@@garyarnett1220 The BBC (British Broadcasting Company) were listening, and threatened to ban it, on the grounds that the mention of the brand name 'Coca-Cola' would in effect be advertising if they played it. The point was, it wasn't real champagne, indicating it was a shady sort of joint they were in, typical of many Soho (London) clubs at the time. The hilarious part was that they completely missed the transgender/cross-dressing theme, which would DEFINITELY have been a no-no, had they realised! The story told in the song was based around a real life encounter between one of their managers (IIRC) and a certain lady in a Soho Club. It was extremely brave of Ray (the writer/singer) and the band to tackle this subject, which was pretty much taboo back then - along with homosexuality and pretty much anything that wasn't conventional in that department - and to do it with such grace, wit and compassion was truly admirable. More of a confession. Once you've lived long enough, you'll have at least ONCE where you stop for half a second and think about it. The one that made me think about it was more beautiful than 90% of women.
Great to see you again! Nobody talked openly about trans-sexuals back then. So Kink's frontman Ray Davies had to be subtle in revealing the story of Lola. he post below mine gives examples of some of the important lines, like the one you were trying to find: "I'm not dumb but I can't understand/ Why she walked like a woman but talked like a man."
No he did not meet her/him at the beach. Go research the lyrics and to save you some time,The Kinks manager tried to pick up a lady in a bar in Paris while apparently heavily inebriated. At Dawn he discovered that his dream woman had a five o’clock shadow.
Back in the day (when I was 18) some radio stations banned this song, some of my friends looked at me funny, ribbed me for playing it, but I didn't care, this is a song I never get tired of. The Hook is genius! Sticks in your mind.
Please, please remember this song hit the charts in 1970(!). That's right, 53 years ago. A little over a year before Reed's famous "Walk on the Wild Side". Was it controversial? You bet! With many stations refusing to play it. But it was, and still is, hugely popular for the clever story telling and lyrics, but also the superb tight music playing and outright fun the band is obviously having. Proto Punk. Still fresh and relevant half a century later. And there are dozens of other absolute gems by the Kinks from their deeeeep catalog. Check some more out...a lot more.

Right from the start the song gives examples of fakes, all big clues - champagne that tastes like Coca Cola (because the clubs charged for champagne but supplied something else), then later it said electric candle light, plus lots of stuff that other people mention
The bands manager apparently pulled a transvestite by accident one night and when the band found out and wrote this song - albeit very sympathetically to the ‘lady’ in question
Though it's not explicitly stated it seems like Lola is most likely a Transwoman. It's pretty much a trans-positive song and done very well for when it was written and produced. He wrote it about an experience his manager had in picking up a woman in a bar, talking her home and learning later they were trans.
You caught the clues but missed the meaning (ESPECIALLY the last line, "I know what I am and I'm glad I'm a man and so is Lola"). Lola is a transvestite.
No. Nothing like Ronnie James Dio. The Kinks are their own special type of rock. You didn't listen very good, even though you said you were listening so hard. Completely missed the message. Just listen again and you'll get it.
