- The United States is no longer a majority white, Christian country, and that is already beginning to have profound social and political implications. At 45 percent of the population, white Christians are a shrinking demographic-and the backlash from many members of the group against the increasing diversification of America has been swift and bitter. “People fight like that when they are losing a sense of place, a sense of belonging, and a sense of the country that they understand and love,” says Robert P. Jones, the author of 'The End of White Christian America,' in this animated interview. “How do they reengage in public life when they can’t be the majority?”

The white decline is simply because wealthy people have less children- whites propagate less by virtue of their group income status and overall wealth combined with immigrants being mostly non white since..well why would Europeans want to move? The problem with this scenario is not everyone is particularly religious but see Christianity as a cultural identity and will default back to their cultural identity. Not believing in Christianity is one thing....but an attack on Christianity would be seen as a cultural attack...even atheist would side with Christianity if they believe their cultural identity is being attacked. Example: I'm not particularly religious but if someone attacked my grandmother because of her belief in Christianity it would make me hostile towards them regardless of my own beliefs.

Now name a nation that has never undergone a demographic shift. Even America itself wasn't a single demographic nation, with influx of meso-Americans, Spaniards, French, Anglo-Saxons, Dutch, etc.
Wrong. The Abbasid Caliphate was an empire with a centralized culture and religion. They experienced a new influx of cultures because they *conquered them*.
Now, I never said no nation had ever undergone dramatic demographic shift. The nations that have, though, became a nation unlike it’s previous self. Sometimes it was for the better, sometimes for the worse - depending on the culture(s) involved.

America demographically shifting from a roughly 90% white nation in 1965 to one that’s now under 60% white today has its consequences and will have more later. And importantly, the people replacing the demographic that built this nation do not oftentimes retain the same values. In fact, by the current trend there will be no dominant culture in the United States by 2050 and by that point what will be holding us together? We won’t be centralized like the Romans or the Abbasids were, even though that didn’t save even those empires. We won’t have a decent unifying factor. America will not be a nation in any sense of the word other than that it will be a meaningless conglomeration of national borders.
This isn’t comparable to a country like 1820s France being different from 1920s France. That’s silly. We are talking about a major demographic, racial, religious, and thus cultural and value shift nationally.

Just because a history textbook depicts pictures of violence and discusses the evils of it does not automatically mean it is in support of it. The Bible also speaks about God’s mercy and great love. So I’m not sure where vengeful God comes from. Just because religious extremists use it to bad stuff doesn’t mean the original text itself advocates for those things. I think people just like to blame spirituality and religion for their problems when often human beings don’t like to self-accountability for their own actions and instead blame God when things go wrong.

There are churches, mosques, temples, synagogues and meeting places of worship or even meditation /yoga in every city and state in the country. Our nation isn't secular. The government derives its powers not from Jesus Christ, but the people. The 53 founders of our government, especially the top 10 we hear about all the time were deist, not Christians. Because of our colonial history with most states having state sponsored churches, the founding fathers knew too well the problems religion created here and in Europe. The mention of a higher power in the Declaration of Independence was decorative at best, and it is not a governing document, it’s a declaration, or proclamation to England, Jefferson, Franklin, Jefferson, and many others were not Christians in the sense that you claim. The US Constitution is based on English Common Law, John Locke, and a half a dozen thinkers from the Enlightenment.

As for the Catholics I have to say that all the Catholic priests I met so far were at least very educated and wellspoken persons (saying that as a former Catholic who became Atheist), while I cannot even listen to some Evangelical Con Artists before I get either headaches or a laugh attack.
