Ollie the Owl free pattern is here: thecrochetcrowd.com/ollie-the-owl-christmas-crochet-along/ I crocheted the parrot 10 years ago from a paid pattern, I don't remember where I bought the pattern. The doll was purchased as is through AliExpress.
I've been buying the cheap pillows from discount stores for years to use for their stuffing, as well as saving all my yarn trimmings to use for smaller projects
Hi Mikey! I've done this! Bought a finished pillow to actually stuff a pillow I made. I did not love the density of regular from the bag filler, it was too soft. I loved the density of the poly pieces. However, you have to have a liner for each piece, for example, a doll. The stuffing pieces are so random in size and shape, you run the risk of tiny pieces working its way out of your stitches. Even a nylon stocking liner could be "picked" through. You could never pack this densely enough so tiny fingers could not pick it out. This is so hazardous for small children picking the pieces out. And they will! (My granddaughter loved to dismantle her stuffies in every way!) Caution is definitely needed with any stuffing in any way, shape, or form. I don't mean to rain on your great idea of buying a completed pillow to use the dense stuffing, but please be cautious with what and who you are making any amigurumi for. Thank you, Mikey, we just love you! 💖
Hi I'm new to watching utube and watching you has been so much fun I've been crocheting all my life and made a lot of beautiful things through the years and had put it down for a while and watching you has given me the push to start again and I am thanking you for that and to tell you how great you are and to tell you how sorry and angry I'm that you are going through such bullshit from very ignorant people. And just hearing this in this day and age is so ridiculous I wish you all the best iam looking forward to learning more from you are a great teacher all my best to you Andrea from NYC
This is brilliant! I hadn't even considered using shredded foam for stuffing but it makes perfect sense. I have a shredded foam pillow for my bed that I use every night so this is brilliant!
What a great idea!! Not only do you get good 'fil, but also purse/pocket liners from the linen! ("hmmmmm..." she thinks as she looks at those pillow 'blanks' she bought for no reason except for being a good deal 🤔)
This is a brilliant tip!! I'm starting on an evil eye pillow and haven't even thought about the filling yet, but I know the tip about memory foam will make all the difference. Thanks, Mikey!!
I'm buying pillows in Ikea for years - for stuffing 😁, in our country was polyfil sooo expensive and it was not easy to get it (now it is much better), so pillows were the best possible choice 👍🏻
I made small gnomes and using polyester polyester fill was a nightmare...so used cotton balls for stuffing them...these gnomes are 6" tall..so the cotton helped them sit up so their chain legs could dangle..I made over 300 of these dudes and dudettes!..lol
Thanks for the tips. I feel like you could use the pillow fabric for a bag lining after you take the stuffing out. That way none of it is going to waste.
I use my old pillows... I open them up and peel all the compressed material off the outside. What I'm left with is a chunk of medium density fill... I just pull at it and fluff it up a bit and it works PERFECTLY!
Thank you for this video!! My daughter has a giant dragon and it's a bit too soft and has gotten softer. I was trying to figure out how I could make if firmer without breaking the bank and that foamy stuff is s great idea!! Mikey and the crochet crowd for the win!!
I chop up yarn to use as stuffing. Works well when I know white fiber fil will show through the stitches. Great for stash busting. Also bed pillows from Walmart come in various densities, are larger, and cost a lot less than decorative pillows or pillow forms.
I bought a pillow as a last resort because I couldn't find polyfil a while back, and I loved it! It was only $4! Much cheaper than the bag of polyfil. I will likely never buy polyfil again
I go to lowes and buy a sheet of foam and cut and shred it myself and also I go to Walmart and buy bed pillows to use for stuffing. Poly fill is crazy expensive here in Canada.
If your like me and wash your bed pillows. Sometimes you can wash them and they don't back into shape. I just reuse the stuffing inside. I've done that a few times. Helps save $$$.
I always only use poly fill from a pillow. I have done so, as it is cheaper than the bags of polyfil. Whatever pillows that are on sale are the ones I buy. Plus, living in the country, with not lots of city variety of craft shops available, I am limited, and works just fine in Amigurumi.
How would the Crushed Walnut pieces work, like you would fill a pin cushion with? Or would that all fall out, short of using a fabric to line the inside of the amigurumi?
Ollie the Owl is on our Channel and Website if you want it. It's free. The Pirate Parrot I bought the pattern online about 10 years ago, I don't recall where I got it. The doll is a finished item I bought through AliExpress.com
Can also check out your opshops, thrift shops etc as they have pillow and cushion inserts that are brand new and have never been used. Sometimes they may also have either full or part used packs of fibre fill. My Mum and her friends knit and crochet for charities and it saves them a lot on fibre fill. Thanks Mike, now I know what to use to stuff the dolls with.

Thank you for this insight! I really try to gear my creations towards children, so this is valuable information.
You can use the pillow fabric to create a liner!

I've ruined quite a few projects with polyfil. Most wound up in the trash. Wonderful helpful hint. Thank you very much. I'll try again.
TY for the tips Mikey ! You bring up things no one else does. I always learn something when i watch this channel. Take care !

