I saw Alice Cooper sing this song on the Muppet Show back in the early 80's I think. Hard to hear this song without envisioning Muppets dancing around : )

First time I saw Alice was in 1975 or 1976. It was amazing. The show the guys from Lou Reeds band . It was just before his melt down. He is great guy and never curses or defames religion. Dick Wagner, Steve Hunter, Prakash John, and Davey Johnstone in the late 70's were amazing. Just saw him again and he is touring with Rob Zombie .... Nita Strauss is on
e of the best guitarists at this time.

Alice set a precedent, by starring in a late night special promoting the album, along with VINCENT PRICE, who appeared as "The Spirit of the Nightmare," (and lent his voice to the track "Devil's Food"). If you can find the DVD or Blu-Ray, it's worth watching it as a 70's time capsule.

I'd say there are a few other songs on this album that are even better Halloween songs. The two after this one, "Devil's Food" and "The Black Widow" are for sure (must be played back to back). But also the songs "Cold Ethyl" and "Steven".

Alice Cooper famously performed this on the Muppet Show. When they called him and invited him to be on, he thought it was a mistake - that he was being asked to do a children's show. He asked what other guests had performed on the show and when they told him Vincent Price had done the show, he said, "I'm in!"

Brilliant reaction!!! You guys totally got the concept,100% !! Regarding Jim Morrison Alice Cooper opened for the Doors in the late 60's. While performing a song "Nobody Likes Me" and shouting "You hate me' You hate me" he freaked the drug induced crowd out so much they went running for their lives, literally clearing the room!! There soon to be manager "Shep Gordon" was so impressed by the crowds response , to the point that they would actually bail on The Doors,he thought all we have to do is reverse that energy, lol. a few years later were filling stadiums!

Yes Thank You!!! The bands name was originally Alice Cooper though the audience assumed singer Vincent Furnier was Alice. Vince became Alice and this album was when it became a solo project vs a band. Definiley a major shift and far more theatrical. This whole album is a masterpiece and this track merely the introduction! I suggest at least a few more earlier tracks before delving into his brilliant later70's material.
Next 'Billion Dollar Babies" (73) with additional vocals by Donovan!
Though if from this album has got to be
    1) "The Black Widow" (with introduction by Vincent Price)
    2) "Only Women Bleed"
but audio tracks please. Both brilliant!

Good call on the Jim Morrison comparison. There's an earlier A.C. song, "Desperado", that was an homage to J.M. The whole album is pretty diverse. Rock, jazz, ballads, pop, with the spookier stuff near the end. And as somebody already mentioned there's a good rocker near the beginning called "Black Widow" that's narrated by a classic horror movie legend named Vincent Price. I think the whole album is a really cool ride

Alice Cooper does like his horns and orchestration. Even though this is not his original band that did Ballad of Dwight Fry, it's still pretty cool, and the production value is excellent. Eventually you must listen to more of his earlier work, with the original band. His radio hits are really the lamest of his songs.

As others have said, the album should be taken as a whole. You get a much better understanding of all the songs when you listen to all of them. The story of Steven can be seen to be extended in later albums, where you can find songs that fit with the WTMN album. Along Came A Spider is regarded as another Steven album, even if it isn't explicitly so. The Welcome 2 My Nightmare sequel seems to conclude (in my opinion) the story of Steven. I think Alice Cooper could put together a rock opera about Steven.
