My Flax/Chia Mix & Omega 6:3 Ratio Chart

  • Whole flax must be ground to be assimilated. Chia, not so much. Though flax is highest of the seeds in omega 3 fatty acids, chia is a close second. They both have excellent health benefits including protein and fiber. In addition, flax offers magnesium and iron; chia-- calcium, phosphorous and zinc. For this reason I grind both together, and due to the volatility of omega 3 fatty acids, I store just a bit in the refrigerator, and the rest in the freezer, refilling the refrigerator jar, from the freezer, as needed.
Keeping a healthy ratio of omega 6 to omega 3 fatty acids is very wise due to the anti-inflammatory nature of omega 3s, and the inflammatory affect of excessive omega 6 fatty acids. Ideal levels are a ratio of 1:1 to 4:1. Omega 6s are in an abundance, especially in processed foods because they are very high in processed (nearly all!) oils.
The best recommendation is to reduce your omega 6 fatty acids, and increase the omega 3 fatty acids. This chart will help you understand what foods to be cautious of, or avoid, and which foods to include in abundance. On a whole food, strictly plant based or vegan diet, our most abundant sources include flax seeds, chia seeds, urad dal (mungo beans), walnuts, and many vegetables.
This chart is the only one that I have found with this much information regarding omega 6 and 3 fatty acids, and their ratios---

Hi Gary, thank you for your kind comment. My vita mix is from the Ascent series. Model VM 0185A. I bought this model last year because it offers a food processor accessory. So I can use the base as a blender or for the food processor attachment which I bought separately.

I usually have a tablespoon each of chia and hemp seeds. I really like the texture of hemp seeds in my daily oatmeal. Do you not eat hempseeds? I going to start adding flax seeds. Thanks

Hi Suzanne! Flax and chia have a 3:1 ratio of omega 3 over 6. Hemp has a 1:3 ratio of 3 to 6. I do use a bit of hemp over my berries and plant yogurt🌻🥰🌻

Hi Linda, I primarily use this mix on my morning oats, but I will also use it if a recipe calls for ground flaxseed. mini vegan recipes will use ground flax as a binder, instead of egg. I simply use this mix instead of straight flax. It makes so much sense at any age to cut back on processed foods and animal products and load up On fruits and vegetables, grains and legumes, seeds and nuts. Good for you!🌻🥰🌻

It goes by several names, Black Gram, Mungo bean, and Urad dal. I found it by the third name at the Indian store and on Amazon. I use the whole for this recipe, not the split.
