Most things associated with tank tracks are NOT specific to tanks but are general true for ALL chain drives. Return rollers, slack etc is important to all chain drives.
Slack, yes. Return rollers, no. Motorcycles and bicycles basically never have return rollers. Chain drives inside of combustion engines rarely have some.

These vehicles ran on wheels on road-marches (much faster), and switched to tracks for cross-country (rarely get stuck). The Soviet ministry of defence made him and his team create two different vehicles, one with the wheel + track setup and one with only tracks, the A-20 and the A-20G, respectfully. Thanks to Koshkin's efforts, only the A-20G version without tracks would enter production since the system with wheels and tracks was much worse and the A-20 didn't produce that much better results than the A-20G
I was an armor crewman in the army national guard for 6 years. I was trained on the driver and loader positions on the M1A1 Abrams MBT. Once, during our tank driver training in Fort Knox, Kentucky, we were driving the "Mud Course", a huge tank driving course full of hills and pits of Kentucky clay mud. One of the guys in my company didn't drive up a hill the way his Tank Commander instructed him, and his Abrams threw a track. This was just about the biggest no-no that a fledgling tank driver could commit. An M88 Hercules recovery tank had to come out to tow that Abrams off the driving course. He was in soooo much trouble with the Drill Sergeants. They smoked him good, poor guy lol

Did you know that the Christie suspension system on the T-34 and BT light tanks, enables removal of the trackbed, allowing the tanks to drive on roads without their tracks, traversing with the road wheels, to prevent damage to the tracks on hard surfaces.

Something I never understood when I was younger is why there wasn't a motorcycle chain or something on the drive sprocket to the first road wheel.... It's not much but simply being able to move is better than being dead in the water
I doubt a single powered road wheel would be enough to move a full size tank, assuming the chain drive is strong enough to handle that anyway, so it just wouldn't be worth the extra effort

I don't know if it's ever been trialed but if you connected the drive sprocket to the closest road wheel, via a chain or belt, then if you bust a track it might, in some cases allow you to still have some limited mobility to try and find some cover?
@@veikkakarvonen831 it would have to have some kind of teeth or rubber tyre but in a pinch it might just be enough, on a smooth surface obviously, to get the tank out of the open where it's a sitting duck. I'm sure people who know a lot more about tanks than me have already considered and dismissed it tho. Probably not worth the extra effort for the little you might gain, if anything.

Are the road wheels powered on a T-34? Otherwise, how does it move without the track to give the sprocket something to move?

Roller Wheels only exist on Support Roller type suspensions. They do NOT exist on what we call "Christy" style suspensions. :-)

More wheels reduce pressure between the wheels and the tracks, but bigger wheels allow for greater speeds. It's a balancing act.

A track is basically a mobile road you take with you
Tanks with the Christie system could run without tracks though.
That was usually only on paved surfaces where tracks weren't needed, and also because the tracks could've potentially damage road infrastructure.

Something I never understood when I was younger is why there wasn't a motorcycle chain or something on the drive sprocket to the first road wheel.... It's not much but simply being able to move is better than being dead in the water
I doubt a single powered road wheel would be enough to move a full size tank, assuming the chain drive is strong enough to handle that anyway, so it just wouldn't be worth the extra effort

I don't know if it's ever been trialed but if you connected the drive sprocket to the closest road wheel, via a chain or belt, then if you bust a track it might, in some cases allow you to still have some limited mobility to try and find some cover?
No way a singular smooth shock-absorbing road wheel is moving the tank an inch further...
@@veikkakarvonen831 it would have to have some kind of teeth or rubber tyre but in a pinch it might just be enough, on a smooth surface obviously, to get the tank out of the open where it's a sitting duck. I'm sure people who know a lot more about tanks than me have already considered and dismissed it tho. Probably not worth the extra effort for the little you might gain, if anything.
