Great tips and doing your balance exercises. Have unilateral vestibular vertigo- severe nerve hearing damage right ear. When doing leg lifts balance much better on right.. very weak left. Any tips for concentrating the weight shift? I tend to stiffen ankles knees calves very tight trying to stay strait and when walking and want to soften that up.

Great I argue this with the weightlifters all the time. balance vs strength. They tend to believe that strength will give them everything. I would add to what you have covered to challenge oneself even further would be to bring one leg back and lean forward (airplane)_ which is exactly how I almost fell last year on the way to my mailbox.

I will try your balancing exercises. I seem to have leg-weakening as well as balance problems. At age 85 or so, I gave up visits to the gym and 3-mile walks and went from 150 pounds body weight to 187. Before that I could spring from the floor using only one leg. Now I shuffle around cautiously and have no agility. A visit to the grocery store leaves my legs fatigued for a day or two. If I stand in one spot for several minutes talking with a neighbor, I need assistance getting back into my house. It's most embarrassing.

I have been doing this for a week, just now managed 50 seconds on the right and 65 on the left. (right knee had a meniscectomy several years ago and I have more trouble) I have also practiced walking in a narrow line (the walkway from my house to garage is 60' long and 7" wide. That was deliberate, it required half the usual number of pavers, but it forces me to walk more elegantly especially in high heels.
Watch video of elegant ladies and gentlemen and see how they walk. The Duchess of York, Sarah Ferguson, walked with an inelegant wide stance, like a waddle, and I noticed at the coronation her daughters walk the same way. I saw a video of myself walking 39 years ago, right after my last pregnancy, and resolved to do something about it.
My phone tracks my walking asymmetry as 7.4% (I do lug heavy loads of trash, animal feed and laundry around) and double support time of 24-34%.

So, if one has success (reaches the 20-second goal per leg in 1-leg standing), should he still do the tandem standing?

If the tandem stance is too hard, put the foot in front an inch or two to the side, still in front of the other.

I have partial drop-foot on my right side from damage done before I received back surgery many years ago. I'm 74. I've fallen twice in the last two months. So far, I can't balance on one foot. My right foot rolls to the outside. Anything I can do to offset the drop-foot?

Why is it young people do not have this problem? Why do older people have to go through this?

  • @janlang5999

I was born with right leg 1/2” shorter than my left leg no I’ve always had a problem with some balance like when we did in gymnastics you had to get up on a balance beam. OK I can get up there. Go take one step fall off floor exercises. I could do fine but I always had a limp my dad yelled at me all the time. Why are you limping well when I turn 16 I had the doctor measure me one hip is higher by half inch higher than the other one when he measured my legs it showed that he wasn’t like feet, it was one leg is half shorter so as I’ve gotten older now that I’m almost 74 the last 2 1/2 three years I’ve walked with a cane just for protection so I don’t fall. I’ve been trying to do some of the exercises that you suggest like putting 1 foot in front of the other well I still have to hang onto something or I will fall over, I’m trying to do exercises to strengthen when I’m in the house and even when I’m outside even though I have my cane I still kinda do it lift my leg enough like I look like I’m marching or slowly jogging

😂I don't think exercise can help my balance problem. My doctor has a name for this type of imbalance in older patients. I am 92 and am in fairly good health otherwise. I tend to fall backwards. Any suggestions?
