    I use the exact same thing here in Texas and the flounder can't resist it. I typically have great luck with the Chartreuse 4" Swimming Mullet, though I often try different colors. During the flounder run in October-November, they'll hit on anything. Tandem-rigged is the way to go with flounder.

      +Texas Coastal Sportsman when Scott tied the loop knot for the swivel. Do you add the swivel to the rig or do attach the rig to the main line that has the swivel attached?

    • @brianharvey351
      @brianharvey351 8 лет назад

      I think it depends on what he's referring to as a swivel. If he's talking about what I would call a regular swivel, I could see just putting the swivel on your rig and have it already on the loop of the rig; then you'd just tie the swivel to your main line. If you went this route you'd have to make your rig with the swivel on there and it would never come off. If he's referring to a quick connect type swivel, then you'd leave it on your main line and just snap your loop onto it when you want to use that specific rig.

      My boat is a 25' C-Hawk Pilothouse called VENATOR. Holler if you see us out! We had a cobia hit your rig at 3rd island last weekend on a small flounder/bass spinning rod my buddy was holding....tore it to pieces and gone quickly....Shortly afterward one (possibly the same one) hit my heavier spinning rod that I was jigging a bucktail with curlytail grub. Fought it about 5 mins before it threw the hook. I'm 0 for about 6 on Cobia this year so far. Flounder picking up though.

    Thanks, I've always used bottom rigs with squid or bloodworms, can't wait to try this. I'll be fishing out on the Chesapeake Bay from a boat, what size jigs should I be using? I usually let the boat drift up a sandy bottom.

    • @scottnra
      @scottnra  4 года назад

      Steve Z As light as you can to keep it close to vertical. If you are casting in skinny water, probably about 3/8 and a gulp would be fine and just bounce along the bottom. We usually use 1 - 3oz depending on the drift and depth.

    Thank you for sharing your expertise. I just want to know if I can use 30 lb braided line (power pro super slick , blue or high vis yellow) isntead of mono or flouro line?

    • @scottnra
      @scottnra  9 лет назад +1

      riley633 I'm sure you can, but keep in mind Flounder are sight feeders mostly. I don't know if I'm right or not about them getting tackle shy, but I think any edge you can get helps you catch more fish. I would stick with flourocarbon for the actual rig. If you are going to go with a superbraid, keep it thin and an green so as not to stand out too much. I think FC is worth the little extra $ for the rig, and yeah you might loose a few more on snags, but I really think you'll catch more fish.

    new to flounder fishing - spent most of my childhood using downriggers to salmon fish Lake Michigan, and I look forward to using this method in the bay near Ocean City, New Jersey when I retire there. Question - is this rig paired with anything else on the line? You mentioned a four inch mullet - is that a bait you add to this? Do you add any weight to the line as well? I am assuming that the rig as is wouldn't sink and stay at the bottom, but maybe I am wrong?

    • @scottnra
      @scottnra  4 года назад

      Patrick Fitzpatrick It will get down unless your current is really strong. Gulp 4" swimming mullet is a soft plastic like bait you find at a tackle store.

    I have fished on a big headboat out of Maryland about 20 miles off the coast (near or over 100 feet of water in most spots), where we used 8 ounce sinkers and it wasn't even rough out. Briefly, how would that need for a sinker affect this setup? I want to be able to have tackle to accommodate this type of situation if I need 8 ounces again, and do NOT want to use their setup of bare hook with bait. Thanks

    • @scottnra
      @scottnra  9 лет назад

      +dmger14 We've done it plenty like that. Using a dropper rig with a sinker to hold in fast current and about a 10' leader to a lighter jig. no problem, works great. Use enough weight to stay near vertical and you'll hang up less.

    This is for slow current? i cant see this working without a large sinker in fast current like eastern end of long Island or deep fluking in 50' + off of Jersey. Have you used this in these conditions and if so to what effect?

    • @scottnra
      @scottnra  9 лет назад

      patrick kelly Actually yes, sort of. We use a dropper at the BBT in up to about 80' of water with a 10' or so leader and the jig/gulp with pretty good luck But that is really not the same rig at all. This one works well to about 30' IF the current, drift and wind all working together. Sometimes when things are weird, you can get down well at 15' but those are tough days and not that often.

