Björn, thanks for your opinion. I own an i4e40 and after almost 4 months of ownership I can underwrite your conclusions on comfort and efficiency. Now, commenting on why first a niche i3 and i8, I believe BMW wanted to avoid recalls on a big volume car. It looks like that the philosophy of how to bring a car to market is totally different between the traditional automakers and the new kids on the block. Where Tesla promises or brings something to market which is not entirely ready (panel gaps, rust on earlier X’s, poor general build quality of seats in earlier days), the Germans and Japanese want to get it right the first time they try. I find it remarkable that BMW brings its first volume model to market on a relatively new technology to them on a compromised platform (according to a lot of people) and gets an efficiency close to the product of a company which is dedicated to EV from their start on.

@@kharimott8227 I believe the steering wheel is thicker and has more padding. I like it. For me the main reason for the m sport package was the inclusion of the adaptive suspension: In default "comfort" mode the i4 just glides... and when I switch to "sport" it stiffens up the suspension and changes the steering response making whizzing around all those lovely bends on my way to work a lot of fun. Very happy with my car, except for the extra £750 to enable adaptive cruise control.. (the buttons are on the steering wheel but you have to pay to enable them...) and I also would opt for the enhanced audio.

Is this one much more comfortable to drive than the M50? Having the Kona today, I would like an efficient car with low consumption (drove Oslo-Lillestrøm in rush hour on average 111Wh/km), but wants to avoid the noise in the cabin. The M50 was ok, but even lower noise level would be good. The wheels had a very low profile, I guess a little less extreme low profile could give more comfort. Anyone with advice on tires? Think I would go for 18». Now there is said to come a 4x4 eDrive40. So there will be a lot of options, as if this wasn’t difficult enough with all the options to choose from already 😅.

It's nice to see that the whole range argument is becoming more and more obsolete. 5% more or less is no longer a real argument for most customers, just as it was not for fossil cars with slightly more or less consumption. Even the eqe or eqs are efficient with the right package, of course not with fat performance tires. But overall it means customers have more choice and fossil cars lose their advantages, that's important, not everyone wants a Tesla and that's the only way more people will switch from fossil cars, that's really the point. Also, whether you need 20min longer or shorter for 1000km is not really decisive, in everyday life it doesn't matter at all for most people. The important thing is that there are now many really good electric cars. Good job BMW and that gives hope for the "new class" platform which then hopefully also loses its excess in weight.

Basic options that you'd expect on pretty much any new car, let alone a "luxury-lite" car put the price up very high. This is not some secret bargain. Optioned out this car is very nice. Agree! Also keep in mind that the 1000 cycles are to 80ish % remaining capasity (or was it 70%?), which means that it could go for a long time. Say you reach 600 000km and has 70% battery capasity left, that would mean you still would have 420km range (600 * 0.70).

That’s before the federal tax credit that the BMW qualifies for, but is no longer available for Teslas. Fair or not, that’s the reality here and with the credit the BMW is 6% cheaper. Govt crash ratings for the Tesla 3 and BMW 440i are both 5-star. The BMW heads up display adds an unquantifiable level of safety. We test drove both and I far preferred the BMW for dynamics, ambience and quality. Tesla is a generation ahead in battery/motor/software but the BMW has near comparable efficiency and gave a more pleasurable driving experience. The i4 is very well made (you have to like the looks) but unfortunately it doesn't come cheap either and several have noted that the BMW is overpriced for what's on offer. But of course that is always very individual, because the customer also buys very much based on emotions.
Also, 5 stars in the crash test would actually be a must for a premium vehicle in this price range.
20:05 In my opinion, the user interface at BMW is far better than at VAG-models, for example, where you have huge tiles spread over several pages, which looks very confusing/nested. In my opinion, it makes no sense to make them so big, because the argument "so that you can hit them while driving" is rather weak, because all other controls (including others on the display, like the home button) are much smaller.

Bjørn, please make a video about which model you would choose, the edrive40 or M50. I'm trying to choose between these models. I also live in Scandinavia so my concern is how a rearwheel drive car will handle winter conditions. I would need the range that the edrive40 has and the power it has is already more than I need. It would be nice if you could test the M50 with the most efficient tires available and to make a video about how the M50 can match edrive40 in efficiency. Also it would be nice to hear your opinion on which model drives better. Many RUclips channels prefer the edrive40 and says it is running more stable. Actually many says M50 is a little unstable and feels out of control in some situations.

Driving in D mode with Adaptive Regeneration would probably yield more efficiency than all of that and less work. Since BMW went with brushes on the motor, the motor can truly freewheel. The car will coast and not regenerate until it needs to decelerate for a reason such as a slower car ahead. Coasting is more efficient than regeneration since you always have energy loss in the transfer. Save B mode for when you KNOW you will be decelerating, like driving around town.
