Cutler and Frith are definitely the most fun to watch at this show. Cutler because of the uniquely animated yet elegant way he plays the drums and Frith because he’s playing a different instrument every time the camera is on him.
@@iamdamosuzuki_ I wish the camera was on Frith more though. Especially on that incredible guitar section at the crescendo outro section of Living In the Heart of the Beast. Most of the time the camera seems to be focused on Krause or Cutler…not surprising as they’re also the ones making the most stank faces. Hi Damo
IMHO Henry Cow is not only the best band in the history of progressive rock but quite possibly the culmination of the whole avant rock thing. I simply love this guys, true 'musical heroes' for me, alongside Glenn Branca, Anton Webern, Captain Beefheart, Anthony Braxton and Orthrelm. Well, in this concert recorded in Switzerland (Vevey) in 1976, with splendid audio and image quality, we have the british formation in its intermediate period, where to the band's initial sonic blend (compositional exercises inspired by the Second Viennese School + free jazz infused improvisations + electroacoustic experiments) is added the anarchic spirit of the bretchian expressionist cabaret. Simply essential, perless and timeless stuff.
Chris Cutler is self-taught. Everything about the way he plays the drums is "wrong." That doesn't make him a good drummer or a bad drummer necessarily, but it does make his style totally unique and unmistakable, and in my opinion it's a perfect fit for Henry Cow.
When I first started getting really into Prog rock, I wrote off Henry Cow as annoying and too avant garde and experimental for my liking. Now I think I’ve finally grown pretentious and insufferable enough to enjoy this incredible art.
That opening tune has some of the wickedest most scary beautiful chord changes I've heard in a long long time. To me, a new band to check out, I can tell there some unique musical journeys awaiting me.
It's interesting to see them in this formation. Founding member and bassist John Greaves had recently departed from the group. Georgie Born was pretty new and struggling to fit in. Dagmar Krause would break down not much later, then leave the band. A lot of internal conflict happening in the band's day-to-day. But when they were playing together, that was all that mattered.
I saw them live in 1974 supporting faust at bham town hall...fred frith said that his grandmother in kingstanding keeps on talking to his grandad whod already been dead for ten years.
@@sex6cult9revolution I’ve heard some of them. Solos, Gravity, Speechless and Cheap At Half Price. I’m also a big fan of some other bands he’s been in like At Bears (of course), Massacre, Skeleton Crew and Naked City
Hi, I'm born in Vevey in 1964, I still live there, I have play Progressiv rock since 1979 with my band Deyss listening King Crimson, Gentle Giant, Yes Genesis and all others and I only heard the name of Henry cow for the 1st time only today??? I cannot believe, how it's possible..is this band so underrated or I was on the moon the last 50th years??? ++ Now I found this footage made in my country what a coincidence...someone can tell me where in Vevey this has been recorded? Thanks Joe
Henry Cow's been a fave of mine since college and this is a superlative concert. But the cinematography is kind of insufferable. I can deal with the claustrophobic closeups and incessant slow pans, but WTF with the interpolated stills and slo-mo's? I mean, it's a live concert, for crying out loud. The music's avant-garde enough, thanks ;)

Though adoring this band since discovering them in the late 70's, I DO find their political side renders the experience a little like listening to Wagner.
Thanks, Victor

The whole band was incredible. Chris Cutler was an amazing drummer that played with both rhythmic and visual style.
His totally unnecessary movements annoy and distract me.

This music is dense enough to listen multiple times and find new things within each time, almost impossible to soak everything in with one go

they really are the utter pinnacle of prog, maybe of music. but you have to climb the mountain first before you can walk on the peak
Pretty much the same 😀

henry cow forever
Just discovered Henry Cow.
Really like them.
Many thanks for posting this.

Just got this DVD in the Henry Cow "Cow Box Redux". Great Band !
John Edwards : CHRIS IS ONE OF THE GREATEST DRUMMERS...EVER!! DO NOT LOOK AT HIM...JUST LISTEN!!! ENJOY THESE GIANTS OF MUSIC!!
surreal progressive avant jazz rock, democratic music
Alongside projects like Faust, VdGG and Beefheart, these guys made some of the best experimental rock in the modern era.
And Magma
@@rubretz7800 They are good but I like their jazz fusion stuff better. With the exception of Live/Hhaï that one is incredible.

Premiere vocalist! Henry Cow...a total delight.
Dagmar Krause is a mermaid, a goddess 🧚🧜♀
ChrisCutler has got to be the most entertaining drummer ever.
Ikr? It’s like he’s painting with his drums
Imagine hiring this band for a wedding or a christening 😂
christening the next karl marx reincarnation
I swear every time the Camera pans to Frith he’s playing a different instrument lol. Dude is a unit
People use the word "genius" loosely, but Frith is definitely one. Are you familiar with his solo work? Dude is a genius for real.

Excellent stuff man! Been listening for years and this is the first time I have seen them live.
Excellent! Loving it on the course of this terrible pandemic year!
Daring, ferocious, tender, beautiful, unsettling, exciting, melancholic, uplifting, awe inspiring, and boiling with energy. What more do yiz want?
What more countless yet fitting adjectives could be used to describe this performance 😂
Ενώ αγαπώ τον John Greaves, εδώ η Georgie Born είναι υπέροχη. Γαμάει όπως λέει ο λαός.

When they invent time travel I'm going to a Henry Cow gig!🐄
That bit when the bassoon and sax kick in @4:39 ... kicks me in the heart every time
just amazing. I love
Meravigliosa Dagmar!
All to few bands include a Bassoon
All too few bands are worthy of a bassoon.

Though adoring this band since discovering them in the late 70's, I DO find their political side renders the experience a little like listening to Wagner.
Because?
their politics were nothing like Wagners
Henry Cow didn’t hate persecuted groups
Their politics are like a cherry on top
