marty just wanted to say thanks for inspiring me to give fishing from a kayak a try. ive fished for a long time on the west coast and always figured fishing from a kayak would be more trouble than its worth, but after seeing your videos and the things you can do with your poor mans kayak i became curious and finally went and gave it a try. took a few times but i got on some fish and it was very exciting. its awesome to have a new fishing technique available to hone, so thank you again marty!
Dear Marty, I love the "how to" catch a specific fish. I am really hoping I see a how to catch a : snook, trout, red, etc... In the future. There are a million how to articles and videos on the internet, but nothing like this. The average how to is very broad with little details. Like go to mangroves with currents for snook, but there is a LOT more to it than that. Hope to see these again. Thumbs up Marty
That's the exact same size of my first flounder from a kayak that I caught about two weeks ago....right after I met you for the first time at the Pelican booth in Houston TX during the Bass Master Classic. I also would like to say thank for putting me in the video after the Houston Classic I was super stoked to have appeared in one of your video. Salutes
Mr. Z, as a novice to saltwater fishing the flats I really appreciate your vids. They are extremely informative. Thanks for your help and inspiration. Best to you and the Hobie in the new year.
Marty just watched this video again today. Really liked the double screen part with the lure on top. Didn't catch that the first time. That was impressive. Thanks for sharing . Have a happy safe and fish filled new year.
That is what I call finesse fishing. Takes a little bit of patience and lots of finesse to land flounder. You my friend...got both. Happy & Healthy New Year bud.
Wow man, what a tranquil video. One of the better fishing videos I’ve seen on RUclips. Great job and very informative brother, keep up the awesome work!
I subscribe to many channels on here but I must say when it comes to fishing adventure I think yours is the most real and most interesting I've come across. keep up the good work I really enjoy your videos.
sigh, i regret not taking up kayaking while i lived in FL :( Being in the Carolinas the variety of fish just isnt there, im living vicariously through you man! Happy new year and keep making awesome videos!
Happy New Year Marty. Thanks for another very informative video. I just learned that I've been fishing the exact same set up as yours, way too fast. My friend ( at least in my eyes), you teach me more and more each time I watch your terrific vids and I must say that I am so glad that I stumbled upon your web site. I feel as though I'm right there with you as we go though the production. I only wish that perhaps I might meet you some day. Please keep it up. Have the best year ever.
Great video! I just recently got into flounder fishing and discovered a little trick I might as well let you in on. Bass spinner baits. The flounder seem to love it up here in South Carolina!
Another great video, Marty. Used to fish for flounder on the Eastern Shore in Va. We always jigged the lure / minnow live bait across the bottom for best effect, keeping it slowly moving. Happy and Safe 2015!
Sweet video Marty, one thing that I have found really good for flats fishing is using Berkley gulp 3 inch New penny color shrimp with a red 1/4 ounce strike king redfish magic jighead. I catch snook, redfish, trout, flounder, Jack, etc with that lure. Another thing you should look into is first light tackle. They make some some awesome jigs for snook and redfish.
Happy New Year....there's a certain feeling of accomplishment when you target a species and catch that species, Anyone can through out a piece of cut bait and take what comes (and yes its fun too) but I love using skill and knowledge to angle what you're after. Look forward to seeing more on the micro pole.
Beautiful...love the lurer retreave effect at top of screen for those who missed it....(power pole down, sheilds up,,,tractor beam engaged) they are a funny fish...sometimes simple baits work best with (simple minded fish)....thanks and have a great New Year and many more to come, be safe out there...Tom and Connie
Pretty cool! Think this was the best video I have seen so far showing people how to catch flounder. When it warms up I will give it a try. I tried fishing yesterday and froze out on my jon boat.
Couple thing first I love to watch ur videos they bring back memories when I catch fish and your an idol second if your ever looking for a good snook bait I suggest xraps from rapala and you can find these weadless spoons they are rather decent size with like paper that shines in the water with fish scale designs they work really well for me and hope they work very well for you keep up the good work!
