flashback. Poor Raditz.
It's an example of protagonist and hero not necessarily meaning the same thing. The main character doesn't have to be the good guy and the good guy doesn't have to be the main character.
Remember raditz was still the first saiyen to reach ssj3
I also see parallels to the Ancient Greek soldiers or Roman Legionnaires. Or even modern imperialism. To the people being conquered, the Saiyans must be little more than invading villains, but from the perspectiveof an imperialistic culture like the Saiyans, Bardock is just a soldier with a wife and kids back home.

Can we talk about the nice parallel to dying Namek with Freeza and Broly? Out of nowhere, Freeza finds himself alone in a burning hellscape with a /very/ angry super saiyan who's transformation he caused.
Soopakoopa64 and Frieza kills Paragus in a similar fashion as he killed vegeta
Hell even the movie drew the parallels when freeza remembered killing Krillin. He must have forgotten what happened to him after.

Now that Frieza has been made aware of fusion and its power it’d be the perfect way to introduce Cooler. I can totally imagine Frieza looking for a fusion partner so he can defeat Gogeta. And as he’s going through the roster of his army he eventually just sighs in defeat before begrudgingly setting out to visit Cooler.
Now that freezer knows about fusion he might want to use his last resort
Speaking of the tension, I think you guys are right in that the tension isn't 'Will the Earth be destroyed?' Throughout the entire movie, I wasn't worried in the slightest about Goku, Vegeta, and the gang. I was worried for Broly, Cheelai and Lemo. There really was something unique about it, too. They're not *THE* main cast of Dragon Ball. For all I knew, it was entirely possible that Broly would die, and Cheelai and Lemo would get wiped out by Frieza, none of them to ever be revived, and it was an awesome new feeling of terror to have for these characters.

I'm surprised there was no mention of how the Frieza Force finally fixed their scouters so that when they read a power they can't quantify, instead of exploding, they just blank out. It was such a little thing, but when Lema tried to measure Broly's power and it turned into dashes instead of exploding, it seemed like a really cool piece of continuity.

@@gman2570 Probably. It was still a fun detail, and I'm a little surprised that TeamFourStar, a group of very capable critics and a collective lexicon of Dragon Ball lore didn't mention it.

i would say gold is need just so you know the scouter can handle it without blowing up
@@gman2570 wasn't golden frieza during revival of f at 100 quintillion power level? No way they could improve scouters enough to not explode cause 100 quintillion is a huge jump from 180k.
I loved how King Cold flat out says Freeza is an even more ruthless person. It's like he's basically saying, "By the way, if you thought I was a bad ruler, it's about to get a lot worse."
On a more somber note, RIP Chris Ayres. I believe this was his last performance as Frieza.

One of my favorite things about the fight scenes that you guys didn't mention is the different in fighting styles between Vegeta and Goku. Vegeta was all brutal. Pure saiyan-style "I'm gonna kick your ass with my power". Goku, on the other hand, is using legit martial arts. He's knocking Broly off blanace by using his own momentum against him. He is dodging moves from the same Broly that just beat the crap out of Red Vegeta by just staying calm and observing. It really shows the different between their upbringing and training.
Oooh yes indeed, the Red Goku fight was hell of satisfying with him knocking Broly on the ground with a judo technic
Totally agree. In Vegeta’s defense though, he has grown like crazy as a fighter. When you look at his old style vs his style in this movie, it’s crazy how much better he is. He’s not nearly as arrogant and “shoot first ask questions later.” And his technique and strategy has grown big time.
i wonder how nappa influenced vegeta's growth. i want more flashbacks to their youth. so cool

2) that was one thing that kept me glued to the screen. Like Vegeta was just a king against a subject "you're not experienced enough young man" and Goku was sending the same message but using techniques instead of wrestling with him how Vegeta did
Eh,it's never really been consistent. Always changing. Ever the creators seem confused to me. So many times they'll say Vegeta is a prodigy from childhood,and thinks a lot while Goku doesn't and then they'll flip it around depending on who they're fighting.

