- In Episode 206 of Mike Finnegan's Garage, myself, David Newbern, and our friend Brandon Wise travelled from Georgia to Tennessee to party with 30 other RUclipsrs at Cletus McFarland's Bristol 1000 race and Cletus n' Cars burnout competition. Both were held at the Legendary Bristol Motor Speedway, the same high-banked oval track where NASCAR races are held. Taking a page from my wife's playbook, we overpacked for the trip, bringing two ramp trucks, one car and one jet boat for no reason other than to have a good time. This is the story of how I got caught up in the nastiest wreck ever, and rear-ending Kyle Wade's Crown Vic cop car at nearly full speed. One of the things that makes Finnegan one of my favorites to watch is that while being super competitive, even though he got taken out super early, he's just happy to be there and have fun!
He took himself out. Bad driving. Caution was called but he kept in it. Could of cost a life.

I'm still liking my idea of a couple fan boat type fans at one end of the burnout box so they blow the smoke enough so the spectators can watch the cars the whole time. And it would be safer for the drivers and cars.
The fact you brought death meatal to Bristol, a nascar track was epic. The original vison of that car was to go to a nascar even and even though its not a nascar race, it still made it to one of nascar's most popular tracks

Dude, I so wanted to mob you outside the hotel lol, but I had a hand full of dinner for the family, and you were already drawing a crowd, figured you were beat from the race and wanted to get to bed, but I do appreciate you giving me a shout back when I hollared from across the parking lot! I went out and got a selfie with the ramp truck later, met about 10 other goobers there to do the same thing, had great conversations with folks from all over, from Wisconsin to Alabama, Florida to Ohio, it was amazing! Hope you had a safe trip back home! Also, I'm very jealous of your buddy's tundra, I think I'm gonna get a black one just like it!

Back in the early 70s, while I was still an apprentice toolmaker working at Ford UK, Research & Engineering at Dunton, we used to use the MIRA (Motor Industries Research Association - I think). We tested in the night shift because it was cheaper to run the four big electric motors that turned propellers from a Lancaster bomber. As the apprentice, it fell to me to go get the evening meal which was usually an Indian curry. It says something for the time that I had to drive all the way to Coventry for the nearest Indian restaurant - I bet there are 100 Indian restaurants closer than that nowadays. Our hack car was a Mk4 Zodiac, which had suspension made from jelly. The steering was so soft you had to anticipate a turn and move the steering wheel early. MIRA has a banked circuit, and being young and foolish, I thought I'd get a lap in on my way back with our curry. It was totally dark and the track is quite narrow. Especially where the track transitions into the banked sections. You can't see too far ahead because the headlights are pushed down on the banked sections, so it was all a bit scary. I decided to get one slow lap in, and then floor it, so coming out of the second banked turn I went for it. What I didn't know is that MIRA has three banked turns, and when I hit the third turn I found the track blocked by a tarmac resurfacing machine and a dump truck. I was doing 80mph, and thought I was about to die, but fortunately, the top of the banking was open, and I managed to swerve through the gap. I never told the rest of the crew, but they asked why I was shaking when I got back. I think that was the closest I have come to dying.

I missed out that we were testing in the MIRA wind tunnel. Sometimes we'd get there for the start of our shift while the day shift was packing up. Our favourite crew for this was Jaguar as they used to get super paranoid about us hanging around their test car. What was worse is that they had highly out of date test equipment like Honeywell chart recorders, and we had what was state of the art for that time. We ribbed them mercilessly, and by heck they hated it. Stuffy buggers. What is funny is that Ford bought Jaguar in 1999. I don't remember working with Jaguar people but we certainly shared facilities with Land Rover when Ford bought that company. I was working in the instrument calibration lab by then, and we calibrated their accelerometers and other stuff. The Land Rover guys were great to work with, and not at all stuck up like the Jaguar people.
This really highlights something: that unfolded insanely fast and these cars were going much slower than stock cars. It's a testament to NASCAR driver skills that pileups like this don't happen every single race.
While watching this with the benefit of knowing how your day would end is funny, glad you and everyone else were ok in that wreck.
I have to say that I love Roadkill, but Faster with Finnegan is SO much better! I just watched the lawn mower episode. You, Newbern and Cotton are GOLD. I was in stitches. I hope you guys keep that show going for a long time. Also, you're one of my favorite RUclips channels. Glad you're okay! Man, that looked like fun.

Finally you made it to one of Cleetus events.. I've been wanting to see you racing at one for ages, hopefully not the last.. bad luck with the incident.. plenty of people pointing the finger at who caused it but to me it was a racing incident, I don't think Cleetus has held an event yet were something hasn't happened...
A lot of people are forgetting you are driving ex-cop cars not race cars and most of you are just everyday drivers not race drivers...
its also america where people only know nascar and demo derbies, not that theyre much different anymore. people have confused rubbing with leaning on or dive bombing other cars. i'm just glad no one was seriously hurt

@@Mr.monke_222 i'm not sure how much racing youve done but one mistake (thats hes already apologized for) is far from uncommon. but like i said, that one mistake has bigger consequences these days for him, and every other driver when "rubbing" is a very loose term.

