A round that has already existed when the west was wild.
And still used today by the communists !
@@kerrymehaffey5181 It is the oldest military round still in use. Dating from 1891.
You proved they are almost identical when it comes to energy ft/pd, exactly what a ballistic chart shows for the 7.62x54R, .308 and 30-06 they are all very close. Great video thank you.
👍👍 thanks for watching!
I wouldn't lump a 30-06 in with a .308 or 7.62x54R power-wise, the 30-06 has roughly 20% more case capacity and chunks a heavier round at a higher velocity than the other two, there's a pretty decent difference in muzzle energy. But .308 and 54R _are_ damn near identical.
Yeah it turned out exactly the way I thought it would
You should redo this test but try actual steel core .308 and 7.62x54R bullets. Then see how much more damage is done to the cinder blocks. Awesome video!
762x54r is closer to a 30-06
Idk the 30-06 is a 762.63 vs 308 at 762.51. The mosin is 762.54
I was coming to mention just the Sam, the 308 is closer matched to the 762x31r.
7.62x39* miss typed sorry.
The 7.62x54r and .308 are very, very close to the same ballistics.
@@unclestubs8377 yes and the 06 is too..all three shoot a thirty Cal bullet about 2800 fps
Awesome video, love the comparison (btw, that Mosin is absolutely gorgeous). I have a Mosin M91/30, the barrel has been cut down to 16 1/4" (by previous owner), and it is like shooting a 12Ga with High Brass loads, an absolute beast.
Thanks for watching
Just went to the range and shot 40 rounds out of the mosin at 50 and 100 yards; pretty much spot on and very fun
This dude sounds like Hank Hill!!!
Dangit bobby!
Propane and propane accessories
I was thinking the same lol
The 54-R nice Man
Thanks Bud!
I enjoyed this. Realize it's an older video, but still I liked it. Most people would demand you talk about every little spec of the rounds and barrel length, and would be upset rather than actually enjoy a fun piece of work. Very satisfying what the .308 did. Did the same thing with my AK-47, you should compare 7.62x39 to a .308.
The .308 might be in a whole other ball park, but that doesn't mean the rounds can't be compared. Why the Hell not haha.
Noticed your subscribed number has hit 8k, congrats! I love to see the smaller channels gain subs. You present yourself honestly and sincerely as a regular guy who just loves the sport of shooting in your videos and people really like that. Most big channels don't even reply to viewer comments. You have a fun channel and I hope you continue to be successful with it.
Appreciate the kind words Bryan. I spend quite a bit of time every day responding to every single comment. It means a lot to me that people take the time to watch and especially comment. It is a pet peeve of mine when I comment and never hear back 😂 I will always respond unless it becomes physically impossible. thanks again!
to put it simply: explody brick = better energy transfer = more stopping power
Stopping power isn’t really a thing. Hydrostatic shock is, however. But again, it’s not stopping power, that term doesn’t even make sense.
@@ViktoriousDead it's the power from transfering the kinetic energy from the projectile into the target as the projectile is slowing down and deforming. :-)
19Koty96 aside from massive rounds, most short action and even Long actions rounds don’t have that kind of effect one people, to much mass. So “stopping power” doesn’t really equate. Bullets don’t stop people in their tracks and fling them backwards because of their force. The closest thing again, would be hydrostatic shock, the force and impact the bullets causes internally due to liquid inside you. That again isn’t any sort of stopping power, just internal damage.
@@ViktoriousDead ...not power of the projectile stoping you. The power from the projectile stopping/deforming inside you.
