An Impoverished Liturgical Rite

  • The richness, the grandeur, the complexities of the prayers, the gestures, the movements of the Traditional Latin Mass far surpasses that of the Novus Ordo Missae which purposely sought to make the liturgy supposedly more accessible to modern men who appreciated, we were told, a more down to earth, pedestrian experience at Holy Mass. And this jettisoning of our liturgical inheritance…which is something of priceless worth…the loss of our very patrimony as Latin Rite Catholics…was done, we were told, for the sake of man…for the sake of the apostolate…for the sake of filling up the churches with countless modern people. Well…how did the liturgical experiment work? Judging from the number of church closings over the last few decades…it didn’t work that well.

My daughter and I started attending TLM mass one year ago. Recently we had to attend the anniversary mass for my grandmother at a NO parish. We didn’t receive the Eucharist and straight afterwards we attended a TLM mass. So we attended both a NO and TLM mass in one day. The difference in reverence and worship was extraordinary. It’s totally impossible to compare them, they are two separate rites. For those who want to defend the NO rite - look into how the NO mass was created by Fr Bugnini and six Protestant ministers. I thank God with all my heart … the graces we have received since we started going to TLM … uncountable. Attending TLM mass has challenged our lukewarm response to our faith (lex orandi lex credendi). NO mass is man-centred. TLM mass is God-centred. I wish everyone many blessings in their faith journey. Praise be to the Sacred Heart of Jesus!

@@kittyblaine7917 Hello Kitty. I am beyond grateful to God. I attended NO mass for almost 50 years of my life and it was only due to hearing Fr Chad Ripperger on Dr Taylor Marshall’s channel (he was talking about the differences in graces received) that I started to go. Some days it takes from 45 mins to an hour one way - but it’s worth it. I understand that it’s not possible for some people to attend and hope and pray that a TLM mass will come to a parish near you. We also attend the local SSPX chapel (which has a TLM) and have received many graces and blessings there. Blessings and love from Australia (the country that believes that locking down its citizens is a national sport).

I and my children have been going to the TLM exclusively now for almost a year and the two times I have been back to the NO since then - one time to fulfill my first Friday obligation and the other time for a funeral - have been excruciating: I couldn't believe that that I had attended that mass regularly for years in silent suffering, thinking that the TLM was inaccessible (ironically, "Traditionis Custodes" pushed me over the edge!).
Compared to the TLM, the NO mass appears shabby and dated, like a room in a cheap motel that hasn't be renovated since 1973. And both times the sermons were either banal or cloying (with the priest wandering through the pews trying too hard to be "engaging"). Yes, I admit that assisting at the NO mass for some years after reverting to the Catholic faith on my part did bear some spiritual fruit, but since assisting at the TLM, I've experienced immeasurably more spiritual fruits in a much shorter amount of time.

This is so VERY helpful. I came into the Catholic Church in the mid 1980s (from a Baptist sect) and it was a novus ordo. I used to dispute with my SSPX Grandma that the novus was just as good as the TLM (which I didn't understand of course). I tried doing research on the issues, but particularly focusing on the SSPX. Anyhow, I began noticing that the words to the music at the novus had been changing, and that was very concerning. A couple of years after Grandma passed at age 90, out of the blue, I just KNEW I had to veil and so began that. A couple of years after that, I just KNEW that Christ is a King so Holy that I MUST kneel when receiving Him, and on my tongue. In both instances, the veiling and kneeling, I was so afraid that Father would think I was doing them just to get attention. I was literally trembling when I approached Communion and mustered the courage to kneel.
RUclips videos such as Dr. Taylor Marshall helped me see more what had happened to make the novus. As well, he mentioned that Cardinal Bernardin had deceptively rammed through Communion on the hand. Lastly, someone recommended that I read the details of Marie-Julie Jahenny's visions (all approved by her Bishop). In one, around 1910, Jesus told her "THEY ARE WORKING ON A NEW MASS---WHICH HAS WORDS ODIOUS TO ME." Since then I have wondered WHICH WORDS❓❓❓❓

