Great job guys, enjoyed watching. Unbelievable you all broke that record, lots of credit goes to you and maybe even EA for having a charging network that has improved enough to allow you to break the record. Porsche puts the other EV makers to shame on charging speed. Why have the other makers not learned from this? They should be forced to watch this epic video. Well done Kyle and team.
It's also a push for less expensive battery chemistry with less cobalt. Porsche still does NMC better than most. But still, I'm not a battery engineer, but I imagine there are downsides to LFP in some ways. That said it's not like the model 3 ended up doing much worse than the taycan in the surge. The other manufacturers can do better, but batteries aren't easy to redesign and spin up at a moment
Depends on what other manufacturers you're calling out. Tesla? Because they're still selling with their 400V architecture. Chinese models are already nearing 500kW peak charging curves. Reminder that Porsche had to recall every single Taycan sold, due to issues with the high voltage battery, because a short circuit might lead to fire. I'd rather not drive a car that Porsche doesn't properly test before putting it out on the road.
Not being snarky, because I absolutely love the Taycan both as a car and an EV benchmark, but is Porsche coming anywhere close to turning a profit on this thing on a per unit basis, even without taking R&D into account? Because that does kinda matter. Both Rivian and Lucid make cars that are in many ways better than Teslas, but unless I'm mistaken, they lose money on every one they make right? Correct me if that has changed. If it's the same with the Taycan, then great charging or no it's still just a tech demonstrator whose platform and advances won't be adopted by other carmakers until being more affordable.
Just as the speedometer was blurred out, the team was vague about time of day and in some cases about locations - probably to avoid incurring any issues about “extra legal” speeds.

I know the latest Tesla model 3 would lose judging from the I-90 surge, but since as they said this trip had plenty of (relatively) sub-optimal charging sessions due to outside factors, I do wonder how close to 40 hours that car would get considering how much it beat the model S by in the surge. Maybe even barely crack it at say 39 hours 59 minutes? Anyway, no doubt they will do another NY to LA run with a Tesla when those V4 superchargers start getting rolled out and either the S, 3 or upcoming refreshed Y become compatible with them. Will be great fun to see how that system will stack up compared to the Taycan.
@@addickland5656the v4 superchargers won't make a 3, Y, S or X charge faster. They are limited by the car, not the station. But it will charge the cybertruck faster.
@@markrichards9792 Is that confirmed by Tesla even for upcoming refreshed models? For sure I don't expect the current line-up to charge faster at a V4, but if Tesla can get 500 kw through a cable out of a V4 cabinet into a cybertruck then I would be highly surprised if they didn't update the charging ability of the S, X, 3, and Y next time any one of those gets a refresh, to something like 300 or even 400 kw, depending on what Tesla decides the new car version can handle. I was always under the impression that even if the current cars could take more juice (which yes, you're right, they can't), that the current V3 superchargers max out not much above 250 kw anyway. Honestly even beyond the Taycan just being an amazing (if yes, still expensive) car in it's own right, EV or ICE, and giving us all a preview of what EV charging curves and speeds hopefully will look like in a few short years among a whole bunch more affordable cars, can we also all agree how nice it is for the Tesla supercharging network to FINALLY have some actual competiion? That system was so far ahead of anyone else that you'd be fool to buy any other car if you wanted to do a lot of roadtrips with it. Now, at long, long last, Tesla has an incentive to improve their network again. Let's just say I don't think the recent V4 announcement is entirely accidental....
I mean if every charger across the Us was V3 and the supercharger network wasn't opening up to other car manufacturers Tesla probably would be fine, even with V3 ....the V4 announcement is probably mainly because other manufacturers are pressuring Tesla into it with for example Hyundai launching Nacs soon.... Hyundai couldn't do that with V3 Superchargers, so in theory Tesla needs to Build out V4 Superchargers pretty quickly!!