The guys that were fast in this race were turning low 20 sec. laps. That equates to a 90 mph average so the hits were huge.
And the bumper/chassis rails didn't move an inch, damn those things are tough!

I was like what the hell is this, and I recognized David from hot rod magazine. Turned out to be the greatest internet Discovery I ever came across, now I watch just about all the shows on the Motor Trend app..

And the verdict is. This guy shoulda slowed down but kyle kind turned down and left him nowhere to go……. But if cautioned. Might have Gapped more.
@@sictoday fins tires were already screaming so it's not like he could have really done anything else once he was on that collision course. still the comment he made about not slowing down because no one else around him was seems pretty bullshit to me considering he slammed into the back of the person in front of him.
If finnegan just let go of the wheel and let the car drift to the outside of the corner when he saw the slow down he might have skimmed by kyle or at least minimized the hit.

The story behind Finnegans 999 number is if he ever flips over it reads 666 lol. Can’t remember where I heard him say it but it was a long time ago.
Its really cool seeing everyones story, perspective, points of view, and events leading up to the wreck from every car since everyone is recording. You can't get that from NASCAR. I think ole Cleetus is going to respark interest in the sport. I would love to see more sponsors; new engines, trans, brakes, and body panels. Heck maybe even tube frames and whole fiberglass bodies. Would just love to see everyone with new bones put into these cars so they don't die so easily. So many coolant pops before the race even started and I don't think Finnegan had the only battery problem.
Pretty much sounds like you want to eliminate this "class" and step up into a class that already exists. Full tube cages with fiberglass bodies?? Lol.
? So you basically want to end what kind of started and make it just another racing class lol because that's what it would do and it wouldn't be fun anymore because most of the fun comes from them being half clapped out crown vics from cops n taxis
@@Keifsanderson I understand the point of view but im noticing how fast they are totaling these cars. At the rate they are going this won't be much of a series for too long when they run out of cars. There are only so many crown vics and im sure someone will be shady and start buying them up and marking them up to sell to cleetus and friends. I'm just thinking ahead and that they need to do something like have prefabbed parts (hoods, fenders, doors, replace the glass with plexi for safety) so that they can keep their cars operational and not run out of cars. Cleetus has a tire sponsor but it would be nice to see a sponsor provide replacement engines, coolant systems, brakes, etc. Just because too many racers keep getting knocked out of the race.
@@John_Conner222 if they total 20 cars a race 4 races a year for the next 20 years that’s 1,600 cars. They probably made three quarter of a million of these things….
The dale truck towing a jet boat around Bristol is a perfect example of what the nascar truck series should look like. Make the drivers back into their pits and it would become a true test of driver skill.

@@mikescherrer4923 They don't have cages. they have a 4 point roll hoop with curved forward facing door bars that don't even extend to the firewall, no halo and I'm not even certain there are rear down bars. They comment that the floors are rusted and you can see through to the ground. The window nets are attached to the door cards with wood screws. then they put a bunch of inexperienced youtubers on a banked oval to go wheel to wheel.
It's not even halfway safe.

If you search 'lockpicking lawyer master lock' on youtube, its faster to get those locks open without the key XD You could have just stuck a wrench in the top of the shackle and levered it open

Glad you made it out alright man, that was a helluva hit, reminds me of when I wrecked my '77 Delta 88, I was doing 45 up a four lane highway, someone ran a light in front of me and all I could think was "Oh hell", totaled my poor Oldsmobile, pushed the drivers side wheel back 6 inches.
Lol kinda reminds me when i ass ended a reefer trailer in a snow storm with my Mitsubishi. All i could say was "ah fu"". Didn't have enough time to even finish with the ck until the air bags deflated

Considering my old 2012 Fusion broke everything between the license plate and the engine block when I hit a coyote at 60 MPH, that Crown Vic took that crash like a champ.
I know as another car guy you would have kicked yourself for years because you missed it . also it was probably the first 2JZ around Bristol Motor Speedway as well
Its only a matter of time before someone gets hurt doing one of these. Every race someone gets a hard hit in a car not meant for it. Randy Pobst on his channel said in the nicest way possible that it was a complete clusterfuck and he wouldn't be attending anymore

That is why you need a spotter at a track like that. You're hauling ass, and can't see what's happening past the turn you're in. Bristol is mind blowing in person! Blessed to have driven on it a few times!
There was a spotter. It was spotted. It was communicated on the radio headset, of which it was ignored.
@@Jay-Kay-Em no, there were race officials communicating what the course is under. A spotter feeds you live info about everything going on ahead of you. VERY different things.

Fin what's your thoughts on the fact that you ignored the caution and the result is part of what made you and others crash so badly? Normally in racing we get a massive penalty if we ignore a yellow flat, it's one of the worst things you can do on a circuit.

This was a badass idea, but I believe there was some things overlooked. They type of cars, safety equipment for the speeds they will be going and the lack of experience most the drivers had in this type racing. All 3 of those can lead to disaster all in their own, then you mix all 3 together.
I think this accident might have opened some eyes to the potential danger and the next race will be setup differently.
