Hi Björn, Interesting results, maybe I should try to challenge you with my new "old mans I4" without M-sport. I think you will get even better range results if you swich to ECO-pro mode that is natural to use for constant speed driving. Also, in that mode and using the adaptive regeneration mode instead of the B-setting( one pedal drive) the car vill free-roll as soon as it goes downhill. A bonus is that you don't have to keep your foot on the throttle pedal. Of course in order to improve the comfort and range even more, my car has the 17" aerodynamic rims. I guess you will not find a dealer demo with such "boring" set of wheels, but actually the handling is quite OK, unless you take the car to a racing-track. My car has an average consumption of 15 kWh/100 km, with a lot of short trips up and down a hillside for dog walks and mostly the AC working significantly. The hatchback rear door (for the dog) and my preference for low premium cars that are fun to drive made up a very short list for the moment (I4 and Polestar 2).
Hello, I'm looking now to buy an i4 too and I'm happy to see someone considering 17" base wheels as an option. I'm too, but when I asked for advice in social media i4 groups, many answered me to keep my Kia E-Niro, if I can't afford big wheels. I can afford them, that's not the point. I just want to know if comfort and hanlingon everyday and long trips are good, that's all. I suspect thes guys are just those who made BMW drivers bad reputation. So my question for you is simple: do you still appreciate driving your i4 with those 17" wheels, sir? :)
Its almost a shame BMW pushed the M50 so much with journalists - gave it a bad name for efficiency and range. The 40 seems a great balance of performance, efficiency and range. Shame they still nickel and dime you on options but could be an option for my next car depending on price vs Tesla.
I've just ordered a i4. 29 weeks. Going with the sport version which some decent options (blacked out window, vision and tech pack) I think this is the first bmw where I'm not so keen for m styling. The m makes the front of car look like any other bmw 3 4 petrol series. The simplistic sport front oozes class. (Like a T visor. This is just my opinion of course)
The single motor i4 is plenty quick for most people. On the Dragy, on back to back runs I got, 4.97-4.98 0-60mph w roll out, and 5.23-5.26 sec without. Both substantially quicker than BMW's conservative ratings.
The windsock on the bridge actually can tell you how much wind there is (If it is built to specifications). For each change of color from red to white or white to red, the speed indicated from the big end is 1,5 m/s, 3 m/s, 4,5 m/s, 6 m/s to fully extended 7,8 m/s or above.
Thanks Bjorn, I am very pleased with the result as I have just ordered this car. On my mixed test drive the consumption was 16,5 kWh/100km and I figured the range would be around 500 km in summer...
Thanks for the explanation for the BMW drivers for their turn signals. I know it's really new to them so it's nice to give a little help tutorial for them.
Good video! Next BMW to test should be the i4 eDrive35, the REAL poor man’s BMW lol ! Always great to watch your driving videos, beautiful Norwegian landscapes!
Please do the M50 again. IMHO It would be very interesting to see the difference with 2 motors/awd with comparable conditions. Also against EQE (non AMG versions)
If you use the configurator online theres also a difference in range if you go for the 19" performance pack. Salesman told me the other 19" does not fit if you go for the performance brakes. Dont know if true, however you can only get the 19" in Bjørns last m50 test, or 20" . Would be cool to see summer test with non performance brakes and 19" or 18 ". The performance pack actually reduces range in the configurator Even if you go for only 19" wheels. Non performance 19" wheels have better range according to the configurator. I have spent too many hours fidling with it 🙈
Thank you Bjorn. Didn't know that it was the turn signal and never used it like that. I always thought it was the "get out of my way" signal for the left lane on the autobahn.
I'm so stoked that you do the sound system tests, almost no other reviewers do these! Very much appreciated. The one thing that would interest me personally would be a range test with brisk, fast paced driving on a windy country road for example (lots of acceleration and braking). I do some highway driving, but am more worried that if I do some spirited driving on a country road I would run out of battery quicker! I guess it's harder to standardise this sort of test though?