What a grand amigurumi hack! Thank you!
Ty for the overview. I like to use the fabric scraps from my quilting, mixing it in with the polyfills.
What a great idea!!

Thank you for the stuffing lesson. Learned a lot
Your secret is safe with me! I'll be hitting the outdoor furniture section at the end of the season this year. Thanks!
I had no idea about the memory foam filler, thank you!

Love your pirate owl.
This is very helpful information. Thank you
Thank you for sharing this!
I have used the bags of what they sell at Christmas for snow decorating. It is more dense than regular polyfill.
Thank you for that information on shredded memory foam. You are doing a wonderful job at the Crochet Crowd!!!
Thanks for the info.
Thank you Mikey! Laurel M
Thank you for the info. I have had problems with floppiness and not enough fill being used.
I’ve bought bed pillows for the polyfil before. They work great!
Novel idea. Thank you, Mikey! ❤
Thank you, Mikey, I really appreciate that And it's good to know that also make doll and animals
That’s some really great ideas. Thanks Mickey! Hugs. I love that parrot pirate, so cute lol ( with delight)💜
What a great idea to use pillows!
I had saveed my couch pillows because they had green stuffing in them. Different texture as well. I use that stuffing for my baby yodas.
Thank you. This was so helpful as I begin making some Menagerie Birds ....thanks.
I had no idea about the memory foam! I'll keep an eye out for it next time i go shopping. Thanks, Mikey!

I do with dollarama cushions as well!!!
Interesting 🤨 thanks for educating me. Very much appreciate your video 😊
What a clever idea thank you Mickey.
Thank you so much Mikey. I did not know some of the stuff .
Thanks Mikey❤
Thanks so much for this tip! Brilliant solutions.
Great idea ❤

I was replacing my couch and love seat and saved all the poly-fil before I took to the the dump I have 10 trashbags full still lol
You always have the best secrets, thanks for this advice, very very helpful! ❤❤❤
Mikey,thanks... by the way you are so perfect in many ways. Your human so you have imperfections but we all do. ❤you and thanks for sharing.
hiya mikey! great minds think alike! xoxo
Thanks.
Brilliant
Great piece Mikey as just getting into Amagrumi, so far stuffing has come with the few kits I've brought. ❤
What a great idea!!! Thanks
Thank you ✨️

Great idea 😂
Love this tip! Thabk you 🥰
cool....... as to home dec and ripping apart pillows... a lot of bed pillows are made with the shredded foam, too... can always cannibalize them, too
Try going to quilting shops you can get there scraps not sure how much but my grandmother got some for stuffing bunnies for Easter one year
I have no aversion either. If I find I'm out I go to the craft closet and grab a pillow form and use the filling. 😊
Great info, thank you, not sure if we have 3 grades in the UK, but i will definitely check them out!
Thank you Mikey for the information. I use the first poly-fil you showed. Is the shredded memory foam washable? Can it be dried in the dryer?
When I use the polyfil I take a handful and then pull it apart a few times. It takes away some of the expansion problem and puts air in it.
How would the Crushed Walnut pieces work, like you would fill a pin cushion with? Or would that all fall out, short of using a fabric to line the inside of the amigurumi?
I would put that in a sock or something encased and not allow it to be free inside the character without some kind of barrier. Nylons may work too.
I buy pre- made pillows grom my resale shop and tip it open. 50 cents even for yhe huge pillows is a great deal.
These are so cute! I’ve got to make some. Where are these patterns available?
Ollie the Owl is on our Channel and Website if you want it. It's free. The Pirate Parrot I bought the pattern online about 10 years ago, I don't recall where I got it. The doll is a finished item I bought through AliExpress.com
I always buy the 2$ pillows at walmart for stuffing. Works just fine.
I must admit I have used the stuffing out of pillows many a time. 1 it is cheaper 2 you seem to get a lot more. It works just the same
I go to my local fabric store and buy a king size quilt batt and just pull off parts and then tear them to bits for my stuffing.
What does one stuff the NICU octopus with for such firmness? My grandsons could be used as a weapon...
Do we search shredded memory foam on Amazon?
Yes. Sure do.
Can also check out your opshops, thrift shops etc as they have pillow and cushion inserts that are brand new and have never been used. Thanks Mike, now I know what to use to stuff the dolls with.
Is there a pattern for the first owl shown plz?
For sure. It's here: thecrochetcrowd.com/ollie-the-owl-christmas-crochet-along/
Hmmm, wonder how many of us are looking at that old memory foam mattress. If you're missing one. I won't say anything. Blessings, thanks Mikey.
What about mixing memory foam with polyfil?
Up to you. Try it. I've not done that.
Your secret is safe with me!
Just an FYI on the shredded memory foam. It sticks to everything and you will have a huge mess.
I always use pillows😅
I only use pillows for years
Oh heck yea, I will buy pillows from the thrift and do this.
I but my pillow stuffing from family dollar.
Your secret is safe with me 🤐
What a fantastic idea. I learn so much from you and appreciate it!😊
Mikey, these are excellent ideas!!🤗❤
