I just bought a 6-speed 2009 GTI for my son as his first car. Man, he may have to pry it out of my hands to get a chance to drive it. I immediately fell in love with it.

the MKV GTI is one of the best driving cars I've ever been in. Super smooth, quiet and solid ride quality. But at the same time it's handling is sharp, planted and sporty. best of both worlds really.

Just found this and enjoyed it immensely. I had a Mk1 (1.8), a Mk2 (8v) and now run a 12 year old Mk5. It's cost me a small fortune to run, thanks to age, rust and the DSG mechatronic unit (beware!), but I love it and hope I'll have it for a few years yet.

I bought a Mk6 GTI new back in 2010 and absolutely loved it; a stage 1 tune brought it to life and it was a properly rapid car when driven smoothly on twisty roads. After a few years in an Audi S3 I've come back to VW with two Mk5s, including an immaculate 2008 R32, and it never fails to put a huge smile on my face. Sure it's not as polished or smooth as the Mk6, and is nowhere near as quick, but the car oozes character and the V6 sounds incredible. I enjoy driving it and even just looking at it far more than I did my '6. I'll be hanging onto it for quite a while I think.

I just sold my Mk 5 2007 GTI to a close friend. The car has 282,000 km on the odometer. I bought her new in late 2006. It's the longest I've ever owned a car. It will be very hard passing the keys over next week. The original brakes lasted to 206,000 km. Bye, bye GTI. She will be hard to replace.

My dad bought a manual transmission Mk5 gti in 2006 when I was 7 years old and I remember being excited because of it’s sound and the 200bhp which to me was insane at that time. I still remember the time I was in the backseat on the autobahn on the way to my grandma. We were being hopelessly late so my dad pushed the pedal down and accelerated up to over 200 kph in order to get there in time. Or how we traveled the grossglockner high alpine road or how only my dad and me were on the autobahn trying to find out how much difference there is between the real speed and the speed shown on the dashboard because he found some kind of easter egg where you had to press a certain combination of buttons and the actual speed would show in the displays that usually show the temperature of the air conditioning. Sadly my dad sold it in 2013 and I still miss it because I never had more fun with a car I never drove.

Just watched all 5 parts of this series, enjoyed them all. Alex is a pretty good presenter. One slight criticism- hopefully taken constructively: I think it would have 'flowed' better if you reviewed them in order I.E Mk 1 first, ending at 7, or starting at 7, then 1, ending at 5/6. The Mk6 should also have been given more time. You did say it was very good, but how does it differ from the Mk5? As I said though, overall, a good watch!

I have a 2006 MKV with 125000 miles. Many extended warranty fixes have been performed by the dealer free of charge. Things I had to do besides maintenance: cam follower replacement, intake valve cleaning (tbd), cv boots replacement (tbd), thermostat replacement (shitty location), diverter valve replacement. It burns oil. The remote control doesn't work, and the door locks require some weird sequencing to lock the doors. Also the front seat doesn't slide forward properly on my coupe. Still the best car I've had the pleasure to drive.

driving a Golf V 2.0 Turbo myself. Unfortunately a TDI, but I drive too many miles and I don't have the budget for a GTI... yet.
But I still love it and think it was the biggest evolutionary step in the GTI's history, especially compared to the mark IV. 2 Liter engine, which is used till today - DSG, which is used till today (brand new polo GTI), nice amount of nostalgic content, good fun, good looks and great comfort. What more do you need?

Still have my 07 Gti. It has about 108k miles. I am first owner. The air bag fault light comes and goes, seat belt light issues (turned it off with vag com), door locks started becoming faulty. Most mechanic stuff isn’t too much of a problem. Had to replace Pcv valve. Coil packs replaced under warranty. I also have to stay on top of the cam followers. I still have replaced the brakes except the rear brake pads. Rotors have been measured and still with a lot of thickness left. Overall I am happy with the Mk5 Gti but I must say that $300 for a door lock fix is rediculous.

Jordon my 07 I just sold has a GIAC tune. I highly recommend it as I never had a problem with my car. The tune was excellent.

I've owned so many Golfs from the mk1 up to the mk6. I loved the mk6 but the engine is a weak point (and different to the mk5). It's thr only car I ever owned where the engine catastrophically died in me. I would own a 5 but not a 6 again.

hello bro! i'm actually deciding between buying a mk5 or a mk6... why did your mk6 died? any recommendations? thanks!

    I've owned a mk 1campaign edition 1.8,. a mk 2 16v (brilliant) for nearly 10 years, then a mk 5 R32 for another 10.
I'm a bit out of date now. The mk 5 is the last golf I've driven.
It sounds like peak golf is probably a mk7 R.
I'd also be pretty happy with an up gti to be honest. I'm not in too much of a hurry any more....

Mk6 I think is the best golf ever made, it’s solid and classy, the Mk5 is pretty good also. Mk8 is definitely the worst golf so far

As far as build quality goes, if you’ve ever pulled these cars apart to do bodywork on, the MK5 GTI is noticeably better in its design and the fit & finish. This model probably had more $$$ spend on its R&D than any before or after. The panel gaps and the way each panel lines up with the other is next level build quality even by todays standards.

Mk5 gti is a peach especially the edition 30 with k04 turbo. The mk2 GTI was a great machine too. Mk1 the icon just awesome, must have been a revelation back then. What the hell were they thinking with the hideous mk4 gti I will never know?

I bought a 06 new. I haven't driven one since that even compares. That car felt like it cost twice as much as it did and I was forever looking for reasons to drive somewhere. Too bad my wife hated it (hatchback hate) and it started squeaking and rattling like a 20 year old car after 1 month.