Happy New year to you as well. Going out in Intercoastal water at Wilmington NC to try this technique next week. Good advice and instruction as usual. Keep em coming
Awesome video!!! I look forward to checking out your channel some more!!! Tight lines and have a good weekend!!! And maybe I can get some flounder tips off you!!!
Happy New Year, Marty. I gotta stop watching your great videos! Prior to last year, I was always a closed kayak paddler, and although I fished, it was never from a kayak. Then I saw your poor man's yak and decided to try one. Of course, fish weren't the only ones who got hooked. Then you got the Hobie. I started looking at them and bought myself a Christmas present - a Hobie Pro Angler 12. However, living in snow country I have to now wait till spring to use it. I can hardly wait. Oh BTW, please don't buy anything else!! Marty
Flounder will often grab a bait and swim with it. You feel a little weight all of a sudden. Time to set the hook. They WILL spit it out sometimes but not often with gulps. :-)
hey, I'm from the east coast and flounder fishing Here in New York is huge, i would just like to tell you that over here many people like to jig just as you were told but with pink jigs, they work better and as ar as i know you need to keep the hook on the opposite side of the tail of the jig. Love the vids
Nice. Only hint I would add...at 4:34, don't let the flounder break the surface of the water...scoop the net under him. Right when they break the surface is when they commonly go ballistic...and are much more likely to spit the hook.
I love that area. That point is great for snook on an outgoing. I can get a little too crowded on the weekends though. Flounder are one of the few fish I will keep to eat but I like them to be about 16 inches or more. Less than that and there just isn't enough meat to bother with and the bottom is nothing. looks like chartreuse is working but I have always preferred white for flounder. Nice job targeting a species!
just saw this older video, good stuff, you may have already learned this Tip since then but here it goes. that chartreuse gulp is definitely a flounder assassin, but I have had explosive luck rigging and fishing it a little differently. instead of just a lead head I use a small Bucktail with the mullet. Above that buck tail mullet, about 16 inches, I put a drop loop and then attach a teaser either an unweighted Bucktail or a gulp shrimp alone on a bait hook, no weight. Also instead of anchoring and casting out I find I get more hits drifting and quickly twitching the bait an inch or two off the bottom as I drift. Good luck
One of the best ways I've found to catch flounder is with a bass fishing technique called the drop shot and a bright colored fluke. Bounce it along the bottom at a medium rate and they hit the flukes so hard.
see at 4:09 the fish starts to nibble on the bait. flounder nibble on the bait at times way more than other fish. what they do is carry the bait on their mouths and swim with it about 4-5 feet till they start to swallow it. when targeting flounder you gotta have patience. its rare the time a flounder will take the bait aggressively. i learned from alot of trial and error till i saw how they took the bait in clear water.. thumping a lure or scented lure works well. down here in deep south texas i use live small finger mullet, mud minnows, or pinfish (piggy perch) with the top pointy spines cut off. if you dont cut off those spines the fish will drop the bait most of the time. reds and trout will do it too. pinfish are easy to catch chumming the water and throwing a cast net over them but die rather faster in the live well when crammed. mullet can be targeted easier in schools above water level and mud minnows stay alive and strong on the hook for a really long time but are harder to find.. you show alot of initiative bro and thats a good thing. well keep giving you tips and tricks to becoming a better fisherman. you learn something new every time you are out in the water.. practice makes better.. keep the videos coming! you are doing a great job! tight lines and full stringers!
Hi Marty, Great video! After watching you adventures, I am hoping to have a hobie mirage drive to take to Alaska this summer for some fishing. Happy New year!
Happy New Year, Man. We used to catch flounder down at Sebastian using clear with gold or red flake curly tailed grubs, or rootbeer with gold and red flaked curly tailed grubs. We tipped them with a very small piece of fresh dead shrimp or mullet, not enough to effect the action, but enough to help them eat it a little more. Use the free line lever on your reel when you feel a bump, let them take off with it a little, they will stop and eat the bait then swim off again, that is the time to set the hook.
hey man, great video. if the flounder are anything like the ones here in Charleston. try live mud minnows on a small egg weight attached to a Carolina rig. works like magic. good look. and great fishing!!
