A sturdy net is a perfect first thing to grab if a boat hook isn't handy. The last thing you want is someone grabbing a gaff or something sharp, while a net is pretty safe. Just keep the netting out of their face.
love your honesty and humility, john. most guys egos would have 'lost' the video of a fall overboard; you took advantage of a teaching moment. you're the best.
Hi John, so glad you didn’t get hurt falling off the boat. My husband Robert and I lived in EH NY. We had a 26 ft boat and fished every weekend, but had to move. We are in PA and don’t get to EH much, due to health issues . Miss fishing, and eating the fish, so good. I enjoy watching you and other on tv now.
Oh boy, my heart was racing when you fell in just after telling your brother to go, those live props are no laughing matter. You taught us all a little lesson on that trip.
Hey John I work on the water for a living offshore. We wear pfds working on deck at all times. Now I wear them when I fish too. The inflatable horse collars are not cumbersome, are cheap (about $200) and will save your life. Weird stuff happens on the water, seasoned guys drown all the time. Stay safe out there and thanks for content.
good point about the cell phone. almost lost mine overboard a few times. i've been better recently about backing up the phone to the laptop and then backing up the laptop to an external hard disk. nj just passed a law - all boats under 26' pfd must be worn from nov 1 to may 1. i usually only wear mine when anchoring up at night for giant new jersey rainbows and lake trout in my 16' aluminum. after seeing how easy it is to go over, will be wearing one more often. amazing how you got back in the boat so quickly. glad you're ok.
Entertaining and Informational. Thank God you didn't become chum with your brother almost starting the engine. Especially since I'm waiting patiently for that underwater drone footage once you head south 🙂
Glad you’re ok. Add to you list of takeaways “way too much clutter on the deck of the boat.” Go to boat outfitters and get some tackle solutions that can mount under gunwale or console. 👍
You can never assume that the other person in the boat will help you in an emergency, something could happen to both of you. Thank goodness you got back in quickly and without any injuries other than maybe your ego 😂.
Several years ago my bilge pump died and I took a huge wave over the transom in a rough inlet. I had no way to bail out the water. Now any boat I own has two high capacity pumps.
Glad you're ok - never saw anyone go overboard before but can understand how it could happen after a few times getting rope or line stuck in the prop. Thanks God you weren't out in big current like by Fishers Island. Get bilge pump running LoL
Glad you're ok and to see its not only me that takes unnecessary risks at times. Thanks for not only showing the good of fishing but the bad and ugly as well
When you said the boat plug was on the outside, I had unpleasant visions of you dropping the plug down to ol' Davy Jones. When I was a kid out fishing with my father, we did that self bailer once. Worked well. Always carried an extra or two boat plugs. The boat plug was checked a couple times during the prelaunch checklist. Just glad everything worked out
It shows how quickly something can go wrong quickly on the water, even with someone that has the experience you have. I dumped my kayak while fishing in our lake by just turning toward the back too far and the Kayak went over, There is a shock that takes place those few seconds in the water when you never expected to be there. Its eye opening.
Time to start talking to boat manufacturers and get a sponsorship. A nice new 23 to 25 center console and they get from all your videos a massive amount of publicity. And you are lucky for sure as you said when the tide is ripping out of the sound at 5 mph at peak you could have been in massive danger.
Glad your ok. Sorry about your phone. The problem with these aluminum riveted boats is, if you don't fix it right the first time the leak just get worse. Due to the flexibility of the aluminum.
