And when you go up certain slip roads with a wet road surface it can pick up the reflection and go into the emergency mode. Always happened when coming off the A46 onto the A45 mid afternoon with the sun behind you. when it happens to you twice with a fully loaded double deck trailer on you have to change your pants. I always turned it off when approaching that junction after it did it too me twice.

I disagree, it doesn't dumb down the skill at all but in fact makes incompetent drivers that shouldn't even be on the road in the first place more lazy behind the wheel. These sort of assistive technologies are sort of catch 22 in that regard, and perhaps highlight a bigger problem with drivers today.

There's something wrong with the braking system on that Merc truck, 1st they tried blaming YOU , apparently you weren't in line with the stationary car and then on the 2nd attempt, if you look at the overhead drone shot, the dummy car is slightly offset ? Now if your a truck driver careering towards the rear of a car, your obviously going to deviate your steering to either the left or right to try and AVOID hitting that vehicle , it's human nature , so inherently there's a fault in the working design of this object avoidance system, so mercedes, fix it !

I've driven trucks with these features and they are great but there is an emphasis that these are not designed to stop collisions but designed as an Aid. No system is perfect yet but they will get better and better. These things are better to have than not to have in a truck. The ABA has saved me once and once was more than enough. These systems are more of a safety net that is better to have than not to have. There are many limitations but they will become the future and the standard.

I have a 70 plate Mercedes Sprinter with this on and has camera in front screen and i'm not keen, in slow moving traffic it can slam the brakes on it's embarrassing, If someone pulling out on you either from a side road or even worse on motorway it's bleeps its head off and can try braking, Id have thought it be worse for a truck travelling on motorway in slow lane and someone merges on to motorway the truck be slamming brakes on, The system on my van seems to work when it wants because sometimes it would let you hit the vehicle in front, me personally would prefer not to have it on my van

And when you are in a perfect condition for this system to work in real life. What about the truck driving behind you? It'll probably won't have enough time to react on you making a emergency break and will probably push you into the car in front of you anyways.
The only thing gained then is a collision with reduced speeds which will probably cause less damage than without these systems...

So, how big is that area again?
I have to say, I was really hoping for this one to come out. Not sure what to think of the result. 4 out of 5 is good, I just hope it will become even better. Would not call it perfect jet. To blame the driver if it does not work is not the way to go in my eyes.

the area is either 300-ish x 300-ish meters (25 acres) or 1600-ish x 1600-ish meters(625 acres or 25 x 25 acres) using measurement of area as measurement of length is odd ngl.
And it is perfectly justified to blame the driver if the system fails( you know that person is in charge of the vehicle after all). If it were the vehicles fault that I didn't do my job wtf am I doing in that job in the first place then? sitting there looking pretty? pretending I'm working? or say that I'm watching youtube or taking a nap and drive over a pedestrian with that thing active... Is it my fault or the systems? by your logic it would be the systems fault btw, cuz the system was active. If the thing was fully self driving aka no wheel or human in the vehicle( and not that Elon garbo of pretending lvl 2 driving assist somehow = lvl 5 wheelless self driving) then sure it would be the fault of the system, but as long as there's a driver the responsibility of operating the vehicle is on the driver as long as the truck responds to drivers inputs.

But to say that a system only works if he does everything the rigth way and not to call it a limitation of the system does not work for me. Even if it were to require you to drive in a specific way to work properly I’d still say it’s better than nothing as it still has a chance of working and being an aid that is kinda it’s purpose in life. If you approach a roundabout on cruise control on the brand new trucks, it detects teh roundabout and slows you down appropriately. Often going around the roundabout at 15mph or so, then accellearates on the other side back up to speed.
But likewise I have had the sensors detect a vehicle that was in the next lane over turning right, where the system has applied the emergency breaking unnecessarily. However, that was the older system on the 2017 trucks so probably there are updates now.

The problem with this is when the driver depends on it when they are tired. Like the auto pilot on a Tesla that people use to rest their legs an arms on long journeys. With all new rules for drivers, why are more vehicles being designed in a way that the driver has to be interacting with the dashboard console. It’s great having the new tech. But not good if it’s going to cause you to get a fine for trying to use it.

Through work using renaults scania and merc antos. Some especially the merc on cruise control the collision sensor and brake assist are dog shit. It tends to activate at invisible vehicles and almost cause an accident due to sudden slowing down in a live lane no traffic going 40/50 down to 20/30 for no reason at all

Daniel, with the 44t artic I saw that it was unladen, not really a full & proper test! However as a "driver's aid" it's ok.

Would Active Braking Assist not be more beneficial in 'Real World' environments if it wasn't designed to stop in a safe distance (eg lots of chance the radar misses as shown and potentially removing driver awareness) but instead designed with a wider radar but only activating braking when the system computer detects the maximum braking distance is 100% passed? I get that this would result in potential impacts albeit at a much slower (survivable) speed but also mean that the driver still retains all the control unless in extreme circumstances. Basically a system that only activates in a real emergency situation rather than another system trying to take over some of the driving.

That's already pretty much what it does. Narrowing the field of view of the assistant also means less false alarms, it was really a problem in the previous generations where it detected stationary signs etc. along the road and triggered the alarm. Also, reducing the efficiency of the assistant for "more control" makes no sense at all since the driver always retains complete control anyway, even during the emergency braking, by activating kickdown.

Wrong on the hazards.. it's been an EU law that hazards come on under emergency breaking for a while. Even when driver controlled