@@larsandroid I think you can do a theoretic calculation on that. The range will of course be shorter, just as with a fossile fueled car, but say that the average consumption goes up 30% to 22-23 kWh/100 km you should still get at least 400 km in range. So - pedal in the metal, mate 😉👍

I recharged last night putting back in what i used no problem while i was asleep. great car, one is being ordered on the back of this
My parents ordered this. Good to see it is efficient at high speeds which will be good in Australia since you basically have to drive at 100km/h to get any where. They are looking forward to be able to get free fuel from the Sun. This efficiency will probably mean that they only need to charge once a week.
This is a great car value for money wise. In Netherlands it starts at 60k, way cheaper than Mercedes EQE and still in some areas better. Range and economy quite a bit better than M50, M50 is not simply AWD version of eDrive 40 - it lacks one of the motors and is lighter. Tesla Model 3 SR+ does not have more kit, just different things. And in many markets its more expensive to lease or finance than a BMW so that negates the MSRP difference
Finally a car that can compete with my M3 LR! Tomorrow I’ll have a test drive, but it will be the M50 version, I’m curious to see the handling. This will push competitors and Tesla to improve theirs cars, finally a great EV from BMW.
Head up display, adaptive dampers and electric seats are all in the option packs. One thing that I was surprised at when I bought mine was that full beam assist was a £150 option. The car tells me it’s an aquirable option. Good news is you get a 300 mile motorway range!
Hi Bjorn, why do you think "B" is better than "Adaptiv"? If you press the brake you only use recuperation. Only if you brake too hard, it will use the real breaks. And Adaptiv also means that you can "SEGELN" (rolling around) and save energy always if possible. Great car, great video! 👍🏻
I live in Canada and have an e40 on order, and I would like to read your opinions about the suitability of driving a RWD EV, and maybe specifically the BMW, in nordic winter conditions? Sincere thanks, Great video, as always!
It would be VERY interesting to do a Summer range test on the i4 M50. I feel it is the closest competition for the Tesla Model 3LR/P at this point. I think it has now taken the place of the Polestar 2.
Not sure what i4 you were reviewing, but the eDrive40 of which I took delivery on July 1st is every bit as feature rich as the M50, but with lots more range. The drive is superb, as are the fit and finish, and there's zero lag on my UI. Fully optioned, I paid less than $70k, and it arrived 8 weeks after I ordered it bespoke from Munich.
It would be nice to know how much it costs to service these BMW and Audi EVs. I am very curious to know how they are going to sustain their dealer business model with these type of cars.
Bmw is charging people 18 euros a month to give you seat heaters. Or something stupid like 419 euros for "unlimited access". In other words. Get ready for monthly subscriptions to turn stuff on you already have installed in the car. You paid for the hardware but you also pay to unlock to use the features. There is a large list of subscriptions you can get right now on BMWs website. That's where they will make their money up.
I have Model 3 LR RWD, it's really has better efficiency than AWD the same year, but less efficient than SR+. And comparable efficiency with new LR AWD 2022
@@bjornnyland True, but removing ~70 kg from the vehicle would do wonders to the dynamic of the car. The SR+ is still ~10% more efficient compared to the LR.
Hello, congratulations for the good work of information in this energy transition. I'm decided to opt for Ev's in the company and as a personal car, too bad the delivery time is out of control. Hugs from Portugal.
OMG BMW shows us again why they are the best car producer in this world!!!! Insane how they solved the problems and crashes caused by lane switchings and turnings - just by adding an signal to other drivers. sheer driving pleasure
I still don’t get it. You flip the little arm up and down to turn a light on the dashboard to tell you which way you are turning? I already know where I am going. I don’t have to tell the car to remind me which way I am going. I think it is BMW’s equivalent to the fart noise in the Teslas.
there's an option to make the indicators work. by default using the lever simply tells the lane tracking and blind spot detection you are going to veer across the road.
Damn it Bjørn, in my opinion you are one of the very best car reviewers I know… Keep up your style, humor and neutrality 💪🏼🙌 Btw, from a physics perspective weight is always a factor for rolling resistance, but it seems like that with heavier cars the tires can really make a difference for rolling resistance. then Hankooks are probably great here.
