Guys, this plot about the Gundam dismemberment was foreshadowed in EP1. He mentioned after uncovering the body pillows about how with every shipment of waifus they save, the dismemberment of a collector's Gundam goes unavenged.

Yes I was hoping but not optimistic about Gundam content in the finale; I was pleasantly surprised!
That was a leftover from the original light novel. The Gundam serial dismembering arc was much longer and way more intertwined with the other episodes, with at least one Gunpla dismemberment being mentioned offhandedly or in a sidestory.
Yep, and they finally made the episode about that.
Someone commented about them ignoring that detail in the first episode. I jokingly responded by telling them they had to save something for the rest of the series. I guess the jokes on me.

That was pretty cool
If you pay attention, you'll notice that the end credits reflect the narrative arc of Joe Furaya's character this season. In the first one, the room is well lit and Furaya is hard at work, representing how he's comfortable and experienced with his job and believes in what he's doing. In the second episode, we see a darker side of Furaya and the episode leaves him still confident but shaken. The light is gone in these end credits, representing how his career is no longer illuminated. Now the only light is coming from his phone (the only faith left is in his job comes from within) and he's searching for something he can't find (he wants to regain the confidence he had in his profession, but that has been permanently shaken). Finally, in this finale he becomes disillusioned with the crimes division, so he (and his light) are absent from the end credits. The light represents his outlook on his career and the city he defends, and it gets more dark as he gets more cynical. Wow, really impressed by the level of detail here and the complex story telling and I have no idea what I'm talking about but now I kind of believe it

This sequence actually does tie in with the original light novel's sequence of events, though.
For one, the light novel didn't begin with Joe's taking down an illegal dakimakura importer and snarking, but it instead had an entire chapter dedicated to him just casually walking the beat, narrating daily life in Neo Otaku City (the show trimmed it to Episode 1's cold opening sequence, presumably for runtime) and immediately responding to an unspecified crime on his phone.
(It even ended just the way the ending sequence shows, Joe relaxing at his desk.)
The second ending credits variation actually ties into Joe's increasing use of his smartphone throughout the novel's later descent into the darker side. So much so that there was a Psycho-Pass-esque arc where he unknowingly downloaded an app to remote control drones for illegal purposes (camera drones tying in with a smartphone visual novel. Who'da thunk?) and didn't find out he was involved until Diesel accidentally wiped his cache.
The show got the third ending just right.
All in all, the show is rather lighthearted compared to what the original novel had to offer.

...Well, we all saw this coming.
Even in this really compressed adaptation, it's still as visceral as ever.
The show really cut down on a lot of loose ends and dangling plot threads the original light novel left scattered. Y'know, l format, Joe was thrown off by a series of Gunpla-related murders involving a kid whose beloved SD Gundam Force figures were brutally pulverized, as well as somebody's Gundam AGE merch and a Gundam Seed collection.
The real killer threw those in there to throw Joe off-track, and he only found out the loss of his Gundam when he came back and saw the sirens.
Officer Vink had a bigger role during the investigation, and was the first of to respond when he found the Gundam. Heck, at the end, he was the one who tried talking down the Culprit when he was in a hood!
(too bad the Culprit was too far gone...)
Ah, and the show lost the impact of the scene where Joe confronts the Gundam Killer (originally the Grim Reaper in the narration): Joe didn't use bullets. He used the *_Destroy Decomposer_* mode on his Dominator.
Yes. The original light novel had him use the Dominator's Destroy Decomposer. It was _that_ hardcore.
( _I'm guessing this sequence was cut in the show because of the expenses in animating an actual Decomposer transformation sequence?_ )
There was also a subplot involving figma coming to life a la Toy Story or Small Soldiers and forming their own nation, but it didn't get adapted too...
The show also cut out the real big bad's speech at the end. Aww, I was hoping I'd hear his whole "The fanbase is cancer. I am the scalpel. I am a cyborg. I am Hiro. _Bang._ " speech too.
Maybe they're saving it for the next season?
All in all, this adaptation's good, but not perfect. The compressed nature helps in preventing its tendency to meander, sure, but a lot of the charm is lost in the process.

O_O I ... am officially lost.
I really hope they do the ACD High School spin-off, because the two Universes fundamentally diverge from this point in the series, and this is around when the FIRST anime spun off, too. Granted ACDHS was more of a "harem" comedy, I still found the heavy handed Christian overtones charming enough to keep coming back to it.
I wonder who they'll get to play Jesus? And what about Jesus 2.0? I hope we find out!
Ryan Heiss well you can't forget that ACDHS did have a darker streak midway through it's full show length, that left a lot of questions, yet I doubt they'd adapt that due to expensive animation budgets.

The dubbing was bad in the first episode because they were making a joke about how bad some dubs are. And it was only for the Dubbing Clan.
syaondri but if you REALLY read into his sub plot in the second book you'll see why his crimes are truly unconscionable. He is a metaphor for what we can be if we forget what anime is truly about. He's relatable so that we may never forget. I for one can't stand behind this #problematicfave

I already have Crunchyroll premium but if y'all had a patreon or anything at all I'd donate the hell out of it. This series is so good, even with all the good feedback it's been getting, it still feels severely underrated. The timing, the acting, the premise, the comedy, the cinematography -- that beautiful goddamned lighting near the end. Even the opening makes me cry weeb tears. At first I was like, "meh, the shots aren't great". Then this episode rolled around, and man... The cinematography is pretty fantastic.
They keep saying in the bts that they wanted to somewhat merge live action and anime cinematogrophy. Imo they did such a great job that I would even use this as a reference for storyboarding, since it uses different genres of techniques for different types of scenes.
