Hi Scott have to say I really like your video, you speak in right speed and tone which make it really nice to listen to, also with nice bgm make the video so enjoyful. I'm about to get my first action cam for my first diving trip since covid, your video help me alot while i'm in difficulty to choose dji or gopro. btw 5:00 the chest part is a highlight to me😍
The footage straight from this camera looks really impressive. I'm about to upgrade my action camera, and I've been researching the Action 4, Gopro12 and the Insta360 Ace Pro, but from what I've seen online, for scuba purposes, the Action 4 takes it for me.
I used to dive when I was on active duty so long ago. Okinawa, Hawaii, Guam...This video makes me want to get back in the water. I need a refresher course though. It's been a few years!
You've hit the nail on the head with this test! For us divers, the automatic color filter is extremely important as it (almost) perfectly adjusts the white balance. I think this is a big advantage over GoPro cameras.
Wow !! I love the content of sea life. I also appreciate your review of the CJI camera. The auto features are great for us non professional photographers.
Your videos are simply amazing! I recently switched from GoPro to DJI because I was having connection issues and editing issues and I was just getting frustrated so that’s when I made the switch. If I may ask, what editing software are you using? I love the music in both your GoPro underwater review and this DJI video. Keep up the good work and stay safe on those dives!
Thank you very much! I edit with premier pro and I know a lot of people edit with davinchi resolve as well…im sure they are both great…..good luck on your videos!!!
Thank you for this review. Looks like a red filter is still needed in greater depths... That's a bummer. For better color correction in post I would use D-Log M instead of Standard Color. The 10bit color should produce some better results in the highlights and give you more freedom in color correction.
You are very welcome! In deeper depths the red filter would give it a more mono chromatic look, the better way to go would be to add lighting to your rig and light up the foreground…I plan on making a video about log in the near future however this review is intended to be for the everyday user who won’t be doing much work in post
Thanks for video. I have just changed to OA1 to OA4 so I am curious to see if there will be visible difference between the two. I dive only to 18M (OWD) so I am thinking if I will need the housing, probably yes, just in case... And I will probably shoot in 60fps, rock steady plus. I was wandering if the digital stabilization under the water is same effective as in above water footage.
Hopefully getting this camera for my birthday! Can't wait to be able to shoot some stuff with it. Also I love this review, completely unbiased, exactly what you clicked for. Nice work!
hello my friend i want to ask you about the size of it does it fit to a pocket jeans or do it pop up in a weird way if you could assure me with a 1-minute video about this i would be appreciative
Hey I just come home from a shooting with the DJI action 4 under water. In some shots with artificial lighting I see this very slight horisontal bands, very disturbing. I shoot I max quality 10 bit etc. Have you experienced something similar, a true headscratcher
Did you have color set to normal on the camera for all the diving? Thanks for the video. I've been looking for a video that shower settings and setups for diving with the Osmo Action, and this is by far the best example. I can't figure if I should put it in 10-bit, cause I don't know how much I wanna colorgrade it afterwards, so is it worth it? And is there a difference in above water and underwater for that sake?
Thanks Sebastian! I did have it set to normal, I think it’s best to keep it in 10 bit if you can spare the strorage space, you may want to shift the color correction a little bit here and there and 10 bit really helps, keep in mind it will also keep you from loosing quality when you shoot at a higher frame rate for slow motion as well…but if you don’t want to store 10bit footage i totally get it
I have only just now read this about the osmo action 4 when scuba diving."When diving below 16 meters with the Osmo Action 4 and the Scuba Diving mode activates due to pressure, the usual shutter/record button is disabled. In this case, you'll use the Quick Switch (QS) button to start and stop recording. The QS button is designed to work under high-pressure conditions, allowing you to control recording without relying on the shutter/record button. So, even deep underwater, the QS button becomes your main control for starting and stopping video recording".So this button becomes a universal button to power on, select video or photo, then take a picture or start shooting a video. I checked the DJI manual and it doesnt clearly say how this is achieved. I checked with dji support and they said you need to decide wether you will be taking photos or videos past 16 meters before the pressure cutoff kicks in.Then you can only use the camera as a start and stop. You cant play back videos on a dive or scroll to other presets to bracket different fstops and iso settings etc.