19Koty96 again, it doesn’t stop you. It’s gonna “splash” but even then still not enough impact to really stop a moving person in their tracks
Once again, you are the man! I love you as long as you are not shooting any more of my beer holding solo cups! Great video as always!
idk there are still a lot of requests out there for shots on the cups with more calibers! 😂 Thanks for watching! Always appreciate your comments
Just shot a Mosin a bit yesterday, about 20 rounds. Pretty impressive for such an old rifle. I'm more used to my 22lr Marlin and AR in 5.56. Its quite a difference. I've shot an AR 10 in 308 about as many times. The AR 10 recoiled more, but it is lighter and we were shooting the Mosin from a sled/rest. They were both fairy accurate, but the AR 10s sights were easier to adjust to the shooter, and I much prefer the aperature sights on the AR 10 to the open type ramp on the Mosin. That said, once adjusted, I'm sure it would be accurate. I do find it entertaining the Mosin sights are factory graduated to 2000 yards, but I have trouble hitting targets at 150 yards.😂
Technically it is around 2500 yards, since meters are slightly longer than yards :) but it is still funny that it has that option
At 100 yards I aim about 6 to 8 inches low. 6 with M39 ( heavier rifle), 8 with Mosin. If your not use to shooting milsurp with full power loads it might take a while to tame these guys.
I miss my old mosen . Love both of these calibers .
I am glad I found your channel. Subscribed, will be watching more. Thank you!
Hey thanks for watching! I really appreciate it. I have a new video EVERY DAY
I like the dog running in the background at 3:36 haha! Good vid
That is my little baby "sweet tea"! She is a great dog!
WHO_TEE_WHO nice! What kind of dog is she??
The Mosin really is a badass rifle. Nothing like it!
Love the mosin!
they make good boat anchors....
Mause 98
I personaly like mausers bettet
I have a mossin
I have some steel core surplus rounds for my mosin and those might go through more blocks. Just something to try if you find them!
Russian 7,62 54 is 15% more powerful.
It has larger case capacity.
It's more like 30 06 Springfield.
Thanks Frank
it's is been designed same time ;)
Khatuntcov Mikhail 7.62x54 was made in 1891. The 30 06 was made in 1906 or 1903,
As someone who owns a mosin but not a 308 I want to say that you are false, the 7.62x54r can push heavier bullets (208 gr) which I love but if you compare 147 gr to 147 gr out of the SAME BARREL LENGTH the 308 wins, you will get about 25-2,600 fps from the x54r out of a 20 inch barrel, the .308 will get about 2800 from a 20 inch barrel, and from a 28 inch barrel like I have on my mosin I'm sure the .308 would probably be at or close to 3,000 fps but x54r only gets about 2,800
@The Pizza Is Aggressive when the bullet weight is identical, muzzle velocity is actually the ONLY thing that determines energy. You clearly missed the part where I said both 147 grain bullets
I've seen a bunch of different 10 round mags 3d printed specifically to to the mosin instead of using the 5 rd stripper clips
Quick search in google immediately reveals:
"Data in the Speer manual was developed in a Ruger Model 77 Mark II bolt action. Start and maximum charges of 1680 for a 123-grain, 0.310-inch bullet are 26.0 grains and 28.0 grains respectively. Maximum velocity is 2,544 fps."
"Mosin-Nagant
3-line rifle M1891/Mosin-Nagant Action Bolt action Rate of fire Variable
Muzzle velocity Light ball, ~ 865 m/s (2,838 ft/s) rifle ~ 800 m/s (2,625 ft/s) carbine."
comparison of the cartridges from Wiki:
7.62×54mmR
Bullet mass/type Velocity Energy
11.3 g (174 gr) HPBT 797 m/s (2,610 ft/s) 3,593 J (2,650 ft⋅lbf)
11.7 g (181 gr) FMJ 786 m/s (2,580 ft/s) 3,614 J (2,666 ft⋅lbf)
11.7 g (181 gr) SP 800 m/s (2,600 ft/s) 3,744 J (2,761 ft⋅lbf)
9.7 g (150 gr) FMJ 865 m/s (2,840 ft/s) 3,629 J (2,677 ft⋅lbf)
11.7 g (181 gr) SP 805 m/s (2,640 ft/s) 3,779 J (2,787 ft⋅lbf)
0.308 Winchester:
Bullet mass/type Velocity Energy
125 gr (8 g) Spitzer 3,100 ft/s (940 m/s) 2,668 ft⋅lbf (3,617 J)
150 gr (10 g) Nosler tip 2,820 ft/s (860 m/s) 2,648 ft⋅lbf (3,590 J)
168 gr (11 g) BTHP 2,650 ft/s (810 m/s) 2,700 ft⋅lbf (3,700 J)
175 gr (11 g) BTHP 2,645 ft/s (806 m/s) 2,619 ft⋅lbf (3,551 J)
185 gr (12 g) Lapua Mega JSP 2,510 ft/s (770 m/s) 2,588 ft⋅lbf (3,509 J)
- so 7.62x54R is slightly more powerful, but not by much.