Another great video Marty! You make it look so easy!! What few flounders I have caught I filleted, I had a friend tell me on the smaller ones to gut and dehead and cook them that way, like bluegill, how do you do yours? Happy New Year Marty!! Thanks for all your work on the great vids and sharing them with us!!!! W.
Another great show nut some words of advice is that when you hook the bait with the big jig. Push the hook farther down and also reel just a little faster to where its draging not siting ive caught man flounder like that
I know it's an old posting, but I'm looking forward to this fall for my first flounder expedition this coming November. ..thank you for sharing this cool tips!...
Hello Marty, I just subscribed to your channel and I am hooked. Your videos and simple ways of showing us how to fish on a budget are inspiring, so thank you for taking the time to upload them. Do you happen to know if flounder can be caught in Puerto Rico, on the west coast area of Mayaguez? The areas on your videos are very similar to that part of the Caribbean. Thanks, Jaime
thanks man i used this video and hauled in a new record for flounder, never used to jig, used to always use spoons for flounder but now i use jigs only, and yes it is the best fishing there is :)
What's going on! I've been watching your channel for quite some time now I love the videos keep it coming! I am currently a student here at USF Tampa a little north from where you usually fish. I was curious to ask. If you knew of any good saltwater fishing spots that I can get to by foot? I have tried the skyway bridge and just keep catching way to small fishes. I've always have had a passion for offshore fishing since I was ten over on the south east coast (North Miami). Obviously I don't have a boat with me at school but do have some tackle. Thank you and have a Happy New Year!
Great catch. Here in Southern California we call it Halibut. I like using Fluke Carolina rig. If you ever come to Los Angeles, hit me up glad to take you Striper Bass fishing. souther California Aquadut fishing.
Hello ! i have à kayak ! i live in France near méditerranean sea ! and since i discover your vidéos ! i want to try kayak fishing ! thank's for all ! and i wish you an happy new year ! ...
Hey Marty, during the winter months after the first cold front passes through the bigger flounder will head out to the open ocean for migration and then will return to the inlets and inshore during the spring and summer months. During the winter months only the smaller flounder will stay behind inshore because they are too small and will be eaten in the open ocean. So, if you're looking for big flounder it's best to hit this same spot with the same technique in the spring and summer months. I bet you'll catch some doormats then.
I know most people fish flounder slowly and advocate that you must go super-slow, and obviously that is a very successful way to get them, but they can also be very aggressive, too. I catch a lot of them retrieving jigs at a fast clip, the same speed I use to fish for reds and trout. They are especially aggressive up north (the summer flounder that they call "fluke" up there I think are more aggressive than the southern and gulf flounders that we catch far more often in Florida). I got tons of summer flounder and windowpane flounder in shallow water in the Long Island Sound by ripping bucktails the same speed I did for Stripers. I've also had a lot of luck catching flounder in Florida by fast-retrieving Gulp! shrimp and even mud minnows. Some days they are very finicky with live bait, then as soon as I start casting & retrieving the bait, they wake up. It's like they are a football team that plays down to its level of competition: you fish them slow, they'll take forever gumming the bait before taking it; you fish them fast and they'll attack it aggressively. This summer I even had a 16" flounder I hooked in New Smyrna jump completely out of the water and walk like a tarpon. I guess they have split personalities.
if you want to catch monster flounder attach that swimming mullet to a Spro bucktail and drag and slowley lift off the bottom. @ Zoff, do not throw out the flounder belly. cut it into strips and freeze it until you are ready to fish.
You make it look easy. ... I was always told the hottest time of year was the best for flounder catching. ..I want a hobie kayak after watching your videos, think there is enough room for a passenger? I want to take my little boy with me
Man, it took me WAY too long to figure out where you were in this video, but I was determined! Those peddles kick ass because that's a decent paddle. Nice job on catching dinner and on the instructional part of it as well. I've never caught flounder with that slow of a retrieve before, but I'll give it a whirl because they're my favorite as well! How deep would you say you were there?
