I read somewhere that 80% of Ireland came out to 'see' him somewhere on his trip. No way to know. Pretty special. Now, it seems such visits to other countries are a pain the fanny. That could be due to 22 Nov, but somehow things are sadly not the same. Ike was highly respected in western Europe, but the fuss made over JFK was remarkable. If Kennedy had lived long through his Presidency he would have been one of the greatest President in the United States. He was very intelligent man with tremendous knowledge of wisdom. May his soul rest in perfect peace with Almighty God.

Indeed. And such traditions died hard. I remember working men in the 80's complaining that a young fellow's wife had a job at the bank. 'Just taking a job away from a man' they said ... and they meant it I just wish the economics were such that families could legitimately choose to have someone at home when the children come home from school etc. While community programs have some value they are no substitute for parents and parenting. However, these parents have to be able to pay their way and still be fresh to engage with their children. Not easy/possible for most today. If the stock market had not been deregulated and the resulting crashes and downsizing etc maybe families would still have a choice. Dunno, but I wish they did.
