Washing Stinky Yarn

- I needed yarn and went to the thrift store to pick up some yarn. I was able to find what I needed. Ensure the yarn you will wash is machine washable for this. I'm not responsible if you don't know the contents of your yarn and it ruins the yarn.
Put yarn in pantyhose to ensure it won't unravel.

UPDATE: The next day, I checked the balls as I laid it on a counter top. The balls are dry. The excessive moisture evaporated just fine. They are good to go.
I use Knee Hi stockings instead of the whole pair of hose.
@@RandeT73 great idea!
Knee highs would work well too and stretch enough you could tie it for larger balls of yarn, so they don't come out
@@CanadianLittleBrat another great idea!
Great idea. Would the addition of fabric softener be helpful.
Slide your hand all the way to the toes of the hose. Then grab the yarn and fold the yarn into the hose.
That's so smart. I didn't think of that.
@@TheCrochetCrowdyou wouldn't 😂
That’s freaking brilliant!! I know this will sound awful but that’s how I pick up the dog poop when I’m walking him lol but I never thought of it with the pantyhose
I was thinking the same thing while watching Mikey struggle. Oh well now he knows lol.
Same way I do pillowcases!
Make sure the yarn is machine washable and dryable for this. If you are using 100% wool, it will most likely felt.
You would have one heck of a dryer ball.😂
Using pantyhose to keep the yarn compact is a great idea! Thank you for the tip. 😊💗☕️🍪
Wait! Your dryer detects the clothes are dry?!? I need that in my life! Thanks, Mikey! Great "stinky yarn " hack 😊
Mikey, I loved this video! So useful to know this. I was always hesitant to buy yarn at a thrift store cause I could tell it smelled weird but it was much cheaper. My favorite part of this is you swinging those balls of yarn 😂😂
Knee highs are a good idea too, but a tip for the hose I have is to put them on your hand first then hold your skein as you pull the hose up over it 😊 Thanks for the great washing idea!
This was my thought, a combo glove/foot glide technique.
I used vegetable nylon bags with a drawstring. 😊It allowed me to stuff 2 or more skeins that weren’t a mess to begin with. Highly recommend using vinegar as a presoak. Vinegar eliminates all orders.
I love the panty hose tip.
I had wondered how to wash stinky yarn. Thank you!
Mikey, you are the greatest, and you have so much knowledge. I appreciate you lots.
Very helpful. I sometimes purchase yarn from the thrift store and would always have to wash it after the project was finished. I like your way better. No stinky yarn to work with.👍
That’s what I thought I had to do too! Lol no one wants to work with stinky yarn 🧶 what a turn off haha
Such an awesome tip. I never would have thought of this myself. Thanks for sharing Mikey, you're awesome!
❤❤❤ I wondered if that really worked. Thanks for testing it out and sharing the results for us. 😊
Hi Mikey. Great video. Also you can use a mesh bag to wash the balls in. I've done this b4 and turns out great. With the panty hose if you run your hand to the bottom of the toe then grab the ball and then pull the hose back over the yarn. That will make it easier. Love you 💜
Thank you Mikey, I've never washed yarn before I used it. I love your videos they're very informative and comical. Have a beautiful day
I’m trying not to laugh. Thanks for the info. Love you and your style❤
There should be a warning on your videos! Just woken, made my morning coffee, switched you on and spluttered it all down myself! 👀🤣🤣🤣🤣
I washed yarn once and put it in a lingerie bag wrapped tightly with rubber bands. I put it in the dryer too. But it didn’t dry completely. I put it in front of a box fan to get it dry. It took about 24 hrs before I was sure it was dry. There’s nothing worse than spending the time to wash and dry the yarn only to have it sour because it wasn’t fully dry.
This would have saved me so much time! I hand washed a bunch of yarn in vinegar and soap to get cigarette smell out. Took forever but it worked perfectly with one wash I couldn't smell cigarettes anymore. I gently squeezed the excess water out and towel pressed them before letting them air dry.. so you could towel press it to help get some more moisture out before letting it air dry.
I think application of the hose would work similar to how a lady would put them on 😂 open the hose, putting your arm all the way to the toe of the hose, then scrunch the hose from the waistband to the toe seam, put the yarn at the seam and hold it in place as you pull the hose over it, you could then twist and use that as a seam to add in additional skeins in the same way.
