    My big difference in my binging now then before is forgiving myself and showing compassion for myself. I don’t belittle myself over it instead I keep working towards recovery with love and compassion.

    WOW this is so good!! I found myself getting triggered because these are so accurate for me. I often feel I’m not good enough; that I can’t connect with people until I’m healed/ thinner/etc; that my life revolves around my recovery and I can’t fully live or engage in life to the fullest until I’m “cured.” This gave me so much to think about. Thank you Sarah!!

    This video is so on point! I have felt myself that the willingness to be wrong and to confront my own apocalyptic ideas around food and around life has been extremely helpful for my recovery. I would add a 5th factor: willingness to find joy and comfort in things unrelated to food, and I mean both seeking comfort by binging or by trying to lose weight. Once I recognized that I tend to binge when I am tired or frustrated with my work, I have been actively trying to find ways to find other ways to satisfy my emotional needs. I haven't been particularly successful yet, but I will keep on trying!

    I'm listening to the part where you talk about not waiting until you "fix yourself" before you do the things you want to do in life (dating was the example). As I thought about this, I realized the things I want to do all have to do with *celebrating* weight loss. Running a 5k, kayaking, climbing a mountain......I did all these things before, in the celebration of the 81 pounds I had lost. Now I've gained it all back and honestly, I can't think of a single thing I want to do that doesn't have to do with "reaching my weight loss goals". I am not able to do those things until I lose the weight.
    I'm just thinking aloud but if you have any comments, I welcome them. 👍

      I'm wondering what the middle ground is between a 5k/climbing a mountain to where you are now. Is watching your body achieve things satisfying to you? Are there other more supportive goals along these lines that are still possible to do in the body you have today? Are you willing to do some 'middle ground' activities?

    This is probably my favorite recovery video so far! The willingness to be wrong is something i have so much resistance to. challenging the belief system that supports the binge eating behavior is something i know i should do, but find it difficult to do so. letting go of the beliefs that have been a part of me for a very long time is threatening. But little by little, i can see some improvement in myself when it comes to challenging my beliefs. it's all thanks to u Sarah and Stef! ❤️❤️❤️

    Hello Sarah, I just want to thank you, the measure of my gratefulness to you can not be expressed in the words of my limited vocabulary......:)) you, your videos and your podcast are the reasons I finally, fully, clearly and completely understand what I UNCONSCIOUSLY AND UNAWARELY did to myself for the past 2ish years. I was literally restricting and still in the diet mentality, always deliberately prolonging the time between meals and ignoring my first hunger sensations, thinking that "I know better" and it wouldn't hurt to "make sure I look as good as possible". And towards the end of the week, my hypersensitivied "crisis brain" went into full bingeing mode, that caused my diet brain to freak out even more and cause emotional distress as well, then I mistook all of this fiasco for just emotional eating when I was literally restricting without being aware of it💀
    It s unbelievable how easy it is to see all of this for what it is, now. It s just incredible that I wasn't aware of it for such a long time. Always at war with myself and fighting with my biology for stupid aesthetic reasons, trying to control everything, and of course, losing every weekend, because it s just a pointless hurtful war with myself, that I really just couldn't win=))))
    But now, I finally understand that there s no war to fight, but only to listen and honour to my body. Finally, after all this time:)) And I really just have to thank you for this enlightenment really. i think it all clicked when I realized that there was really not a single binge in my life that was not caused because I kept posponing meals and ignoring my first hunger cues, and only ate when they got really bad. Then my brain started to fill up to prepare for the "soon to be famine" and so on=))
    Just thank you thank you and God bless you, keep posting these videos and those episodes because you change lives🥺❤️

    I recognize my question! Thank you Sarah 😊🙏 Obviously I know you haven’t got all the answers, and I was thinking in a sort of philosophical/rhetorical way at the time, but this video is actually grounded and helpful :) I think that I have all this blocks myself, and I’m particularly tormented by difficulty with forgiving myself. It shows up less around eating, and more with times I’ve hurt people or let them down, or done other things that are outside of my integrity (for example stealing). I get caught in a terrible shame spiral where food is the only outlet... basically every day 🤕

    • @TheBingeEatingTherapist
      @TheBingeEatingTherapist  2 года назад +1

      I’m glad you saw it. I couldn’t find your comment to let you know!
      The question that comes to mind is would you forgive someone else for the same thing or would you agree they ought to forgive themselves? That’s the starting place, is it really so terrible if we would feel compassion for another in a similar position?

    • @mlouw8218
      @mlouw8218 2 года назад

      @@TheBingeEatingTherapist That’s a good question… I’ll have to think about… I’m wondering if wanting to be a good person and do no harm, may be mixed up with a bit of arrogance: actually wanting to be better than other people 🤔

    • @TheBingeEatingTherapist
      @TheBingeEatingTherapist  2 года назад +1

      We all have egos that want to be special. I really relate to what you are saying, I’m not sure if arrogance is the most helpful word, maybe ego?

      @@TheBingeEatingTherapist Lol, it definitely sounds like a judgement 🙃 I used it because I was thinking of philosophers like Aristotle and Nietzsche who talked about this sort of superior person. It’s like: I need to be clever, wise, strong, fast, wealthy, virtuous, and beautiful… and then I can be… magnanimous 😅 I guess it could be ego or arrogance, but it’s definitely not humble :)

    This is an excellent topic. I've spent my life with all these "rules" in my head around my weight, so thinking about living life in spite of where my body is these days is a real win! I'm NOT a bad, lazy, unlovable person because I struggle with food. When I think about it like you asked regarding forgiving another person for the same act that you did. I absolutely said yes! So it's my intention to put myself onto that list of forgiveness because, after all, we're all human and we all deserve support, love and forgiveness.
    I asked this next question on another much earlier video but this is more current and you might see it here better. Is there an episode on how to deal with emotions? Do you have any tips, tricks, things that work for you that you can share? My huge emotions are also a huge trigger into a binge.
    I have never heard a person put binging and food obsession in the light that you have and your content is literally an answer to a prayer/vibe/plea that I put out into the universe recently for help that I desperately needed. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Truly.

    Hi Sarah! I always look forward to your videos :) Have you ever done a video on calorie counting? I'd love to know your thoughts. Helpful tool or obsessive focus on food?
    I have used calorie counting off/on for years as a way to be aware of how much I'm eating. But when I over eat and it can be really disheartening to see (cue shame spiral). If I do eat under my budget, I feel the need to eat extra just because I can.

    Sarah, thank you for this insightful video.
    I wonder if the first three wouldn't come easily (or more easily) if tackling the forth? As a "side effect" so to say.
    For me it's utterly difficult to summon all the energy I'm putting into all this weight/weight loss business into something more life fulfilling/re-enhancing. With weight there is no reap (beside for a brief moment), only ongoing struggle.
    Unfortunately, there is nothing I come up with.
    The feeling of a body with less weight is positively strong that makes the quest to find something other even harder.

    I liked a comment you made on a podcast about being a former smoker but how that’s no longer part of your identity. I’m also a former smoker, not a day goes by that I don’t think about having a smoke even though it’s been over 30 years since I had one. It gives me hope to think someday binge eating could be relegated to that same place, just a random thought, that’s easily ignored.
