The MK4 R32 is probably the best looking Golf!
I loved my Mk4.
I have a 2003 1.8t as my first car and I can honestly say, for a car with 100,000 miles on it, the interior looks almost new. Volkswagens are made to last a long time.
I think MK3 and2 are the best
I had a 1.8T mk4 as my first car. I'd agree its not as fun and tossable as the other generations. It leaned more towards the luxury side of things. Mine had a nice black leather interior, sunroof, interior panels felt solid, and the turbo engine had a good surge of torque.
I love the Golf mk4, might be my favourite Golf of all time.
The Mk4 for me was all about the special editions and then the R32. In the US the GTI 337 followed by the 20th Anniversary were the ones to have.
Mk3 gti's are getting more and more rare. Not to mention the 20 years anniversary edition! (Only about 1000 with the 16v engine were made)
i believe it was only 250 with the 16v made, 750 8v's iirc
The lego and plug analogy was spot on! If you're not on top gear next series i will be highly disappointed mate great work 👍👍
I really wish you could've driven my 04 GTI. 180 HP 1.8T, 5-speed, stripper model with no options but the 17" rims weighed in at 2750 lbs. with full interior and half a tank. I comprehensively replaced engine and suspension and subframe and rear axle mounts throughout the car with one step stiffer, combined with a mild lowering spring and shock (chosen for their combination of appropriate stiffness for ride height, while also keeping the ride height near the stock operating point, which is beneficial for the camber curve), michelin pilot super sports, TT brakes, mild shifter upgrades, and a stock engine. It was a really capable everyday, backday, and trackday car, and while it doesn't make me giggle like my miata does, I had TONS of fun in it for twelve years (and it was my only car, and was consistently great at that)
MkIVs are super quality cars underneath. The factory did fail to tune them right for enthusiasts. But the factory parts bin is huge and has lots of fun toys, the aftermarket is huge and quite affordable, the chassis is robust and good against rust and has fundamental geometries that work for performance surprisingly well while also being pretty light by modern standards. They're the right-sized sorta car as well. I love a good MkIV. They get better from stock when you have a clue on what you're doing.
They may not be the best, but I love my mk3 and mk4
Great to see Alex back, get him permanently, channel hasn’t been the same since he left!
where'd he go?
Some good engines in the MK3 (ABF and VR6) .. shame about the rest of the car!
Mark IV is the best Golf design of all generations in my opinion.
(necro) Totaly agree. Seems to be waaaaay more appreciated in the US.
Still love my first car, 1997 MK3 1.6 ;)
Me too, except mine was a 2.0, still loved it though
I agree that stock the GTI wasn’t the greatest GTI produced. It lacked a revised chassis, a bit of sporty trim and sound but the 1.8 T engine is a great engine. With the Mk4 you need to invest in a bigger turbo, intercooler, the R32 front bumper and suspension components. That the Mk4 becomes epic
Golf 4 GTI. Are beautiful the best of all the golf !!!!
I just found my elementary-school era hoodie with a big orange riced-out Mk4 Golf on the front of it 2 days ago.
Shame it doesn't perform super well.
But then came the Golf R32
I wish you make one about the nissan 200sx s13/14/15. Would be a good fit for a series like this.
Mk4 was the only Golf to perfectly blend classic Golf characteristics and styling and make it modern. It’s a simple Gold but extremely modern a very good car
My first car was 16v mk3, it was very nice car and plenty fast.
lovely ending music... My MK6 GTI hopes to be one of the best.
I prefer the mk4 over the mk3.
Sure its not a "true GTI" but I still love the scream from my 24v vr6. That and with a bit of suspension/chassis upgrades and they can handle pretty well too. But true, it's not in the same ethos as the mk1
Not really as in-depth of a review to warrant a 5 part video series, is it?
no vr6 mention? i had both mk3 and mk4
VR6 Highline was the best Mk3....loud as fuck, good handling, comfy, very post-modern....and had that lovely aerodynamic line round the bodywork on the wings that sadly went missing on the MK4's & MK5's and didn't return til the MK6 & Mk7. That being said MK4-wise, if not a V6 4Motion, then if it were a turbo it had to be the AUQ'd KO3S Anniversary or the R32....
Lego over a plug 😂
Faisal Rahman it's true tho, stepping on plugs is way more painful... but Lego did break my phone camera glass, so...