@@MrMercuryW they have free will. It is not up to us to correct them, they can see the outfits around them. When I first went to the TLM, I was wearing fitting shift dresses that had hemlines at the knee. When I saw the ladies around me (that was when our TLM community was still small), I thought, "I'm dressed like a harlot." I changed my way of dressing. My hemlines dropped, I learned to wear cardigans and scarves (even in hot weather, I will wear a cardigan. It's hot? Then let it be penance. It is my prerogative). So I will not correct or judge them. They can follow the example without being told. It is just up to them. (Another example. I was not into keeping a clean house until my son bought his house and moved me in with him. It was because of his example that I learned to be more into keeping a nice, clean home.) But I also caution trads against judging those who go to the New Mass. There are many good people there as well. And Jesus is still there. The Mass is offensive to Him? Then it is our duty to console Him and weep with Him, to keep praying for the change. And some prayers have been answered. In our Cathedral, Gregorian Chant is now incorporated into the Liturgy, so there is also Latin in it. Not to mention the priests are now behind the rails so that those who want to receive reverently on the tongue while kneeling can do so. Other NO Churches here provide kneelers for the Eucharist. Yes, prayer, fasting and patience - instead of bashing - can effect good things.

    • @MrMercuryW
      @MrMercuryW 2 года назад +5

@@mariatolentino4516 Of course, yet, one of the works of mercy is to admonish the sinner also translated as correcting the one who errs, so I wouldn't dismiss correcting others just because they have "free will".
While indeed, it is not our "obligation" to correct people who aren't under our authority, St. Thomas says. It is our duty with the Lord and our respect for the liturgy to correct those who err on this particular matter, if we have the opportunity and we can do so with charity.
Do not forget that Cain said to God "Am I my brother's keeper?" that's there because we are the keepers of our brothers and sisters' souls, even if they aren't our children or subordinates. As I've heard on sermons here on Fraternal Correction, many Catholic articles also correlate this verse with fraternal correction.
Many Trads are proud and bash people as you say, it's true. But that's why I said that the corrections should be with charity.
Without charity, without love, is better to not correct other people. Lets one give bad example and worse of all offend God.
Only those Traditionalists which are humble and loving should correct others.
Likewise, I have seen everything in the NO parishes and even at times someone dressing inappropriately in the TLM, but is less common.
To some people going to Mass is the same as going to the beach, women with their revealing or torn outfits and men dressed like slobs.

Encouraged by a fellow Catholic for this past Lent challenge, I attended our diocesan TLM in Portland, ME. It was my first one and I plan on attending more. I loved the reverence and receiving at the altar rail. The priest's homily was excellent! He delivered it with passion and did not dance around some tough points. He did make a point that I continue to keep in my heart. He emphasized that when we get to heaven Christ is NOT going to ask us which Liturgical RITE we attended. He's going to evaluate HOW we LOVED. Attending the TLM helped me to appreciate both Masses, but more importantly, it emphasized that I need to FOCUS on the Corporal works and HOW I LOVE my fellow neighbor than anything else. ❤️🔥⚜️

God said to St. Catherine of Sienna about Priests, and the ornamentation of a Church, "They humble my house but their own dwelling places they lavishly furnish". Vatican ll called for a Church to be furnished with, "Noble Simplicity" (Whatever that means?). Now the Churchmen offer to God ugly houses with ugly furnishings. Theirs is the sacrifice of Cain, rejected by God.

Among the incidents recalled by Fr. Bouyer in his memoirs is the composition of Eucharistic Prayer II.
“It was Bouyer who had to fix in extremis a horrible formula of the new Second Eucharistic Prayer, from which Bugnini wished to expunge even the ‘Sanctus’,” Magister wrote. “And one evening, on the table of a trattoria in Trastevere, he had to rewrite the next of the new canon which is read today at Mass, together with the Benedictine liturgist Bernard Botte, with the added worry of having to deliver the whole thing by the following morning.”

I attend an Extraordinary Form during the week, and a Novus Ordo on the weekend (Saturday Vigil). I love the EF, and the NO is offered in the same spirit of sacredness that the Father in the video is speaking to. So, lucky for me that I have access to the best of both. Having said that, I agree with much that was said here and it's incredibly unfortunate that so many NO masses are open to abuse, pedantry and bad taste. I recently went to a different parish church near my office so I could pray; walked in, there were no candles, no lingering scent of incense, and a drum set with microphones set up with an electronic keyboard next to the altar. I immediately left.