  • @Blitz0203
    @Blitz0203 6 лет назад

    Scott,
    When you put a jig at either end as you do, don't the jigs tend to wrap around one another while fishing? Why not just use a drop loop? Rick

    • @scottnra
      @scottnra  6 лет назад

      I've done t both ways. I went to the drop loop rig with high hook recently because I just use a bare hook/gulp on top. That way when I get hung up and lose a rig, It cost less! haha. The twin jigs do not ever wrap up. They run very well. but it gets costly fast when you fish structure. If you fish more open water this is a very hard rig to beat! Thanks for watching!

    Now how do you fish it fast or slow. I would think you drag it real slow but I don't know. thank you for the info

    • @scottnra
      @scottnra  10 лет назад +1

      Drop it down to the bottom. When you feel the bottom, lift it up about 4 - 6" and bouncy it, allowing it to hit the bottom every few moments or so to make sure you are following the bottom contour. You don't want to drag it along because you will hang it constantly on anything down there, plus real bait fish don't drag bottom. Flounder are sitting on the bottom looking up. As long as it is within sight of them they will come up and hit it. You will also catch a lot on the top jig. The bottom one get's their attention and they come up, then get distracted by the top one and nail it instead. A good stiff action rod and braided line are a MUST to feel what is going on.

      shelley dupont We've done best with white/white. But we have also done well on red/white, yellow/white, green/white, Chartreuse, and even pink combos. Flounder are sight feeders. Keep it BRIGHT and I think you'll do better. It also helps to know what they are feeding on. This time of year sometimes the ones we catch spit up a minnow to give you clues. We have seen small sea mullet in them so far and they are mostly white.

      Brandie Fox Sure! (As long as it's not too rough you should do great.) In fact with currents pulling the rig along it should help you cover a lot of bottom area pretty quickly. once you find them, stay on them and pound the heck out of them. :-)

      Brandie Fox Well in the areas I fish it starts in one part about Late April, early may, then others June as they move into and up the bay, and on into September and even October as they migrate out of the Chesapeake bay. I would imagine that other areas would be different based on water temps.

That's a pretty large range. Also have a few spots on the eastern shore where they arrive first in about 2 or 3 weeks. They are there from May until September.

      Thanks for all the info Scott, that's pretty generous of you! I don't fish much in the Chesapeake Bay, I guess that's why I didn't know much about flatties in the bay. But I might give it a try one day. If I do, what kind of structure (sandy bottom, rocky bottom, channel edges, etc) and water depth would you recommend? I have caught several large flounders in Texas before, but never tried fishing for them in the east coast. Are they generally come into the Chesapeake Bay from May to September? I'm thinking about giving it a try around the Cornfield Harbor/Point Lookout area to see what I can catch or I might give Cape Charles a try if I have time. Do you fish for them with minnows or artificial lures? BTW, where does Bouy 38 located? Thanks buddy for any help you could give me and for being so honest.

      Grand Wonder 38 is north of a reef called "The Cell" Water depth's Ive caught fish in range from 3' to over 50' All you mentioned can be good spots. You just have to hunt until you find them.

    I see your bucktails have a little spoon on them? Do you have a link to where to buy them?

      Grant Weed Those were Hyper Striper Road Runners. A local shop had a ton of them marked way down to clear out and I think we bought over 100 of them. We were using mostly 3/4oz in this video. Amazon has them here: amzn.to/2I5NFYX

    I notice you have spinner blades on your rigs, If so what size are they. Does it matter what color the hair is?

      +Craig Bireley I have done best with white, but also good on chartreuse. The Hyper Stripers are great but pricey. We have gone to regular whit bucktails and mostly flat head style to stay more vertical in current and deep water. I have a video series up now showing how to make them from scratch, but you can buy them also at most tackle shops. Size is whatever weight you need to stay close to vertical for the conditions you are in. We use from 3/4oz to 2.5oz. If that won't hold, we'll go to a dropper rig with a sinker and 3-way with about a 6-10' leader to a 1/4 or 1/2oz bucktail. (Rare)

    Put a swivel on your loop to keep twist out

      +desert1cop We hook it to a snap swivel when attaching it to the line. That does a good job.

      Cool I use to just tie my main line to the loop without a swivel,it would screw my line bad
