@Dave Z Please indulge me for a moment because I'm going back to 1863. When Lincoln signed the Proclamation he didn't believe in slavery, but he didn't see Black people as his equal. Black people would not be able to vote, hold public office, serve on a jury nor any interracial marriage would be allowed. He was allowed however to be free to make a life for himself. Fast forward to 2020,:we can vote, serve on a jury, hold public and marry who you want. And pursued a better life for ourselves. All hard fought battles. But you know what, in many others eyes we're still seen as less than no matter what we've accomplished. So even though Black people have elevated themselves, it doesn't elevate them in the eyes of a racist.

Appraising a home isnt rocket science and there's a long history of racist people purposefully underappraising homes that are attached to black people. Just like how banks would put a "B" on loan applications to indicate to the loan officer that the person applying is black and therefore should be denied. Wells fargo got caught still doing this as recently as last decade. There are no 2 sides to institutional racism. Either this woman's home was purposefully underappraised or it wasn't. I’m African American, my wife is Asian.... we were refinancing our home. Appraiser walks in, looks at my wife and immediately cops an attitude; ends up trashing the value of my home with his appraisal. I went after his ass first, he found himself under investigation (by the state) and almost lost his license. Next I got the mortgage company that sent him. Our lawsuit became a class action lawsuit. The company went bankrupt, the owner of the mortgage company croaked during the lawsuit... and in addition to my home, I saved the home of hundreds of other minorities who had been victimized by racist mortgage companies and their associates. And yeah, I got paid.
(This was during the collapse of 2007).

Just because someone is lawyer doesn't mean you sue your way out of a system. Look up the laws and how they are created then you'll see who the law protects, then you'll understand how the legal industry will side with corporations. If she does it, a high probability that she will lose it all.

This piece is corporate propaganda using race to manipulate people into using a huge corporations computer program instead of tens of thousands of independent and experienced professionals that usually are small business owners. On top of that, the numbers just don't make sense. Historical appreciation since the time of their prior sale indicates 9% gain. Current appreciation indicates 18% gain. The 1st appraisal also indicated 18%. The 2nd appraisal indicated 58%! Not 1 AVM (including her own company) supports the 2nd appraisal. The state's tax appraiser is 10% from the 1st appraisal and 25% from the 2nd. And to top it all off, she refuses to release the reports and hasn't even filed a complaint against the 1st appraiser! This story is such bs it is crazy!

The difference in price had to do with the claim of and addition to her house. The first appraiser didn’t approve it. The second one did. Last time I checked the first appraiser was correct in his assessment. But hey, let’s just take them at their word instead of checking with other parties.

So sad when she said it hurt to know she was “devaluing” the home just by being in it. Well over a decade ago, my bf at the time and I were apartment hunting in ATL. Found a great place, he used his “white voice” on the phone, everything was fine, but then when we got there, all of the sudden they no longer had any openings and if memory serves me correct, they came out to the car to turn us away. We didn’t even make it in the office. I’ve always suspected it was racism.

Something similar had happened to me too. I called a place and the woman on the phone told me that there was a person moving out in 15 days and as soon as she moves out, I can move in. They asked me to send documents and immediately, I get a response by email stating that the woman who was supposed to leave had decided to extend her stay. My intuition told me that it didn't make sense and that she was lying. So I created an email address using a Caucasian name and I sent her an email pretending to be a Caucasian woman looking for a place for her daughter. Immediately, I get a response by email telling me the same thing that she had told me that there is a woman moving out in 15 days. I knew the reason why she rejected me is because she didn't like me. It's because she hates black people and because she is racist.

