Washing Stinky Yarn

  • I needed yarn and went to the thrift store to pick up some yarn. I was able to find what I needed. Ensure the yarn you will wash is machine washable for this. I'm not responsible if you don't know the contents of your yarn and it ruins the yarn.
Put yarn in pantyhose to ensure it won't unravel.

UPDATE: The next day, I checked the balls as I laid it on a counter top. The balls are dry. The excessive moisture evaporated just fine. They are good to go.

I washed yarn once and put it in a lingerie bag wrapped tightly with rubber bands. I put it in the dryer too. But it didn’t dry completely. I put it in front of a box fan to get it dry. It took about 24 hrs before I was sure it was dry. There’s nothing worse than spending the time to wash and dry the yarn only to have it sour because it wasn’t fully dry.

This would have saved me so much time! I hand washed a bunch of yarn in vinegar and soap to get cigarette smell out. Took forever but it worked perfectly with one wash I couldn't smell cigarettes anymore. I gently squeezed the excess water out and towel pressed them before letting them air dry.. so you could towel press it to help get some more moisture out before letting it air dry.

I think application of the hose would work similar to how a lady would put them on 😂 open the hose, putting your arm all the way to the toe of the hose, then scrunch the hose from the waistband to the toe seam, put the yarn at the seam and hold it in place as you pull the hose over it, you could then twist and use that as a seam to add in additional skeins in the same way.

Yeah.. So.. uhm.. I wish I had bought pantyhoses for when I wanted to wash some of my yarn stash after a moving where juice was spilled over a whole moving box with yarn.. I just put all of it, in different washing nets (those with zippers for bras) and gave it a delicate wash on 40. Everything had come out of the zippers, the nets were ripped apart and I was left with a whole machine full of a mixed ball of yarn from hell. That I today, 4 years later, are still every now and then unravelling yarn from when I get to it. I refuse to throw it out, because there were some expensive ice-yarn in it. But I remember how I had this huge ball of filtered mess hanging for weeks, since I couldn't tumble dry it, because not all of the yarn could handle that.
This is the best tip ever with the pantyhose. Thank you!
