Hi, so awesome that you finally did this. Have you listened to the album from start to finish? Fantastic story. I’m sure you know, but this video is part of Operation:Livecrime. It’s the live version of the album while they were on tour. If you get an opportunity, I highly recommend watching it as the stage production and videos playing behind the band, give an exciting visual of the story. I saw this particular tour 7 times and every one was individually epic!! Anyway, THANK YOU FOR DOING THIS. One of my fav songs on the album. See you next time. 🙏🏼❤️🤘🏼👏🏼🙌🏼🥳✌️

Thanks for digging into the story of this LP, and taking the time to give a bit of an explanation. I've been a huge fan of this band since their first release in the early 80's...To this day 'Ryche is a regular listen several times a week. The only time that I got to take in one of their shows was on the Mindcrime Tour...one of the absolute best shows I've ever been to over the years (200+).

I think Suite Sister Mary is THE most beautiful and evocative music suite in heavy metal history. This song is a big part of what makes this album so great. Also, he didn't kill Mary; he went there to do so, but he couldn't do it. They made plans to escape together, and when he told Dr. X that he wanted out (The Needle Lies), Dr. X figured out what was going on and killed her and framed Nicky for it, effectively killing (literally with Mary) two birds with one stone, silencing them both. Nicky was waiting for Mary to meet him so they could escape, but the cops were tipped off and arrested him for her murder instead. (Breaking the Silence and then I Don't Believe in Love). Nicky has a complete mental breakdown in custody and is deemed insane after spilling his guts about Dr. X and Operation: Mindcrime, repeating over and over that he didn't kill Mary, that it was this "Dr. X". The authorities don't believe his story, deem him mentally unfit and he ends up in a psychiatric ward for the criminally insane (Eyes of a Stranger).

Also, noting that Mary is still used as a prostitute for the cult, especially the priest who "takes her once a week on the altar like a sacrifice" (the very same priest who "saved her from the streets" does still use her the same way, so did he save her? He just changed the environment in which she is used as a tool).
Hence "the holy altar burn my thighs spread in the sacrificial rite" : she is literally feeling the rape on the altar.
The album's lyrics are very political : government is corrupt, church is corrupt, and the revolution leaders are even more corrupt and use the downtrodden's revolt and hope just to use them for their own power.

Honestly I couldn't do the whole album by the time I was half way through the album singing karaoke my throat was shot and I struggled and hurt my voice doing it the rest of the way . Thank God I found an app that someone took the time to eliminate all the vocals and I could hear myself doing it in it's entirety fun times . I have to add that the words didn't come out it was just an awesome instrumental so you had to know every single word and sing it and luckily I remembered them . Btw I did have to sing the sister Mary parts in order to not lose my place so luckily I'm the only one who ever heard it .

As other have already said, DeGarmo and Tate were Queensrÿche.... The conversation pretty much ends there. Yes, the band had great players, and Scott Rockenfield is another that never get's the credit he deserves as an absolutely monstrous drummer, but at the end of the day, the writing duo of DeGarmo and Tate made that band what it was. Kind of like Journey (and many other bands).... The writing team of Perry, Schon, and Cain was what made Journey the insane success they were. Once you remove one, it's all downhill from there. Once DeGarmo left Ryche, there was no hope of ever capturing that kind of prolific writing ever again.

I believe Chris worked extensively with Geoff on all the vocal melodies whilst he was in the band, and that he was the glue in the creative process. The first "mine" refers to the streets, as in he's in his element. The second "mine" refers to the two of them running away together and getting out of this alive. Unfortunately, Dr X isn't happy that his assassin failed to take out Mary, so he has to do it himself, then frame the now distraught assassin for it all... and then, as his doctor, keep him well-medicated, so he can't talk about all that he's done for Dr. X...

But on Operation Mindcrime II live video they show Dr. X. hypnotizing her to shoot herself. Finally the original OM video showed Dr. X strangling her. Best not to think about it too much.

Interesting interpretation. Except the phrase is “they’re mine” and it would seem more that he’s referring to the streets in both. Nikki wants them to run away together but if you listen more carefully to the lyrics I believe Mary refuses to go, resigned to her fate. She is ready for Nikki to just shoot her there and then. They do not leave together. The next track, Electric Requiem, is where he returns to find her dead.

Struggling here, glad for the analysis but I feel that there are so many errors given in the summarizing of the story. Marry didn’t turn to god, she was working for the underground. Nikki didn’t kill her, Dr X did after Nikki refused and tried to save her because he was in love with her. The song The Mission summed up the story up to this song pretty nicely.
I’ve always wondered about was the line “seeking shelter from the pour” or would it be “poor”, the way he says it I almost think it’s the poor.
One of my many favorite pieces of brilliance on this album is in the tittle song when Nikki answers the phone and you hear the hypnotic trigger on the phone receiver and then the phone rings again and it’s like the listener is answering the phone when the hypnotic trigger is played.

But did Dr X kill Mary? From what I understand that was very unclear for quite some time. Just google and you find several discussions about it. At this time in the story we actually don´t know. And the first album doesn´t tell us who killed her. It could still be a brainwashed Nikki on drugs that doesn´t remeber. But has it not later been revealed that she commited suicide after Dr X tells her to? So morally speaking he is responsible. No doubt. But he doesn´t actually kill her. Finally. If becoming a nun isn´t turning to God, what is? It didnt help her much though. But she becomes a nun when she´s 17. And don´t meet Dr X until she´s 18. So she is a nun before she gets involved with his doing.

Loooove this album! Saw them on this tour when they did entire album with screens live (was the Empire tour actually). Suicidal Tendencies opened for them (of course with Mr. Robert Trujillo, now of Metallica). The entire Queensryche concert was great, but in the middle of the show when they did the entire Operation Mindcrime album straight thru...THAT was AMAZING! (The DVD they put out of this live Operation Mindcrime performance, called 'Operation LIVEcrime' from which this video comes, is awesome and captures the live performance amazingly).

For all of QR's mastery, I always felt this to be their finest blend - customary stellar vocals / musicianship, with great songwriting, storytelling and theatrics. All we had in the late 80s was their recordings (very little video anyway). We lived this rock opera out in our heads. Having seen QR perform only once - was amazed/relieved to find their live performance every bit the high-end reproduction as their session work. No longer merely a theater of the mind. An impactful album for me still, 35 years later.

This was Queensryche at their peak, though Operation: Mindcrime II is so underrrated - as someone else pointed out, there's a duet between Dio and Geoff Tate that is, in my opinion, the most incredible duet of all time (and far too short XD). Other things they've done since the original Mindcrime were good - Empire is a classic album - but this was their MASTERPIECE.
I was lucky enough to see them perform both Operation: Mindcrime and Operation: Mindcrime II live in San Francisco when they toured performing both. Geoff Tate actually sang IN A STRAIGHTJACKET with the microphone tucked into it. Just incredible.
Despite all the drama surrounding him these days, I'll always be haunted by his vocals - they're just that beautiful.

You're correct about the brainwashing. He was given drugs during his indoctrination into the cult while broken down mentally. From there, he was conditioned for his purpose as an assassin with a trigger word: "Mindcrime" that activates his conditioning to obey. You're also correct that he kills Mary. However, there is no song where he actually does so. He only comes to realize that she's dead. He "finds" her body, but clearly has no idea he killed her. This indicates since he failed to do so when commanded at the beginning of "Suite Sister Mary", he was "activated" with the trigger word to obey, and carry out his orders.