The information is based on people getting paid to get the best results. In the real world if you want to be comfortable while traveling you should know none of this information will be accurate
As noted, the Model 3 is already in a comparable range for road trip performance, and is well below the average price of new cars. And the huge new development is that the same is now also true of the Hyundai Ioniq 6. So the competition is heating up - at long last. As for cars that normal people can afford? Well, there are much larger forces at play in that regard. The American middle class has been shrinking since the Reagan era, and the rate of this shrinking is about to accelerate like a Plaid. So if you're a normal person, good luck affording anything in 2030.
I recently went back to the video you did on the gravity charging hub and was wondering where the other videos where with the new taycan in NYC. Looking forward to watching!
Kyle rags on getting only 180kW on the full EA station. Yet I don’t hear him mention that Tesla over commits chargers much worse. 360kW cabinets run 4 chargers, so 90kW for Tesla. Their new V4 cabinets support ~1Mw for 8 chargers do 120kW when full.
2:02:08 - charging at Glenwood Springs (even if you already topped up in Edwards), skipping Grand Junction and going on to Green River, UT is 100% the strategy. Here's why... Edwards 100 miles on from the Denver chargers (Arvada or Lakewood) 0.5 miles / 2 minutes from the Interstate exit (SO GOOD, THE PERFECT STOP) Glenwood Springs 88 miles to Grand Junction, 186 miles to Green River 1.5 miles / 4 minutes from the Interstate exit (BETTER THAN WHAT'S AHEAD) Grand Junction - AVOID Exit 31 off I-70 then through major urban streets 3.6 miles / 9 minutes from the Interstate exit (SLOWER, MORE COMPETITION FOR CHARGERS) Green River Business US-91 (Main Street) parallels I-70 as a straight shot 3.1 miles / 5 minutes from the Interstate exit (FASTER, LESS COMPETITION FOR CHARGERS)
This really underscores how the next stage of EVs will be when there are good chargers at every exit, and the route planners are good enough to get max performance for that individual car with the infrastructure.
First of all, great video. That said, I know it's extra work, but I wish this video would have included the route and the stops you decided to use. Similar to what the Ioniq Guy did on his I90 Surge standalone video. For example, which route did you take out of NYC? I-78 to I-80? And where was the switch -- 24>287>80? Then 80 to I-90 someplace where? And this race should really start by the GW Bridge. That way you can get I-80 straight and no midtown traffic. Just start from the bus terminal on the Manhattan side at 178th Street.
Makes sense for EA and other CPOs to whack in as many chargers as possible with some balancing and max out the grid connection, then try and get more power to the site or use a buffer battery to deal with the balancing issues at sites that need them. More plugs with balancing is better than a couple of plugs with speeds that most wont hit anytime soon.
Congrats! The Taycan deserves this honor for sure. It may be a new battery tech before we see a significant challenge/beat to that time. It looked like it was mostly stuff outside your control that held you up. EA is still a bit nerve racking and a bit dodgy, but it appears to be better than it was. Just not a great feeling not knowing what is going on with those chargers. It looks like you dodged most of the big bullets and scored a good time still even with the obstacles. One day we will get the charging infrastructure we are looking for. Sadly that shared architecture at the chargers sounds like what Tesla is going to be doing with V4. That is not a good move as these sites get packed. I think Walter at the Network Architect Channel was just saying the new Ionna sites they are actually overbuilding those cabinets so it does not appear there will be sharing there with those Alpitronics. Who holds the Canonball record for a EV truck? LOL
When it takes the initial dip into the lower 290's, why not turn on heater? I receive little data when charging our Mach E but I will get an additional 7kWh of energy to do so. Just learned this a few days ago. Plus you guys are always leaving the doors open to the colder air so it would seem from what video we are shown. Makes me wonder if it would also assist to prevent the thermal derating?
That North Platte to Fort Morgan stretch is unfortunate! I’m looking forward to the NEVI funds flowing to upgrade the Brush Supercharger and make a new Sterling Supercharger.