The main difference, that you actually fail to mention, is that R stands for Rimmed, while 0.308 is rimless - which is how you should be telling them apart. 7.62x54R is probably one of the last remaining rimmed cartridges, but is still doing pretty well being used by both GPMG's and sniper rifles.
Question pls. If you have a .308 bolt action rifle and ar10 .308 semi auto , do you recommend using. 308 on the bolt action and 752x51 nato on the Ar10 . I m asking because the ar10 is more of a compact weapon vs a hunting rifle
The muzzle velocity of each, would be nice to know!
If ya get some non-FMJ .308 they pound cinder blocks to tiny chunks quickly. I think with the variety of ammo and platforms available the 7.62X54 is a collectors piece.
I just bought a mosin! Can't wait to shoot it!
Thanks for the video, dude. I know you are meaning to do these tests very seriously, but man, you gotta go beyond 200 yards, preferably 300 or more to see how rifle bullets perform. Their differences become more obvious the further you shoot from. Just like with the .30-06 vs .308, one will really start to notice the difference at 300 yards or more. Bullet weight, shape and barrel specs are also of importance when it comes to the performance. And to verify the difference, one has to repeat the test many times.
Velocity seems the same. Some small difference with the 7.62R having a bit more kinetic energy retention (maybe due to the longer bullet?)
👍👍💥💥
I’d think barrel length. Muzzle velocity
I have a mosin, got it about 3 weeks ago for $325, all matching parts, came with bayonet and sling. Put about 20 rounds through it earlier today, destroyed my steel gong target! Unfortunately I only got interested in mosin nagants after they became more expensive. My dad told me (I am 14) that the gun shop we go to once had several crates full, each rifle going for about $70. I still love my mosin though, don't see why people call them garbage rods.
I bought my M44 ?20? years ago at Big 5. Got it on sale for $45 Lol. There used to be drums of them.

I get "our time" senior dating ads. I'm 36...
7.62 had more kinetic energy and as such does more damage.
They are both 7.62 LOL
I'm a sucker for any video with Mosin's in them!
Gotta love a mosin!!! Thanks for watching!!!
Tested a long range round at 20y.. (If this wasn't an old video) I'd love to see the same video but at longer distances, especially if seeing how both calibers work differently at various distances.
7.62x51 and 7.62x54. Love me some 30 caliber rounds. Keep it up brother.
Thanks Robert!
Awesome stuff as always. Mosins are sweet. I'd for sure love to have a Mosin in my life. Do a how many pieces of wood will the 7.62×54R will go thro. I'm curious to see how that will turn out
Thanks Gary! Hope you have a great day!
Thanks for the video. I’m waiting for my M1A to get here. In the mean time, I just pass the time watching RUclips!😎
Very nice
I wonder how much difference there would be if it was a m44 mosin. Would have almost the same length barrel as the 308
The 20 inch barrel on the M44/M39 would lose a couple hundred feet per second and do less damage, still might penetrate the same though with the steel bullet
For such an old rifle the Mosin is very accurate and shootable. I could hit clay skeet birds 104mm off hand at 210 yards with the Mosin. I was amazed. It shot better than the AR
Any bolt can out shoot ar
I just so happen to own both guns, nice vid!
Question. What grain bullet, velocity and barrel lengths? All of that will tell you if it’s apples to bananas test
Also was it steel core
Hey bro what were the length of the barrels for both rufles? That has a lot to do with the performance of both rounds!?!
22 inch barrel on ruger
28.7 in on mosin
Now that was awesome! Really enjoyed this video. Thumb's up!~John
👍👍
About five years ago the ballistic testing outfit called Brass Fetcher produced a video in which they shot various rounds into concrete blocks to see what would penetrate. Sheets of birch plywood behind the blocks would show any penetration. One thing to note that the blocks were sideways so there would be only two walls.