Bjørn, the % at destination you saw with the other BMWs were probably inside the route planning, as you were doing the 1000km challenge with both of them. That’s the only place I’ve seen „charge level at the destination“ in a BMW.
Bjørn that thing in the boot is the towing hook. Most probably there is a squar somewhere in the front and rear bumper you can remove and screw that thing into the metal beam. A lot of german cars has this type of towing hook.
thank you Bjorn for this video of my I 4 40. I agree with everything you said. except that the car is more efficient in the B mode. I normally drive in adaptive and change to B when I have to break. Coasting is basically done automatically and I like this mode much more, but everybody has a different opinion on this.
Great review, all that remains is to say that this i4 has fifth generation engines that do not use rare earths in their constitution. I think it's a solution that all brands should follow.
The little eyebolt you found in the trunk is to tow the vehicle, all BMWs and Audis have hooks in the front to screw that on, you wouldn't wanna tow this vehicle by chaining the wheels alone.
So the i4 RWD matches Model 3 LR AWD efficiency. Model 3 RWD is still ahead and would be the better comparision also with RWD. But still impressive result for the i4
You can't buy the i4 40 in the UK with technology plus pack which offering driving assistant professional (auto steer) you will not even have a blind spot monitoring or 360 camera. Only you can buy adaptive cruise control from connected drive for £600 😞 this stopped me from ordering the car
I seriously don't get why so many infitainment system lag as crazy as they do. At the end of the day it's just tablet hard and software (many are actually even running android). So why is it so hard to make is usable?
I guess they just use the cheapest hardware they can get away with. And I can imagine they use a lot of legacy software that has accumulated over the years instead of making a cut and writing everything from scratch.
@@KDR816 I drove it half a day. It started lagging when I switched from using Android Auto to just using Bluetooth Audio and the internal Nav to see what that's like. After that not only the Nav but the entire system (that worked fine before) became slower. Seems like it doesn't purge memory resources properly - software implemented by the best people the lowest bidder could get..
You should try the range test with the 17" wheels, tyres are 225/55/17 so quite a bit narrower than the 18" wheels. I recon you could get an extra 30 miles especially if you test it when the temperatures are in the low 20's
Also, with less electric gimicks switch on all the time, is less consumption. Myself, I will rather have less gimicks draining the battery, and have more range when driving. Good work, as always!
Owning an M50 for a month now, and its my first BMW, so really laughed at the turn signal info. Not like long time BMW owners that went: "what?? never noticed this feature???" 😂😂😂😂
@@bjornnyland Hi, so are you saying that coasting is not more efficient then B mode and that you even debunked it?? Great review btw, and yes, do also the M50 and IX 50 in summer to chech how much new BMW have winter/summer difference...
@@wermagst Yes, that is correct, if this is what Bjorn was reffering to then it does not make a difference. But in normal traffic, with braking etc, using coasting is more efficient, but again, difference is not huge...
lol, this is the funniest shit i read in a long time... what the heck men? You cant even navigate through screen from lagging. Like Bjorn said it suffers from LAL = "Legacy automaker lag"... its like downgrading from iphone to old nokia. Makes no sense, but ok...
I had it on my list also, until I saw the space in the back. It's so cramped, also no frunk and no space under the trunk. No option for me with 3 kids.
@@KDR816 The space under the trunk is a lot less. Also, you have this hump in the middle, so sitting in the back in the middle seat, no space for you feet. And no frunk! My colleague has an I4 and he said it himself when I made the comment when I was checking his car that the backseats were cramped, but no issue for him, as he has no kids.
What was the average speed of the trip, because if the efficiency is that high and the range that long averaging 70km/h is not good enough. It will also useful to know which percentage of the trip was open highway/national road and what speed was averaging at that point? Was it 120km/h or it was lower, because for me this range is unreal. I am struggling to get more than 400km of range in 10oC environment with 60/40 urban/city driving
Nice review test on the BMW i40. Very impressive with the range, however I am curious about 2023 BMW 330e drive range. Part of the reason we got BMW I40 sold out for this year in Australia. Hope that you can have the 330e range test.
