The song, the album is about the war in Sarejevo (happening when this was released) and a young man on one side of the fight and a young women on another. Long story short, they are both drawn into the city center and he wants her to run away with him and leave the war, but since he's wearing the uniform of her enemy she's hesitant. This song is essentially him trying to convince her that he's not bad and the line "its the dark your hating, its not who I am but i know that its all that you see" is about the uniform and her seeing that darkness and him telling her its not him.

Thank you for your kind words. Paul and I discussed this song at length decades ago. We understood that the counterpoint was not….We just did not have the money at the time to fix the end vocals. Again, thank you.

Just stumbled on this reaction vid and saw this response. Much love to Paul. Met him on the first TSO tour, I believe it was their 6th stop (Michigan). He actually recognized my user name from the Savatage message boards, which stunned me. He took some time to talk to me and my friends, and when he heard that we were all big fans of Mark Wood, and pointed him out to us so we could meet him as well.

You heard, in this video, 2 staples of Savatage, syncopated vocals and epic songs and endings at the end of a cd. This is not the first cd that they ended perfectly. If I ever do get married, I will propose with the lyrics, I swear on tomorrow.....and following.
To help understand this song you have to understand that it is the final song of a rock opera. The song is set in Sarajevo after the breakup of Yugoslavia, during the wars between Bosnia and Serbia in the mid 90's. First off everyone was happy about what they thought was new found freedom. Then things devolved into a big mess. Through all of this, during lulls in the fighting, an old man in the Sarajevo main square, played his violin during the breaks from the shelling. The man continues to do this nightly, bringing a bit of happiness during chaos and ugliness. Then one night, his music stops. A male soldier from Serbia, and a woman from Bosnia, who have both enjoyed the old man's playing go into the town square to see what happened. They find the old man dead from a mortar round and then spy each other. These two ethnicities have always been enemies, but things change, here. These two disparate souls have bonded over the old man's music and wonder if they could bond over something else. In other words, why couldn't they leave this all, go far away from here and be happy together. Yes, this is a love song. The whole rock opera is a love story set to the backdrop of the Bosnian-Serbian conflict. I have seen lists for best metal love songs that include this song prominantly. If you liked this, you have to listen to the whole rock opera Dead Winter Dead, in its entirety.

It's funny you mention the "Christmas Carol" sound, as this album was basically the birth of what came to be known as the Trans-Siberian Orchestra (founded by and featuring members of Savatage), with the actual birth being a track called "Christmas Eve (Sarajevo 12/24)".
The album is called _Dead Winter Dead_ and it's epic, beginning to end. It's a rock opera surrounding a trio of individuals caught up in the bitter civil war in the former Yugoslavia, immediately after the fall of the Iron Curtain & collapse of the Soviet Union. This particular track is near the end of the album, when two of those characters cross the battle lines and come face to face with each other for the first time. The full story is laid out in the liner notes, which can be found online.

IMO, one of the greatest hard rock / power metal / melodic rock / prog rock songs of all time. Maybe a little Disney-esque, but thoroughly phenomenal. And that guitar solo.....! (Especially considering the story / historical context behind the song.)

To each his own, but I think Zak Stevens does a perfect job on this on the original Dead Winter Dead version.

Great reaction to another great Savatage song! Please do "Hounds" from the album Gutter Ballet next, you would be first to react to this epic song!

Hounds would be a great one to react to. Strange Wings would be another great one that don't have alot of reactions. Hounds has one reaction from about 3 or 4 years ago. From The Fire Within reaction channel. Check it out, I'm the one that got him to react to it.

You definitely should check out more Savatage. To me the final song from their Rock Opera Streets has the best song lyrics ever written!
