The song came out in 1971, and the producer was Bob Ezrin, who went on to produce massive hit records in his career, Pink Floyd, Peter Gabriel, Kiss, etc... this Alice Cooper album was Ezrin's second time producing a record in his life, and when you consider the complexity of the orchestration, the excessive amounts of individual instruments and the limited access to recording technology for the time, he did pretty good.

The macabre humor was so cutting and designed to smack parents in the face which delighted their teenage fans - and I was one of them. But even at 16 I recognized great musicianship and even greater songwriting. This entire album is fantastic and this is one of 5 early albums that would make a riveting deep dive Biz. Love It To Death, Killer, School's Out, Billion Dollar Babies and Muscle Of Love - we'll be there with bells on!

His song Pain is a must listen. The lyrics are tip top (some of my all time favorites). Just a taste of the lyrics... "I was the loudest one laughing at the saddest wake...I was the filthiest word on the vandalized grave...I'm the compound fracture in the twisted car..." The album Flush the Fashion is a hidden gem of an album.

An "Agrophile" is someone who's really into growing their own, if you know what I mean. Alice is slyly saying that the neglected, now-dead "Little Betty's" absentee father is a stoner/pot dealer somewhere "in Texas," while her mother works nights as a stripper.

Alice Cooper is a wordsmith .Bob Dylan said that Alice Cooper is an overlooked songwriter .Crazy Little Child is a great song...he has sooo many!!!
Brutal Planet is a song and album that needs a listen. Rock on dude !!!

He wrote intelligent and thoughtful lyrics. Some of them sound unbelievable in the "rock" idiom where bands seldom show that kind of intelligence. Ever since hearing "Second Coming" on Love It To Death I was impressed.

Excellent analysis as usual, Biz. I was fortunate enough to have seen the Cooper band several times in '73 and '74 and each show was unforgettable. A couple of great show openers were "Under My Wheels" and "Hello Hooray". I'd love to hear those one day.

The musical arrangement of this song is excellent. I particularly like the interplay of guitar and bass lines and how the vocal melody ties them together. This is seriously good music. Not many bands were on this level.

People mistakenly think this song is about killing babies when it is actually about bad parenting and accidental drug overdoes because parents wont keep drugs out of reach.

  • @Alan-vs9bc

One of the band's best ever songs. A staple of their stage set - where Alice axed a baby doll to pieces - it's both deliberately shocking and profound at the same time. From their magnificent 1971 Killer album, it's Alice Cooper on Grand Guignol steroids. (Incidentally, next week a newly remastered, deluxe edition, of the album is being released.) For a future reaction I'd suggest Ballad Of Dwight Fry, from their previous Love It To Death album.

RE. the mix, this was 1971, and Cooper hadn't made it big yet, until after this album, done on a budget.

Hey Biz, love ya man! We need more Alice Cooper! His music and lyrics are so good and he's such a versatile artist. The catalog is big and there's a lot for you to get to, but here are some more songs for you to consider to review, Halo of Flies, Billion Dollar Babies, Welcome to my Nightmare, Muscle of Love and for a few excellent ballads he's done, Only Women Bleed, You and Me, and How you Gonna See me now.

Alice Cooper was raised in a very religious home. Moat people look at the subject matter and get the opinion that he is anti religious or evil. He never curses and has schools that teach the full range of the arts to teens in Arizona. Alice is not a preacher however you will notice that in songs like these involve serious subject matter. He is the evil one and always gets his comeuppance. The first show I saw him is was the first shows that Mrs. Cooper took on the role of his partner in and also the executioner of the demon. It has been over 50 years since I had the pleasure of witnessing his showbfor the first time. YaY...

When you put this in context of the ending (courtroom trial), I theorize that the early lyrics are switching perspectives. Starts out with mom trying to say this was an accident. Then you get the prosecutor saying the baby couldn't have gotten that aspirin off the shelf, so it must have been murder.