Great first review and I’m looking forward to the 1k KM Challenge and that you test the M50 in the Summertime. I do love the i4 even its a bit tooooo fat
@@NO3V the budget for me can be higher for my next car - it should be best for long distances relaxed driving, don't think the i4 or M3 will work for me.
Really glad there is a review out there that doesn’t have all the options. Unfortunately I can only afford the poor man’s BMW, it’s good to see what you actually get from someone.
Between standard audio and Harman Kardon, there is an upgraded audio system which I used to have in my old 1-series. Fairly good but should not be mistaken with the standard audio which used to be poor in BMWs. Are you sure this one didn´t have it? You can´t tell from looking at the speakers as they don´t have any logo on them.
The standard audio in i4 is same as what was typically known as "HiFi" before, it's less speakers without HK branding and Logic7 DSP, but you still get an outboard amplifier. It's not the base-base that used to be available on 1 and 3 series which was just basic speakers running off deck power, those were pretty bad, each front channel for example would be 15 watts nominal but shared between under-seat bass driver, mid in the door, and the tweeter.
I doubt that B mode is the most effective mode in the i4 - you should try D in adaptive mode. With these speeds you should gain under 17 kWh at 130 km/h. Check it out...
There seems to be a typo in the Wheel front: 245/15-18 is written, but you read 245/45-18 at the beginning of the video. This efficiency is especially surprising because the Model 3 LR had even smaller tires.
the consumption is much higher than the Standard Model 3 (both rear wheel drive, so comparable) - so, why is it above it in the list? the Long Range version has a bit higher consumption, yes, but it‘s an all wheel drive car with great power…
Did something change in the charging curve since BMW released it to the public? Seems charging is much faster than it used to be. I saw a forum with a photo showing >200kW charging speed at 32%
I think this is the pick of the litter for this vehicle. In Canada it is super stripped down unless you pick a ~$13k option pkg and it has no TACC, but if you get past that it seems like a great car. I don't think there is really an apples to apples comparison of where this would line up next to Tesla. It's slow like the SR+, but has range like the LR. Guess it depends on what the kick down in eco mode is like because I personally like have full power available for rapid passes, or avoiding things.
Yes, but I think it makes a great case for itself: It's slightly less efficient than M3 SR+, but you'll get BMW driving dynamics, more comfort, more tech (head up, laserlights etc.), better noise insulation, and a hatchback tailgate.
@@patrickf2386 Except for the hatchback everything you mentioned is an expensive option over an expensive base price. Yes, even the "BMW driving dynamics" : the car comes standard on 17 inch 225/55 R17 wheels (!) with small brakes, no active suspension and without the "Variable Sportlenkung", while being 600kg heavier than the better equipped SR+ - what do you think handles better stock?
I might have missed it, but is there a reason, why Björn is not using most efficient mode i.e. Eco Pro. Seems to have in Comfort -mode. M50 has normal consumption with eco around 17,5 kwh with the same rims and tires as here.
@@lubder The tires is about the same width, we are talking about 1 cm. Means almost nothing. Weight has unbelievably little to say when we talk range and stable speed for because physics laws apply :-)
@@nickolassnielsen The tires on the BMW in this test were 245 front and 255 rear, so that definitely has an impact, even on aerodynamics. And 400kg more also affects rolling resistance, do the math. When you factor in aerodynamics, I don't see a significant efficiency advantage in the Tesla's powertrain, if any. I see lower consumption because it is lighter and more aerodynamic. But efficiency is not the same as consumption, even a truck can be very efficient, even though it consumes a lot.

Just wait for the Sunday drive test. Amazing
Great results from BMW, this is why Tesla should bring back the Model 3 LR RWD. We need a very efficient Model 3 for climates where AWD is not needed.
I have Model 3 LR RWD, it's really has better efficiency than AWD the same year, but less efficient than SR+. And comparable efficiency with new LR AWD 2022
excellent results! great efficiency
No need to. Tesla has known for 6 years how to make efficient AWD dual motor systems.
@@bjornnyland True, but removing ~70 kg from the vehicle would do wonders to the dynamic of the car. The SR+ is still ~10% more efficient compared to the LR.
The manual seats might just be on the test model or European models. Power seats are standard in USA.