I always tied my yarn in pillow case. Love this ideal much better! Thank you! ❤
Thank you Mikey for showing us this…. Now I can wash my washable yarn that I buy at garage sale & second hand stores. 🇨🇦🩵🧶
Great video, had no clue we could wash yarn before using it! Thanks
Great idea! Certainly looks much easier than winding onto a swift then hand washing and hanging to dry. I am going to try using my mesh laundry bag to wash all the yarns I bought yesterday from thrift store as I no longer own any pantyhose.
Not sure if people already suggested it, but you can use knee hi stockings to make it easier and works just as well...I just knot the ends loosely.
I have some yarn that had something spilled on it and I haven't been able to figure out how to wash it w/out it getting all tangled. The pantyhose idea is an absolutely fantastic idea. Thank you for sharing this tip.
Yeah.. So.. uhm.. I wish I had bought pantyhoses for when I wanted to wash some of my yarn stash after a moving where juice was spilled over a whole moving box with yarn.. I just put all of it, in different washing nets (those with zippers for bras) and gave it a delicate wash on 40. Everything had come out of the zippers, the nets were ripped apart and I was left with a whole machine full of a mixed ball of yarn from hell. That I today, 4 years later, are still every now and then unravelling yarn from when I get to it. I refuse to throw it out, because there were some expensive ice-yarn in it. But I remember how I had this huge ball of filtered mess hanging for weeks, since I couldn't tumble dry it, because not all of the yarn could handle that.
This is the best tip ever with the pantyhose. Thank you!
What a great idea! I have a bag of yarn that needs washing and I had no idea how I was going to manage it! Thank you for this awesome idea!!
you can gather the hose into your hands, working down to the toes. slip it over the end of the ball and pull it over the yarn. thanks for all the info on this!
That is incredible 👏 THANK YOU FOR THIS TIP I Always wanted to wash my thrift yarn before I used it but didn't know how to keep it from becoming a giant yarn barf!!! Panty hose...I never thought! But how simple🤯💥💨
Wow I would have never thought of washing yarn in panty hose. I will try whenever I buy any smelly yarn ❤
Mikey you are always there for us less creative minds … ty for great tip
Great tip for washing smelly yarn. Thank you for sharing. 💜🙏🏻
Hi Mikey. Thanks for this neat idea. Seeing as I don't dress up for going anywhere, you have given me a reason not to throw out pantyhose. 🙂
Darling, get knee high nylon stockings. They will accommodate one skein each. Here in the states, we can buy them by the bag full. Good luck sonny
You can use knee highs for smaller skeins like Caron Simply Soft. I tie a knot in the end so they can't get washed out of the hosiery. Works great with washable yarns!
Wonderful tip!! 🥰
I had no idea you could wash yarn. I thought I'd have to throw away my smelly yarn! WOO HOO!!
I'm so glad that you made this video. I have yarn that definitely smells like a basement. I would have never come up with the panty hose solution. I just put an air freshener in the tote with the yarn and no, that didn't work. Thanks Mikey!
Love your videos!! Absolutely love your laugh. ❤
Wow! What a marvelous idea! Thank you!
Never new you could do this thank you mikey for the tip.
Thank you for the excellent tip! Back in the day when I used to wear pantyhose we would grab them at the top and slowly gather/scrunch the hose up a little at a time in our hands until we reached the bottom. Then you could stick your foot in the toe portion and pull them up. But I think I like the method mentioned above better!
Wow. Thank you for this video tutorial 👍🏼 I don’t think I would’ve ever considered doing this
Thank you! I have always passed up yarn in the Thrift store because of the smell.
What a great tip, Mike! Thanks for sharing.
hahaha you are so funny. Thank you, now I also know how to get my older yarn clean again.
So smart! Thank you!
Thank you Mikey for makings me laugh😂, you are too too darling love you. Oh and thank you for this washing tutorial....still laughing 😅😂😅😅😅😅
Cool way to wash a skein of yarn. Thanks for the tip.
What a great video! I never thought about doing that, and I'm sure many others didn't either. Thanks so much!