Isn't RUclips great, it's made the world a smaller place so we see great Vid's like this. love your video's Marty, All the Best for the New Year from your subscribers in Australia. Cheers....
Usually in NJ, I fish my gulp jig much more aggressively. I find that I get way more action like that. Flounder are a pretty aggressive species of fish. They are really exciting to catch to, not only because they taste great, but because they fight really hard.
And man, it seems so weird to see people keep such small flounder. I know the regulations are different because they don't get very big down south. But in NJ our keepers seem like monsters at 18" compared to the short little guys.
TheMasterCasters Yeah man I moved down from upstate New York to Florida, I fished seaside heights NJ a lot and the flounder regs were so weird for me when I got down here. Flounder actually get to pretty good size down here. My friend got a 21 inch flatty last weekend. Get big just gotta work through the little ones. Tight lines.
HAPPY NEW YEAR, stay healthy . Again good job on the video good balance between the background music and actual video sound. we use the same lure but we slow drift.
You should try a tandem rig with a bucktail/grub combo as you're using on the bottom of the rig and another grub on a hook with a teaser skirt like 12-18" up the line (using a dropper loop or palomar knot)... Guaranteed you'll be hooking into a LOT more fluke this way, and you'll be surprised how many of them will go after the grub that's situated higher on the rig
Hey man you can also do this with live finger mullet! Just put an egg weight on (1/4 to even 1/2) that how I catch the flounder up here in North Carolina! You can actually look it up on RUclips! Just type Carolina rig and it should be there! Everybody has there own twist but you do the same rod motion as in this video. Just wanted you to know you've helped me a lot this year fishing! I watch you everyday. I like your videos so much that I am asking for an old town predator mx kayak for Christmas. Well anyway thanks for making videos and for helping me... I hope I helped you some!
Hey Marty, again a nice video from you! I always enjoy watching them! Here in the Baltic sea in Germany we also have nice Flounders, but they normaly dont bite so good on these rubber twisters as seen on this film. What i really always like is your music! May i ask you where you mostly get it from? i guess you dont compose it yourself, dont you? best wishes from Hamburg, Germany Olli - Baltic-Fisher
everybody listen, don't twitch your line that slow. you can move it along the bottom much much faster just make sure it touches the bottom after every rotation. faster jigging along the bottom also helps. flounder go for small fish and worms scooting along the bottom. this is why you should almost always drift fish flounder and fluke to produce more fluke. great video anyway! good work
Gulp is great on fluke , recommend trying a high low set up & drifting, bouncing bait off bottom. Kind of a slow motion jigging. Happy New Year hope to catch up with u on the water
I don't know about where you are fishing but in the ocean you want to keep a steady slow speed and twitch it as much as possible when you stop it it stops the scent trail if you do this you will most likely catch more and also try using a tandem rig
In my experience for flounder fishing you can drag it across the bottom a little faster with a little jerk to bounce the lure off the bottom so it can wiggle the way back down, flounder love that. Once you felt a little nibble let the lure sit for 20seconds then set the hook or simply just reel them in without setting it. Dont lift them out of water because it will come loose a lot of times but use net to scoop them. Just wanna share this.
When I was a kid, we used to catch flounder around the docks in Tampa Bay with a bright bare treble hook. Drag it along the sandy bottom and they would grab it.
I use that type of Gulp bait when fishing for flounder aka fluke in New Jersey. Flounder often lay in wait on the bottom to ambush their food so dragging and occasionally lifting the lure can be productive, as is drifting. They often follow their prey for short distances before taking them. In deeper water with a sandy bottom I'd advise using heavier dressed bucktail jigs tipped with those gulp mullets. White also works well. :)
Not much experience going after flounder from a boat, but rather wading in bays or right on the clear water gulf side from shore. I had never had much luck on the gulf side until I sort of caught one in the early a.m. by accident. I was using a silver/whitetail buck tail jig hoping for a pompano. When the lure was close to shore I basically quit working it and was just fast reeling it in over the sand for a recast...bam...big Flounder only six feet or so from shore edge. Over time I repeated what had worked and found success. I'd go out in the gray light of early morning, wade out maybe six or so feet in shin deep water and cast parallel to the bank with a jig or curley tail and would usually pick up a couple of large flounder. In the clear gulf water with white sand bottom you'd see an underwater explosion of sand and you'd be on. In the bays I'd follow what you were doing and find those sand circles amidst the eel grass and bounce jigs through them with good effect. I guess we learn through trial and error...as long as one pays attention to what they were doing when they actually caught a fish, you can often repeat thta success.............love your videos!