This is very interesting…I use the dive housing which will prevent the pressure from activating this feature you are referring too…this way I can switch between different modes while underwater, look for the section in my video where I cover how to switch between different shooting profiles by using the side button and the shutter button to do so with out needing to access the touch screen….also keep in mind your camera will last a lot longer if you use the housing as opposed to diving without it especially if you are primarily in saltwater, I just think it’s always better to protect it…the only downside is the loss of audio quality : /
Very fair question because I have had a lot of issues with earlier GoPros lol….i was surprised to have zero issues with either the hero 12 or the DJI action 4 and I have used them both a lot now

Thank you so much! That was an oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico and the option to connect the GoPro to your mask can be done with specific dive masks…they can be found on Amazon. All of my footage in this video was hand held however…

I just received the action 4 amd telesin underwater case yesterday, but i am bit scared to try it out. Feels like there is a little gap between back and front of the housing... Pressure will probably keep it together... But it just doesn't feel right compared to other housings. Did you notice the same thing ?

Sorry to hear that, this video is the DJI action 4 not the 3, I have heard really bad things about the action 3 however….i would say maybe you got a defective one? I’m not really sure, best of luck to you!
Do you use the lens hood? Trying to figure out the use case for that. Bought A4 + waterproof package for use during diving like yourself but I'm not sure if or why I would want to use it.
@@scottbauerbelow I wish there was a way for me to post a photo. It’s almost practically identical to the glass lens on the camera except there’s no glass on it at all. But it sounds more that’s it’s for dispelling glare/flare as you noted.
Wow thx very much for this video ! I have the Action 4 and will buy the 5. For me, i still detected a defect on the 4 which I hope will be corrected on the 5; when I'm in the sea, snorkeling, the quality is impressive but... From time to time, the color turns green, before recovering within 10 to 20 seconds... Which never happens on gopro. As a result, I have to modify the colors of these "moments" on my editing software. On the internet, they say it's because of the front sensor which constantly adapts, and which the gopro doesn't have. We have great quality underwater, better than GoPro, but from time to time, it sucks as explained... Too bad.
I completely agree! I really enjoyed the action 5 but it too can be a bit shifty with color as seen in my last video but it has certainly improved from the 4
Thanks man! Unfortunately there is no custom WB feature for this action camera but maybe they can add that through firmware one day….The WB can be manually set from 2000k to 10000k and doing so underwater may need to involve setting up custom presets
@@scottbauerbelow well yes and no :) if you will put grey card in front of camera so it will cover bigger part of what camera see and then switch to manual mode in WB settings you will get pretty close measure. Then usually is good enough to record few seconds with grey car to get even better results during postrprduction . I still didn’t figure out if that is possible underwater like you need to be able operate back touch screen ?
I think the best thing to do as opposed to buying the combos are just to order a housing and a some extra batteries, those are things that you will get a lot of use out of!
Great video Scott, much appreciated. After much resistance (they feel like toys), bought my first Action camera, the DJI Action4. Love the video quality but given up trying still photography with it. Shooting in Vanuatu :-)
Gopro 12 has a mode where you shoot in Full mode and then you can easily switch that same footage to vertical after in its editing software. Does Action 4 have this same function? Thanks
Nice review !I still hesitate.... The go pro 12 is almost 100 euros cheaper, with current promotions. I live in Guadeloupe and do a lot of freediving. I will use the camera mainly underwater and I feel like Action 4 is better in these conditions?
