This took me back to when I wore a younger man’s clothes while driving down the highway in my new 1988 Toyota 4x4 pickup. You are right. That 22RE engine was so reliable. If not for the body rusting out on me, I’d like to think I’d still have my truck. Thank you brother for giving me a chance to live vicariously through you for awhile and reminding me of a much simpler time.

Whenever I have to match up timing covers to blocks , I use a straight edge to the cover and a long wide file and make sure tithe mating surfaces are straight and true. Huge step to no leaks.

You can buy extra thick exhaust gaskets, I'd say about 1/4" thic.k It's pretty much a slab of graphite. It solves the manifold issues, doesn't matter how warped. It's expensive, around $40, I buy mine at Napa. The are 100% reusable for the life of the engine as long as you don't break them, they are super soft and not flexible.
I use silicone or "indian head" shellac on the paper timing cover gaskets to solve those leaks.
The cams are different, slightly different cam profiles between carb and efi. The carbs don't really care between the the 2, but the efi won't perform right if you have a carb profile on it, mainly just some slight dead spots in the high rpms.
If your swapping cams try and keep the rocker assemblies together because they are worn into each other. I've never seen a flat cam lobe on these engines but I've had to go back and adjust the valves after miss matched used cams and rocker arms were thrown in and wore into each other. These engines have a ton of room for valve lash adjustment. Ive seated valves .080 deeper into the head with no problems.
Super solid engines, just got done tearing apart my suriously abused 92 22re. Re gasket and new exhaust valves and it feels like a new engine with 170psi compression across the board.

Glad to hear I'm not the only one that can't get these totally free of seeping oil. Got a '94 Xtracab 4x4 MT pickup. Caught the broken timing chain guide right away. Pulled the engine to fix it and service other things (clutch/flywheel, rear main seal, block off EGR & air injection, re seal oil pan and intake manifold, etc.) yet even with me being pretty meticulous with my work, going at a slow pace and cleaning all gasket surfaces to help the Permatex grey bond, mine still has some oil seeping. Not enough to run down, much less drip to the ground, but still annoying. Even used a new timing cover. However, the one shortcut I took was removing/installing the timing cover without removing the head, since I didn't want to disturb a head gasket that isn't blown. I did load up the top corners of the cover with RTV though, but maybe that's still not enough.

That's what annoys me about my 22RE is it doesn't make any noise whatsoever and ran beautiful when it was running I just don't get why it would run one minute shut it off let it sit overnight and then not start the next morning and I have fuel coming out of the cold start injector and it has spark only thing I can think is maybe the mass airflow sensors going bad sending false signals to the computer telling it something's messed up I don't know time for four cylinder diesel or inline 4.0 Jeep motor if I had cash I would pay somebody to just build me a badass Toyota 22RE motor with a turbo on it or at least something would more than 80 horsepower to move my 35s LOL I do love that and you know it has been very good since I have known that truck for wow almost 20 years now

You can run gm 4pin ignition modules (40 bucks) when they burn out I’ve burn through 2 in mud trucks
Out of 6 I’ve own 4 needed head gaskets all over 200k besides my daily which failed at 130k
Got tired of doing them has have blue Devil for 40k and still kicking just fine
Both my 1gen 4Runner’s on there 3rd exhaust manifolds
My crawler run dc headers and gm module with cut open thermostat... honestly should be preventative maintenance sad to say
3uzfe and 3urfe are my baby’s now last way longer with less issues and 10times more power with 3 times better fuel economy
    But still daily a 94 22re
    2 87s 4Runner beach and mud
    And my 84 crawler
With 2 93 efi swaps laying around

Quick question if you can help I have the 86 Toyota 4Runner 22R-E fuel injected and it used to being automatic converted to a manual so it doesn't have certain relays where a normal automatic would under the hood but.
I drove it home from work a month ago or so now and it was running good when I parked it I went out to start it the next morning to leave and it would not start. Now with that being said it seemed to kind of be giving me a little bit of issues here and there as the weather was getting colder well I had been driving it. I have checked a whole bunch of stuff. I checked the cold start injector timer switch swapped it out with a good used one checked the fuel in injector on the manifold and cleaned it as well I have put new cap rotor plugs wires fuel filter fuel pump I am just not sure where to go anymore and I really need this running. It is driving me nuts because it ran good when I parked it there but now it's not i also check the relay under the passenger kick panel to make sure it was clicking to turn the fuel pump on when you turn the key over I even tried a different computer. I am at a loss here if I hold my foot to the floor it will sound like it wants to start but it won't which is odd being fuel injected thought lines may been frozen but they pump gas but I don't know the pressure there putting out but it should at least start with starting fluid right. I was wondering if you think this may be or could be a timing chain issue or what else it could possibly be I have been telling everybody if you can help me figure out what it is I will send you $100 cash money no joke send me ur address and I'll send the card. because right now it is just sitting in my driveway costing me insurance grief and everything in between and it's very hard to plow around its on the road and I need as it's very hard with one car and it does have like 210,000 miles on it.But whenever it was warmer out it seemed to run better would give me a hard time starting now and then but would always start. Now that the weather is getting colder and is cold here in upstate New York it will not run at all I even have a heater that I tried running underneath of it for hours and didn't seem to do nothing but it's odd because it has spark it has fuel and even if you spray starting fluid in it it will not take off sorry for the long introduction just wanted to give as much information as I could anyone can please help I have no problems throwing money at a part I know will fix it and if it fixes it I hold my word I'm sending you cash for helping diagnosing it. Also it seems like once it started getting colder the check engine light would start coming on as I was driving down the road and it would feel like it would lose power and if I just turn the key off and back on the check engine light would go out but not gain all its power back. Any help would be greatly greatly appreciated and I willing to check everything that anybody can give me ideas to check and I will give back whatever knowledge I can towards your suggestion or any questions you may have of what else I may have tried please some one help I love it I don't want to sell it. I would be willing to put a motor in it if I could find one but honestly I think I would want to put a 4.0 inline 6 in it
