I never cried watching this scene as a kid but now as an adult, I cry every single time. It's so beautifully sad, Oliver getting left behind and trying to live on his own.
I’ve lived in NYC for 16 years and have recently been re-examining my love affair with the city. “How can anyone stay starry-eyed when it’s raining cats and dogs outside and the rain is saying ‘Now you’re on your own.’” That’s gut-wrenchingly poignant and so relatable.
The two biggest reasons why this film was so overlooked: 1. It came out at the end of Disney’s Bronze Age, right before the Renaissance. 2. It came out the same weekend as The Land Before Time.
Depends who you’re talking to. Quite a lot of people consider Great Mouse Detective (1986) to be the start of the Disney Renaissance; whole other’s believe Little Mermaid (1989) to be the start. There’s a documentary on Disney+ about the Renaissance - Waking Sleeping Beauty - which includes Mouse Detective and Oliver and Company as part of the Renaissance period

One of Huey Lewis's best songs for this movie. It should've been on the greatest hits album. Poor Oliver was helpless and had to find some way to survive.
Unfortunately he didn’t write it and therefore didn’t have the rights to it, which is why it’s not on his greatest hits albums. Same thing with Why Should I Worry.... Billy Joel sang it for the film, but he didn’t write it
@@OchoAndOrtizDisneyPod Many of Huey's hits weren't written by him, or anyone in the band though, right? Heart And Soul, Hope You Love Me Like You Say You Do, Doing It All For My Baby, Do You Believe In Love, Jacob's Ladder, Perfect World among others, were all written by outsiders, yet were on their greatest hits albums. Including his duet with Gwyneth Paltrow on Duets. They did a fine cover of the Smokey Robinson classic 'Cruisin' and it did appear on their 2006 Greatest Hits album. I adore this song myself though.
Quite an inspirational song, I always feel like I can go out there and do anything I put my mind to. The lyrics are wonderful and I just love the melody. Beautiful. I always get excited whenever I hear the horns at the beginning.
As a kid, I was spoiled. I had this vhs, my sister and I would watch it all the time. I didn’t understand how much it would mean to me years later. We were kids that had some cool parents. Because they showed us Hughie Lewis way before this film was a thing. Anyway, I keep coming back because it says so much about us. I often wish we were kids for a moment. Just so we could see everything again.
this was my favorite movie as a kid I would watch it over and over again cause it never got old. I wish I could find this movie again and watch it for nostalgia.
I too have a deep connection to my childhood regarding this movie, as well as many more such as All Dogs Go To Heaven and Homeward Bound series. Much love to all the people behind the Oliver and Company production and the fans!

why is this song making me sob??? I used to listen to this movie's soundtrack so much as a child, I think it manifested me to move across country to NYC as an adult. Been here 12 years now (with three kitties!)
Great song!! It got stuck in my head as a kid. I then watched the credits as a teenager and was so thrilled to see that Howard Ashman wrote this song! You can really tell this movie paved the way for the comeback of the animated musical. It’s a great soundtrack!
As a 26 year old Male, I tear up every time i hear this song. In my opinion, one of, if not the best disney songs EVER!! Harmony and vocals match up perfectly!!
Classic Huey. He always got a lot of flak for his vocals (he and The News struggled to get a contract early on because apparently he 'couldn't sing at all'), despite having one of the most unique and powerfully voices ever. Blue-eyed soul at its finest.

This song is one of my favorites I can listen to this over and over and I will never get tired of it. I grew up watching Oliver and company it's a classic!
Same here. When I was younger I had a stuffed cat rattle and named it after Oliver (because I loved the movie and it had the same fur color as the protagonist of the film).
I was born in 1984. Now for me the 90's held most of my childhood memories as the first 5 years of my life is fuzzy or lost. However this movie is the very first movie I can hazily recall seeing in the theaters. I don't know if it was my first cinema and disney movie I ever saw but it's the one I can recall that i saw. The late 80's stuff I can recall: This movie, The Little Mermaid, a soundtrack from Walt Disney World Resort called "The Music of Disneyland, Walt Disney World and EPCOT Center", and the beginnings of the wonderful "The Disney Afternoon" block and Disney Adventures Magazine and comics.
I used to watch this movie with and sing the songs to my cat, who passed a few years back, and many years too soon. This song along with the Jenny number are so heart wrenching for me to hear again, but... It makes me feel like my best buddy is here again. We grew up together for 11 years, and he should still actually be here, but.. our neighbor's car had other plans, apparently.. Miss you, buddy.. We'll always be good company.
You'll be together again one day. The Sovereign LORD and Master Creator of the Universe also loves the animals He put onto this world and blessed them before He even made mankind! Take heart; The God of Love is compassionate and filled with mercy.

