I section hike on the AT and I have never had a blister. I use Darn Tough Socks. I'm in the Milwaukee area. Thanks for the video. I've been looking for a quilt and have been eyeing the Zpacks one, but I think I may move on.
Just got the 30 degree version of this bag and it's awesome. The fabric is very light but I think it's fine at keeping in down. Also being so light really allows the down to push it up and fully loft easily. Sometimes with heavyweight fabrics, the stiffness and weight of the fabric can suppress the down a little and prevent it from achieving the maximum loft and hence insulation for the given baffle geometry.
$430 for a sleeping bag with stitching that comes out after one night? Ouch! What would it be like after two weeks of a section hike? Not for me, couldn't risk it. Sorry. Good video though.
Welcome to Utah. Hope you liked it. Can't wait to see if you post a video of your trip. I'm headed to Canyonlands tomorrow. Thanks for the insight on flight travel with backpacking gear.
I totally agree with your opinion of their quality. There customer service kinda sucks too. I bought a backpack from them recently and it's the most uncomfortable bag I have ever owned. Enough ranting! Love your videos. Keep um coming!!
I honestly am not super interested in this particular bag. But it's Dan Becker, so....it's interesting! Can't believe how long I took to start watching this channel! You're the best, Dan!
We both put up sleeping bag reviews at the same time!! This one looks amazing. And you get to play with it in the snow too. Thanks for YET ANOTHER HREAT REVIEW!!
Got the ZPacks Classic Full Zip 20 degree bag in black so the black stitching is not an issue. I bought for the weight/warmth ratio. The ability to quilt it was not that important however it was important to move away from quilts. I became tired of settling up the quilt; straps and then the drafts. With the ZPacks bag I generally leave it zipped up and slip into it; surrounded by the bag; much better than a quilt- for me.
There are a few different methods, the duffel bag is a good one if you have a place to store it during your hike. If you don't, you can put your pack in a cardboard box or a clear plastic bag. I have used both of these methods, but I prefer the clear plastic bag because it's lighter, less bulky and it can go in the pack when not in use. It can double as a pack liner or pack cover depending on how you use it. The cardboard box has the advantage of providing more protection, I use the box method when flying internationally.
Dan, I know you like UGQ. What are the details of the options you picked while making yours? Materials, overstuffing in bag/box, taper, draft collar, and tension control? Any information would be appreciated.
Nice idea to promote versatility between a bag and quilt and usually I'm all about versatility, but from the placement of that zipper, I'd agree, doesn't really look like something worth having in a real life application. One of these days I'll just cough up the money for a real nice UL quilt with pad straps since I hardly ever use the hood on my sleeping bag anymore and recently got an AegisMax down balaclava off of ebay for $20 that appears to be real nice (I've yet to use it).
Hello from Ireland !! I have a question :). Do you think you would be able to include Eu links for your gear ? I have seen some guys putting Eu and Us links
How did you travel with your stove? Everything I've read says "don't fly with a canister." But I really, really doubt the TSA is going to find it if I should happen to "forget" that it's in there. Form what I've read, I think most people just buy one on their way from the airport. The trouble with that though is the extra time it takes to find an REI on a short trip. Also, when you're done, you have a barely used canister to dispose of. I don't want to take time to burn it off, and I don't want to through it in the trash either. Thoughts? It seems the best alternative is an alcohol stove, which is unfortunate.
TSA has these things called xray machines. There’s a pretty good chance they will notice something metal that can be used to make a bomb. Even if you got it through in your checked luggage, canisters can leak in the non-pressure controlled luggage hold. You might well ruin everything in your pack. If they find it, the quality time you get to spend talking to police and missing your flight will probably outweigh the time it would have taken to find an REI at your destination.
Can't do any sock with a compression ring around it. I always develop pain where that ring is. I have been using Cloudline lately and I have really taken to them. You might want to give them a try.
Only the Solo Quilts from Zpacks have a pad attachment system. Some companies don't offer them at all, some use a generic strap, some a proprietary system of their own. It's really not entirely necessary to be honest. After all, a sleeping bag/quilt is basically just a glorified blanket and at home you don't use straps to hold down your comforter. It's easy enough to tuck or wrap the edges and you're warm and toasty all night. If you're a very active sleeper though, a zipper might be your best bet.
Recorded something like this about flights a few weeks ago but havent dropped it yet. Basically same advice nice! Glad it worked for you! Gonna try those socks too. :)
Im kinda the same way with sleeping bags! I've been using the sea to summit micro 2 sleeping bag as my 3 season bag. Its kind of a hybrid. Full length zipper with a drawstring hood so it can flatten out and it has a drawstring footbox. Which i like cause i can vent my feet. Its 850 fill ultra dry treated european goose down. Thats a mouthful lol it is ethically sourced aswell. Great bag! You can use it like a blanket or a mummy bag. Kinda wish i got the micro 3 because it had a warmer temp rating cause the micro 2 is only a 36 degree. But it works for now and only weight a 1lb 7oz in the long version. I may upgrade to a zpacks like yours or a UGQ of sorts. Not sure which version maybe the bandit or i want to see if they would do what you have here and make it 3/4 length zipper and sealed foot box. Good stuff Dan. Would like to see an updated review at some point maybe a year or two down the road. Curious to see how durable they are. Stay safe! Hike on!
