Yes, It's typically used for snares and gtr amps but it was developed during 50-60s, that is, it was made for speech and acoustic instruments/string bands.
@@joomi They're versatile mics, no doubt about it, but I still think this use of it is pretty insane. But it just works really well in this particular case, because this style of music tends to be very midrangey and the tinnier kind of sound quality the 57 gives to acoustic instruments helps give it an overall old-timey radio vibe. Gillian and Dave also seem to use 57s and 58s pretty much exclusively for their live shows, probably for the same sort of reasons.
@Hamster3107 most of them -- they have all been playing together for years. If you catch the video for 'Wagon Wheel' you will see Dave Rawlings Gillian Welch at the 'carnies'.
This sounds silly to me. Gillian Welch's back catalogue is so much better than this - much more soul, more intelligent and poetic lyrics, better voice too.
this is pure americana plain and simple. this is a traditional song thats been played by some of the greats. most definitely near and dear to a lot of souls. educate yourself.
It's suppose to be fun. Not everything has to be heartbreak. They were having fun singing it too. Gillian's smile while singing this could melt a bear.
I can watch this a million times and still not get bored. Love these guys!
So good! I love the Dead version, but this is pretty damn good.
Dang this is good. Just saw Reina Del Cid and friends perform it this morning. I love both versions of this Grateful Dead classic.
Jesse Fuller song
Having a solid baritone voice enriches harmonies so much!
This is just one SM57 mic (A $100 dynamic mic typically used for close micing snare drums) used to record a whole band. And it sounds great!

@@ceilingsandfloors I agree, and yes they are great musicians.
My dad went to this concert in Portland and said they were all awesome!
Beautiful
good voices and the music makes me happy =)
I would love this for download. So freaking good.
This makes me soo darn happy. This is joy in a bottle. :D
David Rawlings Rules!!!!!
Secor's vocal fills on harp are outstanding.
the greatest part about this is Ketch doing the baritone (correct me please if that's incorrect). That deep voice is a riot haha
Bri Fitz He's singing bass, not baritone.
yep, he really held that spot.
Great harmonies!
This puts a huge grin on my face.
Splendid!
Wonderful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I freaking LOVE this!!
amazing!
Excellent...
Ketch has a ridiculous low harmony for guy with such a sweet voice when he is singing lead. Amazing stuff.

Class stuff.
This is great. Until this morning I'd only heard Jesse Fuller's version.
Hippies and hill billies are alot alike .I know this because I've lived in Kentucky and California.
Born and raised in southwest va....you are 100% right on that one 💚🙏💚
Hillbillies are conservative hippies lol
Can it be that this is as good as Jessie Fuller? WOW!
I just said the same thing on the other video. Makes you rethink the whole recording game.
that harmonica dude is awesome XD
Ketch is rockin the f* ck out of the harmonica here
the whole band with a shure SM57 (mono) and it sounds so good!?!
Love watching Ketch sing bass - always looks like he is about to pass out from lack of oxygen
@Snydercrew Rawlings also produced OCMS's first two CDs and co-wrote several songs on those CDs.
An old Jesse Fuller number from the "Lone Cat" album. Check out the original as well!
The Harmonica Player.
high five !!
I hope Jessie Fuller got the credit for writing this wonderful song.
The only other version I've heard was the Grateful Dead on "Dead Reckoning". Live acoustic from Radio City Music Hall.
@snosamie6 There are firefox addons that allow you to rip the audio. I think one is called " uTube2mp3"
Yup
My name is Dave Rawlings and I'm an engineer. True story
someone needs to buy Ketch a new wifebeater....hehehe. SICK video!
Haha. Reach for that BASS!
the grateful dead live.the dream moves on into the future .let's get high

If you get the chance to go see the DRM take my advice.....GO
@iamtalamox I think Dave's is a '35
So the monkey didn't crash the train?
No
Epiphone Olympic Archtop Guitar
Who's singing bass on the chorus?
Ketch looks like he didn't get much sleep before this one haha
You may be right.
could be the big Locomotive #99...guess we'll see...lol
@iamtalamox I feel ya, but I'm pretty sure the magic is in Dave's finger's, not the guitar....
He already promised to marry me. Sorry. RAWLINGS IS MINE
marry me Mr. Rawlings
I swear there's a hole in the back of that guitar lol.
hippies
Love the music but holy shit they all look rough and beat up.
;0)
🐒
the grateful dead virsion is better
Not quite as good as Jerry and the boys, but pretty sweet nonetheless.

you know, music is serious business and can't ever be fun.

Could you tell me what camera was used to record this? Thanks!