It's cool that this film and Infinity War are showing franchises that the narrative doesn't always have to revolve around the main characters all the time. When Gogeta shows up, the focus of the fight really shifts to whether or not Broly can survive.
Cause The Dark Knight revolving around The Joker, Gordon, and Harvey wasn't a thing before, right? Or dozens of other films that existed before. Why do DB fans generally seem so sheltered? Like DB is the only medium in existence.

As for the "dozens of other films", most franchises today aren't following them at all because studios have a box office checklist. The OP clearly mentioned an MCU film yet you act as if DB is the only franchise (not medium) being referred to here. **facepalm**
Something you realized...Broly became that strong just from fighting monsters, exercise, and drinking bug fluids. He really did gain that much power by doing push-ups, sit-ups, and drinking LOTS OF JUICE.

@@itsacharcoalice I think the point was his whole quest for revenge against the king was misguided since he realized that the king was right about Broly's power (It was mentioned in the ToP that saiyans with a transformation like Kale were destined to self destruct from their power overloading). Paragus was a lousy father who put a shock collar on his son to tame him in order to use him as a tool for revenge. The end of his character arc is realizing he put his son through hell to get revenge on someone that predicted the disaster that Paragus caused

Yeah, they actually leave it ambiguous when he talks Paragus how much king Vegeta's actions are due to envy and how much to legitimate fear.
He is in no way a good guy and it's shown to be furious and bitter about someone surpassing his son but, as mentioned, he could have just killed him, and he doesn't do the "stop joking, he will be never stronger than my son" that a Dragon Ball character would do, implying there was some actual, legitimate fear. Which still doesn't excuse his decision because it's part of what destroyed Broly's life, but it was more than just envy.
I think it's also pretty nice that literally the only thing that make Broly a threat to the Sayans is Sayan culture itself, because it actually ties in with Frieza's reason to destroy them.

@@Kaiser_MHA That's kinda what happened, though. The scouters suddenly ratcheted up, then cut out when they would naturally have exploded. The whole prologue shows varying levels of technological advancement. You notice they kinda suggest Saiyans didn't have Ki attacks around the time Broly and Vegeta were born. Freeza's mentions the Saiyans stalking him are carrying weapons, and Pargus of course carries that pistol, and while Pargus's ship had guns on it, Bardock's didn't.
@@damienhailey118 Though hiding weapon-armed soldiers in the palace weapons could also be explained by an attempt at stealth, believing their snipers could remain hidden by using weapons instead of ki.
Armed ships just seems like common sense whether they can use ki or not, since Saiyans are supposed to not be able to survive in space and would be defenceless without them.

The lack of weapons is an oddity that doesn't make any sense unless you take it as a sign of the Saiyans being idiots or arrogant enough to assume no-one would dare attack them. Both of which seem pretty in-character for Saiyans.
I also love that when Goku has Broly paralyzed, what Goku says ACTUALLY SINKS IN A BIT!
He gets through to Broly for a small bit. I loved that.
Omg I loved that moment too! Like some of the words get through and it ALMOST gets Broly to stop, but it's not quite enough and he winds up falling further into madness after almost climbing out of it. It was beautiful and sad at the same time.
One part I loved was Goku doing a boxing warm up and kinda taunting Broly before they fight so good.

I love the idea that Broly gave Paragus his scar. I like to think that the events were Paragus shot Bah’s ear off, Broly took Bah’s ear as a memento, When Paragus tried to take it off him Broly attacked him out of anger, and only then did Paragus give Broly the shock collar to keep him in line.

