  • June 26th will mark the 50th anniversary of U.S. President John F. Kennedy's famous speech: "Ich bin ein Berliner".
    The speech, which underlined the United States support for West Germany in the wake of the construction of the Berlin Wall, proved to be a great morale boost for the people of West Berlin.
    It concluded President Kennedy's state visit to Germany, during which he also visited the cities of Cologne, Bonn, Hanau, Frankfurt and Wiesbaden.

      "germans of course also absolutely loved reagan" - no certainly not! He was viewed as an uninformed, belligerent moron. His Berlin Wall speech was widely ridiculed (in the USA, it's rated almost Gettysburg-scale eloquence); Helmut Kohl rightly feared it might derail the entire de-Stalinization project of Gorbachev. Maybe, old German Nazis like him honoring the Waffen SS!@@A_annoying_rodent

      @@A_annoying_rodent Not true. Germans did not love Ronny. Maybe a group of old-fashion Germans but not the people. On the contrary Germans loved Kennedy and still they talk about him. And also they don't believe a lone nut shot him.
      I sensed back in late 80's, early 90's, Germans respected Gorbachev a lot more than Reagan. They saw this last one as a guy who was preparing a war.

      I don't think this time was the best for the US but for sure he was a fine president. One of the best ones. Unfortunately he had more enemies in his homeland than any other place around the world. One of his worst enemies was the military industrial complex because he wanted peace. Ironically the ones who want peace die violently.

      Agreed plus fact that between 1962-1965 the US (more so than even Little Switzerland, lol, had THE best/highest Living standards/Quality of Life in the world. We as a government/nation/society have to quickly do the impossible & More to finally be #1 again (in ALL areas), something difficult no doubt yet still very doable, necessary, desirable & worthwhile (for starters).....more so if we are to call ourselves (& consider ourselves a Global superpower). Cheers....

Also LOVED him & Admired & Respected him (being a decorated & famous US WW2 Navy officer/combat veteran (see video if JFK at Annapolis/Naval Academy commencenent address/speech & crowd's reaction) & who supported improving American military readiness, & boosting key areas/programs/units such as the super elite (then & now & always) Army's Green Berets & the elite US Navy SEAL teams & much more while simultaneously cutting back on dependence & production of nuclear weapons & NBC/WMD in general.

    I don’t think anyone could understand what exactly Kennedy was and why he is so universally loved more than this video.
    20 years after we had defeated them as nemesis. This man comes up and has a crowd of millions of Germans shouting his name in admiration and waving American flags.
    Like a Roman consul during a triumph.

    No US President has ever drawn such enthusiastic and numerous crowds overseas as JFK did. Reagan just followed in his footsteps, and didn't arouse half as much excitement.

      It was a different time and the communists were on their heels when Reagan made his speech. In 1963, the communists were still advancing and it was an open question which side would prevail. There was great fear and apprehension in 1963 whether the USA would go to all out war to protect the enclave of West Berlin. That heightened fear did not exist in 1987 when Reagan delivered his speech. One could say that the shoe was now on the other foot.

    I remember we came dangerously close to going to war over West Berlin. Those old kinescopes of Checkpoint Charlie poignantly demonstrated this for everyone to see. Sure am glad that war didn't break out after all!

    It's crazy I live on the same street 1km from the Rathaus where he gives the line "ich bin ein Berliner' at the end. Last month, there was a school teachers strike & rally at the same spot, but less people :)

    Kennedy had some major faults in his personal life, but life is about balance. He made mistakes as a President, but some great accomplishments too. The men who were on the PT 109 with him had nothing but good things to say about his leadership.

    Around this time, my mom got my dad a shortwave radio for their anniversary. Dad heard JFK's Berlin Wall address on that radio, and he loved both the radio and this speech by Kennedy. Dad felt that this speech was very powerful in its meaning. He also felt that his shortwave radio was his connection to the world; he spent a good deal of time listening to broadcasts from Canada, the US, West Germany, and so on.

      There was an interpretator there speaking in German. President Kennedy introduced him to the crowd before he began his speech.

      That was not the question, there was an interpretator there. You need to research the whole speech because President Kennedy acknowledged the interpretator during the whole speech.

    It's interesting that Stalin didn't support the idea of dividing Germany. Moreover, Stalin suggested that West and East parts of Germany join together back to 1950s, but on condition that it would be a neutral state and it wouldn't join NATO. But NATO states refused.

      My German friends have all told me that what Kennedy said isn't actually grammatically incorrect, and no one in Germany thought twice about it at the time either. Apparently it was only the Americans who gave him a hard time about the alternate "jelly donut" meaning.

      Well Berliner is a person who lives in Berlin, but you would say Ich bin Berliner. With the ein added in he called himself a certain type of cake. I don't remember what type exactly.
