The version on the first side of Henry Cow Concerts I think is the definitive one (minus the multitracked atonal pianos). Tim Hodgkinson's organ line over the vamp is gorgeous and completely cogent atonality, with Fred shifting to a compressed guitar lead in counterpoint. John's fuzz bass on the vamp for the C section finale is blistering.

Came here from Reddit. Three decades ago, I was encouraged to listen to Henry Cow, but I never got around to it. Thanks for being my guide!

That damn groove in 7/4 with the second bar a 8th note shorter. I had such trouble figuring that rhythm out back in the day. Its such a damn great groove though, god damn. Especially in the live version, where they really ham it in and Cutler goes crazy on the drums.

Holy f#$@ Batman, that's impressive. Like how you squeezed Magma in there. Frith is up there with Fripp for me. Your explanation is almost akin the the BBC shipping forecast. Neat.

Living In the Heart of the Beast is one of the greatest masterpieces of RIO / avant prog. Total earworm, every section singable and memorable. Great lyrics, too.

nailed it addy's homeplate. this music means so much to me, and it's great to see how practical its theory is in execution, it all Makes Sense and goes deeper and deeper. a less theory-minded individual would have a difficult time pulling this kind of writing off. myself very much included.

Henry Cow are usually categized as a subgenre of progressive music, often known as Avant-prog. Hell, they may be the band that founded the subgenre.
Other bands in the same subgenre, are:
    Univers Zero
    Thinking Plague
    Art Zoyd
    Aksak Maboul
    Miriodor
    Samla Mammas Manna
    Yugen
    And otheres...

Hi. Thank you so much for your video on what is one of Henry Cow's finest achievements on record. In all truth, I would have dearly loved to hear you attempting the free form overdubbed piano music played by Fred Frith just before the song's finale. I understand that would have been very difficult but it would have been great to my ears to have heard some very rough attempts at it.
I note that Henry Cow themselves never performed this free form piece live, but instead inserted three or four other songs to make a suite of different musics as a cohesive entity. That was good but even Fred Frith would play different free form guitar solos to his composition "Ruins" whenever that piece was played, which was a great many times.
Thanks once again and I would love to see your response to this, if you have the time and inclination.
    Sincerely, Peter.

Thanks for your message Peter! Haha, yes, It would have opened another can of worms to get into that section as it does contain it's own thematic material, almost like a tone row? There were so many aspects of this piece/album that I wanted to touch on, including the lyrics, I had to eventually dwindle it down as to not make this video excessively long. Thanks again, I'm glad you enjoyed.

Song of Solomon - Chapter 6
6:4 Thou art beautiful, O my love, as Tirzah, comely as Jerusalem,
terrible as an army with banners.
6:5 Turn away thine eyes from me, for they have overcome me: thy hair
is as a flock of goats that appear from Gilead.
6:6 Thy teeth are as a flock of sheep which go up from the washing,
whereof every one beareth twins, and there is not one barren among
    them.
6:7 As a piece of a pomegranate are thy temples within thy locks.
6:8 There are threescore queens, and fourscore concubines, and virgins
    without number.
6:9 My dove, my undefiled is but one; she is the only one of her
mother, she is the choice one of her that bare her. The daughters saw
her, and blessed her; yea, the queens and the concubines, and they
    praised her.
6:10 Who is she that looketh forth as the morning, fair as the moon,
clear as the sun, and terrible as an army with banners?

Absolutely! I did my best to notate what I heard on the original mix and there's no way I got it all 100%. I'll have to check it out. Such dense music! I'm just glad we've got the conversation going, there's so little out there on this band's harmonic innovations.
