Great review. I am putting down an order for the i4 eDrive35 for April 2023. Less power, but less expensive. Same color as yours (Skyscraper Grey, I think) and same color interiors. Looks awesome. Txs
Great review as always, especially like your perceptive 'wish list' suggestions that should improve the car under review. I think the 300lbs or so lower weight, compared to the M50, makes the i40 more agile and nimble in its handling, as well as improve its range. Nice car.
A clear demonstration of the difference between minimalism and simplicity. Minimalisn is when you reduce the number of tools needed to accomplish a task. Simplicity is the reduction of _actions_ needed to accomplish a task. In a Tesla, minimalism means you use the screen to open the glove box _and_ engage the one-pedal driving mode. Of course, you have to go through multiple pages on the screen to accomplish one task or even switch to the other task. The design of the i4 means you can activate or deactivate one-pedal driving by a simple flick of the gear selector. Now, the gear selector has no other function than to select gears (you certainly can't open the glove box with it). But it can do its job immediately and without fuss.
As always, your reviews are excellent and very throughout, exactly on point on every account and aspect. Thank you MotoMan for your excellent work! EDIT : great detail to attention i.e the green blob.

Right now on my list are an EQS, an iX and maybe this one? I like the hatchback form factor, very nice. Driving a 6GT right now with the largest Diesel engine and it gives me 1200km of range max. And yes it should look good and fun to drive.
6:00 - anybody notice the i4's actually have two different front clips on offer...? this version on the E40 looks like the original concept car (which I actually like better) but there's also the different front clip found on the Dual Motor i4 M50 (which is also what's fitted standard to all the ICE 440 models). now what's really going to "bake your noodle" is there are also lower trim Single Motor E40's that wear the higher trim M50/440's front clip. I guess depending on the option package chosen, the "Hofbrauhaus boys" swap that out for you. no reviewer has picked up on this yet but I also noticed the Single Motor E40 i went to see in person at a nearby dealer wore this front clip like the concept car. unfortunately didn't think to ask the salesmen about it at the time.
This would be the M Sport package, made available to E40's. You get the M50's ends, the steering wheel, and the 19" dual spoke wheels. The E40 M Sport doesn't get the winged mirrors of the M50, however, so that's one way to tell them apart.
Almost no needs AWD regardless of where you live. That's a convenience thing if you don't want to switch tires for the winter. I would expect a car enthusiast to know and stress that.

I quite like this car but up here in Canada it's 20k more than a Model 3 AWD. I get it, it's a lot nicer interior but I get why people balk at buying this over a Tesla.
In terms of handling, ride comfort, driving dynamics, road noise etc, which do you think is better. This or Lexus IS 350 F Sport RWD version? I drove the lexus it was very good, wondering how it compares to this one
The m50 doesnt allow you to drift in corners and is less fun to drive as it limits the power when steering in corners. The edrive 40 however lets you diable traction and basically floor it creating wheelspin on the back axle. Its power isnt limited in the corners.
Also the m50 has launch control. It does get boring to be the fastest on the road and below 150 km /h you’re basically leaving everyone behind that wants to drag race you.
The M50 is not a true AWD, as it does not engage the front wheels constantly. The front motor kicks in on demand. This means that if you're not in the mood to drive like a maniac all the time, the front motor of the M50 will be dead weight for a not insignificant portion of the driving regime as it will cruise on the rear motor in order to conserve charge (honest question: Would the front wheels ever engage if the M50 is set to Eco mode?) Just sayin'-- if you got it, then _use_ it. On the other hand, the E40 does just fine without that extra weight.
Exactly this. By my experience you cant use the full potential of all the wheels when cornering as the power gets limited to about 30%. Even with traction off its a rather disappointing experience to try and drift this car.
please stop calling these M cars. they are non m cars with the M sport badge. You can get even the lowest tier BMW's with some kind of M sport package. Still not an M car.

I opted for the longer range of the e40 vs the extra power+ of the m50. 335 hp is good enough for this og. :)
I appreciate how BMW is attempting to make driving dynamics a priority rather than just 0 to 60 acceleration numbers.
Electrics seem to be about same 0-60 and top speeds are dropping. Only handling is left it seems.