My headcannon for why Goku wants Broly to call him Kakarot:
Alright, so we know Goku doesn't care about the Saiyan race. They were all murderers and they have almost no redeeming qualities and quite frankly, the only Saiyan Goku actually got along with was Vegeta, and even that was hard to get to. There's Tarble too, but Goku doesn't know him THAT well.
But the thing is, Goku loves being a Saiyan. If it weren't for the fact his race was made up of a bunch of dicks, he'd probably have tons of Saiyan pride. And in comes Broly, who is like the perfect friend for Goku. He's strong, but not evil. He loses control, but not intentional, and he has a ton of potential. Goku's saiyan pride is stimulated by this, and for the first time ever, he probably feels proud to be part of the Saiyan race.

Don't forget about the universe 6 saiyans. I think they have helped Goku to have a different view of the Saiyans than he previously held. Broly just helped confirm that the Universe 7 Saiyans weren't necessarily all bastards like Raditz, Nappa, and Vegeta.

One of my favourite bits is after Vegeta vs Broly, Vegeta doesn't actually get beaten to a pulp and THEN Goku has to jump in. Vegeta doesn't actually get shit on in this film and it's so much justice to his character. Also, I lost my shit when Broly starts attacking Whis!

Just saw it, absolutely fantastic, everyone in the theatre laughed when Frieza started getting his ass kicked, I’m also glad Bardock actually tried to hold off the supernova, to make up for changing the canon Bardock story

One of the saddest things in the whole series was when freeza is destroying planet vegeta and it zooms in on his scouter and you just see the number dwindle to 0. The music, and animation just made it a heavy scene.
My biggest tension was whether Broly was going to die or not lol
There is that one thing you guys didn't point out, and that is during the final battle of Gogeta Blue vs Broly
When Gogeta used the Soul Punisher on Broly, *THAT* was supossed to be the final blow. But Gogeta looked surprised and then smiled after seeing Broly not only survived but also take almost no damage from it, proving that he is indeed a Pure-Hearted Saiyan for surviving the Soul Punisher, and in case you forget, that power is meant to one shot enemies with evil hearts and soul
The funny thing is, even after confirming Broly isnt evil at all. Gogeta still fires him a fucking full charge ultra dramatic finish Kamehameha, that will totally vaporized him. Like, that's Gogeta for you and why he is better than Veggetto. Gogeta does shit right and less play till the fusion ends on the most important moments
I think that they did the kamahamaha because they had no other way to knock broly out since he keeps getting up and attacking. That soul punisher attack was to knock him out. So gogeta made the decision to finish it since they don't have much time to think of another way. But broly was saved which you see gogeta smiling at the end of it. That just my interpretation of it lol

The more powerful Gogeta gets, the more relaxed he is. The more powerful Vegito gets, the more serious he is.
Buu Saga is Vegito at his weakest, and he constantly toys with his opponent while spouting one-liners. Vegito Blue in the Zamasu fight instantly goes all out while holding nothing back.
Gogeta during the Janemba fight is him at his weakest, and he instantly goes all out to obliterate his opponent. When Gogeta comes back in GT, he constantly toys with his opponent to the point that he runs out of fusion time.

I just want to point out the irony of Paragus getting executed the way he does. Out to save Broly he executed this poor saiyan guy like he was nobody for some convenience. And now here he is being executed in the same exact way by Frieza, like he's a nobody for some convenience.
Also how the dimension breaking was ELUDED TO in the super series. Whis was worried that reality would shatter if two gods of destruction (or at least people comparable to gods) would clash, and here they are years later actually paying off that hint.
In the ending scene there is a call back to Goku having to have the word "repugnant" defined. Just how Goku delivers the line "From what I've heard, this planet is repugnant...So I brought you some good stuff from Earth!" It made me think of TFS Goku...even the people I saw it with had the same thought.