Thank you! I really like the action 4 but to be completely honest I choose to keep the hero 12 instead…I think that the DJI footage has more of a tendency to be washed out, blown out, or over exposed
Just fishing around YT catalog & saw this video. Personally, as have had No Major issues w/DJI OA-1 & 3, think going to hold off from purchasing OA-3. Have been user/fan boy of OA line since 2020-21 when I got into action cams. EVERYONE that I knew was telling me to "Go w/Go Pro!" But it was never in my DNA to "Go Along w/the Crowd" just because Everyone else is doing the Same. Am Very Happy I "Stuck 2 My Guns!"-lol...BTW...Very Nice footage!
Thank you! And yeah I agree the new DJI action 4 is pretty cool, I have one as well and Im pretty impressed with it…I can’t decide which one I like more at the moment
Ive tried the osmo 4 in the redsea, it performed well, Id say better colours than gopro in standard shallow shots, I used log in deeper dives. I prefer the Osmo to the gopro. A major issue tho. The goPro has so much third party extras, ie Inon and AOI lenes. I'm modifying a AOI lens to fit the Osmo, but this is big limitation, until 3rd party manufacturers support the Osmo.
Hello, for the underwater videos is the camera inside the dive case? And is there a difference in video quality when the camera is in the dive case vs if it is not for underwater recording?
Hi Scott, how do you prevent fogging in the dive case? We live in a humid part of the world, and the anti-fog inserts dont work for long. After about 10 minutes of filming, the dive case fogs up on the lens part. We have also tried blowing dry air with a hair dryer(cold air) before placing it in the case, and with the anti fog inserts, but it still fogs up. Hope you have some solutions.😅
That is rough! I have had that issue before as well….i would suggest to shoot in 2.7k instead of 4k as the camera will run cooler and be less likely to fog, unfortunately humidity is just unavoidable….best of luck!
Are you sure you placed the camera dry inside the case? Try to put the camera inside the case in (for example) an dry air cooled (hotel)room. Don’t open the case when outside in the warm humid air. I once cleaned my lense before diving with water..this already caused m my case to fog up. Keep it dry and try avoid opening the case!
I may have to convert and buy a new toy! Did you use on night dive? If so how did it do? Maybe a video showing side by side video with GP12 for comparison.
I did not use it on the night dive but I’m glad you said that because I’m planning on doing a side by side video with the hero 12 and I do know that the DJI is known to perform better in low light than the GoPro
This dive site must be incredible at night. All those tube coral. Also, glad about that other magenta comment. I was wondering how your Perigrine had pink numbers 😂
I like using any of the 3rd party housings from Amazon as opposed to the original GoPro one which is over priced in my opinion…the one I use specifically is telesin
I'm wondering.. how reliable is the magnetic mounting system ? If you put it on something shaking hard like a car on a track full of obstacles or on your helmet while bicycling down mountains, this kind of stuffs, how resistant is the magnetic mounting system ? Can the camera fall off ? Thank you :)
It is very reliable from what I have experienced….it clips in as well as attached magnetically…you have to press on both sides at once to make it let go
@@scottbauerbelow Thank you very much for your answer ! 🙏 It was my only worry about this camera so I think I'll be going for this one (was hesitating between this one and the Gopro 12 but after watching hours of comparison videos, I finally made my decision) :)
I find that the underwater housing is good to protect it but you will get much better audio without it….if you use it in saltwater with out the underwater housing be sore to soak it in freshwater for a long time afterwards
Did you limit the shutter speed or iso in anyway? Also which sharpness/noise reduction level did you use? It looks like -2/-2. The underwater video part looks amazing.