Yo Zoffinger, I bought a Hobie PA 14 and will be picking it up Tuesday. I'm thinking about getting a power pole like yours. Is it worth the money in your opinion. It looks like a good investment. I've been watching your videos. Really impressed I gotta say. I'm hooked. lol
another good way to flounder fish from a boat is to use a carolina rig. just let the current carry the boat and let the sinker drag the bottom. the bait will drift just off the bottom. just watch your rod tip bounce along until it goes down and doesn't come back up. its surprising how fast you can be moving and flounder can still grab it. I've caught a lot of flounder in some fast moving tide. they seem to like deep holes. good eating too!
here in new jersey we call then fluke and our keeper limit is 18 inches crazy right there also a 5 fish limit per day how many can you keep in fl thanks for the vids wish they came out faster im always looking for new vids I think ive watched all the old ones multiple times
Fluke and flounder are very, very similar but they are different fish. I have cousins up in NY and we sometimes go on a little fishing trip, one time for fluke.
+KnackAttack H. The only difference between fluke and flounder is sometimes fluke have eyes on both sides instead of one side. Most of the time it's genetics. The reason our flounder size limit is so big is because we have summer flounder and the flounder they catch in Florida are southern flounder or gulf flounder. They are smaller and do not get very big down there. I live in Delaware and we call it flounder. Around mid jersey and north people say fluke and I don't know why cause they are called summer flounder
The way I catch flounder is with that same set up but with a teaser about 6-10 inches above the jig head with about 4-6 inches of line forking off the main line, for a teaser, just a j hook with another gulp. Also I reel at a slow but consistent speed, lifting the rig up and down from the sand. But I do it softly, not aggressive bounces. That's how I catch fluke and flounder in massachussets. Just a tip. By the way, love the vids and the new hobie, but it needs a tiki man

My sentiments can only echo yours, Peacepipe. He's made an abundance of friends. And like Clarence said, no man is a failure who has them.
omg yes thank you you read my mind and put it into text lol

This is a great video. Usually when I am looking for helpful flounder videos it's all rigs and baits. Not how to work the lures.
Happy New Year....there's a certain feeling of accomplishment when you target a species and catch that species, Anyone can through out a piece of cut bait and take what comes (and yes its fun too) but I love using skill and knowledge to angle what you're after. Awesome video!!! I look forward to checking out your channel some more!!! Tight lines and have a good weekend!!! And maybe I can get some flounder tips off you!!!
That gulp is the only flounder bait I use, but in many different variations. The stuff is truly amazing and I suggest everyone try it. Great video too
Yet another great video!! Really like the "How To" part of it! Hope your holidays are going well. Happy New Year!!

Well done on this years fishing Marty. Happy new year for 2015 and may all your days fishing be as exciting as the very first was for you :)
Great video bud keep up the great advice and keep tight lines have a great new year. can't wait to see the new vids to come.

hey man, great video. if the flounder are anything like the ones here in Charleston. try live mud minnows on a small egg weight attached to a Carolina rig. works like magic. good look. and great fishing!!
Showing the action of the lure at the top of the screen in amazing.. Keep making these great videos
Happy New Year! Thanks for all the videos and great ideas!
I really think you will get bigger and more flounder in the spring summer and fall. Great video
Hello ! i have à kayak ! i live in France near méditerranean sea ! and since i discover your vidéos ! i want to try kayak fishing ! thank's for all ! and i wish you an happy new year !
Starting to get warm...can't wait to try your advice!