I have both the Zpacks classic long and Enlightened Equipment Revelation both 20 degree .. The Revelation seems to be more more versatile and warmer as a true quilt and opens up flat. Just use bungies around the pad to hold it down.. just synch the toe box. Works great! Great video Dan!
G Henrickson i would but it doesn’t stay in place for me.. i turn alot at night .. the constant tucking it in around you or fixing the zipper isn’t efficient and annoying in the middle of the night.. so i lay down my Nero sleeping pad then my thermorest neoair on top of that .. then take a loose old bungie and wrap my quilt to the bottom.. works just enough to let a little air in but keep it in place. Works perfect for me every time
I have the EE Revelation. I put my pad inside and cinch the elastic straps that the Revelation comes with. Works great; plenty of room, no drafts, and it reduces heat bleed from the pad.
Yep, I have both of those as well and pretty much use the EE Revelation most of the time. Have had both out in sub freezing nights. The zpacks is warmer, but I flip around many times during the night and like the room of the Revelation even if that does lead to cold air leaks. Besides, if it gets real cold, my dog will actually snuggle up for warmth rather than just sleep on a pad. If it got really cold could probably use the EE over the zpacks with a xtherm and get down to zero or so comfortably. Haven't tried that yet.
Great review How do you compare to ugq or Western Mountaineering it seems like some of zpacks is larger items. Have been having issues. Anyway, thanks for pointing out. Stuff like the stitching that would drive me bananas.
And, they said, go be FREE and hike. Get out into nature and enjoy the, just you and nature time. It was a trick to get us hooked so we would spend money. 👓😎 Good to hear about this queeping bag. A bit disappointing on the stitching comments. You aren't the first one I've heard comment on that so it has to be more than a one-off.
I work remote jobs, and email the companies directly and ask for guide discounts, Zen Bivy let me stack my discount with it's sale giving me a super cheap price.
Great review on that bag. Your the man. I am heading out to Coyote gulch on Saturday morning and was wondering how long did it take to warm up in the mornings. How did you layer up for the desert cold?
I made my own down top quilt with 7 denier nylon and it's lasted the last 4 years very well. I've had it slip onto rocks and dirt in my sleep and it hasn't torn yet. You get an occasional feather or two poke through per trip, but the loft-for-weight has been great. My biggest regret is that I spent so much time making it myself that I should have picked up an overtime shift and paid for a commercial one and saved me time. Thanks for the review!
You didn't know how they got there ? Really 😂. In my opinion if they perfect the design & material, it could be the perfect sleeping/Quilt in it's category.
I love the neck cinch being in the middle on my EE quilt. The excess cordage is inside the quilt away from my face and where I can adjust without putting my hands/arms in the cold. Great review, as always nicely balanced and informative. Plus the promise of blister free hikes, amazing!
resonably priced? Isn't it like 350 dollars? I get it..it's a good bag..I love your channel.. but that is not reasonable. :) I'll stick with my TNF dolomite which can double as a quilt.. sure it is 2.4 lbs... but I love it lol
New sub, great videos man. I’m in Houston, Tx. No snow for me big guy, but I still enjoy the info. About to go on my first backpacking trip next month. Lone Star Hiking Trail. I plan on doing 35 miles over the weekend. I’m taking my dog so I won’t be alone. Do some warm weather videos for us down South.
We have flown a crew to Albuquerque multiple times to hike Philmont, and the outer duffle has always worked well for us. And you can put your boots in there (I 100% wear mine, as I'm paranoid), and there are many options in the $20-$35 range on Amazon. I had hoped someone in my crews would get a $5 Ikea bag like www.ikea.com/us/en/p/frakta-storage-bag-for-cart-blue-90149148/ , but, alas, nobody went for it.
Great video, Dan. I'm waiting on the black to get back in stock so I can order the full zip (I need the draft tube)--how tall are you that a long seemed appropriate?
I would think the only real thing you may have trouble checking would be stove fuel. Definitely a good idea with the duffle though. I’ve been eyeballing a ZPacks sleeping bag like a 20-30 degree. I have a 10 degree UGQ and a 50 degree Enlightened equipment APEX. Looking at options in that middle area.
Consider a warbonnet diamondback. I have 4 quilts from various cottage makers. The warbonnet is conservatively rated and very well made. ZERO down shift because it comes overstuffed to begin with. I have never had a 20 degree quilt go to 10 degrees before. This is my go to quilt every time.
Just bought a 10 degree full zip! A few other things from Zpacks too! Lol you helped influence that! Can’t wait to get all my new stuff and get out on the trail!

Is it me or was this review a little uninspired like some of your other reviews? Like it's not a bad bag, but for the money and some of the quality of the stitching, compared to other manufacturers, make it hard to recommend for most? I also thought that maybe this was a bag you've had awhile and just never did a review, but is this a new one for you?

You could call it a « Quilting bag » 🙃😄
For that loosened stitch, dab a single drop of white glue with a toothpick where the thread enters the fabric.
Great tip!
Just bought the socks (Zeropes). I have a hike coming up next weekend and can't wait to try them with my new Altra Trail Runners!

7d for inside wouldn’t bother me but I prefer 10d for outside. It doesn’t breath as much as 7 so I think keeps more heat in and better durability.

Sir please do a review of the Zenbivy light bed.
If I'm gonna drop money on anything I want it to be a little more durable. It has to function properly and have the ability to last.
The Zenbivy sleep system is what you need then. It's durable to be my comforter at home with no feathers poking out.