- Literally not 1 piece of data supports the 2nd appraisal and Abena refuses to release any actual data. It is just her telling a story with no facts provided

@@nyk3334 Newsflash: EVERYONE thinks they got a low appraisal. Trust me.. I am an appraiser. The stuff people complain about is INSANE. People have no concept as to how value works. For example, I just got a complaint from someone because I measured their house 15 square feet smaller than county records shows... FIFTEEN. People are clueless. Appraisers get held to very high standards. ALL of our reports go through multiple quality control processes. Also, keep in mind, an appraisal is not the absolute highest value your house could potentially sell for. It is the most likely value that a typical buyer would pay in an arm's length transaction that the appraiser has the most credible support for. We are the only people in real estate that get paid to be honest. Putting a target on us is RIDICULOUS...especially since we also get paid the least out of everyone in real estate!

Nothing changed in the home other than the removal of all thing “black” or “black associated” I don’t think the 2nd appraisal comes about as a result of her complaining about minute things on the report.
@@bossladyblues Clearly, you can see that her "experiment" was hardly scientific. She changes at least 3 variables (appraisers, the house (supposedly she took down pictures however we don't know that is true since she refuses to release the appraisals which would show the photos...) and time of appraisals)...so, her 'experiment' means nothing (especially since she already had an outcome in mind that she wanted). There is also an accepted 10% variance for appraisals because they are opinions of value.
You don't know which appraisal was correct. The bank choosing the one that gets the deal done means nothing. However, when you look at the numbers, it appears as though the 2nd appraisal is the one that is off. Do you understand appreciation? Let me illustrate something for you:
Jax historical appreciation is 3% per year
Current Jax appreciation is 6% per year
1st appraisal indicated 6% per year
2nd appraisal indicated 19% per year
Does that make sense to you?

EXACT SAME SCENARIO happened to me. Had to leave my wife home (biracial can pass as white) and remove all my families photos and keep hers up. Sure enough the appraisal came back ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND DOLLARS higher than the last one done a few weeks prior. I was just happy we gamed the system and it worked. But it’s disgusting nevertheless.
She did the right thing though. Nothing to be ashamed of at all. When the system is unfair, you do what you need to do to game the system. African-Americans have been doing that for centuries! It's a business move, not a test of loyalty to your blackness. Get the highest appraisal you can get because THAT is loyalty to your family!

This happened to my best friend too...I lived in Orange County, Ca...and he just had a fight with his fiance so he asked me to drive him around to find a hotel...My best friend is a dark skin black and that day he wore a "du rag" on his head, and dressed a little more "ethnic"...because he was in a hurry to vacate his house that his girlfriend just threw him out...lol...They lived in a half a million dollar house in Laguna Niguel, in the late 90's....so he had expensive taste and wanted me to take him to a nice hotel...Unaware of his appearance due to his distraught emotions....He kept leaving each hotel telling me that they were booked...after about the 5th hotel...I told him let me try...Now i'm a light skinned black who learned how to deal with institutionalized racism by ditching all the ethnic cliche's that would get me harrassed by the police and store owners... copying the styles of the local surfers I lived around in Costa Mesa, Ca...So I was like hey bro...Let me try! My friend got really upset at me for even mentioning his du rag and baggy pants...lol...I wasnt dressed that much better just "strategically for my environment"...board shorts, color tee shirt, flip flops...and said "bro" alot...lol. Well what did you know? 5 min's after my friend left the hotel letting me know they were booked...They managed to find a nice room for me and about 25% less than what was being told to my friend...I laughed, but deep down it wasnt even funny...I gave my friend the "key" and drove off...I thought to myself he needs to learn how to assimilate "ignorantly"...It was until a couple of years later that I learned I was shedding so much of what made me interesting and unique... Racial injustice is real: last year when I got divorced the judge had my ex talk 90% of the time and completely ignored my attorney and myself. When my attorney tried to talk the judge threatened her with being rude and disruptive, for speaking up ONCE. Both my attorney and I are Hispanic and Native American, my ex is Caucasian and so was her attorney.