I honestly appreciate 2 things the most: Toriyama making Broly a more likeable character through better (real) personality, and a Fusion actually doing something with substance

The part Where Gogeta was about to fire off his Kamehameha was scary. Goku’s Half knew Broly wasn’t evil, yet he charged up an attack With the intent to kill him. And Broly was just fully and utterly terrified where his insanity broke off and was horrified and screaming in fear. His Pupils even returned, His whole life just flashed before him. It made you feel bad and unsure if you should root for Gogeta, he was merciless.
That moment made you realize Vegeta seemingly took over for a moment, convincing him that they might absolutely have to do it.
And that grin when the wish works, GOD I've never been so satisfied for an attack to *miss.*
It was most likely a mercy kill. By that point in the movie, Broly was pretty much unstoppable and couldn't be talked down. If Gogeta didn't kill him before he unfused, they would have all been fucked.
If I recall from some of the Buu saga dubs, Gogeta is in many ways the worst of Vegeta and Goku: Their combined arrogance, Vegeta's will to kill, and Goku's unquenchable passion for absurdly destructive fights.

When Goku was slapped around in his god form that was one of my most favorite parts of the movie. Because Goku once again did his stupid where he wouldn't go all out immediately (not going Blue from the start), even though Vegeta made it pretty clear that they can't mess around with this enemy already. So when Goku tries to hold him down and Broly reverses it and starts slapping him around I just love Goku's pained expression and the look of his face basically going "Oh fuck, I made a huge mistake!"
Well you see Vegeta was gonna totally murder Broly but Goku senses that he isn't bad. That's not to say that Goku doesn't stupidly hold back but he had his reasons

"What you ever seen a first person perspective in a fight in Dragonball?" Yeah, when Trunks cut Frieza in half. Grated, it was a finisher instead of a fight, but is still _blew my fucking mind_ when I saw it.
Also when Trunks destroyed the androids, there was a few second first person scene of Trunks punching, granted it didn't look very good.

When you think about it Frieza's motivation is identical to Commander Red's from the Red Ribbon Army, but unlike commander Red nobody would dare question Frieza's motives because they're all too afraid of him.
I would like to think that freeza's wish idea was a call back to dragon ball.
My favourite line in the whole movie was when Goku and Vegeta were learning the fusion dance and Vegeta says "I'd rather just let Broly kill me". Sabat's delivery of the line had me in tears.
Who thought a broly movie would be the best dragon ball movie one day...

At that point he wouldn’t even need Super Saiyan God to be on the same level with Goku and Vegeta.

I mean...literally every saiyan that’s currently alive (that had a tail) has turned Great Ape so technically Goku, Vegeta and Broly could all go ssj4 if they trained hard enough. And I don’t want none of that blutz wave bullshit from GT for Vegeta he gotta earn the form

Freeza is basically a comic relief "villain"...

Ever since he showed up in super, I've wanted him to get more time to just be funny. The idea of the former big bad being comic relief is such a dragon ball concept.
Hyper Potion well it does need to be controlled otherwise it will be hard to take him seriously.
That's exactly what's ruined him. He was one of the most well written devilish villains in the series and he's ruined by being turned into a gag character? I know dragonball has gag elements but that doesnt mean anyone and everyone should become a joke.
Revolver Ocelot so far he isn’t a gag character he just has funny moments. Otherwise you could call Goku a gag character and look at all of his serious moments like working with Freeza to take out Jiren.

A movie focusing on other characters rather than the good old cast and even making a protagonist out of the villain is a breath of fresh air. I don't know if that was intended, but I appreciated it nonetheless.
Oh, it was 100% intended. Why do you think so many of the regular suspects had so little screen time, with a fan-favorite like Gohan not even getting a shout-out?
@@jonathonbartos5420 the real question is why do they let frieza live. I felt so bad for the people of that planet during the invasion. I also have how they manage him somewhat goofy. I think cell would've been a better fit for the villain turned good. He was batshit crazy, but at least he fought for the sake of it.
That's what Marvel did with Infinity War, the movie is about Thanos, not the Avengers or The Guardians Of The Galaxy. As we know these characters and we've grown up with them and love them. Dragon Ball Super Broly is properly named, it's a movie about Broly.