Another great video Marty. Keep em coming.
you are so awesome I love watching your videos they are so cool
if you want to catch monster flounder attach that swimming mullet to a Spro bucktail and drag and slowley lift off the bottom. @ Zoff, do not throw out the flounder belly. cut it into strips and freeze it until you are ready to fish.
Thanks Marty! Happy new year! You're awesome dude
About 5ft deep
Isn't RUclips great, it's made the world a smaller place so we see great Vid's like this. love your video's Marty, All the Best for the New Year from your subscribers in Australia. Cheers....
Thank you, Chris! Happy New Year. I'll be stuck in 2014 about 5 hours longer than you
Usually in NJ, I fish my gulp jig much more aggressively.
May i ask you where you mostly get it from? i guess you dont compose it yourself, dont you?
best wishes from Hamburg, Germany
Olli - Baltic-Fisher
I wish I could say the music was mine but it is just what came with my editor (Pinnacle Studio 17)
zoffinger Thanks for your answer, Marty! Have a good time....
I'm lovin the videos my friend. Keep them coming!
Happy and Healthy new Year Marty!
everybody listen, don't twitch your line that slow. you can move it along the bottom much much faster just make sure it touches the bottom after every rotation. faster jigging along the bottom also helps. flounder go for small fish and worms scooting along the bottom. this is why you should almost always drift fish flounder and fluke to produce more fluke. great video anyway! good work
Also most of my flounder that I catch are when you are reeling it in while the line is close to your boat or whatever your fishing on off the bottom
YOUR RIGHT ME TOO BRO! HOOKEN IN THE MOUTH! CHECK OUT MY CHANNEL
Greeting from Singapore. Hope you have a awesome holiday and happy new year as well
You Have What I Lable As A Teachers Voice❗️The Type I Learn Well From❗️Great Vid Sir❗️
Good video happy new year all the way from New Jersey I love your videos
I like your music...kind of sets the environment. Do you make your music/toons too? Such as piano toons, etc.
You make so great videos keep up the great work.
I always like to put a greenback on a float rig and fish it in places like the ones you were. I have had lots of success for flounder doing so.
+Zoffinger which model of the Hobie is your kayak?
Your videos are awesome!
Gulp is great on fluke , recommend trying a high low set up & drifting, bouncing bait off bottom. Kind of a slow motion jigging. Happy New Year hope to catch up with u on the water
what state are you in im in south east Texas and id love to go on a fishing trip with you ive never been saltwater fishing mabey you could show me?
Hey Man, you ever fish Miguel Bay? It would be really cool if you made a video fishing there.
precisely the same method and color I have used in the past to catch them in the bayous of Mississippi. Nice video. have a happy new year.
I don't know about where you are fishing but in the ocean you want to keep a steady slow speed and twitch it as much as possible when you stop it it stops the scent trail if you do this you will most likely catch more and also try using a tandem rig
What kind of kayak are you using? I like your setup and have been thinking about buying one. Thanks in advance !!
Thank you, huy bui. I try that.
When I was a kid, we used to catch flounder around the docks in Tampa Bay with a bright bare treble hook. Drag it along the sandy bottom and they would grab it.
I enjoy your works and journeys, what is the thing with spotlighting flounder at night, using a spear?
I use that type of Gulp bait when fishing for flounder aka fluke in New Jersey. Flounder often lay in wait on the bottom to ambush their food so dragging and occasionally lifting the lure can be productive, as is drifting. They often follow their prey for short distances before taking them. In deeper water with a sandy bottom I'd advise using heavier dressed bucktail jigs tipped with those gulp mullets. White also works well. :)
Great vid Marty happy holidays and have a great new year
Happy New Year Marty. Another cool vid..
I love your videos and I am glad to see that there is only 1 dislike and I don't even know who would not like this video.
Watch your videos alot man. I love catching sheepshead
+ajandnik1 16 inch throw backs all day long.
Just a tip. By the way, love the vids and the new hobie, but it needs a tiki man
I love the fact that he actually eats the fish. I'm all for catch and release but sometimes...you just gotta eat.
