an ex-president sitting around drunk people with guns. That alone says a lot.
without security
I live less than a mile away from our government building. I see politicians in public transportation, in restaurants, on the street. We had presidents that used their bike to go to work. As we are a semi-direct democracy (we vote 4 times a year - every three months - on the most important bills) and we have proportional representation (we elect parties and their ideas, not people) the politicians are not so important. Most of the people do only now some names and wouldn't even recognize them.
That is Bull Shit that everyone is Drunk. they are having a few beers. that's all. And NO, it is not allowed to shoot if they have a drink too much . This too is a law.
Jos Timanta Tarigan our president arrives to work on bike, :)
Between sober and drunk there are various stages of consumption of alcoholic drinks, to drink doesn't mean to get drunk.
Only in Switzerland can someone say, "oh don't worry, *they're shooting.* "

I'm 46. Swiss. You have to understand that here in Switzerland, we do not have homeless people on the streets. Everybody is given the opportunity to make a living. We have mandatory Health insurance for everybody. Even unemployed people are included. The government takes care of it in case you can't afford it. This all ensures we do not have gangs /that many criminals. So no need to use arms to rob banks a.s.o.
Georges Braun as long as there is profitability in people being poor, USA won’t change.
True, it is not just about the gun laws. The whole social support structures are more... Well, social. Poverty and social injustice is the even bigger root cause of the violence. The guns just make that violence worse.
In short, life is good unlike in shithole america.

It's definitely the most Swiss answer I've ever heard in my life.
Aah, typical Swiss answer.
There is a HUGE difference between "respecting" your firearm and "worshiping" it.
Yup. I grew up in a house with some serious hardware: Machine guns, hand grenades, pistols, normal submachine guns. But I also knew why they were there: Both my parents had been in the resistance during the nazi occupation and they did not want to be caught empty-handed again.
We never worshipped that kit. Like the Swiss, we knew it was there. Period.
Not for personal protection, though - we had two great danes. They were a hell of a lot more efficient than a pistol.

"You don't bring your guns to school?"
"NO!"
"Why not?"
"because we're not americans."

It's more precise than that, he said "we don't American"
Actually, he said "we do not are American." I'm assuming it's because they do not use the auxiliary verb "do" in French or German (or any language besides English and the Celtic languages, at that). As a result, Swiss children learning English have to be taught to insert "do" and "don't" before verbs, but perhaps this kid is a beginner and does not know the exceptions with do/don't.

I love how one can just bump into a former president at an event.
cubix626 it is, the current ones are around sometimes too. The thing is, we donˋt have "a" president, the job is done by a council of 7 people and made up of people from different parties, from left to right on the political spectrum. But I guess explaining that would not make sense in such a piece.
@@thekatanaist The president here in Switzerland is one of 7 equals in the federal council. They all are the head of a specific department, much like a CEO who answers to the owners of the company. In this case, the owner is us - the people. In referendums the 7 members of the federal council have their vote like everyone else, but nothing more. Granted, they make the policies that the people then decide on, giving them a measure of power - but nothing like in the U.S.A. (where the power, as we've been learning lately, is also more spread out than I thought...)
Um, back to the presidency. That's mainly an additional job that rotates yearly, every member of the council gets to be president if they manage to stay long enough. Every 4 years all members need to be re-elected, which is mostly a formality. But if an individual councilor screwed up in their 4 years, they may well be replaced. The important part is that the president represents Switzerland as a whole, not their own agenda. There is always a bit of wiggle room there, but not very much as far as I know.
So, Trump has happened here too a couple of years ago. The differences were that ours was highly educated and actually knew his stuff and that his views, which were more on the extreme right, were watered down significantly by the rest of the council. Then he got thrown out after his first 4 years. The big political scandal was that parts of his party broke off to form a new, more moderate splinter which still exists today - 12 years later. And nobody talks about that anymore because there is no need. :-)
"That's your problem", that really was funny
There is a "President". But it's just a protocolar title that rotates yearly among the members of the Federal Council.

He wasn't, technically speaking, the president but a Bundesrat. We don't have a president in Switzerland but our executive branch consists of 7 Bundesräte, each being a more like a minister for some resorts. The well-regulated militia came from the state providing their own military. At the time the federal government did not have their own military. The seating of the first Congress on 4 March 1789, legislation to create a military defense force stagnated as they focused on other concerns relevant to setting up the new government. President George Washington went to Congress to remind them of their duty to establish a military twice during this time. Finally, on the last day of the session, 29 September 1789, Congress created the War Department, historic forerunner of the Department of Defense. The War Department handled naval affairs until Congress created the Navy Department in 1798. So the Constitution was ratified June 21, 1788. The second amendment main purpose the states legals rights to protect itself. After the creation of the military the second amendment became pointless. Aside the fact that Switzerland has a far better social welfare system to protect and help the weak, disabled and poor as well as no history involving slavery which lead to great inequality and injustice, the intention of owning guns was always completly different in these two countries. In America guns were historically always used to protect YOURSELF against criminals, natives, wild animals etc. So everyone has the mindset that anyone around is a potential threat. In Switzerland we own historically guns to protect OURSELVES against foreign powers. You trust your neighbours because the idea was never to use a gun against him but to fight side by side together against foreign powers.
Very well written!

