    The look at 35:55, I felt that deep lol. Ive had my engine out 4 times with 3 different builds in the past year and a half (its been rough) and forgotten that plate more than once. Just picked up 22re V3 tonight and wanted to make notes on the order everything needs to go on, this video was a perfect visual reference. Hopefully this time around it doesnt burn more oil than gas!
    Edit: After finishing the video, a couple notes for the next build and everyone else reading this;
    -pack your oil pump with assembly lube, fill your oil filter before installation(can't really do this on a 22re unless its on a stand or relocated) and pull your efi fuse and crank the engine before first start to build oil pressure
    -Always torque crank and cam in sequence, tighten from the inside out, remove from the outside in.

    A true testament to toyota!!!! Running on all 3 cylinders!!!! My 22re is getting pretty tired in my 1994 lowrider pickup. She just rolled 486k on all original parts. When I start her up she's got a knock from hell for about 10 seconds then sounds like a diesel. Need to rebuild her thanks for the video!!!!

    The comment you made about the timing chain guide breaking and causing the timing chain to wear a hole in the water jacket was spot on. I haven't heard anyone else mention that in all the hours of 22RE videos I've been watching. I went and inspected my timing cover and BAM!!! big crack in a worn spot. The motor oil looked like a chocolate milkshake. I am so appreciative of that comment. It saved me countless hours of pain and heart ache. Thank you!!!

      Did you do the repairs? Looking to buy a pick up with milky oil and thinking it might be this. If so how did it go after the repairs? Engine ran fine? Im worries the engine may have had bearing damage due to the coolant in oil

      @@heyitschinoable I found this issue after removing the motor, thinking it was a head gasket. I rebuilt the entire motor, probably uneccesarily. Motor seems to run good, but now I have a transmission problem.

      Jim, I've only been a Toyota owner 9 years so far. I got a ways to go before I hit 35. It's good to hear from fellow fans. Kyle and I apparently bought engines for our 4Runners at around the same time from the same place, judging by his videos. I enjoy his videos too, it's cool to see how other people build and set up their rigs.

    My baby (90 4x4 pickup dlx 22re) just took a turn on me. Lost a timing chain guide about 300 miles from home but didn't notice until I got off the highway. Now I've got aluminum all up in my stuff. Don't know if you have time or interest in talking with me but I'd sure love your advice cause, well, you're the man!

    totally appreciate the vid. I just purchased a 1984 Celica GT-S with 460k kms on it lol so I have a feeling I will have to change the chain guide soon/ and or timing chain. Thanks for showing me what this motor looks like inside, and the steps to a rebuild.

    It's best to use ring expanders!
    Doing it by hand is likely to bend or twist the rings so they don't sit flush with the cylinder walls. Speaking from my experience just yesterday, I fudged one up despite being careful lol
    I just skipped thru this to see how if you installed the timing chain and cover first, wasn't sure how I'd hold the chain up but now it makes sense, thanks!

      Glad you enjoy the videos. For better or for worse, I make these videos just as a hobby. I don't make a living off of them so my drive to produce them isn't pressed by necessity. Also, my nice camera that I only bought fairly recently completely took a dump which really took the wind out of my sails. So I need to buy a replacement camera again and I've been putting it off. I can use my GoPro or my phone but neither one is really easy to use or makes as good of videos. Don't worry though, I'm still here.

    Random questions about small details! So what lube did you use (yellow paste) for the thrust washers and what oil do you use to lubricate the crank/head bolts before torqueing (little cap full of oil) Fantastic video that really shows the whole process. Best 22RE build video available. Also, what was that fancy RTV trigger squeezer you used on the oil pan gasket? That thing looks aweseome!

    Those timing chain guides took out two different engines in the same car. Well, they likely weren't dead but this was in the '90's before there was easy access to information on the Internet. The first, original 1983 engine went 268,000 before the chain wore through the timing cover and the second, replacement 1988 engine went 198,000 before throwing the chain off. The car was a now rarely seen 1983 Celica GT-S.

    A very well produced video showing important steps and techniques!...compliments also on your articulation!
    I wasn't thrilled to see WD being used in the bores as a lube (it's mostly solvent!)...I would have used engine oil. Otherwise it's all quite similar to the Volvo Redblock which I am quite familiar with. When the Flywheel went on, not being a Toyota expert, I thought you meant you had forgotten the Pilot Bearing...and you didn't mention that...it's good practice to change this inexpensive bearing whenever there is access.
    My son (under guidance of a Toyota experienced mentor) is getting ready to install a Rebuilt 22RE shortly, and I will be monitoring/consulting, but I'm sure he got a lot out of watching your excellent presentation also! Cheers from Connecticut!