Thanks for this test first of all, I really struggled to find some decent videos of the Action 4 underwater. In the last images, the water had a magenta-tinged color. What depth were you at? I would be curious to see the same images with full post production (from a flat profile) to understand what you can really achieve with this camera. The same for the GoPro. For best results, both need full post underwater
I think that was around 60 feet but it was more due to the auto WB…the auto WB seems to shift from green to magenta pretty inconsistently regardless of the depth unfortunately…of course the deeper you go, the more warm colors you will loose when shooting natural light also
Of course! I totally understand that you will get a better result when shooting in flat…this video is to test out the cameras ability to do an auto white balance underwater with its built in sensor…it’s really for the average consumer who won’t be doing work in post….also I think it is best to invest in a bigger camera if you will be doing that sort of correction in post, you really can’t push these files too hard even when shot in flat but maybe that can be a good topic for another video….thanks for watching!
You can but you are just going to want to soak it in fresh water for a few hours afterwards to make sure that you get the sea water out of the microphone ports
Yes that is partially correct, it’s not so bad around the corners out of the water but when comparing it to the GoPro hero 12 it’s not as bad on the GoPro….a dome port would certainly help with this on either camera
I am not a fan of shooting through red filters to be honest, I feel like once you get past a certain depth they really just make the image look monochromatic….i would advise getting good lighting instead
Thank you! I personally don’t think red filters are that useful…they can work but they make the surface of the water look bad when you point the camera upwards and they also block a lot of light, I would try investing in lights instead…if you do want red filters there are a few options on Amazon that come with an underwater housing as well..
Here's my opinion on the video for me it's on the dark side it would have been interesting to see the footage if you had a light rig... I've done oil tankers in Florida so I thought image quality was exceptional it was just a little too dark ... I bought this camera for stabilization.. !!! And we'll see if it gets it right underwater because GoPro suffer from this weird yellowy greeny crap . The older GoPros had a real huge problem filming underwater it was a weird thing it would do... Im waiting for it to arrive Ups ...But so far this camera iReviews are amazing and it seems to really really have it together when it comes to image quality I'm just so blown away by the image quality compared to a high-quality mirrorless camera like maybe black Pocket magic camera or a Sony A7 2rs or whatever the newest Canon is...
Yeah, totally get it! All of these tests were shot with natural light. You may really like the results when you add light just be sure to get the biggest and brightest lights that you can afford. If you get weak lights it will mess with the WB and the image will suffer. I may need to make a video about this…
The DJI action 4 is supposedly rated to a depth of 18 meters which is about 59 feet without use of the underwater housing…the underwater housing will allow you to go much deeper….even if you are not going below 60ish feet, I would suggest to use the housing anyway to protect it from the salt water which is very corrosive…
Nice Scott! Awesome dive spot! Thanks for the review. I’m no photographer so it would probably do for me. I don’t have any type of action camera as of yet. It all comes down to cost for me. After you pointed out the different things to look for they stood out. The only other thing about noticed is when you were testing the mic, when you went outside, it seemed to be a bit grainy. The stabilization feature worked amazingly though! Overall, good review! Keep em comin!
With the use of a dome port I would totally agree! I think the problem that I am seeing here is the refraction caused by the flat lens that we are shooting through underwater….thanks for watching!
The thing is... believe or not, I've had a Chinese made cheep camera SJCAM (The original) about £35 in UK 8 years ago. Package with all accessories. Video images are exactly the same. I am using it only for my scuba & free dives. Everyone is keep asking me if was GoPro or any other expensive camera. The only thing missing was lack of stabilisation. Don't get me wrong. Action 4 is great camera and more advanced.

I completely agree! I really enjoyed the action 5 but it too can be a bit shifty with color as seen in my last video but it has certainly improved from the 4
Great video !! Do you have any tips how to set custom WB underwater on DJI ?
Standard or Adventure combo for day to day use recommendation?
I think the best thing to do as opposed to buying the combos are just to order a housing and a some extra batteries, those are things that you will get a lot of use out of!
Are these videos just straight from memory card and no post editing?
I am searching for best action cam for my freediving.
Hi! Yes this test footage is straight out of camera with no post processing or color grading…good luck on your free diving : )
Does this auto WB feature exist on the Osmo Action 3 as well?