It is too bad that BMW drivers here in the US don’t know about this feature. If only they watched Bjørn’s videos! 😀
The Ultimate Driving Machine - Blinkers Included 🤣
Bjorn I love your videos I get a lot of great info and I got some laughs on my 58 birthday
That turn signal is impressive 🤣
I still don’t get it. You flip the little arm up and down to turn a light on the dashboard to tell you which way you are turning? I already know where I am going. I don’t have to tell the car to remind me which way I am going. I think it is BMW’s equivalent to the fart noise in the Teslas.
Great video! Would be great to compare to i4 M50 in the summer
there's an option to make the indicators work. by default using the lever simply tells the lane tracking and blind spot detection you are going to veer across the road.
Damn it Bjørn, in my opinion you are one of the very best car reviewers I know… Keep up your style, humor and neutrality 💪🏼🙌
Btw, from a physics perspective weight is always a factor for rolling resistance, but it seems like that with heavier cars the tires can really make a difference for rolling resistance. then Hankooks are probably great here.
You're right about the weight factor, of course, but it's not very relevant with EVs because they are so efficients compare to ICEs. That's the point.
Could even be better with the 17'-Rims. Still very impressive!
Excellent video Bjorn - thanks
Bjørn, the % at destination you saw with the other BMWs were probably inside the route planning, as you were doing the 1000km challenge with both of them. That’s the only place I’ve seen „charge level at the destination“ in a BMW.
It's also on the dash in the BMW iX
Bjørn that thing in the boot is the towing hook. Most probably there is a squar somewhere in the front and rear bumper you can remove and screw that thing into the metal beam. A lot of german cars has this type of towing hook.
Super test, love your technical approach and presentation.
thank you Bjorn for this video of my I 4 40.
Awesome car. Waiting for 1000km test! Watching you from Ukraine 🇺🇦!
Please do a m50 summer test. As usual you always put out excellent videos
I pressed like for the turn signal tutorial :)
So the i4 RWD matches Model 3 LR AWD efficiency. Model 3 RWD is still ahead and would be the better comparision also with RWD. But still impressive result for the i4
10:32-11:10 made me laugh so hard😂😂
Not possible to choose. This was a press car.
Also, with less electric gimicks switch on all the time, is less consumption. Myself, I will rather have less gimicks draining the battery, and have more range when driving. Good work, as always!
I like to see a range test of the new megane e tech.
Owning an M50 for a month now, and its my first BMW, so really laughed at the turn signal info. Not like long time BMW owners that went: "what?? never noticed this feature???" 😂😂😂😂
Please please please do the iX50 summer range test. People are getting amazing numbers in North America.
Waiting for the i5 and hope to get one in this century
B mode is the least efficient but difference is insignificant compared with modes where coasting is prioritized
Incorrect. I have debunked this myth over and over again.
@@bjornnyland Hi, so are you saying that coasting is not more efficient then B mode and that you even debunked it?? Sorry, but not only in theory, also in practice, coasting is more efficient when DONE CORRECTLY. It is not a big difference, but to say it is not is just not correct.... Great review btw, and yes, do also the M50 and IX 50 in summer to chech how much new BMW have winter/summer difference...
@@niceman1661 When you drive long distances at a constant speed, it doesn't matter what mode you're in.
@@wermagst Yes, that is correct, if this is what Bjorn was reffering to then it does not make a difference. But in normal traffic, with braking etc, using coasting is more efficient, but again, difference is not huge...
Very impressive. I have it on my long term list for an Model 3 alternative.
lol, this is the funniest shit i read in a long time... what the heck men? You cant even navigate through screen from lagging. Like Bjorn said it suffers from LAL = "Legacy automaker lag"... its like downgrading from iphone to old nokia. Makes no sense, but ok...
I had it on my list also, until I saw the space in the back. It's so cramped, also no frunk and no space under the trunk. No option for me with 3 kids.
@@stefyyy1994 funniest shit is you don’t realize an iPad exists, it’s cheaper than a model3 and better built…
Super impressed!!