The Roman Rite (Novus Ordo) is hardly impoverished. I'm not saying there aren't liturgical abuses and that the Roman Rite probably should be more organically similar in some ways to the Latin Rite as it unfolded through time. I had a vision of something long gone, and when i saw the sanctuary of the church I approached for instruction, , I could not tell it from a baptist church..plain, bare, no organ, just a bandstand with drums. bare stark walls. Now I have been reading and watching Sensus Fideliuus and other presentations about the loss of the latin mass.?? .not just english translated from latin, but totally made up prayers?? I have been weeping for days, wondering how I could find a traditional llatin mass church before I commit to this local one. that is located in a very affluent area, and in a very large, expensive building, but bare and plain inside. I don’t want the “nervous order” I want the real thing. • @MrMercuryW
      @MrMercuryW 2 года назад +1

@@prarieborn6458 It's the Novus Ordo Missae, Novus Ordo in short.
Translated in English as New Order [of the] Mass.
The Order of the Mass, whether Novus Ordo (Missal of St. Paul VI) or Latin Mass (Missal of Saint Pius V) is generally known as the Order in which the prayers and readings are said each day.
It constitutes the Ordinary (Prayers and readings which are constant) and Propers (Those which vary each day).
Now, this Novus Ordo Missae, is largely a fabrication from men in both propers and prayers. But it at least contains enough phrases of the prayer which St. Peter himself composed in order to have a valid Eucharistic consecration.
All the rituals of the Church in both Eastern and Western Catholicism can trace back their roots and Eucharistic Prayers to one of the Apostles, who as we know, were inspired by the Holy Spirit so that their prayers would be valid.
In Pentecost the Apostles received it in an special mystical way so that whatever they taught on matters of Faith and Morals would be without error.
And the Saints helped compose some of the other prayers and added the propers across the centuries, which after being accepted worldwide by the Church became valid also through the Holy Spirit working in unison with all the Bishops of the Church. These ancient rituals remained largely unchanged until this day.
Do not be discouraged, ultimately in your suffering and proper use of the Sacraments you might just be sustained with enough grace to persevere to the end.
It might be easier on the TLM if you can find one near your area, but be careful, ask the Holy Spirit for Humility and Fortitude.
And also read the Catechism of Trent and the Canons of the Council of Trent in regards to Sacraments and Justification.
But of course the new Catechism the CCC, contains many examples of moral theology that weren't developed in Trent such as things that are not allowed to be said on this platform, and what you mentioned about the New... and the New...
Just in case the US Novus ordo seclorum, means New Order of the Ages... And we know that such country was founded by enemies of the Church, and I don't mean the Protestants. But those same enemies supposedly influenced the Novus Ordo Missae.
      Praying for you

I go to the TLM once a week with my son who is on the autism spectrum. I go to mass in my Ordinary Form Parish on Sundays. I have seen more liturgical abuses at the TLM than in my parish. An example: the feast of St. Joseph - the choir saying the credo and took so long doing it the priest read the scripture readings and the Gospel while they were singing. And he did not read them in English afterwards. I find the lack of a homily disturbing, whereas I get fed spiritually by the homilies at my OF Church. No-one in the TLM parish seems to know where they are during the liturgy so most say a private devotion. .. the rosary. I’m not sure Our Lady would value the rosary above the Eucharist. The TLM seems impoverished spiritually. One thing I do appreciate is the many opportunities for confession, however, my own parish runs confession before each mass.

