The continuous line technique looks amazing, but you are right it seems rarely taught. That’s what makes your channel so fabulous! (and your courses). Your channel is an awesome resource. To have a technique where you can capture the essence of a scene is so satisfying. You’re well on the way to 100k subscribers. 😊
It is strange that anyone who purports to like art hasn’t grasped one of the fundamental principles of art. The artist creates not only what they see, but what they feel. Your art (Toby) has a joy about it, I can see your emotion in your art. If anyone wants hyper realistic art they could always take a photograph (also an artistic representation). The only ‘cheating’ in art is if you sign your name to someone else’s work.
I was taught continuous line drawing in high school 1975-1977. I am happy to see it still lives on with you. I enjoy it very much. Thank you for the tips.
Toby, as you know I really appreciate your outlook in your courses. You are an excellent instructor. I have to say that this is one of your best short videos and you make your case clearly about the reasons continuous line drawing is so valuable. I have done this kind of drawing but confess to thinking it is a path to more serious drawing. This has me convinced that it can also be a finished product with no apologies necessary.
Thanks for the video. I have learnt not to give in to my impulse to start again on the paper. Now I draw a single line, even if I want to continue drawing elsewhere on the paper. If necessary, I stop with the pen in order to continue. My eyes became more and more detached from the paper - but not the pencil! And I was pleasantly surprised by the result. The seven arguments are absolutely convincing.
I love Toby that YOU love your art and can deflect the criticism that you hear so ably. I follow a few artists on RUclips..I like it love them all for different reasons..well that's art. I love your pictures...I'd like to see more of your work. Thankyou for such encouraging ad interesting videos 😊

Well, It’s not my thing, (particularly for trees & windows) but it is fun to play around with as a technique to try and master. 😊 Love watching you do it and being intrigued by your skill.
Seems a bit intimidating at first if you have not tried this before especially if you don't have steady hands. nevertheless, it's a great technique, combining observational skills with creative flair and being aware and mindful of each stroke without unnecessary complexity. definitely worth a try! thanks for the great video Toby!
Perhaps now and then you could do a drawing in real time instead of speeded up? I love this style and plan to do some continuous line drawing, but I’m pretty sure I have an unrealistic view on how long a simple drawing takes. Thanks, as always!
Hi Marsha, almost all of my 100s of videos are in real time, so if you check those out you'll find the speed I sketch at. The sped up sketches in this video were mostly urban sketches in my normal style. So check out any of my other videos to find an answer to your question!
Heigh, ho, Toby! Back to sketching after a whole new shoulder, etc. Quick question - on continuous line drawing, after the color is dried, is it okay to go back and do stronger inking in some areas? I.e., continuing the continuous, so to speak. TY. Enjoyed this practice. Frances
Toby...sorry i beg to differ. Im still new to urban sketching but not new to painting. For me...continuous line drawing creates too many hard edges and not really loose. Infact to me just sketching outline as required is enough and rest colours will take care. Example if im sketching a tree...i would just draw some broken outlines and inner curves...then go for colour to get the values...this way i will savetime and do quick sketches in urban sketching. I feel continuous lines create more irregular caged lining...looks more cartoonish for me. I hope im wrong...as most of the famous Urbansketchers say exactly like you. Like Lynn chapman in her book too😊

Thank you so much!
I had never seen continuous line drawing before I found your channel, and it is pretty cool to watch. Fun to do as well.
Awesome, thank you!
I think your art is fascinating and fun. You can draw anything. I love the loose continuous line drawing. But I just have to copy at this point.
You can do it :)

Fair enough! It's definitely not for everyone :)

Yes absolutely ok, be careful it doesn't t become too illustrative unless that's the style you're after
I recommend a vid "Drawing from photos vs drawing from life" by drawing art academy - very interesting
Great suggestion!
Hi Toby. What happened to your thumb? (If it’s even our business.) Nosey Darryl 😊
Lopped off the end cutting some chestnuts 🤣 and the finger got got as well 😬😬
@@TobySketchLoose Ow! I did that a lot in school too, cutting boards for models. Ya gotta be more careful!

I think your definition of loose is different to mine, and that's ok