The video sort of drags a bit, but to summarize, the rounds that did not penetrate through to the plywood were 9mm, 45ACP, 5.56, 7.62x51, 300 WSM and 12 gauge buckshot. The only significant penetration was from a 7.62x51 armor piercing round, with the huge 338 Win Mag managing a small amount of penetration. I guess the lesson is that penetrating concrete blocks is a tough task for anything.
ruclips.net/video/ih3nw4qVa1I/видео.html
Thanks!
So do you think the 7.62x54r dumps its energy quicker while the .308 has better penetration? I'd be interested to see a damage comparison on a soft target.
🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️
I used to have 2 mosin nagant both in carbine. Had a scope drilled and taped and mounted a scope on it had to order a bent bolt handle for it and had a gunsmith put the bent bolt handle on it
Can i use 76.2 54r in a .308 bolt action rifle? I have a Tikka t3x Tac a1 in .308.
308 is really rare this days but i can get some 54r
No you cannot do that
I Did 308 vs 54R tests for an entire summer, hundreds of tests.... Not one test, steel of every kind, wood, brick, soft targets ect did the 308 outperform the 54R... The 54R is a juggernaut and never lost on destructive power to the 308... BUT... In saying that, When I matched the 30-06 against the 54R, the results were identical to 308 vs 54R being that the 54R was now in place of the 308 in power compared to the 30-06... The 30-06 had slightly more horse power than the 54R but it was in the ball park ... As far as accuracy goes, I have no idea as my shots were at max 100 yards... This was a purely destructive test on hard and soft objects...
Cool video as always WT.
Thanks Sonny!
What were those barrel lengths??
Both are lead core bullets. With a steal core they both still perform about the same. I've unfortunately been shot at by both more times than I care to remember. That block wall you're using for cover tends to disappear quickly.
Thanks devildog

7.62 X 54R, and 7.62 X 25 Tok terrific rounds..... Would love to have break-action 7.62 X 54R single-shot rifle. Reloading fired brass, converting to boxer large rifle primer enjoyable challenge.
I love comparison vids, but I feel the 308 was denied, due to the shorter Ruger barrel.
I have nothing against the 7.62 x 54 R Mosin Nagant but I am pleasantly surprise by the .308. Thanks for the eye opener.
Thanks for watching Rich!
Give Matt from demolition ranch back his mosin nagant ,great vids
Matt who?
you should've used an m44 mosin not the long one to make the comparison better. Barrel length plays a big role
👍👍 thanks for watching
Actually They did about what I figured. I enjoy watching your Show it’s interesting, You do some test that A lot of people don’t think of keep it up buddy 👍
Thanks for watching Jay!
Nice testing as dig it...Good stuff....
Thanks Scott!
Imagine trying to hide behind a wall and the one who is chasing you has one of those...
😳😳😳
Especially when the blocks are typically sideways in a wall. Aka only two layers of block vs three.
At least the chaser wouldn't know where to aim his rifle.
More Mosin! Happy Friday!
Hey Derek! Happy Friday!
Another great vid. Thanks!!!
Thanks Brian!
the 54r looks a lot like my 3040 Krag. How close are they ballistics?
No idea
Well that shows why the 7.62x54R has been around so long. When it hits something it dose a LOT of damage! Which is what most if not all Military's want these days ,so..... great video though! I am looking to get a rifle in 7.62x54R so this helps!
Good video as always
Hey thanks! Appreciate that
What about the surplus steel core 54xr ammo everyone has cases of? You skipped the good stuff IMHO.
Who Tee Who.... I just reviewed this video. I don't think there was that much of a difference between the 2 rds. I am wondering if the POI was the factor??
oh hard to say
what ammunition does fit in 22 caliber rifle? like can 22 lr be there?
There are many different 22 caliber rifles
Too bad ya didn't have (chech) hardend steel core rounds for that Mossen. They were made to penetrate armored vehicles. I was greatly surprised at it's accuracy. Especially @ intermediate range, 300-600 yrds. Thanks pard, i love these vids.