Either way, you're doomed
The mk4 gti is a pd 150
Mk3GTI❤ amazing daily hatch.fun to drive too
Some lovely kits for the Mk4 though!
I would to burn the rub to the rims with Mk1 as is the lightest from the rest of newer tanks . Sbarro converted in the 1st GTI 330 HP engine from Porsche . Super rare Pro Chaser.
At least the mk3 gti looked good. Mk4 looked the same as normal one
Then they made the mk 5 ugly
That's why you buy the Gold VR6 in the mk3 or the Golf V6 or even better a Golf R32 in the mk4
mk2 the best looking in my opinion
They should have put the 225 bhp 1.8 turbo in the mk4
Mk2 and Mk4
UK didn't get the VR6?
VR6 was not a GTI, that’s why.
The VR6 version was called the Golf R32, not the Golf GTi.
Ismazara there was also vr6 2.8l not only the r32.
That's what I was wondering.
VR6 came in GTI's in MK3's and MK4's in the U.S. MK4 even got a 24 valve.
Mk4 vr6 is a little bit more fun stock at least in my opinion but it still makes me wish it had more power every time i drive it
in these days of speed cameras and traffic calming bumps, performance doesn't matter, Mk1/2/3/4 all great cars
But either of those with the vr6 option was definitely a gti
Golf mk4 V5 2.3 AQN 170hp best Golf around
Mk1 and mk2 that’s it
MK2
The Mk3 was all about the VR6 and that carried into the Mk4 but the 1.8T was far more popular. If you’re driving a Mk3 GTI without the VR6 you have the wrong car.
The gti gets screentime everywere even though a lot of these generations are overrated.
I barely see these Type of videos about Peugeots renaults Toyotas Hondas (not only the Type R's. There are also sir's and vti's in europ wich are also quicker then thier vw counterparts)
But the gti gets allways the Cake in form of attention. The mk1 gti (arguable) "invented" or more like, made the hot hatch popular nur there are so much interesting alternatives out there. They deserve some love as well.
Kevin Clanton im just saying other manufacturers have build also very, partialy more capable cars that deserve attention as well. Especially when the mk3 and mk4 were on sale there were so much more and better options.
Just waiting to hear what he has to say about the mk6 lmao
I liked this n i have a mk4 gti it wieghs less than a tonne so 🤙 problem solved
For me the best gti's are..
MK5 Edition 30
MK2 G60
MK4 TDI GTI
MK7 GTI 230+HP
MK4 GTI V5 170HP
Got meself a Golf mk4 v5 2.3 170hp, very nice hothatch with an addicting tune
Get in a vr6 and get back to me.
aw geez, if he's saying this sort of stuff about a mk4, I wonder what he has to say about the mk5?
The A2 Gti is better than the A3.
mk3 all day imo. they look better and weigh less simple as that. mk4 is my least favorite of all
@P4P Tv mk4 is worse, at least the mk3 has a nice arse. the mk4 isnt pretty, but its not ugly either, its just bland.
I've had both. They were shit. hahaha
Who fucking cares. The mk4 is a tank
No mention of the MK III VR6. Dislike.
Best=mk2 Worst=mk4
mk4 drove like shit. Looked good though.
Matthew Bailey mine drives great.
And mine
@P4P Tv nope, i had a mk4 gti then switched to the mk5 gti. night and day.
I miss Alex. Motor1 is rubbish and is a waste of Alex talent
No one likes the mk3
Rubbish;!!!!!!!×
Mk1, 2, 3 are a load of rubbish. Mk4s and the best and mk7s are nice and mk5/6 are rubbish aswell.
These really are bad cars. You never even see them on the road anymore because they're all in junkyards.
Come to Europe, mark IVs everywhere.
Vw has developed a reputation for being unreliable and expensive to maintain in the U.S.
It's because Americans can't treat their cars right, also why Toyota is so popular there, care free motoring but oh so dull.
It has nothing to do with people treating their cars right and everything to do with poor build quality. Even if the engine in a VW is fine they will start to have all kinds of strange electrical issues. You think that Toyota's are boring and that's ok because its just your opinion at the end of the day. In my opinion VWs are really dull and I honestly dont know what people see in them. It is a known fact that VWs are among the least reliable and expensive to maintain cars on the market.
But how come we never get these "strange electrical issues" in Europe then?
