The first two appraisers need to be named. Anyone that has had their property appraised by either of those two need to have their properties reappraised.
There are all kinds of things wrong with the system. I took note that she bought the house three years earlier for $100,000. So, the $115,000 and $125,000 estimates were giving an apparently "very reasonable" 5% to 8% bump per year. HOWEVER, it sounds like the price of that house was massively suppressed when she bought it for $100K, if it legitimately appraised for $259,000. This is why predatory real estate investors love 'impoverished' neighborhoods. They can scoop up rock bottom prices and then rent at rates covering twice as much. They are persistent and intentionally ensure any poor person is unable to purchase a home, so they can be bled for LIFE for massively inflated rents. So many ways this is wrong. ... But this lady should sell her house for $259K YESTERDAY, and pocket $160,000 in cash. And THEN buy a cheap property in cash, and be done with the banks.
Black people are still playing nice with these people. It's almost deserved if you're not going to name them.
At 3:50 and 3:58 the names were spoken by the narrator and shown on-screen.
Edit: You may have meant the individuals from those agencies.
Actually the 3rd appraiser needs to be named. They over valued the house in order for the home owner to commit fraud. Their name is conveniently blacked out in the complaint.
Key facts that are missing from this biased video:
1. She bought the house for 100k, 3 years ago.
2. The first 2 appraisals were from mortgage brokers. The 3rd was from a private appraiser.
3. Houses in the same street are valued at 110k - 145k range. In line with the value the first 2 appraisals have given the house.
I know you will ignore this, it doesn't fit the racism narrative but, unfortunately, not everything is as it seems, especially when so much information is conveniently left out. This is what a former president would call "fake news".
@@dudebro3250 Actually that fits the racism narrative even more. It means that white people consistently have their homes overvalued and no one is doing anything about the fraud. Additionally, since homes are the greatest source of wealth for majority of Americans, it means white America has an overinflated wealth.
this has been going on forever. glad she kept fighting.
You are so cute sir
You are right. I worked in banking in 1991. My sister wanted to get a second mortgage on her home. She came to my bank, and the appraiser came into her home, made some off the cuff remark about how her house looked great. Appraisal came in low and I talked to my boss. She didn't want to believe it. We sent out an appraiser again, just like this lady, we used a White friend, and guess what? Appraisal was significantly higher.
@@susiepace2125 wow, it just shows how white privilege works

This is worse than redlining. They tried to steal her equity. She made it past redlining. Looks like she made to a good neighborhood. This was attempted hiest
We all know data can be racist because data is entered by humans. So, yeah, they may claim a robot or algorithm spit out a value but I bet their data set is attached to race and gender. Stupid companies. What the white woman explained about historic data is precisely why we cannot rely on data as absolute truth. Data is not objective. Data is subjective and has the implications of historic racial bias.
She admitted to doing MANY things differently for the third appraisal and cherry picked race as the thing that made the difference. Is there racism in home appraisals? Maybe. Experiments like this don’t show that there is.
@anonymous she removed her black art, did not put her race and gender on the app, and asked a white man to be there during the appraisal, all things related to race.
@@noname2577 this was not an experiment, but there's data available to show how race is a factor in real estate.

They shouldn't ask you that on any type of application but this America where any and everything is accepted and excused.
YES! Let's start there.
It’s for government reporting. If there are accusations of the bank of discrimination, the government can go back and investigate how the bank lended based on race. @@shos698 I don't think it's so much white privilege as it is systemic racism. This white privilege narrative only furthers that same systemic racism because now we have bs critical race theory teaching that kids of minority races are incapable of achieving the same as white kids and need to be coddled while white kids are forced to apologize or be treated as an enemy for what not they, but their ancestors did. I do not have to justify my beliefs to you. I am white by no fault of my own and I am a woman, which means I am of the population of this planet who are ALWAYS diminished, abused, and kept from succeeding by any male means possible. Fact. Yea, I didn’t know how this could affect everyone but I think that I would conceal my race for the good of myself and my neighbors. This life is crazy. I feel like I always have to play a twisted game of chess to get ahead.

Good question! And I'm glad you asked instead of making uneducated assumptions. And before I answer your question I want to add that, I never came from money on either side of my families so I technically am not a good example like a person who has wealth to actually inherit and pass down and yet I still have a family property in my family that was passed down. 1 property left to my mom and her siblings left to them by my grandmother.

@@1EQUALS-INFINITY What does that have to do with the fair value of a person home. The value is the value regardless of who lives there or is buying there as it is in any neighborhood.
@@1EQUALS-INFINITY That is only after the property is appraised. Once the appraisal is made realtors run comps for the area sales of comparable homes and sets the price accordingly. The buyers financial institution then comes out to inspect the property and decides if the appraised value to price is okay to write a mortgage. On the other hand if a homeowner simply wants to borrow money on equity, accuracy in an appraisal is paramount and the only fact should be the fair appraisal value of the home. If a home is assessed by county at $500,000, but due to improvements and sales of comparable homes in an area actually value is $700,000, if an appraiser comes in and gives an unfair appraisal of $525,000, the loss of $175,000 for the owner. @The Logic Party okay, I'll agree that a well-designed study may be useful, but the standard scientific method is not easily applied to all real life issues (for example, it's hard to find or assign a naturally occurring true control group). I'm also a bit wary because some "studies" are flawed in design, process, or methodology, leading to results that can be flawed, skewed, or misinterpreted (intentionally or unintentionally). Study results can be used to tell a story that fits the narrative or an agenda a party is trying push. Studies can be helpful, but without information about methodology and process, it will just end up being a sound bite for the news, which is a way to easily manipulate public opinion.

