    What a line-up! Dagmar Krause, Fred Frith, Tim Hodgkinson, Chris Cutler, Lindsay Cooper and Georgie Born... Few bands have so many talented musicians.

      We must be kindred spirits. I couldn’t talk about RIO with my punk friends and I would be positively FLAYED ALIVE if I brought any punk band into conversation with my “prog” friends. The one band that shut everyone up was Univers Zero Lol those were the days

    Saw them live in Reading University library in 1974. Best concert ever I saw. Won't go into details but magical ad riveting ...

      @@laredolenny682 The small room was lit only by loads of candles and as the set drew to a close the candles were extinguished one by one until the music stopped and the room was in darkness and silence. Very powerful.

      @@michaelbanks7157 WOW! What genius. I've seen many a stage act going on, BUT, that must've outdone them all. I never got to see them Live, unfortunately. I started listening to them back in 1976 or 77.I found out about them by accident. I was talking to a Buddy about Fripp. And he was getting pissed, saying I must be saying his name wrong. That it was Frith. Well, we were both surprised to get to learn more about Music and who is who. Hey Man, Be well. Peace.

      @@growskull - Right? He was a Boy Genious, for real. Artist, Musician, and Poet. He, unfortunately, offed himself in the 1980s. Well, I did introduce him to Crimson and he became a solid Fan. Really nice guy.
      I have one of his paintings. Anyhow, hope all is well with you. I'll see you in the afterlife.

    I've loved Henry Cow since their first album, just lately I can't get enough of them! If there's any video of the early lineup with Geoff Leigh I would love to see it.

      There is an interview on french tv from 1973, but you can't hear what they're saying because they overdubbed french translations of what they're saying over their voices

    I mention Gentle Giant because those band members were also multi-instrumentalists & I mention (Larks Tongues era) King Crimson because they likewise played astonishing improv as well as well rehearsed rock tunes which ran the gamut from sublime to thunderous. Henry Cow enjoyed rare company & esteemed musical colleagues.

    Notare che il difficilissimo brano ERK GAH DAGMAR KRAUSE lo esegue senza spartito e testo davanti bravissima straordinaria !!!!! Nonostante la loro proposta difficile al contempo ho sempre trovato gli HENRY COW un grande , grandissimo gruppo e molto affascinante il loro sound !!!!!!!

      Farfisa. They couldn't afford a Mellotron. Or a Hammond. Or a Moog. Or anything more than a beat-up Farfisa, an even more beat-up upright piano, and a junk shop's worth of musical odds and ends. Plus a PA, a bus, and a truck.
      And they still made great music with what they had.

    Allora qualcuno ha detto che gli HENRY COW non potevano permettersi un Mellotron, perché di seconda o terza mano usata non lo potevano rimediare??? Non sarà che invece sono state scelte effettuate dalla band e basta per ottenere un certo tipo di SOUND??? Infatti quando alcuni di loro FRED FRITH, CHRIS CUTLER e DAGMAR KRAUSE misero su gli ART BEARS il Mellotron lo utilizzarono andatevi ad ascoltare il secondo album WINTER SONGS ed il terzo THE WORLD AS IS IT TODAY dove FRED FRITH oltre al violino viola e Xilofono e le chitarre elettriche e acustiche suona anche le tastiere e oltre all'organo credo Hammond pianoforte piano elettrico , harmonium vi è anche il Mellotron .

      ROCK music is based on REPETITION (aka Sex, which is what the term "rock and roll" meant!) (rock and rolling in bed)... and is the OPPOSITE of classical or jazz in that regard.
      And just like you can't "get" a Symphony on the first (or 20th) listen (because there's TOO MUCH going on, vs Simply Pop Songs).... Henry Cow is like that.
      If you were to listen to this video 15 times, you'd fall in love with it. (The main problem is that most of us, listening to it once, think it's just discordant and aimless. But that's not accurate.)

      TELL US HOW (and why) YOU WISH EVERY ROAD, STREET, HIGHWAY, AND SIDEWALK WERE CAPITALISM: Privately-owned and FOR-profit, with Toll Booths every mile or so. And the owners of these roads COULD CHARGE YOU WHATEVER YOU WILL PAY (to get to work etc)!!!
      (Don't like it? BUILD YOUR OWN ROADS!)

      they admitted they were LYING --- they LOVED Pink Floyd etc!

      c)
      the Sex Pistols were NOT Punk. HENRY COW IS PUNK. (Art-punk. REBELLIOUS IN MANY WAYS.) The SPs were NOT rebellious. THEY WERE DOING STRAIGHT, CLICHE POP SONGS, but with a snarl. That's it. Super-ANTI-rebellion.

I never understood how a simplified sloppy played version of hard-rock (which punk was musically) could have been seen as something non-conventional or rebellious. It was something the stupid audiences and critics from that time could comprehend.

      @@iamdamosuzuki_ I believe you immediately. But that was mainly caused by the fact that more sophisticated elements which were already used in progressive rock and first were considered as taboo in punk were allowed again in some postpunk groups.

      Just for clarity's sake, I'm not a huge fan of the Sex Pistols though I do appreciate them. I'm also not a huge fan of progressive rock or avant garde stuff either, but I do listen to some of both. According to my music critic friends, Henry Cow was one of the main roots of the speed metal/polka fusion scene in Godthaab back in the 90s.

      (Same with classical. Ya need to listen to a symphony over and over to digest it all, unlike pop or rock music, which is simple and immediately understandable.)