Curious how you went with the Action 4, I assume you sent it back as there are no further videos for it ?
I still have the action 4, but I prefer using the GoPro hero 12…I like it better to be honest
@@scottbauerbelow why do you like the gopro better? Especially for diving
Great video Scott, much appreciated. After much resistance (they feel like toys), bought my first Action camera, the DJI Action4.
Love the video quality but given up trying still photography with it. Shooting in Vanuatu :-)
Thank you very much and good luck with the new action camera! They are not so good for stills but great for video
Gopro 12 has a mode where you shoot in Full mode and then you can easily switch that same footage to vertical after in its editing software. Does Action 4 have this same function? Thanks
Yes it does have an aspect ratio that works similar in that way
Hi sir. Thanks for the review. Can i ask sir what editing software you have? Thanks.
Thank you! I use adobe premiere
@@scottbauerbelow thanks sir
Nice review !I still hesitate.... The go pro 12 is almost 100 euros cheaper, with current promotions.
I live in Guadeloupe and do a lot of freediving.
I will use the camera mainly underwater and I feel like Action 4 is better in these conditions?
Thank you! I really like the action 4 but to be completely honest I choose to keep the hero 12 instead…I think that the DJI footage has more of a tendency to be washed out, blown out, or over exposed
Great review❤ i just wanted to ask where and which on mask housing did you take?
Thank you, you can find a lot of masks on Amazon that have the GoPro mount! I use a mask from hollis that has an attachable mount…
What is the difference of OSMO action3 underwater compared to action 4
That’s a great question, I haven’t tried out the action 3 but I have heard it wasn’t the best
I agree, 3rd party accessories is the main thing I that is lacking but I feel like that is starting to change
Hello, for the underwater videos is the camera inside the dive case?
And is there a difference in video quality when the camera is in the dive case vs if it is not for underwater recording?
Hi! The camera is inside of the dive case in this video and it will have a negligible impact on the video quality…
have you tried to shoot macros? how is the quality?
show we use extra lenses?
I know that there are macro lenses that are for GoPro…I would imagine there is a similar product for this camera as well
what scuba mask do you have that allows you to attach the camera?
I use one that comes from hollis and it has a removable GoPro mount that clips to the top…you can find much more inexpensive ones on Amazon too
@@scottbauerbelow does the Action 4 have such mount for a diving mask?
Did you test it with or without the extra dive case? I wont go deeper than 18 meters but im not sure if the camera is really waterproof.
It's waterproof just don't go too depth from the required without diving case, it works just fine I already tested it on DJI action 3
You can place little pieces of foam that come with the diving case… this prevents the fogging
What case do you use for the DJI Osmo Action 4 camera?
I’m new to this!
I’m wondering if it need a water housing when diving or snorkeling?
I find that the underwater housing is good to protect it but you will get much better audio without it….if you use it in saltwater with out the underwater housing be sore to soak it in freshwater for a long time afterwards
Hello can i ask for good waterproof case for dji action 4
Did you limit the shutter speed or iso in anyway? Also which sharpness/noise reduction level did you use? It looks like -2/-2. The underwater video part looks amazing.
I believe the ev compensation was left alone on this one…with the GoPros I go with -.5 however
Really helpful and am very impressed with the Action 4 in comparison to the GoPro Hero 11 and 12 footage I've seen elsewhere.
Thank you!
If u bring to under water u using a case???
Thanks for this test first of all, I really struggled to find some decent videos of the Action 4 underwater.
In the last images, the water had a magenta-tinged color. What depth were you at?
I would be curious to see the same images with full post production (from a flat profile) to understand what you can really achieve with this camera. The same for the GoPro. For best results, both need full post underwater
I think that was around 60 feet but it was more due to the auto WB…the auto WB seems to shift from green to magenta pretty inconsistently regardless of the depth unfortunately…of course the deeper you go, the more warm colors you will loose when shooting natural light also
Of course! I totally understand that you will get a better result when shooting in flat…this video is to test out the cameras ability to do an auto white balance underwater with its built in sensor…it’s really for the average consumer who won’t be doing work in post….also I think it is best to invest in a bigger camera if you will be doing that sort of correction in post, you really can’t push these files too hard even when shot in flat but maybe that can be a good topic for another video….thanks for watching!
this camera is no need the mic?