Hey John, have done a bunch of dumb things on the boat you got me on that one have to fall out. Two cell phone in the Navasink river and sat on a plug and put the treble in the back of my thigh. Did my own surgery and cut the skin down to the hooks. Aways carry peroxide, and flooded it and had my nephew put on some baid aids and fished the rest of the day. Had my wife dress it when i got home. Had my sons friend swing a blue into my side and agan get trebles in me. This time had my son slice it out. The damm thing was going crazy while in me to I managed to get him unhooked. The screaming and cursing was pretty epic. Super clocked the back of my head on a slippery ramp launching, went out and fished with a headache. Other not as eventful things also. Yes the no pfd with a capable partner is some what ok but just proves it chancey. They say normally in an major aircarft crash usually. 3 things go wrong. For you leaky boat, fuse blown, and plug in from the outside. The other thing in your favor is water still kinda warm and air temp pretty warm. Yes if your had say jeans on they would have never dried, Ok john thankfully just some lessons learned and no injuries. stay safe...... walt
Omg john good thing your brother didn't have her in gear when you said go and that property spinning thank God your ok see how fast shit like that can happen 😳
I’m sorry John but I found myself laughing WAY too hard at that. Plunges are funny but there’s something about a slow-motion slide….😂 I do love that you used this as a teachable moment. Bummer about the phone but glad that was the only casualty.
Roughly what weight is the lead? That's based on current speed? And do you see fish on the sonar when you start the drift, or are you just fishing in a known channel?
Appreciate your honest display of what can go wrong, but still scratching my head as to why you replaced one old leaky riveted boat with another. I know, I know - it was kept on a lake in NH. Also, I bent over my bleed bucket last week and almost saw my TM remote go in from the lanyard on my PFD - made me wonder if they're water- tight, proof, resistant. How's yours?
I replaced a rotted tin boat with a deeper wider mostly clean boat with a few accessible leaky rivets. I could seal it up in a couple of hours. Just haven't got to it.
I think those micro remotes are waterproof. No damage done. As a backup, I put the IPilot app on my new phone, then paired and tested it to make sure I have backup control.
First of all …things can go wrong in a split second .. thankfully all ended well. In the area you were fishing , I have a good idea where it is , would my Bristol Skiff 17’ /40 hp be enough to handle those waters ? Have had her out in the lower Hudson River in some pretty rough chop. Have never ventured out into the sound yet. Just some sound advice from a more experienced boater. Thank you .
John, thank God you're OK so now I can say it.......that was fu$*in funny as hell, sorry but since you're OK I have to say it. The only thing that would have made it funnier if if the 4 Johns were with you and would have broken your nuts to no end. Seriously, you cant be too careful out there. That's a good example for why you should always have a PFD (as you typically do). Todays inflatables are barely noticeable and worth the price. Thank you for not editing that out as its important for novices and experienced boaters to see how even the most experienced people on the water aren't exempt from risk. As usual, you and your brother had a great trip otherwise. Outstanding video.
I have to admit, it scares me thinkin of the prop turnin during something like that. I know it was in neutral. But 😬. My son fell over once when trolling. I jumped in. Once I got to him, the rapidly approaching trolled spoons entered my mind, and I started to panic. Same kinda dred, I guess.
Hey John: Long time no see. You coming back to SWFL anytime soon? The snook and reds have been asking for you! BTW, I went in twice last month, a couple days apart. Had never happened in eight years previously. Once was picking up a five gallon wet/dry vac that must have been floating around since Ian! Thankfully, neither time did the yak flip, just me.
LOL your brother's first reaction was to reach for the net! Get in the BAG Skinner 😆
I thought that quick thinking on his part, and it definitely looked funny.
Real quick thinking. 👍👍👍
Kudos to him.
Maybe he thought you look like a giant sea robin. 😂
You’re brother was ready with the net to pull in the biggest catch of the day. 😅
I blame your brother John! He really didn't move too fast to help you. Great stuff as always!

Thanks for watching. I'm glad you enjoy the videos!
Oh boy, my heart was racing when you fell in just after telling your brother to go, those live props are no laughing matter. You taught us all a little lesson on that trip.
I’ve never seen anyone fall overboard and slow motion before. I’m glad you’re OK Skinner.
Nice job with the self rescue. Plenty of guys your age could not pull themselves up like that. Stay in good shape!
