It's cool watching these people just stand or sit and concentrate on their music instead of trying to be Rock Stars. And theirs was and is brilliant music.
Beautiful as the moon:-) Saw them in huddersfield many years ago and then acosted Fred Frith to do the most beautiful solo sesssion in the old Manor house in bretton, West Yorkshire. memories are made of this.
Wow - I cannot disagree more - Fred's work in the 80s and beyond brings me to tars. His connection with music, his connection with sound, the depth of his improvisation is, to me, some of the finest example of musicality I have ever heard. Full stop. Makes me cry.
one of the best bands from the Canterbury music. Real musicians, top to bottom. watched Dagmar Krause in Porto, Portugal, maybe 25 years ago. She was brilliant.
Now is the time to begin to determine directions, refuse to admit the existence of destiny's rule. We shall seize from all heroes and merchants our labour, our lives, and our practice of history : this, our choice, defines the truth of all that we do.
Dare to take sides in the fight for freedom that is common cause let us all be as strong and as resolute. We're in the midst of a universe turning in turmoil; of classes and armies of thought making war - their contradictions clash and echo through time.
Funny you should say that! After posting my comment I went to Fred's website and wrote basically the same thing to him and he replied pretty quickly (as you might imagine), suggesting I do the same--even promising to forward me some links to some of his own personal favorites (he's a really nice man and always was in my admittedly very limited interactions w him at his shows in the early 80s). I appreciate your comment, as well as all the sublime music(s) you've been posting. Vive La France!
I read somewhere that Tim Hodgkinson's lyrics for this were an afterthought, and that not everyone in the band was keen on the overt socialist propaganda. Personally I love it, and come back to this piece either on the original vinyl or here on RUclips regularly.
Now is the time to begin to go forward - advance from despair, the darkness of solitary men - who are chained in a market they cannot control - in the name of a freedom that hangs like a pall on our cities. And their towers of silence we shall destroy.
In this particular song... unclejunglebass, I agree with you. Not because of the vocal but the lyrics however. They always distract me from enjoying the song.
How apt are the lyrics of this given the current times: "advance from despair, the darkness of solitary men - who are chained in a market they cannot control" .. "enslaved by the power of capital's kings who reduce them to coinage and hollow exchange in the struggle to hold us"
Wow.....I am the inverse of dantean. I was also seeing Frith downtown with Zorn et al in the same years and can't stand the pretentious precious "art" nonsense and think his Free and Noise work some of the best music ever made. It's all one big song dan my man....

that's as ignorant a statement as his. i've played with frith, & i can attest to the fact that the man is quite capable of straddling both universes here. to call this piece "pretentious art nonsense" only denigrates the food that fed his forays into "freedom & noisiness." this "1 long toon" wends it's way through all of it's movements with purpose, tension played against release, & evolves in a storybook fashion; hardly abacab. the passion may be deafening, but pretentious? i don't think so...
ron grainer? you don't write or compose music, do you... or else you're not very good because you are obviously clueless. ron grainer, please, it's not even funny as a joke. the coffee social table-ism is another matter, there you MIGHT have a point. that could go either way. but the music is gorgeous.
I remember playing this on the family stereo one afternoon in the 70's and my Mum commenting that it was a 'nice tune'.....

Now's the time !

LOL female version of Peter Hammill FTW
The movie "Idiocracy" was supposed to be comedy, but it doesn't take much extrapolation to see all that coming true in America.
@drumgit : it is, indeed :)
Try and relax.

Where is there a quote from RG and from which piece?
I partially agree with you. But try anyway to listen to Frith's "Clearing", which prooves that you can have both soul and scritch-scratch avant-garde.
ce groupe possède une belle expression entre le prog rock et la zeuhl de VDGG a MAGMA

@MrMeddled Indeed, if you look at the "Terrible as an army with banners" video you'll see another keyboardist ;)
@unclejunglebass eh nevermind... i guess its dagmar's just an acquired taste. ill give it some time.

The keyboardist is prettier as woman than the German singer xdd
they shoulda skipped the vocals