No I don’t believe so
Thank you so much for the video, very informative and helpful! Please, could you share where is the music from?😊😌 have a great day!
Can we shoot in sea 🌊 water i mean salt water without waterproof case??? Please do let me know!
You can but you are just going to want to soak it in fresh water for a few hours afterwards to make sure that you get the sea water out of the microphone ports
@@scottbauerbelow ok boss 🙌👍
The image distortion in the corners... You sure they're not from the underwater case?
Yes that is partially correct, it’s not so bad around the corners out of the water but when comparing it to the GoPro hero 12 it’s not as bad on the GoPro….a dome port would certainly help with this on either camera
I got water in my speaker is it broken or what
My internal mic is crackling…I may have the same type of issue. This is why I always recommend using the underwater housing
Have you tried any of the red filters for this camera underwater?
I am not a fan of shooting through red filters to be honest, I feel like once you get past a certain depth they really just make the image look monochromatic….i would advise getting good lighting instead
Hi Scott, great video! Can you suggest a red filter for the camera? Or do you think it would be useful?
Thank you! I personally don’t think red filters are that useful…they can work but they make the surface of the water look bad when you point the camera upwards and they also block a lot of light, I would try investing in lights instead…if you do want red filters there are a few options on Amazon that come with an underwater housing as well..
@@scottbauerbelow thanks for your feedback. Can you recommend any specific light and rig for the osmo4?
Hello, What Settings did you use?
Please do the same again with the new DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro, many will appreciate that, thanks.
Funny that you mention that, I’m working on it now lol
Nice review! Greetings from Italy.
Thank you!
I may need to make a video about this…
do you need case or not? i dont understand
@@scottbauerbelow yes I want to use it on sea, but only around the beach not dive deep
I completely agree I noticed that too…thanks and good luck!
nice love dji stuff
It’s a great camera…big step up from the action 3 in my opinion
@@scottbauerbelow action 3 got 4k120fps with firmware now.The rest is pretty similar i think.. lets say the difference is too small to update imo
How you doing?!Like it-you shared splendid dji. 🙃
Thank you!
Great video! Thanks for pointing out that thing about battery hatch!
Thank you! Don’t forget to use the cage!!! Lol
Thanks you so much for your video.
You are very welcome!
I think you can go to Ultra-Wide view underwater. Underwater the wrapping should be eliminated
That’s interesting! Maybe I should make a video for this. What is the exact model?
Amazing how it's become a busting reef!
Oh yeah! Oil rigs are great dives!
👍👍
4:11 that is not a mic ;) it has two up front and one at the bottom. Anyway great video! :)
You are right, I realized after I posted this video that those holes are the built in speaker…the details lol
Great video!
But! Mic is not there! It's its speaker. Read the manual ;)
Thanks! And you are right, I unfortunately didn’t realize that until after I posted the video lol
Great review🐳🐳🐳🐳🐳🐋🐋🐋🐋🐬🐬🐬🐬🐟🐟🐟🐟 thank you i am go with action 4
Thank you! Glad to hear it was helpful : )
There’s a jen ne se quois about GoPro. It’s an inferior camera in a lot of ways. But something about its footage is better.
I couldnt agree more, I still have both and I always choose the GoPro
I have 2 hero 7's, a Bravo 7LE, and am waiting for the action 4.......
By the looks of it, my other cameras are going to be collecting dust😂
@ 6:40
This music is killing me.
Lol
I like the music. Nice video!
DJI all the way, GP is overpriced and they all overheat
Very nice video thank you