I had a bad day today and i have never seen this movie, except through commercials from other Disney movies. So I thought I'd check something different on Disney+ and I cannot believe how hard I cried at this opening. 😭😭😭😭I hope that things get turned around soon. Idk if I can take anymore 😭😭😭😭
20 people have no heart. GREAT opening. One of Disney's best post-Walt animated films, and came out at the beginning of their second golden age in animation.
Especially the lines "If they pick you out, you're on your way to a 'once upon a time' that never ends" and "'Cause a dream's no crime". Just in case the rest of this song doesn't give me chills, at least THOSE lines do.
I just turned 37 and i remembered 31 years ago, i was 6 when i saw this movie in theaters 3 times when i lived in Omaha even after New Years day and dug the movie and i had merchandise like 2 shirts, PJs, the CD soundtrack (my first CD and got it for Christmas that year), Mcdonald toys, Mcdonald ornuments, coloring books, junior novel, plush Oliver and all that. I remembered feeling disappointed it never came out on video for years as i wanted it the next year on video but i also saw the re-issue in theaters in middle school and remembered my friends who also remembered seeing the movie when it first came out too as they too were pissed it never hit video and got the VHS for christmas when it came out and now have it on blu-ray as i enjoy it for the nostalgia. I also remembered seeing Great Mouse Detective when it originally came out when i was 4 when i lived in St Louis 3 times and also saw the re-issues of classic Disney animated films even 1987'ss re-issues of Aristocats to Fox and the Hound 88 re-issue, i even saw Roger Rabbit in theaters in Omaha and also saw Rescuers 89 re-issue and Little Mermaid 2 times when i was 7 plus had Mcdonald toys. Yet Black Cauldron was the first movie i saw in theaters at age 3. One of my favorite Disney animated movies and still enjoy it as an adult as i got it on blu-ray, i can't wait to meet Joey Lawrence in person at the Santa Fe Comic Con this october and get his autograph on my Oliver blu and a photo with him.
I always wanted to see this movie as a child but never got a chance too but hey 39 years later . I finally got to see it and as they say better late then never . Great movie and song i love the nostalgia vibes I get hearing this song !
Thank you Disney app, so a little back story (ahem). I use to always see this movie on my goofy movie tape back in 1996, and always wanted to see what it was about cause it looked like a fun movie, I was 1 when it came out( was born Jan 1988) so years go by I’m an adult ; was trying to find something for me and my gf and kids to watch, and saw this, now not only do I like the movie I Love this song.
The first lyrics Howard Ashman wrote for Disney. From here he would bring in Alan Menken to work on Little Mermaid. He also pitched Aladdin as an animated musical asr well as some of it's songs before being brought in with Alan to rescue the floundering non musical production of Beauty and the Beast...
For pitching Aladdin as an animated musical, it is sad to know he didn't see it come to fruition, much like Walt himself didn't see the end product of "The Jungle Book." I know, as on the end credits of "Beauty and the Beast" (at least my special edition copy, not sure if it was on the original VHS release) "To the man who gave a mermaid her voice and a beast his soul, we will be forever grateful." - Howard Ashman, 1950 - 1991.
This was always such a great movie, but this song is even better, because it has an important message: Never give up! Never stop dreaming, never stop pursuing what is important to you. Dare to dream.
I never cried watching this scene as a kid but now as an adult, I cry every single time. It's so beautifully sad, Oliver getting left behind and trying to live on his own.

I believe that this was the first movie i ever saw in my life, and the line "Now youre on your way, to a once upon a time that never ends" is still one of my favorites
First movie you saw in theaters?
no im only 14 but when i was a baby this and robin hood were my favs
Were you born in 2003? it would explain your age. :)
I am a 30 year old man in the military deployed....this opening still makes me cry like a little kid but gawd I love this song still!!!
"How can anyone stay starry-eyed
When it's rainin' cats and dogs outside -
And you realize - now you're on your own...."
The lyric says "And the rain has said 'Now you're on your own'".
I adore this song myself though.
this song makes me so amazed but emotional at the same time, this film was ABSOLUTELY great for its time
Quite an inspirational song, I always feel like I can go out there and do anything I put my mind to. The lyrics are wonderful and I just love the melody. Beautiful. I always get excited whenever I hear the horns at the beginning.
Molly Helm Same here.