Exactly! National defense, not defense against the nation.
One aspect also is the fact that Willy nilly Switzerland has and is confronting many of the mistakes of our past.
Child labour, separation of children from "problematic parents" and so on.
Only by going such a process can we really improve.
In many other countries the "state narrative" hides problems that lurk beneath the cold ashes.

@@SilverSmrfr I would absolutely agree that we don't. I see two concepts for the future: a) We keep our militia system but only a small part of the army learns the war and anti terror trade while the others are unarmed and trained for disaster control. That way the army would be much cheaper (much less weapon systems with their fantastic prices needed) while becoming more useful to the general public. b) We abandon the militia system and set up a professional army of about 15,000-20,000 men and women and let a country with experience (USA/GB/DE) support us in giving them propper training, so that they learn actual practical knowledge about fighting, not just the fantasy invasion scenarios clueless Swiss Brigadiers come up with. The result in both cases would ideally be cheaper and more professional than the joke of an army we have now in both cases.

The main difference is the culture of following rules.
Huge difference. A lot of what the Swiss accept would not work with Americans.
In the USA the government and your neighbors are your enemy. People don't like to follow the rules of tyrants and monsters. Laws only apply to some in the USA, so following the laws is admitting that you are a second class citizens.

That old man with the moustache was Samuel Schmid, a former federal councilor. So yes, Michael Kosta was hanging with a former member of Switzerland's executive branch. Also: the Swiss don't wear "Lederhosen"! That's just something the Bavarians and Austrians wear.
Thank you, had to scroll down a bit for the Lederhosen. Funny side note: this was the first time I've seen good old Sämi in a video - and it was an American one :)

one simple comparsion: A school friend has married an US citizen. They have 3 daughters, lived in the US for some years. Finally they came to switzerland. Why?
Their daughters were in the same school for 2 years. In those 2 years they had 3 school-shooting drills and one false school schooting alert. Imagine your three daughters in that school, and a possible school-shooting distress call arrives. A whole army of first-responders in front of the school, SWAT teams cleaning the are, evacuation. They just had enough, it was too much.

I loved living in Switzerland. Expensive as all hell but it's so beautiful.
Yes. Expensive. But the salaries are high too. So...no need to complain.
I went there for a business trip. Very beautiful, but I had to write a note to our accountant that we hadn't eaten at fancy restaurants or anything. Those were in fact our actual regular lunch bills.

It's not just about gun laws, thats only one part of it. The other part is: ppl have a good life to lose if they f* up.
You can't have 40% of poor ppl with nothing to lose in a country and give them free arms access...thats just a deathwish.
In a society where you don't have a wish to harm another because that one will give you a helping hand if you are down, thats a society where you don't have to fear a thing from anybody.

It's not embarrassing to have things to learn. What's embarrassing is the fact that the higher-ups are too proud and arrogant to be willing to learn, refusing that they need to learn anything.

No! I really enjoyed my time there, but I found Swiss reserve stifling as hell. I like the American sense of humor, and - as Swiss and other Europeans pointed out to me - that we have the ability to move and completely reinvent ourselves, and at any age. There are problems with racism outside the cities. As with Canada, some things are great, but we Americans need to be clear eyed about what works, what doesn't.

@@brekezek Of course welfare state. Isn't that the very meaning of a country, to look after each other? We as a people decided, that everyone has the right to have a decent life. Healthcare is public, because people matter. Education is public and free, because braincells don't care about how much money you have. You get a pension, because you've contributed to our country, maybe as a full-time mother or a bank director. Everyone who works pays for our jobless-insurance, and everyone who looses his jobs has the right to use this insurance for 2 years. Because loosing a job should not be equal to loosing your healthcare plan or your housing. Still we manage to have a financial stability and a capitalistic system embedded in a social context.
You let your own people die, because public healthcare is socialism. You miss out for the next Einstein, because poverty means no education and free education is socialism. If you actually looked as Swiss gun laws you would see that they are actually more lax than many US states such as California and New York
For instance there are no restrictions on semi automatics. Also with about the same amount a paperwork required to get a gun permit in most states you can purchase a full auto rifle, a suppressor, and short barreled rifle or short barreled shotgun. All of which are heavily regulated and very expensive in the US, and outright banned in certain states.
@Sabrina Kall Well all states still require you to be resident of said state so thats not an issue. Switzerland simply is made out of nonviolent swiss people aunlike America which is mix of literary everything on the planet. When did you see white swiss gang doing drive-by?
Wrong. There are restrictions on semi autos. For example, high capacity semi autos (ie. more than 10 rounds) and semi autos shorter than 60cm when folded are banned. Also, all full autos are banned.
