  • This is my first track day, and first time driving on the track in general! I cruised out to Thompson Speedway with the MassBMW crew, to take our cars on the track and see how they handled at their limits. Oh boy, did I push my Mk6 GTI to its limits.
    -
    Does the GTI make a good track or autocross car??? After this experience, I know the GTI's issues, and what modifications I need to do, in order to make it more comfortable on the track. Stay tuned for the next video!
    -
    The car:
    2014 VW GTI Wolfsburg Edt. w/138,000 miles
    6-Speed Manual
    Stage 2 Unitronic ECU Tune
    Unitronic High-Flow Downpipe w/200-cell Cat
    Unitronic Cold air Intake w/K&N Filter
    Michelin Pilot Sport AS3's
    GFB Diverter Valve
    Subframe Collar Kit
    (More mods to come!)

    Definitely nice to see you and the rest of these folks taking their *nice* cars out and really driving them like they were designed to do. Good stuff Matt! (also thumbs up to the dude with the GTO)

      I agree Mike! It's only a handful of people who will ever take their track-designed cars on the track. And it's so fun to see what they can actually do. That's my buddy Dan in the GTO. He went to the Burg! His insta is @adornator

    I have 4 Volkswagens. My 88 scirocco 16v is my favorite autocross car. I bought myself a 2011 GTI yesterday I plan to build for tracking.

    Track days are great. Nice to see a CTS-V, GTO, and a couple Corvettes. That guy's M3 is way fucking obnoxious. I couldn't imagine daily driving that.
    Good video overall. Even if may not have performed as well as you liked you didn't break down and no one got hurt. So that's a big win in my book 👌

    This looked like a blast man! Loved this track day vlog, the Mario sound effects had me dying hahah 🤣. Can’t wait to see more from ya, and I agree the stock mk6 brakes are definitely the weak point of the car. 10/10 m8 🔥

      Thanks Chris!! It WAS an absolute blast. So fun to finally push the GTI to its limits (safely). I've got a few mods that are coming in and should help the car on the track. Hopefully I can eventually get Sam in the car, too, and get her reactions.

    You did a great job describing the experience. I have done some motorcycle track days but no auto track days. Your video was really useful (and I have a GTI, so even more-so). Anyway, very cool, very informative and really appreciated. Thanks/Cheers!

    Depending on how serious you go with this engine and gearbox you need a iABED baffled sump as youll kill the oil pressure sloshing the oil about (unfortunately i blew my balance shaft on a trackday in the same engine). Also the 02Q gearbox being abused on the track can strip 4th gear as it pushes away from 3rd on high rpm/torque shifts 😭. There is a 4th gear support mod which is pretty cheap. Standard oil cooler is shocking as well but again its just lots of money to prevent something that may or may not happen. I just get fed up of the car breaking everytime i took it to the track so made it a dedicated track car now.

    • @NotSoHandyCarGuy
      @NotSoHandyCarGuy  2 года назад +1

      Very good to know! I will look into the baffled sump. Since doing this video, I did a stage 2 clutch, Wavetrac LSD, rear strut tower brace, poly bushing shift linkages, stainless steel shift forks, slight lowering springs, and a spacer kit. The gearbox feels a lot more precise now, and LSD feels fantastic. The back end also feels a lot more planted from the bracing. I’m about to do poly bushings in the control arms, too. Did you end up upgrading sway bars?

    • @tomwhit1982
      @tomwhit1982 2 года назад

      @@NotSoHandyCarGuy yes i did front and rear whiteline sway bars which is definitely vworth it. Theres still quite a lot of flex even after upper and lower struts. Ive done a rear k brace and rear subframe support as well but may go towards a cage next year. I just have my gearbox apart in the garage fitting a wavetrac this weekend (drilling the rivets out was a PITA). Sounds like youve done it the right way around getting the LSD done early as ive been having a real issue getting the power down.
      Also may be worth looking up the subframe deadset kits as well as mine started clunking after fitting the sway bars and Bilstein coilovers. You always just say one more mod and then youre done and then you keep buying more and more! 🤣
      Good luck with the build. Ill subscribe and follow your progress 👍

      Brilliant!! As someone who was SO nervous on his first track day but within two laps realised that it is absolutely not about racing other people but learning about your abilities, your vehicle and your confidence....and leaving ego in the paddock!!..i say hats off, top man, well done and thanks on behalf of anyone watching this and thinking 'yeah but it's not for me'. Loving the style of your videos and the laid back, honest and, much like I would...the slightly self deprecating humour! 😆🎯 (p.s., the last track day i did, i crashed. On a bike. Those lessons stick with you 😂)