I am Afro-American and my wife is German-Caucasian.
That is cool! America should implement that.

I also have free schooling and free healthcare. Life is easier.
Housing markets fluctuate substantially in the US, many booms and bubbles. Appraisals vary even from outside inspection. $180,000 was her guess. Estimates were equally above and below that by $70,000.

@@wizdumb_and_valor The problem is having to use a white person at all. That doesn't make it okay but you know... It's America so no surprise.
That's so heartbreaking when she said that she was what caused her home to be devalued. They are correct, it is about evaluating people not their property that makes this so blatantly shameful and disgusting.
"I'm the thing devaluing my house."
I’m 46 and I remember as little kid hearing my parents and grandparents talking about taking down family photos and not being in The house when it was being shown for sale. It’s always been like this
But it needs to stop. Now.
It's actually not that uncommon to "stage" your house when selling it. We do this when selling our house all the time. The idea is to have the widest demographic of people able to picture themselves in your house. That means taking down photos, using neutral colors, removing clutter and excess furniture, removing religious icons, removing decorations that are too personal, etc.
All those appraisers that have devalued her house should be named and the lenders as well...its so sad that we as black ppl can't or not suppose to have anything nice bcuz the see us as less than...smh these ppl need to be exposed for their bigotry
I’m a black man and I have to admit I’ve learned to always check the “white box” when prompted for my race for almost anything other than a job. I even did that for my covid vaccine just in case. Also when making any major financial move I research what offers are statistically given to whites in the same situation and insist on taking those routes when I’m often offered what blacks are statistically offered in the same situation. It sucks, it’s sad, it’s angering, and it makes me feel off but I feel like playing games like that are necessary for black ppl to get a fair shake.
Right -wingers will still deny that there anything wrong with this.
What seems to be wrong is the 4th appraisal.

Setting the race issue aside, it's disgusting that appraisers have such power, and can seemingly say whatever price they want. They are messing with people's lives.
THE REAL QUESTION HERE IS HOW MANY FAMILY'S HAVE LOST DUE TO RACIAL IN QUALITY APPRAISAL ON THERE PROPERTY

I am not surprised, discrimination in housing has never moved beyond the Jim Crow laws. It is disgusting and the Question of race should be taken of lending forms. Getting a loan should not be decided by your race but your income and credit score NOT the color of your skin. I am white and I am not a citizen of the U.S. just a resident. Yet because of the color of my skin people asume I am American. I have been a resident for over 30 years, I am a Dutch citizen and have a Dutch passport.
For some reason I have no desire for naturalization mostly because America is such a racist country.

When paying our property taxes, I noticed that the information is incorrect. They have devalued our home, by changing the information about our bathrooms. The county tax appraisal office changed it from 3 bathrooms to 2.5.

Gotta love the states, “greatest nation on earth!!”
Think of the economic ramifications on black communities. And tell me this isn't systemic racism.
I also think making a list of everything that improved the property is really important. I remodeled a $140,000 house with top of the line stuff since I thought I would be living there the rest of my life. My grandfather also built it. I made sure to have an entire list written of everything I did to it. I also made sure to e-mail that list to the appraiser before they came and made sure the house was CLEAN and minimal. I wasn't there and the appraiser didn't know what race I was. I think these things made all the difference. It appraised for $315,000 when the houses next door were around $150,000. She had to pull houses from the other side of the town to compare with. So I got everything I put into it and then some.
I did this on job apps too as an experiment for myself since I'm mixed I'd check black on a couple and white on a couple and take a wild guess which race got a call back quicker......
He'll im in an 80% white subdivision and I got a 60k discrepancy in appraisal value for my home.
They act like this is a new story, This has been happening forever. There are people who have white girlfriends or boyfriends and they have to have them put their names on the lease or go for the loan because they know they will be charged a higher percentage rate than anyone else or have their home valued at a lower rate than it should. This is the world and the country we live in; The sad thing about this really is when we bring this up we are told if we don't like it then leave instead of how can we work together to fix this. Which has landed us right squared in the middle of the polarized times we are in now.
I know this is a fact. My parents bought their home in 1968 - they are white. A few years after they bought the home, the neighbourhood became 95% black. They made the decision to stay in their home, paid it off like good citizens, but now if they sell the home, it is worth almost nothing - under $50,000. This is a 3 story 3 bedroom home over 100 years old sitting on nearly 1/4 acre of ground. In the suburbs of this same city, the same house would be worth twice or more than it is currently valued at. No, it isn't right, no matter what race the homeowner is. All homeowners deserve to have their properties valued fairly and equitably ~
Wow! I sure hope more POC challenge their home values and report to HUD!!!
This is a BLACK woman. Not a woman of color.

"I'm the thing that's devalueing my house" oh boy did I feel that
Unless she completely remodeled the house, the first 2 seem way more realistic. 125k is 7.7% anualized rate. 110k is 3.2%. Average appreciation rates in US for single family homes are a little under 4%..... her expectation of 185k (22.8% return per year) seems a little absurd unless she's done major repairs.. and the last one of 259 (37.3% per year)... idk.... this just all seems very strange
This is heartbreaking however I can certainly believe it.