I hate these kinds of stories. Why? Because I remember vividly being subject to this in Virginia, when I was moving for a job there! Me and another recruit, a sweet, kind White girl from Gainesville Florida, were told to take some time and find ourselves, some apartments. It made sense for us to ride together. But every time we hit a rental office, there was a wall of "don't have any apartments right now", even though the sidewalk sign would say things like "open for rental".
They would always politely take our number and say we will "call you"! I realized that they thought we were an interracial couple, but naively that never crossed my co-workers mind. So I gave her an excuse to go looking on her own, although in a new unfamiliar city, she wanted me with her. She looked in the area between our hotel and the job, since she was now kind of familiar with it. She got an apartment that 'suddenly opened up', when she did a follow up inquiry, at one of the places we'd visited before. It took me a little bit longer, my door was only opened after I said to a rental office that I was going to complain to my company about getting resistance. My company at the time was Sears!
Now here's what adds insult to injury! We both celebrated our apartment find and went to have breakfast together. We walk into a cafe and all of a sudden everyone went quiet. We got a table and sat, and sat, and sat, and sat! Finally, I said to the lady, "why are we NOT getting served"? It was only after my co-worker, showing frustration for the first time said something like, "we are management trainees and we have to get to our job"! Then everyone relaxed and the server began to give us the service we deserved! I'm getting hot writing this, because with Trump, I feel like I am back 40 years again! So I'm going to stop now!

My credit score was good and I was suppose close on the property as a first time home buyer during the Obama administration which meant that I qualified for the $8000.00 first time home buyer program. When my closing date arrived (prior to the program ending date) I was put on hold and it wasn’t until after the $8000 first time home program ended that D.R. Horton decided to close on the house. I got so upset that I backed out of the deal.

I had an experience in a store for buying soda's from a dollar store. I wanted to buy a case of soda. The sales person said I couldn't get it bc the sales person said it won't be any for others to buy. I shared what difference does it make, your still selling them for the same price. It was another employee listen to the conversation, he looked very confused the way the person was treating me on the sale of the soda's. But a white counterpart came behind me with 3 gallons to 4 gal of water and there was nothing said. There is much racism in America. It’s still happening after moving back home 32 years later I sold my mobile home and they built 2 wood houseson the land. I’m still living out of my car, hotel, charity of my aunt in a pandemic. I’m black , my neighbor is white she started at lease 2 months after me her mobile home is set up, they built 2 houses on the land I sold, I’m at a lost of at least 10,000. There is a misconception that just because "the market is going up" that means somehow all houses are increasing in value and at the same rate. That is not true. Plus your house going up in value is anecdotal and is not any evidence of racism. The 2 important questions that you all need to ask yourselves are 1) Why are you accepting whatever the media says when they clearly have not presented both sides of the story and 2) Why do you want this to be true so badly?
Appraisers don't hand out equity from a magic money tree. The more you borrow against your home, the less equity you have.

It has been five months and she has yet to file a complaint with the state board or file a lawsuit. The only thing she has done in five months was create a new webpage so you can book her to be a speaker at an event. Money stunt. Cool anecdote. She is worth 1.2m and her younger husband is worth 900k. She is a lawyer and a VP of a company that makes a product that they are trying to replace appraisers with. This piece is corporate propaganda using race to manipulate people into using a huge corporations computer program instead of tens of thousands of independent and experienced professionals that usually are small business owners. On top of that, the numbers just don't make sense. Historical appreciation since the time of their prior sale indicates 9% gain. Current appreciation indicates 18% gain. The 1st appraisal also indicated 18%. The 2nd appraisal indicated 58%! Not 1 AVM (including her own company) supports the 2nd appraisal. The state's tax appraiser is 10% from the 1st appraisal and 25% from the 2nd. And to top it all off, she refuses to release the reports and hasn't even filed a complaint against the 1st appraiser! This story is such bs it is crazy!

I’m a white man and my wife is Asian. She is 1st generation Asian who went to college here for 6 solid years. She pays taxes and is a law biding citizen. Her accent is sharp, yet she speaks 3 languages. She wrote a book and is clerical everyday. She would out work any person I know. Her degree is in higher education. I think she surprised because she is a professional with degrees and most likely live in a nice middle class area. Sadly, that wasn't the case and despite her accomplishments she wasn't seen as equal. The difference between the first and second appraisal was significant.