Imanol Lopez Romero:👋 hi in 2020, do you have boyfriend?
As a kid, I was spoiled. I had this vhs, my sister and I would watch it all the time. I didn’t understand how much it would mean to me years later. We were kids that had some cool parents. Because they showed us Hughie Lewis way before this film was a thing. Anyway, I keep coming back because it says so much about us. I often wish we were kids for a moment. Just so we could see everything again.
this was my favorite movie as a kid I would watch it over and over again cause it never got old. I wish I could find this movie again and watch it for nostalgia.
i love this song and it was my fav to
I have it on VHS, and it's actually an excellent Disney movie. It's not as bad as some people say it is.
I still watch it over and over, this is an all time favorite for me. :)
i have it on VHS as well, im surprised it still works. this is one of the movies disney made before their downfall.
yeah that was doing the good years of Disney like do you remember this other move the aristocats
I too have a deep connection to my childhood regarding this movie, as well as many more such as All Dogs Go To Heaven and Homeward Bound series. Much love to all the people behind the Oliver and Company production and the fans!
This movie has some of the best music of any 80s film. Makes me feel right at home.

I can safely say that this is one of my favorite Disney soundtracks.

Yes!
In the Beggining of Oliver and Company (Disney), the opening song talks about how life can be rough in New York City.
In the Beggining of The Secret Life of Pets (Illumination), the opening song talks about New York City being a happy place.
By the way, I love Oliver and Company. Better than Secret life of Pets.
The Awesone Bat Yeah, Oliver and Company is way more honest about its portrayal of NYC, how it's a rough and gritty place. The Secret Life Of Pets makes it looks like it's some kind of beautiful paradise, and as someone who lives close to NYC, I guarantee you it's definitely not a paradise.
the 80's was the best decade for music, hands down.

Loved this movie as a kid, but rewatching it as an adult gives me too many feels.
Same here.
Watched it for the first time about a month ago. Cried my eyes out because of how I'm feeling these days.
why is this song making me sob??? I used to listen to this movie's soundtrack so much as a child, I think it manifested me to move across country to NYC as an adult. Been here 12 years now (with three kitties!)
Cause a dream’s no crime, Keep the dream alive, dreaming is still how the strong survive. One of the best lines in the song hands down
The greatest opening song from any Disney film. Yes, including Tarzan, Lion King & Toy Story.
Facts
It’s enough to make even a grown man cry
I love this song since I was a little boy in the 90s!!!! I had the vhs, and it was a great movie!!!!!
This movie is a part of my childhood, even though I wasn’t a kid in the 80s my sister (who is a big Disney fanatic) showed this movie to me and my family and fell in love with it ever since! Love this song, thank u and love u sis!
One of the most underrated songs in the whole of Disney’s catalogue
Agreed. Oliver was a great Disney movie and it’s underrated.
Now it's always once upon a time, in New York City
It's a big old, bad old, tough old town, it's true
But beginnings are contagious there
They're always setting stages there
They're always turning pages there for you
Ain't it great the way it all begins in New York City
Right away, you're making time, and making friends
No one cares where you were yesterday
If they pick you out, you're on your way
To a once upon a time that never ends
So Oliver, don't be shy
Get out there and go and try
Believin' that you're the guy
They're dying to see
'Cause a dream's no crime
Not once upon a time
Once upon a time in New York City
If it's always once upon a time in New York City
Why does nightfall leave you feeling so alone
How could any one stay starry-eyed
When it's raining cats and dogs outside
And the rain has said "now you're on your own"
So Oliver don't be scared
Though yesterday no one cared
They're getting your place prepared
Where you want to be
Keep your dream alive
Dreaming is still how the strong survive
Once upon a time in New York City
Keep your dream alive
Dreaming is still how the strong survive
Once upon a time in New York City
Keep your dream alive
Dreaming is still how the strong survive
Once upon a time in New York City
And it's always once upon a time, in New York City
This song is pure gold!
This song always gives me goosebumps because it takes me back to my childhood when my granny would babysit me. It’s like I get to travel back in time for a moment.
This song is one of my favorites I can listen to this over and over and I will never get tired of it. I grew up watching Oliver and company it's a classic!

Imanol Lopez Romero: how old are you and do you have boyfriend?
Same here. When I was younger I had a stuffed cat rattle and named it after Oliver (because I loved the movie and it had the same fur color as the protagonist of the film).
So Oliver…..