We go to the Mass not for the "feels" and being fed. There are 4 parts. 1. To adore thee.2. To thank thee.3. To appease they justice.4. To implore grace and mercy for ones self and those you are bound to pray.
When we start looking where one can be spiritually fed, we start having the mind set of a Protestant.
We don't go to the Mass for a rip roaring good sermon. Or the priest being light hearted, or giving us chills. No. In fact he could have the most boring sermon and that's fine . We go for the Eucharist. We go for Christ.
In what you have explained at the TLM does not sound like liturgical abuse. In fact in the TLM in the pamphlet if you follow it, it describes the choir chanting/ singing certain places of the Mass while the priest prays . He does secret prayers too. Remember he is there on our behalf.
It is hard for Novus Ordo babies ( I'm one too) to come from that kind of style of Mass to TLM. Because you actually get more freedom in the TLM . It is perfectly acceptable, appropriate, and not an abuse to pray the rosary during Mass, scripture ,or yes follow along.
My husband and It's first experience to be honest was awesome but overwhelming. I had tears in my eyes but at the same time was frustrated. Because I was use to following along with the priest and the people. But see sadly that's many people. We are so frustrated we don't want to stop and see just why TLM is so important and correct.
Yes it does require reading about it. There are pamphlets you can follow. We have books too. But here's the list beautiful part of our Lord, while yes it would be good to know that , you don't have to know it perfectly. You can sit there and witness the beauty and the amazing gift of Christ coming to us in the Eucharist.
This Ancient Mass worked for thousands of years. And now it has been attacked big time. But Holy Mother Church will not perish.
Liturgical abuse means something very different. Especially when I have visited a Novus Ordo. It's talking and dancing info front the the Blessed Sacrament. The Tabernacle no longer in the center of the alter as it should be. It's people talking and no sacred silence. It's immodest dress. It's priests cracking jokes and coming down from the pulpit and acting like it's comedy hour. It's acting like a Protestant service . Women acting like the priest, the Communion in hand. It's so sad. And parents allowing.... ALLOWING...their kids to crawl on the alter and play on it after Mass. It drove me nuts at my last parish.
I go to a TLM parish . 5yrs now. And while yes the Novus Ordo is valid, I shutter to think I may have to one day go there. I would grateful to receive our precious Lord , but it's abuse I see.
Our parish is growing so quickly and in droves that we are now averaging 2'000 people just on Sundays. And it's still growing. On top of that it's mostly young people . Young families. We have had to get rid of our cafeteria and make it a place for over flow. We have had to use the parking lot now and make a new building for more room. It's beautiful to see. And yet I hear at my old parish people are leaving , confused , no longer care about the Mass or gosh ...I'll just watch it on TV kinda attitude. That's the same right? I hate to hear that. If you notice too so many Novus Ordos are still masking and separating people. TLMs are not. Our priest haven't and won't mask. Praise God!
I hope I don't come off as attacking. I do understand the frustration of switching . Especially with something you have known all your life. I was a Novus Ordo for the first 35 years of my life. I'm so excited that I'm actually better able to follow along. And while I don't know everything, in a way I do know what's going on. It is sacred and it is right.
Please get some books on the TLM and the history of it. It will help.
And lastly while yes we are Ina way divided, Christ's church will NOT perish. We are one body in Christ. Stay the course folks, pray the rosary, use the sacraments. And if you cannot attend a TLM please don't stop going to Mass. Christ is still there in the Eucharist.
      Viva Cristo Rey!!

I have had the completely opposite experience with the priests of the SSPX. They are kind and on this specific point acknowledged that “Holy Spirit” is appropriate at times. It involves Latin vs. Germanic translation. Their theological formation is so far superior to that of the diocesan priests and you need only compare homilies once or twice to understand this. They use the 1962 Missal, and to prevent confusion, use the translations of the Latin verbiage of Holy Mother Church at that time. It would be preferable for all to learn the Latin and disregard differences in English translations.

    • @MrMercuryW

They say Holy Ghost, because it's an adequate name, as it is for a person of the Trinity. While "Spirit" would appear to some in the English language as something like an energy, or a feeling or state of mind. Many non-Catholic "Christian" sects claim the Holy Spirit to be an energy or simply another word to refer to God's special blessings or other uncountable heresies.
In earlier centuries the word ghost was used for a spirit of any kind, that is an spiritual entity with a will. But as the century passed that meaning for the word ghost was lost and it became be exclusively one of a dead person.

      Am I misunderstanding you?
Since when has "...excessive piety "been wrong?
Many renditions of the O.N. Mass have been completely stripped of piety.
      That is the problem

@@alhilford2345 yes, excessive piety can be unnecessary. Look at Christ for reference. How the Jewish customs allowed for over 600 laws or rules. He further stated that there were only 10 commandments. Looking like your fasting when you should not...praying in a private space not for show, orJewish leaders that wear long tassels looking for praise and so forth. I can probably go on for hrs. finding of more examples of overdoing piety

I thought we were supposed to do what Jesus did. At the Last Supper. In a small quiet simple rented place. And then go out and be priests of the word to others as temples of His Spirit. In the way His Spirit leads us. Different every day, if we truly listen.

That might work if the Mass was just a meal, as non-Catholics believe, but the Mass is a SACRIFICE, and the altar is CALVARY!
There's nothing else like it anywhere on earth.