I do love the i4 even its a bit tooooo fat
this makes me incredibly curious about how the EQE 350 will do
in usa test those more than the tesla moodels
Is this the best EV Sedan in class? I only see the M3 as competition and the Polestar2. For me it would be the i4
Îf money has no value to you and you are a Bavarian Car Enthusiast, then it might just beat the Model 3 for you.
@@NO3V the budget for me can be higher for my next car - it should be best for long distances relaxed driving, don't think the i4 or M3 will work for me.
@@KDR816 yes will be good! :)
@@bavariancarenthusiast2722 If specced like in this video, M3 seems better. With higher trims, the comfort should be better in i4.
To be honest, manual seats would probably save a bit of weight and power draw, so better efficiency it is!
BMW: Turnsignal is included! Wow!
Really glad there is a review out there that doesn’t have all the options. Unfortunately I can only afford the poor man’s BMW, it’s good to see what you actually get from someone.
Now they have introduced the subscription service for seat heaters and adaptive cruise and etc. Just blows my mind who would pay for it...
That seems crazy. I would rather hack the seats than pay for that.
Turn signals as standard?! Someone is getting fired at the BMW sales department...
the left turn signal is not only standard it works automatically here in Germany on motorways, the right signal will be new for a lot of people ;-)
Is it fitted with indicators? Most bmw don’t seem to have working indicators here in Australia. Lol
Same here in Norway. Think they are out of indicator fluid 🤪
Absolute bull.
In Norway you ONLY have one upgrade - the Harman . Could be base is the improved one though
Hi Bjorn, Can you do a review of the Zeekr 001?
In a Tesla, if you see stupid UI like "since individual", then at least it might it might get fixed in an update. Will BMW do this?
I doubt that B mode is the most effective mode in the i4 - you should try D in adaptive mode. With these speeds you should gain under 17 kWh at 130 km/h. Check it out...
B vs D makes no difference driving at constant speed.
There seems to be a typo in the Wheel front: 245/15-18 is written, but you read 245/45-18 at the beginning of the video.
This efficiency is especially surprising because the Model 3 LR had even smaller tires.
And that the Model 3 has AWD, oh wait ....
It was a typo. Fixed now.
Have you winter tested any RWD vehicle s in snow?
the consumption is much higher than the Standard Model 3 (both rear wheel drive, so comparable) - so, why is it above it in the list? the Long Range version has a bit higher consumption, yes, but it‘s an all wheel drive car with great power…
The list is sorted by 90 km/h range.
Did something change in the charging curve since BMW released it to the public? Seems charging is much faster than it used to be. I saw a forum with a photo showing >200kW charging speed at 32%
What range do you expect from the Polestar 2 single-motor long range in the NOFANS test?
holy macaroni that's an excellent result
LOL the LAL!!! :-))
Not every BMW owner aware about the free turn signal!😂☝️
if you compare it to the SR+ I suppose its not quite there, but hella better than the m50 results
@@patrickf2386 in spreadsheet it is more efficient than model 3 or am I reading it wrong?
@@KDR816 thats awd vs rwd
@@KDR816 check m50 vs e40 then 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣. Also the rwd Tesla is in the same sheet from bjørn
I might have missed it, but is there a reason, why Björn is not using most efficient mode i.e. Eco Pro. Seems to have in Comfort -mode. M50 has normal consumption with eco around 17,5 kwh with the same rims and tires as here.
Does extra weight give extra regen on downhills to compensate for the extra consumption uphill?
Nice one papa Bjorn!
Awesome test!
Tesla model 3 SR 90 km/h 118wh/km vs bmw i4 ed40 134wh/km .. bmw not there jet. but vs tesla model 3 long range AWD it is almost the same.
The Model 3 SR weights almost 400kg less and has narrower tires, of course this has an effect even if some tell otherwise but physics does not lie.
@@lubder 235 VS 245 or 255.. Is not more than a few procent.
And see bjørns test about weight and range..

you can have heads up in the i4 and its adjustable. also maybe the viewing angle was wrong. (YT was not able to post my reply to Rob Latchford)
Please do one with the eDrive35
Oh the biener lover will love that screen lag so …normal
please test the eqe 350
Legacy automaker lag got me 😄