Best verses of the song
Yeah, I replayed that part like about 50 times.
This song matched the movie so well and I remember crying when I was 7 after seeing Oliver get rejected.
Times get tough. Like he sings, keep your dream alive, dreaming is still how the strong survive. Stay strong, you are epic!
Childhood memories 😍 " an amazing Soundtrack ❤❤❤❤ and movie ❤❤❤❤
I always did LOVE this movie during my 90's childhood and they really chose the RIGHT SINGER too!
During my late 80s childhood I dug this since 88
@@Johnlindsey289 Yeah same here cause I was born in 1984.
Mine's on May 26, 1983 (My Birthday), where I'd truly was born in 🗽, as well.
A truly iconic movie! Huey Lewis’s voice is so Dreamy
Nostalgia ❤
@@FFXI_Addict thanks, but I'm an atheist, and I have no reason to believe in a god. Pleaaase don't push stuff that onto me, hun! I know he's gone forever, and i have to accept it.. it hurts, but.. it's life
I love Oliver & Company so much I wish Disney would re-release the soundtrack cuz it came out a year before I was born and I absolutely love this movie
I'm not crying there's something in my eye 😭😭😭😭😭
Oh my gosh I love this movie! I was born in 1987 so I didn't see it till I got the VHS in 1996, but it became one of my fave Disney movies ever. Finally bought it on Blu-Ray last year (one of the 1st movies I ever owned on Blu-Ray) and it was so great to watch it again. This song always makes me want to cry and adopt a kitten :(
I havent seen the goofy movie in years.
I was born in 87
Born in 78 saw in 88
Born 82 and saw it three times in 88 in its original release and saw the 96 reissue at 14
We have the greatest childhood of all time, and we took it for granted.
Watching this on the 20th anniversary of 9/11, this seems to really resonate with me.
Hope you’re feeling better 🫂
Why does the song bring a tear to my eye every time
20 people have no heart. GREAT opening. One of Disney's best post-Walt animated films, and came out at the beginning of their second golden age in animation.
Yup great mouse detective, who framed roger rabbit and this with little mermaid saved Disney
1988 was a period where they were on to something great in Disney
Yup roger rabbit, Bambi 88 reissue, fox and hound 88 reissue and this
Especially the lines "If they pick you out, you're on your way to a 'once upon a time' that never ends" and "'Cause a dream's no crime". Just in case the rest of this song doesn't give me chills, at least THOSE lines do.
The opening scene with this song will ALWAYS make me cry. 😢
This movie has one of the best sound tracks Disney has to offer. Fan-tas-tic!! Love this song and all the rest!!!
I always cried at this song. Every time I watched this movie.
I always wanted to see this movie as a child but never got a chance too but hey 39 years later . I finally got to see it and as they say better late then never . Great movie and song i love the nostalgia vibes I get hearing this song !
I never knew Huey Lewis sang this! Oh my gosh I love him even more if that's even possible
Laurelizab neither did I
I recognized his voice instantly!
Omg I saw goofy movie in theaters when I turned 13 in Albuquerque with my buddy and his family and dug it
Underrated movie, so many feels
The great mouse detective and this and fox and hound and sword in stone and hunchback are underrated
I cannot get through this movie without losing it and hysterically sobbing
The first lyrics Howard Ashman wrote for Disney. From here he would bring in Alan Menken to work on Little Mermaid. He also pitched Aladdin as an animated musical asr well as some of it's songs before being brought in with Alan to rescue the floundering non musical production of Beauty and the Beast...
When Howard Ashman Wrote this I didn't know Huey Lewis Sung this.
For pitching Aladdin as an animated musical, it is sad to know he didn't see it come to fruition, much like Walt himself didn't see the end product of "The Jungle Book." I know, as on the end credits of "Beauty and the Beast" (at least my special edition copy, not sure if it was on the original VHS release)
"To the man who gave a mermaid her voice and a beast his soul, we will be forever grateful." - Howard Ashman, 1950 - 1991.
@@alking7655 I'm pretty sure that dedication to Howard Ashman has been in every version of Beauty and the Beast.
The first and only Disney movie to having bawling at the very beginning of the movie.
For sure shit hits hard
I remember this movie & this song. It’s motivational & sad at the same time. It makes me wanna go hold my kitty 🐈⬛ 😢
i showed this movie to my little brother and this scene made him sob. he felt so bad for oliver :(
This song sends me on a emotional journey
It's the very 1st time I listen to the original version and gosh it's stunning :O

Imanol Lopez Romero: how old are you and do you see Pete's Dragon 2016?
I liked this some a lot... I love even better the orchestrated version at the end of the movie. I remember this when I was a child.
People keep saying the movie up has you in tears within the first ten minutes this song and opening gets me in tears and it's not even 3 minutes 😭
beautiful childhood memories
This is my favorite song about NYC and it makes me sad no one ever remembers it
Timeless. Just… timeless.
Love this movie!!
Listening to this song right now! Brings me to tears! But a very touching song!
I adore this song and I found it a week ago
So sad song feeling like world has destoyed thanks to covid-19 all the people suffering the pain everyone pray for everyone 2021 will be good year 😢🙏😇
This was always such a great movie, but this song is even better, because it has an important message: Never give up! Never stop dreaming, never stop pursuing what is important to you. Dare to dream.