Hey John I work on the water for a living offshore. We wear pfds working on deck at all times. Now I wear them when I fish too. The inflatable horse collars are not cumbersome, are cheap (about $200) and will save your life. Weird stuff happens on the water, seasoned guys drown all the time. “Called it” from your brother is what makes it lol
Thx for sharing
Thank God you weren’t injured 🙏
Glad you’re ok! Time to fix those rivets and caulk the splash well after you replace the bilge pump! Plenty of time before you head south😎
Wow, glad you are ok. First thing I thought of was the prop.
glad youre safe
good point about the cell phone. almost lost mine overboard a few times. i've been better recently about backing up the phone to the laptop and then backing up the laptop to an external hard disk. nj just passed a law - all boats under 26' pfd must be worn from nov 1 to may 1. i usually only wear mine when anchoring up at night for giant new jersey rainbows and lake trout in my 16' aluminum. after seeing how easy it is to go over, will be wearing one more often. amazing how you got back in the boat so quickly. glad you're ok.

Damn John , you almost became chum bait.
Glad you’re alright. One hell of a trip
Great video John!! Glad you didn't get hurt . The fish gods were smiling down upon you that day!!
Glad you are okay! Your a great teacher, learned lots from you. Continue being safe you and your brother.
Old legends never die, they just catch more fish.
Thanks for the clarification on the drain plug to the inside. That's what I do and was wondering if there were any cons. Makes sense. Thanks John.
Fishing the edge literally 😂😂 nice video
Awesome comment.
Glad you are OK Mr. Skinner. Still fishing after all that, nothing stops a determined fisherman. 😂
#1 put on a PFD 😊 #2 Have two electric bilge pumps and one manual one. And then rig that plug from the inside. 😅
That looked like an AFV video ! 😂
Just goes to show how quickly things can go wrong on the water. Thank God this one ended well.
Glad you’re ok. Add to you list of takeaways “way too much clutter on the deck of the boat.” Go to boat outfitters and get some tackle solutions that can mount under gunwale or console. 👍
Wow, glad you are okay and man that boat is amazing you are able to climb back on with ease
thank you for sharing this video, great teaching moment!
Scary but glad your ok
😂 I can’t believe you pulled the plug! lol I Keep a small 6gpm sump pump on my boat with mini inverter works great in a pinch!
Or a manual bilge pump
Love it…brother says, ”You will thank me later.”
It almost happened to me alone and in the winter at night ! The next day I bought a pfd and wore it on the boat at all times, very scary!
You can never assume that the other person in the boat will help you in an emergency, something could happen to both of you.
Thank goodness you got back in quickly and without any injuries other than maybe your ego 😂.
love the content. thanks
Another hit from the Snaggy Bottom Boys
Glad you're ok. That red jellyfish, 10:46 I thought they were around during the summer?
Glad that turned out ok John. What an adventure.
Several years ago my bilge pump died and I took a huge wave over the transom in a rough inlet. I had no way to bail out the water. Now any boat I own has two high capacity pumps.
The fishing gods made sure your camera was adjusted for that moment of comedy
That's the most amazing part of the whole video for me. The boat waves adjusted it just in time.
Lucky Guy, at least you had most of it covered, it could have been much worse.
Glad your okay Mr. Skinner.
Glad you're ok - never saw anyone go overboard before but can understand how it could happen after a few times getting rope or line stuck in the prop. Thanks God you weren't out in big current like by Fishers Island. Get bilge pump running LoL
Damn! Glad your ok
Glad you're ok and to see its not only me that takes unnecessary risks at times. Thanks for not only showing the good of fishing but the bad and ugly as well
I show the bad, ugly, and stupid from two camera angles.
Just glad everything worked out
I had 3 spare plugs on the boat. Maybe 4 now.
Another great video. Glad you got thru it all ok. Keep up the good work
My brother will most likely come and get me! 😂 Ya think John
Your brother sure wanted you to fall in. He didn't move to fast to get you. Haha. Just kidding. Glad you're ok!! Love and learn.
down goes Skinner
Complacency can be a killer.
Good video
I’m surprised Ritchie waked you guys like that
Not his fault at all!! He did nothing wrong! If I can't take that (I can), I shouldn't be there.
Noticed your brother showed good sense on the way in by putting on a PFD. One out of two is a start.🤔
good times!
It shows how quickly something can go wrong quickly on the water, even with someone that
has the experience you have. I dumped my kayak while fishing in our lake by just turning toward the back too far and the Kayak went over, There is a shock that takes place those few seconds in the water when you never expected to be there. Its eye opening.