You guys are just amazing 🎉❤
Porsche has just learned it has a new car for there collection😊
Kyle rags on getting only 180kW on the full EA station. Yet I don’t hear him mention that Tesla over commits chargers much worse. 360kW cabinets run 4 chargers, so 90kW for Tesla. Their new V4 cabinets support ~1Mw for 8 chargers do 120kW when full.
AGC,always goofy charging ❤😂
I was just watching the last Taycan cannon ball, this is what I wanted to see next
2:02:08 - charging at Glenwood Springs (even if you already topped up in Edwards), skipping Grand Junction and going on to Green River, UT is 100% the strategy. Here's why...
Edwards
100 miles on from the Denver chargers (Arvada or Lakewood)
0.5 miles / 2 minutes from the Interstate exit (SO GOOD, THE PERFECT STOP)
Glenwood Springs
88 miles to Grand Junction, 186 miles to Green River
1.5 miles / 4 minutes from the Interstate exit (BETTER THAN WHAT'S AHEAD)
Grand Junction - AVOID
Exit 31 off I-70 then through major urban streets
3.6 miles / 9 minutes from the Interstate exit (SLOWER, MORE COMPETITION FOR CHARGERS)
Green River
Business US-91 (Main Street) parallels I-70 as a straight shot
3.1 miles / 5 minutes from the Interstate exit (FASTER, LESS COMPETITION FOR CHARGERS)
Denver roads are absolutely the worst in the country. Some say children fall into the potholes and are never seen again!
It's absolutely amazing, the moment you cross the state border the roads just suck. I thank governor Polis and the dems for misspending our road money
Damn. The Taycan makes my Ioniq 5 feels like a Bolt charging :-)
This really underscores how the next stage of EVs will be when there are good chargers at every exit, and the route planners are good enough to get max performance for that individual car with the infrastructure.
Be nice when Tesla brings THEYRE “A” game an quit mf SANDBAGGING
First of all, great video. That said, I know it's extra work, but I wish this video would have included the route and the stops you decided to use. Similar to what the Ioniq Guy did on his I90 Surge standalone video.
For example, which route did you take out of NYC? I-78 to I-80? And where was the switch -- 24>287>80? Then 80 to I-90 someplace where?
And this race should really start by the GW Bridge. That way you can get I-80 straight and no midtown traffic. Just start from the bus terminal on the Manhattan side at 178th Street.
1:05:50 That look on Tijmen's face says it all
Makes sense for EA and other CPOs to whack in as many chargers as possible with some balancing and max out the grid connection, then try and get more power to the site or use a buffer battery to deal with the balancing issues at sites that need them. More plugs with balancing is better than a couple of plugs with speeds that most wont hit anytime soon.
I Love Porsche 👍
“That dominoe too will fall “
I get that you guys cover up the speedomoter for legal reasons but I am so interested in what speeds you were cruising at
You can't spoil it being under 40 hours in the description 😭
Did you drive with auto-recuperation? How did you power the GoPro and radar detector? Enjoyed the video. I own a 2024 Taycan 4S and love it.
No way, lets goo 🙌
LOL
I like that @agingwheels is making random cameos in more videos.
1:44:34 The charge port does not close by itself when you are driving? Why?
Awesome video once again Kyle and YES I LOVE MY CITY MY HOMETOWN of NYC :)
Abb 😂always be blazin !! ⚡️😂I totally want to steal that 2:23:40
Nice!
Passive aggressive comments are strong with Kyle!😂
Kyle on VinWiki… when?
I’m surprised Kyle hasn’t acquired something semi sized that can hit triple digits to optimize the aero the whole way 😂 I know it’s crossed his mind
Hard to hide a Semi in the mountains going 80 mph from the cops.
2:30:09 too nice for the car lol 😂 but that music over the sunset though 🥰
Kyle’s greatest adventure. Need for speed. Lol
Kyle: "This is a PG Show".... also Kyle: "What the fuck is going on" lololololololol
That North Platte to Fort Morgan stretch is unfortunate! I’m looking forward to the NEVI funds flowing to upgrade the Brush Supercharger and make a new Sterling Supercharger.
Monster charging!