      Glad to hear I was able to help someone get more familiar with what they are working on. Good for you for helping your son get into fixing stuff on his own. It's a good skill to have and helps in life way beyond just working on cars.
      As for the WD-40 in the bores, I was taught that motor oil can burn up at the first start and gum things up with carbon, also that it might not allow the rings to seat as quick which is essential in the first few minutes of an engine's life. The WD-40 is mostly a solvent but also a very light lubricant which is all you need/want. I think we all agree the pistons/rings need some lube, dry would be bad. In support of my idea, when you take apart an engine that has been running, the piston and rings aren't really oily at all above the oil control ring, and that's how they live their life. In the end, it's probably another debate like break-in process or oil choice. Everyone has their opinion which they swear by but it probably makes little to no difference.

    What works well with the sheered bolts is welding a nut to the broken stud. Not sure if you have a welder but it works great. Heating aluminum is a pain cause the expansion rate compared to the steel. Just for future reference.

    dont feel bad theres a bolt that runs down under the timing chain that apparently needs to be sealed or it will eventually get oil and water mixed up i had to open everything back up put a little permatex on and close her back up. Way to make it look easy tho😁

      Glad you liked the video. This engine is really basic, no hydraulic lifters or oil operated solenoids so the oil viscosity isn't really too important. It'll be happy with basically any engine oil 5W-30 all the way to 20W-50. I usually run 10W-40 or sometimes diesel 15W-40. It really doesn't matter much. Any oil will do as long as you change it.

    I have a few questions. Does the size of your tires hinder the power the truck puts out goin up grades in the 4 runner , 4 cylinder? Have you changed the gearing at all for that ?

      Tire size definitely makes a difference. The Pickup has stock size tires and stock 4.10 gears. The 4Runner has 33" tires and has 4.88 gears. Even with the re-gear, it's slower than the stock Pickup. For a while I had 35's on the 4Runner and it was even slower. Both trucks are 22RE powered.

    Could you list the types of gasket sealers used and for what parts. I also noticed sealer on some bolts.

    Nice! What sealant did you use on the top corners of the timing cover? Looked like a second application after razoring it off.

      Permatex Ultra Gray. Razor off the tab that sticks up once the timing cover is on. A tiny dab after keeps it from leaking through the junction.

      22RE Performance is who I would recommend, however, they are not currently taking orders. They're wait list was approaching 1 year long so they suspended taking orders so they could shorten the list. They are the best in the business though. I bought the engine for my 4Runner from them in 2019.

    I have a 1986 Toyota 4x4 that I purchased in 1986. It's been through me, my dad, my brother, back to my dad and now back to me. So i'm planning to keep it for a while! It runs, but has about 335,000 miles on the motor. Thinking about a rebuild or purchasing a long block, Not really looking to do a performance setup; when stock this truck did everything I needed it to do. I'm having trouble finding info on youtube (maybe I should try forums) so I thought I'd ask you guys. If I get ready to do something with the motor, should I look for a remanufactured long block, or just get the existing motor rebuilt (price will be a consideration, but not override quality)? I now have a Jeep JK so I'd like to get my Toyota back to a daily driver. Hell, the existing motor may go for a while longer, but I'm looking at alternatives. About to sell a boat so I will have a little cash on hand. Any comments/input would be much appreciated. PS, when in the USAF, I had it customized at Clark Air Base, Phillipines. It has a custom 3" body lift, custom nerf bars, and a custom winch bumper. Still has the original paint!!

      Don't buy any of the $1500 long blocks. They are made with cheap parts and will not last. You're best choices are 22RE Performance, LCE Performance, or Yota 1 Performance. Those are in order from best to least best in my opinion. Really, there are no other quality rebuilders. I bought my engine from 22RE Performance and it's worth the wait and cost. Especially since your engine is still running. If you don't buy a long block from any of these names, you can buy high quality components from 22RE Performance and have a local machine shop do the work on your block. I've done that once and that turned out well also (this video).

    Great Video! Do you never use threat-locker to assembly the engine?

      I do in certain situations. On the 22RE I use medium strength thread locker on the fasteners for the timing chain guides and tensioner. I also used it on the small screws that hold the rocker shafts to the rocker towers. But I don't think Toyota did this when the engines were fresh so it's probably not necessary. On motorcycle engines, I use thread locker a lot more often. On motorcycles, a lot of screws are threaded into aluminum which is softer, and the screws are often smaller and shorter. Couple this with the likelihood that motorcycle engines will vibrate more than car engines and it just seems like a good idea.