Amazing great upload
Get the gaff!
Seriously, glad all are ok
Holy crap hope all is well sir

I wouldn't take a boat that big if it was given to me.
Wow glad your ok. shit happens quick. That party boat looks like the Brooklyn Girl.
The realest of the real
When i was a kid in the 20s we would always go overboard on the way to America on our ships for fun. We surfed on crocidiles to. Americas soft today
@John Skinner did you learn that from the Pro Angler Bill Dance?😅
Glad your ok. Sorry about your phone. The problem with these aluminum riveted boats is, if you don't fix it right the first time the leak just get worse. Due to the flexibility of the aluminum.

Bro looks like he was going to try and net you up!
Have you used any flare hawk jigs for this type fishing? Seems like they would hold profile better.
Omg john good thing your brother didn't have her in gear when you said go and that property spinning thank God your ok see how fast shit like that can happen 😳
I’m sorry John but I found myself laughing WAY too hard at that. Plunges are funny but there’s something about a slow-motion slide….😂
I do love that you used this as a teachable moment. Bummer about the phone but glad that was the only casualty.
Laugh away! No problem. Such a great camera angle so I could show everyone.
Lol looks like a bill dance blooper!!!
Roughly what weight is the lead? That's based on current speed? And do you see fish on the sonar when you start the drift, or are you just fishing in a known channel?
John....great stuff as always. How do you determine current speed? Rookie question I guess but I don't know
It shows on the GPS.
John is there a minimum depth for 3way or just current speed
Appreciate your honest display of what can go wrong, but still scratching my head as to why you replaced one old leaky riveted boat with another. I know, I know - it was kept on a lake in NH. If I'm in the ocean. I'm wearing a PFD. Specially in a smaller boat. (That leaks) Fyi. It's the law now under 25'
Hahahahaha he gets the net as if he’s gonna net you into the boat
First of all …things can go wrong in a split second .. thankfully all ended well.
In the area you were fishing , I have a good idea where it is , would my Bristol Skiff 17’ /40 hp be enough to handle those waters ? Have had her out in the lower Hudson River in some pretty rough chop. Have never ventured out into the sound yet. Just some sound advice from a more experienced boater. Thank you .
I would not fish there with that because of trying to power out of the rip with a 17-ft boat and only a 40. I have a new 70.
Where can you get those sinkers ? I can only find up to 6 once’s, thanks.
We pour our own.
Dang! 2 of my favorite RUclipsrs took a swim a week apart! Glad you’re OK
Who was the other swimmer?
@@darenleeper1644 fishaholic
It looks like your drifting an out going tide, again, I know you prefer that, does that mean you wouldn’t bother on a flood tide ? Thanks
You have good upper body strength 💪🏼
How do you keep from tangling when dropping 80 ft?
The drift/current stands the jig out. It's never a problem.
Just like Mr. Limpit with Don Knots😅
Hi John this is why people have 2 Bilge Pumps so you don't end up in water 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
I just bought a second one and the wiring and switch is all set up.
Most likely he's gonna come get me... I hope so!
John, thank God you're OK so now I can say it.......that was fu$*in funny as hell, sorry but since you're OK I have to say it. I always show my screw-ups. And yes, feel free to laugh!
Ooh no man overboard.. Hate to see you go down. but glad everything went well.. what was the water temp?
65. Never felt it.
I THOUGHT YOU SAID “GO BO GO”
So, how did it go when you were replacing the plug?🤣🤣
Bad netting job. Didn't get skinner in the net lol 😂
I would be having a panic attack if I lost my cell phone in the water lol
you should've let him net you!!
Well your brother did it right head on first 🤣🤣🤣
John
thank GOD youre ok
that prop could have been spiining
second..thanks for showing us that one can never take safety for granted on the water!
Be careful

Mid-November. Looking forward to it!
And I bet the water is a bit chilly !!!
65. I was only in it for 7 seconds. I'm fast when needed.
Glad nothing serious. What do you do for an encore! Be safe.
What was the water temp?
65