“Don’t try this at home folks. Trained professional idiot!” 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 You are too funny.
What a great idea, thanks!
I never thought to clean yarn this way if it doesnt smell good. Ill have to try this. Thanks for the tip
That is the greatest tip EVER!! ❤
Thanks, Mikey ❤
Great idea, I get a lot of donated yarn (make charity stuff) and often it smells nasty. Great way to save it. I hated working with it smelly and then washing it.
Great idea!❤
Neat idea, thank you for sharing!
Great idea! Even knee highs will work! Although, I've never had stinky yarn 😅
What a great tip! Thanks for sharing it, Mikey!
😂 you crack me up! Thanks for your tips and tricks!
Saw stinky yard in the heading and immediately need to watch cuz I have questions.
Genius idea!
Luv ir, u taught me something about washing yarn with the panties hose. Thank u
You are a lifesaver.
That was SO clever! THANK YOU!
What a great idea!! I ordered some Etsy and they sprayed it with Freebreeze and I didn’t want to hand wash it.
Great tip! Thanks for these videos.
I leave the damp washed skeins sitting right over a floor duct overnight and the air from the a/c or the furnace dries it perfectly.
Oh, how I wish I knew this tip a few weeks ago!!! What a mess I made. Thanks Mikey this one was great as usual!!!
That's an awesome tip. Thank you so much! Only tip I have for the pantyhose is to use both hands to cinch up to the toe and slide it over much like putting on a sock. Thanks again, now I don't have to wait until the project is done to wash it, after all the while touching the funky yarn! 😂
I assume this may help with shrinkage. As you explained the shrinkage in another video. Thanks for the handy idea. 🫶🏻
Mikey you are sooooo funny, what a smashing idea great tip xx
So cool! I wondered if that was possible. You show us the best stuff!!
Thanks!
Thank you for the tip. I apply tips to our operational budget for the free tutorials. Thanks so much.
GREAT IDEA !!! Thank you for sharing.
Thank you so much!
Mike, huge thanks for sharing how to wash a stinky ball of yarn. I'm thinking that this could also work for yarn that is stiff to siften it up.
Thanks again Mike.
I'm from Brisbane Australia 🇦🇺 and love your videos. You have taught me sooo much. ❤
I’ve used pillow cases. Never thought about using pantyhose.
Brilliant idea!
Thanks for the idea.
Great idea! Thank you!
Genius Mickey
I have to be honest i rolled when you were playing with the yarn lol
Mikey, I'm always checking out Goodwill online for yarn deals. Thrift are the best places to find vintage yarns. I do the same washing as you, whether the yarn smells or not. But instead of using panty hose, I use knee-hi. Some smells aka cigarette smoke may require multiple washes. LOL at the Madea reference. I got the picture in my head now.
Great tip ! Thanks so much for all you do for us😊
Informative and a few chuckles.😂👍
What a great idea. If you get oversized pantyhose they can be useful to wear in winter if one has to be outdoors a lot. I learned that from a hunting magazine. If your legs are hairy it might be a little itchy, but you'd be warm. Thanks for all of your terrific content.
I hank mine and wash it in the sink. then dry outside and reball or cake it. This is a great option!!
Thankyou Mikey I will try this. What a great tip
I use knee high hose. Will save you the struggle lol. Great idea!
Omg. I just had to do this the other day. I ordered 2 balls of blanket yarn thru Amazon and one came from their warehouse, the other separately, packaged in China. That one smelled sooo bad. Kinda like must chemicals. Just put the whole ball in a mesh bag and washed and dried it. Worked great.
THANK YOU! I really did not know how to do this.
Great idea.
I usually buy knee high stockings to wash mine in . I buy them at the dollar stores .
Sometimes even new yarn from the store doesn't smell the way I think it should either. This is a great idea
I think you could also cut the legs into shorter lengths and just tie off the ends. That might make it easier/faster to get the skeins in the hose.
Great idea!
I use knee high hosiery. Much easier to start at the toe.
I also put the giant pound balls in a knee high stocking. It honestly helps it to not get tangled. The reduction of yarn barf is truly significant. It still happens, but so much easier to contend with.
Thanks for the tip!!
Clever clever😊💖
