Blimey, never seen this before. Loved Henry Cow from '73. Saw them a few times too. Last time in Huddersfield for the memorial. Most underrated band of my lifetime!
(7:42) "you have 2 choices. You trust no one and you remain an outsider, or you take a chance to see what it's like. For a long time, we didn't want to compromise. And we didn't." Q: "How did you make a living" (laughs) a:"We didn't. We were starving." "How did we live? Just about." I apologize, that's the best I can do.
There will be no R/R hall of fame for this lot...Pink Floyd and Zappa close as we can get...Henry Cow...love me some Frith...a class of their own...they are the epitome of Virgin records
I was led to this video through a footnote in the recently published book Henry Cow: The World Is a Problem--an interesting read for Cow fans, as well as nearly anyone who's interested in avant music and related philosophies.
Got my copy of the book with my order of the new box set. So far Ive only read the introductory part. I look forward to further reading when I have the time
Siempre vuelvo a este video, porque realmente henry cow es pura magia, increible lo hermoso de la complejidad de las composiciones... no hay nada hoy en dia que se compare a esto o a frank zappa...
Fascinating that such document exists. Only criticism: Geoff Leigh does not feature in a single scene playing his instruments on this video. Proof that 40 years ago the guys with camera were too stoned!
Beginning : "Henry Cow is recording a disc, their first one after years of existence. There is some tension in the air, cos each of the 5 musicians have a strong character, and it doesn't pass smoothly." interview (I resume) q:Why playing for so long without doing a record ? a:we tried before, we decided against, we didn't for 1 year and half and then we did. // in business record, it can be very bad but maybe virgin is different. /(to be continued)
""Henry Cow is recording a disc, their first one after years of existence." An odd thing to say as this purportedly from November '73, Leg End was already recorded. This is the Greasy Truckers' session, as indicated by the snatch of Sweet Heart of Mine just before the interview segment.
Yes, it is the Manor. HC went on last at the Greasy Trucker's Dingwall's Dancehall show, and only got in a ten minute set before closing so they went into the Manor for a day and laid down what became their side of the compilation.

LE groupe de progressive (avec VdGG, bien sûr). Ce type de démarche semble faire cruellement défaut actuellement. Ce genre de créativité ce retrouve peut-être dans certains groupes de metal prog. En tous cas, merci pour le post (déjà ancien)
they look like fender precision bass pickups - on a hand made pick guard maybe? Fred knows. This vid doesn't show his 335 with the extra pickup at the 'other' end of the neck. I was lucky to see 3 jams he had in/around Carnaby St with Lol Coxhill. I wish that had been recorded.
Ah you might know this... being nine years after you made the comment. Turn on captions (CC) and click settings (the cog) and select Subtitles and from there you can choose to auto translate to English.
One of the most under appreciated and over looked bands in music history, genius band!
+Neuro Demonio you're rignt. They just are underknown :) Don't forget Univers Zero.
Nah, I don't think so. They're pretty much the poster child of avant-rock/avant-prog. They are pretty known for how extreme their music is.
Unfortunately that genius leaves many people behind. Like me for example. I can appreciate the musicanship, but it's too caotic for my own tastes.

I love this music, so creative... Sometimes it looks like Soft Machine

A nice early version of "Half Asleep, Half Awake" from their second album.
I've loved Henry Cow since I was 18 years old. I still ask: "How in the fuck do those kids play like that?"
This video is a true gem.
This is terrific! Henry Cow at the peak of their creative powers.
Amazing ! Henry Cow - the greatest. Legend changed my life - Unrest - changed it further . great upload - that you . peace x

Fascinating! My favorite Henry Cow track.

What a band they were 😄! (Saw them live back in -75 in Stockholm:)
Henry Cow at their most Canterbury!
I think this is brilliant on so many levels,

Edmund Hõbe he might have been in an isolation booth and not in the same room as the other guys?
Maybe that’s why he left the group 😂
Such intimacy with my heroes - gratefully
received.
thanks George!
Musica de otro planeta....!!!!
The Studio is the manor outside Oxford

Excellent! Thanks for uploading.
7:49 Geoff Leigh is at the right. He wasn't captured playing the saxophone though but he's founded in an interview part...

Люблю Van Der Graaf Generator.

l'INA possède des perles ! Je ne connaissais pas celle-ci.
Sweet.
This is so great! What are the pickups on Fred’s guitar??
Not sure but he did believe in alternative pickups on his guitars.

@@NickGodwin whew lucky you! Cambridge in the house!
Chris Cutler might be the best drummer I've ever heard, along with Jaki Liebezeit, but even then, I prefer Cutler's more cerebral and less funky style
That's Richard Branson!
wow
Was that first voice, Tom Newman? Sounds like him.
oh my god
Who is on bass? Is that John Greaves? His voice sounds alot like the National Health singer on "Binoculars"
Sure is! One of my bass heroes, Mr. Greaves!
what song are they playing here? i really like this one.
It’s Half Asleep/Half Awake from Unrest.
Where is Geoff? He's invisible!
these are the Unrest sessions... he was out by then
@@gokhanaya That's him with Fred Frith at 5:48
like a pink floyd that are actually really good
Who is playing soprano sax on this? We don't get to see anyone on reeds.
Geoff Leigh
Any chance of an English translation of the interview at the end, somebody?

brilliant audio but the video is frustrating - pull back pull back give us some context show the band show the playing for heaven's sake
0:15 is that Tom Newman?
:-)
I think that's him at 4:52.
me too yes it must be him.... this was filmed inside the Manor, Oldfield had just been there to record TB
@@Amsterdamagesoup funny enough, most (if not all) of Henry Cow played on TB.
