The narrator has the most beautifully elegant, softly spoken voice. Absolute perfection to tell this story which turns convention on its head as he did in his own scandalous life. ❤❤❤xxx
I've read and reread my copy of a collection of Somerset Maugham's short stories that it's falling apart. They are absolutely wonderful, and time after time totally unexpected.
I really enjoyed this story, mainly because this time a REAL live person was the narrator in the person of the excellent actor Alfred Molina. I find it disturbing when the AI versions stumble on the nuances.
I have a collection of Somerset Maugham's short stories. They are all fabulous- some tragic, some comical, most cynical. All a wonderful description of homes, people and history. His descriptions were so rich- my favorite aspect of his talent.
And that's why Maughm is my favourite author of the English language! Beautifully narrated. Thanks so much for the upload. Best wishes from a freezing Patagonia, Chile.
How could anything be anything but beautiful when it comes to Mr.S.Maugham. Lovely story nd equally good narration nd lifted me from my blues. Can't TQ enough.
I must say, this is a timeless story to aspire to for everyone. We should continue to grow. We should continue to strive. We, should all strive to enhance and find the uniqueness in ourselves and others, to brighten our satisfactorily bland lives we settle into. Who knew a parable could be so priceless. Thank Jane and Gilbert in their example
I found joy in a message promoting authenticity, acceptance, and kindness. Gilbert saw her sweet realness - her inner beauty. He transformed her outwardly appearance to it reflected HER without artiface... very architectural!
This is one of my favorites. A very unique plot and approach. I often wonder why Maugham never dramatized it (although S.N. Behrman did) as his plays were very successful and would seem a natural) I've viewed some still photos of the production. Jane, with her white hair, monocle, and extreme fashions, must have been very effective!
Somerset takes me back to a Britain of my father's time of my family and our travels around the world with the Diplomatic Service. Of the English reserve and eccentricity and this Somerset conveys it all for us middle class English. We were trained never to talk about emotional issues always polite conversation. Yes to others we must seem a peculiar lot. We are we are English through and through.
Is it really such a bad thing NOT to blurt out the personal details to all and sundry at drop of a hat ?? Emotional incontinence is just as bad as the stiff upper lip...? Try watching morning television...?
WSM-20th century story teller extraordinaire. Ranks on a par with Greene, Borges, Cronin ans Wells. This audio a pleasure to listen to this Sunday afternoon, over an eclair and some tea biscuits. Thank you. [ 04 Sept. 2022 ]
Yes. Cronin is sadly forgotten today. Perhaps Television will re-discover him ?? Though he probably doesn't tick the now compulsory boxes at the Beeb..!
With the way our society works, it can be rather troubling to be true to oneself and feel free to express individuality. The main character from ‘Jane’ by Somerset Mangham is a perfect example of a confidant and sincere person, as she always stays true to her believes and feels comfortable in her own body. Jane may not be as fashionable and active as her sister-in-law, but she has her charms and treats everyone with kindness and respect. It’s her personality that makes her so special to other people, and no matter what some may say she never betrays her views. "He's penniless and you're rich… He’s marrying you for your money. /Jane remained perfectly composed. /"I don't think he is, you know, she replied. "I think he’s very fond of me." She may seem timid and reliable, easy to manipulate, but in truth, she knows her worth and doesn’t let people be cruel to her. She is open to new experiences, always ready to try something new: “Gilbert and the French maid taught her how to wear her clothes, and, unexpectedly enough, she was very quick at learning.” Jane is very sincere. Both in her appearance and feelings."…people began to laugh at what I said no one was more surprised than I was. I'd said the same things for thirty years and no one ever saw anything to laugh at…Then I discovered it was because I spoke the truth.” It is so difficult to be that kind of person, knowing how cruel the world can be, but no matter what, this woman never changes. In conclusion, we all can take some lessons from Jane. We should be as open, as truthful and kind as she is if we want to stay true to ourselves no matter how rudely some may treat us and how hard life can be.
Molina reading Maugham, how fabulous. And one of the authors best short stories. I’m so glad in those days most authors didn’t ‘’Kill their Darlings’ however, the background music I could have strangled.
Just a wonderful reading but please, lose the background music. It's distracting and a bit annoying. If we want background music, we can play our own but we can't take it off the soundtrack!
That was the most wonderful story I just loved it I bet in his original draft Somerset. M a u g h a m had the young man run off with another young man of course he couldn't print that at the time I wish delightful I just loved it
What a snob Somerset Maugham is! I love it. Like Henry James but with a cutting wit and dripping irony. Tell me more... And AI is cerainly no match for Alfred Molino ❤❤❤
Alfred Molina the actor who always played the villain in Westerns due to his handsome, dark looks and Hispanic heritage? Isn't he the one who played the bad guy in the comedy Western Maverick?
The narrator has the most beautifully elegant, softly spoken voice. Absolute perfection to tell this story which turns convention on its head as he did in his own scandalous life. ❤❤❤xxx
What a delightful story, beautifully read by Alfred Molina. Thanks for sharing.

Am in full agreement. Maugham's powers of observation are, in my opinion, equal to his talent for description.
Delightful story!
Short story perfection, exquisitely narrated. Thank you, Natalia!!

@L.K...Amen! Sometimes it is a tightrope!
Priceless!
What a delightful story. I ' m chuckling away gently.
A very interesting plot - so typical of this author.
What a fabulous story! Why hasn't this been made into a film? It is timeless and full of humanity.
Good idea
I'm glad its almost midnightt, here north of Tokyo, because I'm also struck dumb by the wit of Mr. Maugham. Good night
Yes. At his best he WAS the best. !!
Wow... Somerset Maugham... one of the best........ ❤

Excellent story. Mr. Molina's complimentary narration. So much better than the souless A I that seems to be " en vogue " Background music superfluous.
Excellent entertainment
The voice
Beautiful narration....
Beautiful story, equally beautifully narrated. But here .. spoiled by ads.

THANK YOU, THAT WAS REALLY WONDERFUL, I ENJOYED IT IMMENSELY. HAD ME SPELLBOUND. BLESSINGS, TRIXIE, 86 , FROM SOUTH AUSTRALUA
It’s a lovely story, but the intrusion of the somewhat too loud music spoiled my pleasure in it.
Absolutely delightful
The background music is truly distructing. Its too loud too. The narrator's voice is sufficient without it. Thank you so much.
A perfect pairing of story and reader. Bravo!
One of my favourite Maugham stories, beeautifully read. 😊🎉
Guys, other 2 stories in this playlist are super nice too!
