I'd love to know how Howard Ashman and Barry Mann ended up collaborating. Ashman was a massive fan of the 1960s classic pop/rock songs of Barry Mann with lyrics by his wife Cynthia Weil (his Little Shop of Horrors score references their hits like Uptown), so I'm not surprised that he'd want to work with Mann... And they're a great fit. Mann/Weil by this time had become successful adult contemporary songwriters but ironically, just a year or two before, had written all of the songs for rival studio Bluth/Spielberg's An American Tail (including the massive hit, Somewhere Out There).
What I wanna know is if Howard had any direction for who/how to sing this. Did he request Huey, or did they just put ads out in the local rag? I’d love to hear the two of them chat about NYC and the feeling of the song.

If I ever get a chance to see Huey Lewis in person, I really wish He can really do the song the way he did on the film. I also wish he'd also say "So My Darling" or "So little one" or whatever, instead of saying Oliver in the song, or I can explain to a friend of mine, who's also named Oliver, if he's okay if he likes how the song goes before or how I would like Huey Lewis would sing it.
I remember my father would buy every VHS we could want. He had his monolith of films. Titles I would ask about sometimes. I watched RoboCop when I was too young, for example. I thank goodness for that. He had enough money to give my sister and I Oliver And Company. There’s so much in these words that isn’t just about the subject. It’s about the kids that grew up with it. I was able to go to New York in Manhattan island. Don’t think for one second I wasn’t thinking about where I came from. Thank goodness for my father. Thank goodness for my mom. There’s no way it would be the same without them. Thank goodness
To everyone who thinks that this generation’s children will never know about this movie or this song, gotta say: you’re wrong. I am gonna show this movie to my kids if I ever have ones.
This song made me cry for two reasons. 1) I am a New Yorker (though I live in Texas now). I bawled because this is the New York I remember. Not this Democrat shithole that has been overturned by crime, drugs, and Covid. I still remember walking in Manhattan with my grandfather in August 2001, literally days before 9/11. 2) This brought back flashbacks of my own personal struggles in life. Won’t go into details here, but it makes me really realize how far I have come in life.
I shed tears when I hear this song. The reason is because NYC is just not the way it was anymore. It is not safe: violent crime has become rampant and the subways are dangerous again. To me, it really is a “once upon a time.” However, I remain hopeful Eric Adams will turn things around, and I actually want to make a difference in trying to help the city get back to the way it was pre-Covid-19. We must “keep the dream alive!”
Everytime I think about the beginning of poor young Oliver all alone and hopeless, I cry my eyes out. I imagine that Huey Lewis was God watching over Oliver as he sung, thus later, finding someone like Jenny.
Now it's always once upon a time, in New York City
It's a big old, bad old, tough old town, it's true
But beginnings are contagious there
They're always setting stages there
They're always turning pages there for you
Ain't it great the way it all begins in New York City
Right away, you're making time, and making friends
No one cares where you were yesterday
If they pick you out, you're on your way
To a once upon a time that never ends
So Oliver, don't be shy
Get out there and go and try
Believin' that you're the guy
They're dying to see
'Cause a dream's no crime
Not once upon a time
Once upon a time in New York City
If it's always once upon a time in New York City
Why does nightfall find you feeling so alone
How could any one stay starry-eyed
When it's raining cats and dogs outside
And the rain has said "now you're on your own"
So Oliver don't be scared
Though yesterday no one cared
They're getting your place prepared
Where you want to be
Keep your dream alive
Dreaming is still how the strong survive
Once upon a time in New York City
Keep your dream alive
Dreaming is still how the strong survive
Once upon a time in New York City
Keep your dream alive
Dreaming is still how the strong survive
Once upon a time in New York City
And it's always once upon a time, in New York City

love the movie. Also love Huey singing the title song!
I can play this song on the piano already!
Why did they make a sequel this movie was great it was and still is my favorite movie ever since I was a kid
To everyone who thinks that this generation’s children will never know about this movie or this song, gotta say: you’re wrong. I am gonna show this movie to my kids if I ever have ones.
Me too bro
This song makes me cry its so amazing
Anyone who hate this movie would have to be crazy
I went to New York 8 years ago!.
This song makes me want to move to New York
Being 29 yrs old now I can really appreciate this
This song made me cry for two reasons.
Just gotta love Huey ❤
In 1988 I Saw Twin Tower
13 Years Before 9/11
Thought this was a fever dream (although I do remember why should I worry) and that I know Huey Lewis is involved
Im this movie makes me cry in the best way
Today I learned there was a music video for this song. ♥️
My favorite movie!!!!
Oliver and Company has not yet aired on Disney Channel in the Philippines.
Once upon a time, in New York City
This song gets harder to listen to as I get older. Who what of thought of actually growing up, first time watching this as kid.
I still love this song. Huey looked so good. The movie was so good. for Disney .
Too bad he didn't have a voice as a character
"Keep your dream alive, dreaming is still how the strong survive."
- Huey Lewis
So Oliver…..
1:15
2:25
Such great lines!!!
I did love this movie when disney was disney not like 2 day
I shed tears when I hear this song.
Little does past you know :(
Everytime I think about the beginning of poor young Oliver all alone and hopeless, I cry my eyes out. I imagine that Huey Lewis was God watching over Oliver as he sung, thus later, finding someone like Jenny.
Was that him filmed singing
Tate Anderson yep huey
When I first saw this as a kid I did cry alittle but then I enjoyed a funny movie
🐈🐕🐩 Oliver And Company *(1988)* 🗽🏙🌃
