Love it just love new generations finding Lola! Dude…relisten to the song LOLA IS A MAN!!!. It was based on a true story. The Kinks manager was out clubbing and he spotted a beautiful “ woman “ they spent the evening together and it wasn’t until later he found out that “ Lola “ was a “ Guy “. Quite a few people catch it, but a lot don’t.

Such a great song -- not just becaue it's "shocking" but also 'cause it's written with real humor. And it has a terrific melody.
I here it was banned after only 49 seconds in one US state.

This song came out in 1970, which is probably why you never heard it before. The lyrics give hints as to what the singer is getting at, and the final lyric spells it out (I know I'm a man and so's Lola). It's based on their manager's experience - he met who he thought was a woman at a club, got drunk, went home with her, and found out she was a guy. The fact that they made a hit song out of it shows me they were very progressive-minded individuals. What shocks me, is how the "morality police" allowed it to air back then.
I don't think that the song is necessarily progressive as you are describing it here i.e. there is no political message here whatsoever, as with today's woke transgender ideology. You're taking today's world with all of its politics and ideologies and projecting it back on to this song, when the song here is not promoting any of that.
@@grosbeak6130 I think you missed my point. Of course it wasn't political in any way, but back then, no one talked about this stuff, whereas today it's in the forefront of societal interests. By progressive, I wasn't referring to politics but a type of thought process. Progressive thought just meant new ways of seeing things (back then, that is - nowadays it's mostly political for sure). The song had nothing to do with woke ideology, it was simply prophetic without realizing it. That's all I meant.
The BBC DID ban the song. Why? Because it mentioned the brand name "Coca Cola." They made The Kinks record a new BBC-friendly version with "Coca Cola" replaced by "Cherry Cola!"

You listen to the song with you didn’t listen to the lyrics, listen to it again, and again, hopefully you will get it. And then listen to Lou Reed, “Walk On The Wild Side”. and then Aerosmith, “Dude (Looks Like a Lady).

I' m glad I'm a man and so is Lola, was at the end. This came out when I was 10 and we didn't understand what it was about until we got older. It was very daring and risky to sing about a transsexual back in the 70s.