The claim that Saint Peter himself composed the Roman Canon is simply not borne out by any evidence. I love the Roman Canon, and its antiquity is not in doubt. But you can't argue for something by obscuring the truth.
The history of the liturgy is quite complicated, and it helps nobody to pretend the Liturgy has remained static and unchanging for over 1500 years. Sure, growth was much slower and organic, which can be partially ascribed to lack of technology and the slow process of producing manuscripts. But the Liturgy has always changed and continues to change. The real concern is remaining faithful to the truth of the Gospel, while sacramentalizing Christ's offering in the Holy Mass as a foretaste of the heavenly liturgy which is taking place even now.
The TLM needed to be reformed, which is why the Liturgical movement was underway nearly 100 years prior to the 2nd Vatican council. You can argue some of the outcomes were less than ideal to straight up terrible and I'd agree. But pinning it all on the liturgy is foolish, at best. Just remember the complete societal upheaval of the times, and how dramatically it affected everyone, not just Catholics. So anyone suggesting that the TLM is perfect as is needs to remember that the TLM is all we had, and ultimately what led to the NO. It's less about finding the perfect 'form' of our prayer than it is about conforming our hearts to Christ in and through that form of prayer.

There are more Catholics in Africa today than there were in the total world in 1960. I have gone to Vietnamese Masses in America which are NO; and they are jam packed to the rafters. There are other countries like that too, Latin America, Hispanics in the US too, where the Church is packed again. TLM in the overall scene, is an extremely small minority. Trads often seem to be the Jack Chicks of the Catholic world, self-centered, self-love, narcissistic, casting suspicions on others. Who you are talking about is actually a very small group of people. Catholics are not just white males and women and I'm in that group. Poland too, sees great crowds at church. Maybe look around a bit. I've dismissed this as rebellious, good luck implementing the Latin Mass in the Philippines, India and so on. Love God with all one's heart, love your neighbor as you love yourself. Matthew 22. If the good Father likes to make comparisons, maybe look at Matthew 6.

So is this channel and these teachings in communion with Rome? You spend so much of your time posting videos attacking Novus Ordo mass, which okay, it’s not for you, fine. But it’s still a valid form of mass. This all reminds me so much of what Protestants do. They attack Rome too. We need to be one. Even if you pray in Latin and I pray in English, we are both Catholic. What’s your movement? SSPX? Old Roman Catholic Church?

They are listing the truths of the Novus Ordo. We recognize it as a valid form of the mass but does this make it a good mass? I will not have this debate on a comment section. I suggest learning more about the topic instead of posting this unnecessary comment.

What this channel Sensus Fidelium posts is content of priests in communion with the Holy See, most of which come from religious orders or societies of apostolic life under the Vatican's Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life.
These institutes, societies and religious orders are outside the diocesan structure which is what is most known, with diocesan priesthood and parishes, these societies of priests and religious brothers and sisters while in comunion with the Local Bishop also have a religious superior who answers to the Vatican.
Many of these pray in English and vernacular languages as well, but outside of the Liturgy. Some have music on the vernacular at the end of a Latin Mass, such as Christmas Carols and such, vernacular prayers have always been something good.
However Latin is reserved for the Liturgy for it being the official language of the Church as well as one of the languages that was on the Cross, it's a sacred language for that reason, and the only one of which has remained unchanged across the centuries, hence why the meaning of the prayers doesn't change over time.
Outside of the dramatic tone the priest presents, it shows that the Novus Ordo mass is impoverished, and it's use and misuse has had many negative consequences. These are facts, not opinions, as should be expected from a ritual that was sabotaged and restored just enough so that it would be valid, yet not ideal.
There are very detailed expositions on this channel as to how the shortcomings of the NO are detrimental to the priest and the faithful who attend for concrete reasons.
As the situation is problematic for the salvation of souls it is indeed necessary for priests to address the NO, Modernism and the changes in Catholic culture. So that they do not fall into error, and while the priests in Sensus Fidelium do not prefer the NO Missae, they do not see it as something intrinsically evil, but rather a barely valid Missae, due to heretics within the Church having a hand on it and other non-Catholic influences.
I have not seen the priests on this channel shun the NO laity nor priests who are sincerely trying to do their best. When speaking about the NO they only seem concerned with heresies, liturgical abuses, sin, the bad influences of culture. etc.
What I see most attacked in this video is how the World takes priority over the magnificence which was due to God alone. The NO Mass is a result of trying to make the Mass conform more to the people and the World, rather than bringing people to conform to God and renounce the influences of the World.
This is seen in the use of Latin, the faithful conform to the language of the Church, not the Church to the language of the world, and learning how to pronounce it is a worthwhile sacrifice, even if it is for memorizing a few sentences in the liturgy and learning sacred chant.
Christ refers to "The World", meaning vain interests, depravity, materialism, pride, banality, and other defects the World has.
That is why you see people dressing like they are going to the beach in NO masses, as it largely looks like an informal gathering in an informal place.