How about a paper plate test between a 12 gauge and 4570
Thanks Michael just picked up amore plates today
Poor puppy. "Did you see me dodge that bullet" great video as always.

So similar to the .308 v 30-06 :) Cool stuff!
Thanks Ken!
Another awesome video!
Thanks for watching! Appreciate the kind words
Beautiful Mosin!
Excellent Video: Quick and to the point. Surprising result. Thank you!
Thanks for watching Ben!
For a cartridge that's 140 years old in design you can't beat a mosin! I want me a PSL
I’m glad I’ve had a mosin for years.
a tie ok now you just started something : ) but seriously interesting video !
USA) 7,62 x 54R lőszer is.(?)
At this point what difference does it make.
Thank You.
What were the bullet's masses? The Mosin had more KE because of the longer barrel but that doesn't necessarily mean it was going faster than the .308.
Also even if the bullets had the same energy, the heavier bullet will have more momentum.
@@Chevsilverado No. momentum is mass*velocity. What heavier, slower bullets have is a greater impulse, which is avg force*elapsed time. Given that they have the same average force over time (which is the same as work done, which is the same as muzzle energy since the bullet starts at rest), the impulse will be greater because the time frame of the impact on both the shooter (recoil impulse) and target are greater.
@@Chris_FMS_Redfield Because KE is to the square of velocity and momentum is linear you can have a mismatch in magnitude of KE vs Momentum between two different objects travelling at different speeds with different mass. In this case the heavier, slower bullet will have higher momentum than the lighter fast bullet if both have the same KE. If you do the algebra on this you will see it is true.
It is the same reason why a slow heavy bullet will retain its velocity much more than a light fast bullet.
@@Chevsilverado My bad you're right. That's what happens when you make a claim without doing the math. The impulse part of what I said is right though.
Can you get a 7:62 Ruger mini 14? Sorry about the reply earlier!
Hmmm not sure if mini 14 comes in 7.62
What model its the ruger American and how many inches long is the barrel I’m trying to buy a ruger
22 inch. Ruger american classic
Thanks buddy I’m always watching your videos
Thanks for watching!
I didn't know the Mosin Nagant was chambered in 308!
And what was really surprising was seeing a Ruger American in 7.62x54R!
I never realized how similar the 308 and 7.62x54R were. Anyway great video man! Always love watching your videos
What? No no no! American Ruger in "308" vs. Mosin Nagant M91/30 in 54R. Both are 7.62 but the American was 51 and the Mosin was 54R.
I believe we did that comparison in another video
Bass akwards.
Again unfair shorter barrel for 308 also what weight of bullet for each
Thanks for showing the guns.
🖒🖒 thanks for watching!
Ive only got pre 1899s, but my chileno m95 is 7.62x51, ive also got 8mm mauser, and 7.62x54R.... i guess im all set for shtf.

Rip Doggo's ears
Ahhh I was wondering if anyone would see my little puppy dog. My wife had her out going potty
Honestly, rip anyone's ears if you use the carbine version
Not all cinder blocks are created equal for various reasons even in the same batch. That's the reason PSI crush tests require numerous breaks for comparison as it should with a bullet comparison
Not sure how I missed this video- I love the Mosin Nagant even though people call it the garbage rod.
i need to get the mosin out
Good test!
Thanks for watching Thomas!
for me i like the 7.62x54R because i like how powerful it is and my dad also has mosin nagant.Edit:thanks for hearting my comment :)

I agree Sir, a tie on both of the great rounds you tested. I can't help wondering how the 30.06 would fare here if tested?
Of course i had to stop the video ,before you fired the Merican 308! LOL I think its going ot at least do damage to the forth wall although it could go all the way! LOL Keeping fingers crossed our round dose better! hehehe
Im not a expert but i think u need to make the test again because looks like the bullet went under the 2nd block because on the video looks like ( polvo ) pass all the way to 2 wall on the 2nd bock
I think 223 but have not been around many 300bkouts
Which is cheaper? 7.62 Russian or 30-06?
7.62
I'd like to see the comparison between these rounds fired through barrels of equal length.
